I have a Mark V 25 head but there's one reason for having the 35 that wasn't mentioned. I bought mine before the 35 came out. The reason: the bigger transformer. This may not be an issue for y'all country bluesy folk but when you're down picking Metallica and need that CHUNK it's a big deal. The 35, even in 25 watt mode has a more open and natural sounding "gunk" sound to it when you palm mute a down stroke. It's more like a big, prized Mark IIC++. It's also a lot more percussive when doing alternate picking too and that was my only criticism of the Mark V 25 - it was a little too soft on that. If you want to play the song "One" on a 25 and make it sound authentic, be prepared for a world of hand cramps due to the extra chug and palm muting. With the 35 you don't have to palm mute as much because the transient peaks from the amp almost make an effective noise gate.
I think the best way to describe these little EL84 monsters to most folks can be split into two descriptions: Channel 1 folks: early Fenders. Clean, chimey and spangley! Channel 2: For me this walks the line either side of an angry Mark IIC++ - IIC mode is a little gentler and Mark IV mode nails the IIC++ but ironically doesn't get the ultra wide gainy tone of the Mark IV but that's not a bad thing. It gets the IIC++ really well and does a damned good impression of John Sykes and his Mark III combo on Whitesnake's fire breathing Still of the Night if you want it to go there. The 35 almost gets the Mark IV tone to a T. A bit bigger and beefier than the Mark V 25.
The really great thing about both of these amps is how they color speaker cabinets. I've been playing guitar since the early 80's and I've never heard an amp that sounds so different when you plug it though different cabinets. These amps are so reactive.
The downside to them before so reactive, as I've found out the hard way, they a great amplifiers. They amplify what is played but they don't coddle you like a compressed Marshall would. Nearly every man and his dog could jump on a 50 watt Super Lead and sound pretty good. I had a Model 1987 Super Lead 50 watt head from 1972 for a couple of decades and loved it but stopped using it when I got the little Mesa,. The Mesa doesn't suffer fools gladly but that's not a bad thing, For me, it stopped me from being lazy. It made me play better to sound better and when I got there it gave me that happy feeling of F**k this sounds good, really good. Most amps when you play a chord on a well intonated guitar, you hear a chord. On the Mesa you heard every note that makes up the chord. I find it amazing that after playing guitar for so many years that something this small can make me so happy. It's a lunchbox of awesome.
Truth be told, if I could find a 35 watt head locally new, I'd buy one in a heart beat. I'd keep the 25 watt and run both in parallel and blend the tone until I could afford to sell the 25 and get another 35!

You may recognize Randy from Mesa and Ted from Death Angel but the tall gangly dude is James Hetfield's old guitar tech that stood in for him on the Master of Puppets tour when James broke his arm skateboarding.

But the main question, is a mark v:35 down to 25w similar tone to a mark v:25 (beside the other features)?

      They failed to mention this.

@@AlanElias350 But it is in the video. When they talk about the solo boost mode at around 5:20, it shows the amp being in 35 watt mode.
The biggest difference between the two setups shown will be the combo is open back and the head is though a closed back mini cab.
The two amps are similar in tone. The 35 watt amp has a bigger transformer which gives the 35 a more percussive sound if you're into metal. You get a bit more initial attack on the note when you're hitting the strings hard and this is apparently in all wattage settings. Having the 4 EL84's in operation adds a little something to the lead tone if you're somewhere that you can crank the master past 12 o'clock. It may 'only' be 35 watts but as the owners of the Mark V 25 already knew, it gets really loud really quick, especially through a 4x12. It's not a huge difference in tone (having the 2 extra EL84's) and in 25 watt mode on the Mark V 35, the amp only uses two EL84's just like the smaller Mark V 25.
One thing about the Solo boost, especially on Channel 2: if you have your Master around 12 o'clock for your standard tone and then have the Solo around 2 o'clock, you're pushing the power section into the start of saturation. Past 1 o'clock, the amp doesn't really get louder, the tone just gets thicker and this is great for lead tones. With the Mark V 35 you can select 25 or 35 watts depending on the size of the room to get your volume placement around those settings. 10 watt for me gets a little too Brit Pop flubby so I never use it - but if you love the old Orange and Marshall SuperLead tones that have that "woof" to the driven sound then you'll like it.
If I were to buy a little Mark V again, I'd opt for the 35 - but as it was, the 35 wasn't around when I bought my 25. Both are fantastic amps and comparable to anything that's out there at any price point. I was always a Marshall guy for classic/early Metal and Peavy 5150 for newer stuff - but when I played the 25 watt the first time I saw one, my visit to the guitar store for a pack of strings turned into a new amp and a pack of strings. The old 50 watt Marshall Super Lead and Peavy 5150 are now gone. Channel 1 crunch mode did all that I asked of my Super Lead and IMHO, Channel 2 just kills the 5150. If practicing loud or playing with a band, I'll use Channel 1 crunch mode for my lead tone as it's not as percussive as Channel 2.
The ONLY thing I don't like about the amp with regards tone is one that's a little confusing to those that haven't played much through the Mesa Mark series amps: they are unforgiving. You can take a 5150 and crank the gain and play half assed and it will coddle you and make you sound that you're playing fairly well. The Mesa truly amplifies what you play. Play half assed, sound half assed. It's a blessing and a curse. You do become more aware of what you're playing and the nuances that go into it. In a similar way, let a big chord ring on a 5150 and you hear a big chord, with the Mesa you hear all the notes that make that chord even when the gain is cranked. It's weird and something you need to experience to get a feel for. There were some days, just after I bought the amp, where I'd come home from work tired and noodle around and I'd get 'buyers remorse' and then I realized that it was truly amplifying what I was playing with a precision that my Marshalls and 5150 did not.

The amps have a headphone out and a no load switch, so you can run the amp without a speaker.
