I would have included the carcharadons. Raven guard gene seed markers, the show up, the go into a feeding frenzy, they recruit, they leave. Not bad for chapter that was a joke originally
6:35 in the book "Dante" it's explained that the Blood Angels' practice of artistry and beauty is to help hone their focus and concentration, so they can more strongly resist the Red Thirst and Black Rage- new recruits spend a year practising arts and crafts before they even start combat training. Definitely makes sense they'd fall to it more easily when they give up the thing that helped them fight it!
"40k is a horror setting" That says so much with so few words and gives a great impression of EVERYTHING in the game so much better than a lot of pop culture depictions
The thing is the 40k setting is so large and expansive that it can literally serve as the backdrop for anything, you could even make slapstick comedy or a romance novel in the 40k setting. I don't really think everything needs to be grim dark and edgy for it to have a place in the 40k universe. You need light in order to have darkness.
I think it's honestly hard to define 40k at large as one genre because it contains such a variety of them in different media interpretation. Like the Watcher novel was straight up, actual existential horror, then Ciaphus Caine's novels are more like a military farce parody, then you have Gaunt's Ghosts that takes it to more of a gritty, espionage/guerilla action environment, Horus Heresy reads like borderline biblical epics, and then Eisenhorn (from what I understand, haven't cracked that open yet) is a political intrigue detective series. All of those books are still about just the Imperium with a variety of tones. This isn't to say that variety is bad, I think it's one of 40k's strengths that there's something for almost anyone in this universe. It does make it hard to pin down what 40k as a whole falls into, though. Not to be contrarian, but personally, closest genre I'd describe it as in a phrase is "Gothic Scifi."
@@techmarine83 hey even space marines lose once in a while, but mike tysons record is still very impressive, and he is savage enough to bite a dudes ear clean off.

They're what I'd describe as Kroot but Space Marines.
Oddly enough, Mortifactors are also probably one of the more 'progressive' Astartes chapters in terms of adhering to the Imperial faith. They recognize the rot in Imperial society that comes with blindly clutching doctrine and law too strictly. @@gilledgar2243go read the tiny amount of lore that exists on the Libators, another "wholesome," definitely G-man's geneseed, Ultramarines successor :P BLOOD FOR THE EMPEROR!!!
Given that Space Marine get a special organ that lets them consume memories of people that they eat, cannibalism is probably fairly common for space marines. (Which support your hypothesis of 40k being a horror setting)
Heyyy wait a minute; I'd recognise your painting style anywhere and you painted a mini for each faction! Very thoughtful and understated touch. Great vid too, much thinking fodder for a kitbashed successor chapter thank you for all the lore ideas!
The dark krakens sound really neat. If you were doing a take on them have you considered looking into a glow in the dark paint or ink for the bioluminenscence?
If you want to learn more about the Angels Resplendent, the Undying Martyr and how they all fit together I can’t recommend Peter Fehervari’s work enough. The books Fire Caste and the Reverie and the short story The Crown of Thorns all have subtexts that weave together and let you piece the mystery together. It’s probably some of the most engaging fiction Black Library has right now
While I wholeheartedly recommend checking out all of Fehervaris work (he is by far my favourite 40k author), I do feel the Reverie is by itself enough to piece it together ;)
@@PavelThorsonos Eh. The Reverie sets up why the Resplendent would be willing to listen to the undying martyr. Fire Caste and the Crown of Thorns let you figure out who the martyr actually is and how he got to Canvolis. But you’re right this is an undisguised attempt to get the Arkan more exposure. My favorite subplot in the dark coil is the Arkan inadvertently getting payback on the Resplendent. The fact that the boys in gray had no idea that yeeting the creepy preacher into a swamp brought about the total ruination of everything the chapter that helped conquer their homeworld stood for is hilarious

