Tasteful, not rushed. Too many players feel like they must be super fast to be great. Nick Johnston has something to say musically. The melody is first , then the phrasing accompanied by flashes of pinpoint accuracy for emphasis. He makes you listen for what is next. A lot to say musically. Outstanding Mr. Johnston. Got this brother playing again!
Came here for a Mark V demo and left being blown away by Nick’s awesome playing 🤯🔥 I’m a hardcore metal guy but damn Nick’s playing and talent is just mind blowing … so talented and he pours his soul into his music … incredible and so inspiring to listen to him playing. A breath of fresh air
THANK YOU, MESA, for posting this video, literally my _very_ first exposure to Nick Johnston-maybe two months ago, and now I'm searching for more. I've since bought the two physical CDs still available... PHEW! SOOO highly recommended! Those CDs are in constant action lately. Nice to find so many NJ-related videos on YT as well. My main question, being so late to the party, is: Where the heck has this guy been, and why have I not heard of him before? I've since discovered that his career goes back several years. Jeez... I subscribe to GP, GW, Guitarist (UK), Premier Gtr... and I don't recall ever seeing even his name, let alone an article. Is it because he's Canadian? (Seriously... Max Webster or Kim Mitchell anyone? Look 'em up!) Definitely, Nick Johnston is one _musician_ deserving of a LOT more recognition! And, by the way, what a great amp that is. I'm already looking into how to manage one sometime soon. Great demo! *EDIT* (to answer myself!): Weird coincidence. I just got the newest issue of Guitar World (Hendrix cover), and guess what I discovered? A 2-page article on Nick Johnston!
It’s weird, I usually don’t care for instrumental music but I love that album. I also don’t care for Strats but that NJ Signature is so nice. Again, fantastic Album Nick.
Pure magic. Honestly, I came here to see how he used the 5-way switch and volume to perform the song. So synced with his instrument it's unbelievable. You Sir are so inspiring.
The Mark sounds great with the singles. My goodness Boogie guys.....that room you created is like the ground zero of tone. The dream team of amp heads.
Mesa amps really bring out the features of the guitar itself. Nick Johnston and Andy Timmons use the guitars volume knob and pickup selector to great effect to say the least. The Mesa amplifiers that they have given demos of not only bring out the guitars usable features, but highlight the amps touch sensitivities and responsiveness that make every note sing and be heard. I have not had the pleasure of owning a Mesa as of yet, but I'm working on it. These amps are made to inspire and create great music. Mesa does it like no other. Keep it going Mesa!
Many thanks fore the kind words, Mark and so glad that you have picked up on the dynamics and touch/volume sensitivity stuff we're trying to showcase here. A few players use this technique and it provides such an amazing palette of tonal variations to express yourself with, we hope it leads to more people experiementing with the style. Especially when the amp is well suited to playing nice with the volume of your guitar, it's a really great way to vary your tone and expression of your music. Thanks for watching and thanks for your interest! Let us know when you get that first Boogie! :)
Wow , I wasn’t expecting this , the playing was absolute gorgeous , beautifully melodic and fluidly offbeat , put me in a trance 😵💫I’ve got to get his album and this amp !
It's because it's just guitar into amp, no effects pedals or anything. Real simple rig. That said, it's a fantastic guitar and amp, being wielded by an incredibly unique guitarist.
I’m glad I listened to this with headphones (recommended). This is an epic composition! Reminds me why I discovered and love epic heavy stuff like this on occasion despite being predominantly acoustic musician. Thanks!
Currently learning this song! awesome performance! Hey Mesa, any idea on where the knobs are on this performance? i wanna try and match it on my five : 35 .
I got a Studio 22 late 80's ...a Subwayrocket mid 90's and this sounds exactly like them both. Plus, it has a little more needed power and more versatility too. This is what i'd be buying if I were in the market today. Their EL84 amps will TRUELY let you sound as good as anything you've ever heard on a major album, regardless of your guitar.
Schecter was one of the first brand to build custom strat, Tom Anderson used to work for Schecter in the early 80's and after Dave Schecter sold the company, Tom continued to build pick up for the new owner in the first years. Mark Knofpler, Steve Lukather and also Dan Huff used Schecter strat for some period.
Ha! This is a great challenge, ZZ. That's a lot of amps so it would be quite the creative song with all the different tones available from the current lineup. Let's see what the marketing team says to this challenge. Thanks for watching! :)
Hi Smitty - good question. The Mark Five: 35 can ALSO be switched down to 10 watts, which, if you compare the two amps side by side in this setting, you MIGHT notice that the MK35 is a little bit stiffer and slightly louder at the same settings. You can also turn the MK35 down a tiny bit on the Master and the amps might sound almost identical. Shorter answer, the amps sound WAY more similar than different and you can probably make them sound exactly the same with slight settings changes. Hope this helps.
Ha! What ends up being OK with the wife is pretty darn important. :D Happy to help and good luck in your search - let us know how it goes and thanks for your interest!
Everybody knows that we are always lacking something. When you've got THE amp you always finally want something more. e.g I owned à mark V but was not convinced of the crunch channel which was super cold in spite of hotter rebias and running lower wattage. The lead channel was also pretty disppointing, it lacked gain. Then I purchased a Mark IV, it sounds really killer... Or more precisely the lead ch. Sounds killer and the clean is really nice..but it lacks à solo function, the crunch is à bit cold, and the global reliability is poor ("A" version with PCB that becomes conductive at some hot spots). I owned also a studio preamp that lacks flexibility and was f***** hard to dial in properly but had great cleans and super tight rythm tones. The triaxis has incredible control possibilities but as usual Mesa exagerates when they say they put mark IV and IIC+ circuits inside. The real mark IV sounds way better (compared with the same Power section) than its mode inside the Triaxis, and the 2C sounds the same but skinnier because mesa used the same circuit with à slightly different EQ to make think it is tighter.
Woww, I love the music so much, and I love Mesa even more. I have Mark 5 90 watt and Dual Rec. Really want to buy JP2C if I have $$ laying around somewhere 🤣 By the way, Mick Johnston’s style like Jeff Beck and Marty Friedman in to one body
Returned mine - far too 'quacky' and harsh for me. Replaced with a Fillmore 50, and loving it. Great video though, excellent player, composition and mix! Maybe if I had his skill...
@@Thomasdgoldentrue, but at low master volume levels there is a difference in the frequencies, so I have to change the EQ settings in order to play at low volumes.

Wonderful! I like the fact that you dont use too much gain. It shows the versatility of this amount! Round owner here.
That part at 5.20 was divine. Thank you for that.
The talent. It's incredible.
This track name could not be more ironic considering this man's skills.
Wow. Amazing playing..

From a modified AC30, to this head-cab. His tone really is not in the amp itself. Wow.

Magnifique morceau bien mélodique !a quand un duo avec mr Jeff Beck 😊?🎸💥
5:00 - 5:08 soooo good

Amazing
Jesus that shit was fucking gnarly at about 3:30...

I am a huge Mesa/Boogie fan, but imho, you sound best with the BE-100.
I kinda agree. He still sounds great now, but it felt "warmer" back then, no?
Im agree too :(
Thanks for watching, guys!
Huge Friedman fan here, but Mesa Boogie fan, too.. I think here the note definition is a bit more 'rounded'. People can like it or not.

What speaker is in that 1x12 cab?
Is the mesa 5-25watt loud enough to play 1 by 1 with classic drums ?
Yes.
