You are becoming the best gear channel on RUclips. It's not just tone and detailed demos with no talking, it's also about your insane playing! Keep it up!
On behalf of anyone too broke to own both of these, I appreciate this video. This was awesome and thorough. That said, as a metal player with geek prog influences, it's almost a toss up but that Recto has more of a bite on the highs in its high gain rhyrhm but the V has a bit more of an even frequency spread. So I wouldn't dare say one is better than the other - just that I prefer the recto.
I have to agree with this. I just traded a mini recto for a mark v 35. The mini recto is a great amp and can actually do a lot but man the Mark V 35 is unreal. In a band setting the difference really stands out.
And that "Fat" voicing is just $$, I bought the amp for the features and MIIC+ voicing, but I think I've spent more time with Fat and Crunch than anything else.
That crunch mode, holy hell that’s my only complaint. It should’ve been it’s own channel. Actually I couldve done without the extreme mode and just have the crunch, 2c, and mark v on channel two as a compromise
I’m really new to gear, guys, so please go easy on me. But I’m confused by what I’m seeing, or more accurately, what I’m not seeing. What cabinet is he running his heads through? I see his workflow information, but there’s no mention of a cabinet speaker. I am aware of ampless guitar rigs, where the guitar is plugged into preamp pedals, and run into a PA, or the guitar is connected directly to a computer and managed in a DAW, and heard through monitor speakers. What I’m not sure of is how, 2:03 if there is no speaker cabinet, is he connected a head to a computer? Things have changed so much since I last played seriously. It used to be you’d pick between a combo amp, or a head and cabinet, and use either pedals to shape sound, or put together a rack. Thanks!
These are hands down the best sound demos on youtube. I love that you actually try out different guitars and many scenarios where these pieces of gear would be used. I hate the "here's a demo of the amp using a Les Paul" and nothing else. You know, I want to know how it performs with a tele as well, a strat, a modern ibanez, or a modern high output active pickup. Also very well recorded, and in the context of a mix and not just pentatonic blues licks using poor mic'ing techniques.
Wow, thanks for doing this video...it's the best I've seen by far comparing these two amps. It's a great help to me, because as someone who grew up on the Marshall sound, I've been trying to determine if Mesa can give me tones that are not identical, but lean in that direction. I like the versatility of Mesa, and was blown away at how good the cleans were. On the other hand, I stay in the more classic rock end (Aerosmith, KISS, Stones, The Who, etc), so I'm not sure how much I'd use the gain channels. There seemed to be some gain tones on both that I might like, just quite a bit more low end that I'm accustomed to. Anyway, like I said, this was a very helpful video, and I really appreciate all the thought and work you put into it!
Mark: tighter, more focused, somewhat nasal thing happening in the upper mids. More sterile cleans. Recto: looser, more open, more harmonic complexity. Juicier cleans. I think the recto takes this one.
exactly opposite over here. the crunch from the mark is nice and tight plus highly tweakable. i found the recto to sound a little fizzy. the recto is almost a grand cheaper though
To my ears, Mark V is much more open and crunchy/clear but can sound flat, while rectifier sounds a bit traditional tube distortion when distortion kicks in it's congested and punchy. I don't really like the lows and the high sizzle on it. The lead is more forward and less flat. I take rectifier for the lead tone and mark v for everything else.
Excellent Video 👍👍👍. Brilliant Playing, some killer Riffs in there! I have the Mini Rec, the little Beast is so Tweakable, there's so many Tones, even between 10 watt and 25 watt. They Both sound Amazing, I will not be replacing the Mini Rec, takes Pedals really well, I'm very happy, it's a Mesa! Take care 🎸♥️👍. Melbourne, Australia.
Been really getting into your amp reviews and comparisons! I like the no-nonsense approach and direct tone-to-tone comparisons. The reamping of riffs is also helpful so we get a fair comparison of the same guitars/songs/playing dynamics across different amps. Genius!
I have a 25 and just played a 35, the bigger transformer and more power really makes a huge difference through the same cab. Every option is more usable.
Cleans are better on the mark V more pleasing overtones, preferred the mini Rec for heavy stuff as it has a more scooped sound and little more bottom end. The mark V has a better defined midrange.
I'm going to be really honest, every time I open your videos I for some odd reason keep thinking I'm just gonna hear some blues licks over and over again like most demos, but dude your tone is absolutely massive and your licks are so fresh that they feel like actual songs that I'd want to listen to. I'd love to hear more of your opinions spoken though!
Fantastic demo. If you only have one amp and you're eclectic in tastes, the Mark V is the perfect amp because it can sound like pretty much anything. For most, it's not worth almost twice as much as the Mini though, because The Mini Rectifier with an EQ pedal is equally versatile, sounds just as good, arguably looks cooler and is more customizable with different colored face plates, colored LEDs, etc. People go on and on about how great the gain is on these amps (for good reason) but my biggest shock was how great the cleans are. Maybe not quite enough to make me sell my Vox/Celestion Blue with NOS tubes, but surprisingly close
I'm surprised you set the pre amp bass control that high on the mark V lead channel. On my 90 watt head running the bass past 9 o clock results in a flubby response, yet things sounded tight here. Nice playing and comparison.
