    What a great video, and your playing is outstanding! My new v:25 arrived yesterday at 9:34 am and I'm very excited to have it. I'm a metal guy historically but have been gravitating toward the type of tones you demonstrated here, looking forward to exploring the possibilities. Outstanding job.

    Really happy I came across this vid. A friend gave me this amp and, admittedly, this is not an amp that was on my radar- i play tweeds and deluxes, jazz/rnb. But man alive its very nice seeing someone who shares similar tastes in tone using this amp as I would

    Mesas are a Swiss army knife of amps. Randall Smith invented channel switching, variable power, multimode amps, adding a master volume to get gain at lower volumes, cascading gain stages - basically every feature modern amps have that we take for granted.
    That’s a great little amp. Beautiful cleans, and it will produce searing gain as well.

    Could be because its on Strat single coils like you said...but yes, it really does sound Dumbley. I have a Dumble replica and one of these. They both have cascading gain, hot rodded Fender DNA, prob why they can be dialed for similar tones.

    My sentiments exactly. I don’t play metal at all and I love this amp. I’ve used a Princeton Reverb live for 12 years and wanted a small 2 channel amp for a good Prince type lead tone, effects loop and the DI. Fantastic demo, sir!

    Some of your earlier videos using the Mark 5:25 helped persuade me to buy one a few months ago. I bought it mainly for the Mesa clean tones I had heard demoed, and it hasn't disappointed at all. I think it has one of the best clean tones around. (Lots of other great ones available too, though; as you say, it is very versatile.)

    Excellent review. I like how you showcase the fact that this isn't just a fire breathing metal machine. Extremely versatile. Well done sir.
    I think that the general knowledge point about using too much bass with Mesa amps is something that comes from the Recto series. They have so much more bass than other amps that when you're playing with any considerable amount of gain, it has to be turned down as the gain increases.
    This is also evident as to the general consensus that a boost (TS808, BD-2, Tumnus, etc) pedal usually helps it usually helps focus the bass and lower-mids on a Rectifier.

    • @mikedenkinger9570
      @mikedenkinger9570 Год назад

      So I just bought one (ironically three days before the Mark VII came out!)
      It's definitely a different animal than my Rectoverb 25. Less forgiving of sloppy technique, that's for sure!
      I'm running it through two Mini Recto 1×12's. I'm not sure that the V30 is the right speaker for this amp after two weeks of playing....
      I guess I'll just have to buy two more matching cabs and start swapping speakers in and out. Poor me....

    I have this amp and it's really great, super lightweight and has a ton of great sounds in it, can get pretty loud too. However, imo the Crunch channel is by far the best gain channel and they put it on the same channel as the Cleans. Technically you can change the EQ with the footswitch, but there is a huge volume jump so it's unusable to switch from Clean > Crunch without fiddling with the knobs.

    • @IronDave1985
      @IronDave1985 4 года назад +2

      This is true. Unfortunately there was really no way around that without Mesa adding a third channel. With that said, you can actually get some pretty nice cleans on channel 2, especially on the Xtreme mode. I’ve used Xtreme for cleans and Crunch for gain with a lot of success.

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  3 года назад +1

      @@IronDave1985 the Xtreme mode is also pretty great for that kind of Dumble stuff? I think it's a bit of a strange name for that mode haha and that was why it took me a while to discover it!

    Ya I use the extreme channel for the exact same reason… and same way… even lower gain. I’ve never owned an amp that could go to this degree of gain-from literally sparkling clean to rabid without being unusable in this way… noisy and not properly staged. Amazing channel that made this amp company legendary.
    I avoid using the eq with this setting on extreme mode. I dial it with treble at around 9 1/2 mid 11, Bass 10-11. I’m trying to decide where to set the presence. The only downside is this channel at these settings doesn’t take overdrive well at all. It’s really exclusive to a jazz tone and actually really surprisingly good. But just add a little brightness and viola… killer blues tone with overdrive at lower settings.

  • @Bellabaddi
    @Bellabaddi 11 месяцев назад

    So you have a dumble clone (in the back). I don’t play out, volume is also an issue but I’m after something that does dumble/blackface fender tones at lower volumes. I have an Allen sweet spot (15 watts) but it isn’t there, even with pedals. I was looking at this or even a ceriatone Joymusic. You recommend this over a dumble clone or something else? Sick tone btw.

  • @MrMattsac232

    Great video. I’ve the mark v 35 and it’s a great amp as you’ve demonstrated here. However it’s different to dial in than some other Amps in my opinion. I think it takes a bit of time to find the right sound and can be intimidating to some who are used to setting everything at noon and having an immediately useable sound.

    I bought one. A fine little amp for sure but it didn't give me the "wow factor" my MKIV combo that I bought direct from Boogie in 93' gave me - especially the cleans, which to be fair, it simply shouldn't be able to do. I played through the Fillmore 25 with a 335 and it was absolute Heaven! Amazing cleans to a good classic rock tone (I got a nice acdc tone out of that setup).. I've been debating between the two amps myself. One day I would love to have the Fillmore 25 combo, and the full Mark V. But I'm leaning towards just the mark v 25 simply because it seems to do just about everything really well. The bass control really only needs to be low when using tons of gain, as it will flub out since the tone controls are before the gain stages. Cutting the bass will tighten the response up.
    With lower gain, however, the bass can be quite a bit higher.

    The trouble with the "not just for metal" idea is the Clean/Dirt channel.
    Solutions? I don't know - but these are definitely the problems:
    - Clearly, nobody buys a mark to be a clean pedal platform. It's overkill, especially for jazz and country players. One prefers the high headroom of a SS amp, and the other just want a simple-r Fender 98/100 times. "Amp in a box' pedals have come a long way, such that hard/alt rockers rely on pedals more than ever now. That leaves the R&B/funk player and metalhead as the primary market for this amp, although mr. funkster may not have a need for a gain-y lead channel unless they're delving into Funkadelic or early Prince territory.
    - "Metal cleans" (sigh...) especially since the mid-80s have tended towards this dull imitation of an acoustic guitar by an electric, often using the bridge pickup (e.g. "One" by Metallica). imho it is one of the worst sounds an amp can make, because it always falls short compared to an acoustic. I understand the practical compromise playing live of course, it's that sonically it is a dead-end = guitar volume up max yet "amp stays clean".... the sound can't go anywhere so _why desire this? Just to sound lame and gross??_ I know I'm being a tad facetious, but honestly try to think of great cleans in metal and you'll see my point (and no, Dream Theater are not the 'future of metal' anymore, and never really were).
    - CH 1 "Crunch" is much too distorted from 8-9 o'clock and beyond, and not tasty enough wherever it is set. The "edge of breakup" region is in the first 10% and everything beyond is into medium-gain distortion... that is far too much, too early for anything called a "CLEAN" channel !!
    - Fat AND Clean are ultimately no different besides a bass boost, with little character in either one to be found.
    Make those positions interesting sonically please, instead of aiming for a "Pristine Clean' which has almost no value in electric guitar beyond archtops (which this is the wrong amp for, anyhow).
    Something like a BFTwin vs Tweed-Bassman vs HiWatt response that results in different touch response and CLIPPING character as the gain is increased - this would be much MUCH more useful than one switch going from a (pointless) bass-boosty 'FAT' to CRUNCH - a crunch that builds up the same old generic sound far too quickly.