Both sound so good. The Mark is super tight and clear, and the Rectifier sounds massive. I have owned the Mini Rec, a Mark V 25 and 90W and honestly I'd probably get the Mini Rec again unless I could afford a JP2C.
I spent 3 hours in the Mesa boogie Hollywood store.. ready to buy the mini rec combo, they made sure I a/b’d the m5 35 and it was so much more versatile and the fat green channel didn’t exist on the red combo
Congrats, great video comparison and playing, now I get some nice ideas and settings to try in my mini rec, surprised to listen to the beautiful lead tones in the mark
I’ve owned the mark v:25 and the mark IV. Cranked up with the drummer the IV killed in cleans and high gain but that mid gain channel was awful. I think the 35 could be the winner. The recto sounds good, it’s not what I want to play with, but it’s a comfortable familiar tone. Probably more rectos on the albums I grew up with than anything else.
Great video. Wish I could get my Mark V 90W to sound this good. It is documented if this is the case the issue is with the player but just can totally bond with it. Thanks for the inspiration will keep trying.
One piece of advice: start with the regular tonestack controls at noon and very carefully work from there. Copying settings from other (famous) players did not work for me at all. The Mark V has a pretty good balance with the eq set to noon. For metal perhaps lower the bass a bit and raise the treble for more tightness but don't overdo it.
The IR / cab you use is going to affect the tone the most. I have a Mark V 90W as well and it sounds amazing when put through the right IRs. I suggest Celestion V30 based cab IRs.
@Nilly Sigger Yes, more master volume will saturate the power amp stage and get you some squishy compression added to the tone. This combined with slightly less gain will get you a more response attack which feels similar to classic 80's metal tones. I rarely have the gain pushed higher than 2 o'clock in IIC+ mode.
I have the MkV25 when I bought it it was a toss up between that and the mini rect. I personally felt the MkV had way more sounds and when you add in the EQ its crazy what you can get out of it. That said I liked the rect very much but it felt more limited. As someone else said you can make a MK series sound like a rect but no the other way around. Both killer
Why am I watching a comparison of 2 amps I cant afford even used? I don't know, but I really enjoyed the riffs and I think they both sound really great and I'd just get which one is cheaper if I could. :)
I have both the Mini rectifier and the Mark V:25, and a Fryette Power Station to make them even more versatile powerwise. I can honestly say that I am in tonal heaven. Couldn't choose between them.
Love to hear ya do a video like this with an AFD100 to how the tones compare to this, the JCM800 mini and the mini jubilee 2525 you did. Would be great. 👍
Mark Series Amps are always the best for heavy music because you can control the EQ better. Though I wish it was 100hz EQ instead of 80HZ or even 50/32HZ would have been good but the 6.6KH is a great chunky sound, crisp!!! :)
Did either one of these have any noise when switching functions? Had a markv25 that made a loud pop whenever switching any of the functions. It was even worse when the wattage was set differently on the 2 channels.
I have 2 mini Recs running through a large pedal board then into 2 Mesa cabs in stereo. When using stereo chorus, delay and reverb , Big Sky in my case, it sounds huge,3d and fills the room. Nice head but I think the price scares a lot off.
Great demo without talking ... now it's time for me to upgrade my JCM600 to Mark V. With this demo both amps are awesome but Mark V has better choices of sounds by using the EQ
The mark is just one of the most versatile amps of all time, sounds really good at a lot of different things but I don’t thinks it’s as focused as the recto is at specifically high gain rhythm.
Thank you for all the hard work that you put into your demos. I'd love to see a comparison between the 6505 and one of the other high gain Peavey amps like the Ultra Plus 120 or the XXX.
I love these comparisons! For me though, the TC-50 would still be my first choice instead of those 2. I did found the Mark series way too dark sounding, kinda veil (even with the treble maxed out see 1:56) and the Recto unfortunately becomes very flubby when pushing the gain. On the High-Gain Rock Rhythms and Solo Leads, the Mini Rec sounded just a little less toppy, and a little smoother; at least on the settings you had. Could be a good or a bad thing, depending on what you like.
Hi Jon! This is a very informative video. The playing is top notch as well! Can you drop a few lines about the songs you're playing here? I do think the solo is an Andy Timmons song, right? Many thanks!

Killer playing man. You have such a great sense of rhythm.
This is absolutely the best way to detail the nuances of both amps
Also I have to say as owning both the Mark can sound like a rectifier but a rectifier can not sound like a mark.
Yeah, the MK35 has a distinctive "chewy" character to the crunch channel that most other amps can't reproduce.
I have to agree with this. I just traded a mini recto for a mark v 35. The mini recto is a great amp and can actually do a lot but man the Mark V 35 is unreal. In a band setting the difference really stands out.

Honestly I'd love to have them both and run them in stereo
You had me a Mesa Boogie!!!! I love both of these amps. Yes, there are differences between them, and that's what one would expect though...
I fell in love with the Mark V, amazing. The mini recto sounds great, but there's something in that Mark V... Top notch video, as usual.
That clean Tele riff gives me life every time it comes up in your videos. So pretty and reassuring 😌

Mark: tighter, more focused, somewhat nasal thing happening in the upper mids. More sterile cleans. Recto: looser, more open, more harmonic complexity. Juicier cleans. I think the recto takes this one.

Mark V 35 all day. Less compressed and ore versatile, but still gets heavy.