'The Reverie' by Peter Fehervari goes into detail of how the Angels Resplendent became Penitent. It's also a fantastic read as it shows how the horror genre can still apply to space marines.
Do a part 2! While not the most exciting color scheme (having undergone a couple revisions, including their heraldry), the Relictors have an interesting story. In fact the Eye of Terror campaign had featured them in a couple WD articles which introduced 'the mini codex', where a chapter was given special equipment to select, scenarios and even created allies for them! Based on the retcons of the Eye of Terror campaign, their fate is is a 'grey' area.
So, im relatively new to actually playing and painting warhammer. Ive been wanting to try space marines (orky boy here), but tbh i dont really like any chapters (love grey knights but im saving that for when im actually a decent player) but now im excited to paint some Dark Krakens!
Louise, love your videos, this one was awesome....perhaps in a part 2 of this type of video you can discuss "The Legion of the Damned". One of my favorites. Collected many of the figures , going back to Sgt Centurius which I had traveled to Toronto to obtain during the 100th store celebration ( 1996! man, im getting old). Im sorry I didnt read all the comments, in case you already mentioned the Damned.
The Angels Resplendent are also part of The Dark Coil series of books by Peter Fehervari (my personal favourite Black Library author). His novel The Reverie has them as main characters, and is primarily set on their home planet of Malpertius, pre them turning into the Angels Repentant. The colour scheme however is different, being a darker shade of blue in those books. with the left pauldron fully artistically personalized by each Marine. Highly recommend picking up this book!
Was lovely seeing yourself again at Warhammer World my Daughter and Two Nieces loved painting with you last year they were sad to hear you had left but loved it when they saw you again during the event they always love going to the events and doing the painting lol just gotta get them playing. I feel like the Absolvers from Wrath & Glory might make a good addition to the list. The RPG books speculate that they might be Ultramarine successors, given their obsession with upholding sworn oaths. I suspect they might actually be Dark Angels, though, because they have an entire mystery cult with secret rites. So secret, in fact, that they refuse to initiate their primaris brethren into those mysteries.
I listen to 40k videos while doing cardio! I know, so Dark!!! 😂 One of the best new channels I've come across. Keep up the good work! Also, I enjoy the darkness and horror of 40k being relatively a new fan. Making my first army of White Scars!!!!

I'm actually surprised the Carcharodons Astra didn't make the cut but you did pick some interesting examples for sure. The Dark Krakens certainly share that horror from the depths vibe, though I'm not sure if they are as barbaric as the Space Sharks. I'd love to see that Dark Krakens deep dive.
Fun video and I agree with others that I would like to see a deep dive into the Dark Krakens as I like hearing about Primaris chapters. I do also have a soft spot regarding the Mortificators because they show that you can have a successor chapter that is very unlike their parent chapter culturally speaking.
Really well done. I always like hearing about obscure facts about the various factions and groups in the 40K universe. Thank you Sister Lore Keeper. May the Emperor watch over you and yours. Great video.
First off I fully agree about the children’s books! Just because those books exist doesn’t mean we don’t still get the disturbing, shockingly horrifying “adult” content that we have always known and loved! Exceptionally dark loyalist chapters are my bread and butter for favorite 40K lore. I wrote a short story about the Carcharodons attacking a remote Imperium outpost gone rogue, and I did my best to make it feel like Jason Vorhees hunting these mortal planetary defenders, because I imagine that’s what it would feel like!
Also this video’s subject is why I collect Deathwatch, I get to tell little chapter specific stories about all the various chapter recruits in my single army, and the many ways they interact, collaborate and clash! From my excommunicated Mortefactors Chaplaon-turned-blackshield Judiciar Ugrun Tash, to my by-the-book Ultramarines Watchmaster Proxo Diomedes, who personally served in the Tyrannic Wars, the Deathwatch are a bottomless source of diverse chapter storytelling and conversion opportunities!
All chapters are dark. Xenophobia. Hate as a 'good' character trait. Intolerance to the max. And that's just the Ultramarines. In 40K the Sith would be executed for lack of all these three things. Compared to Roboute, Darth Sidious is a cross between Ghandi and a hippie.
Maybe you can do lore/painting series! So a lore video like this going into some cool background and then a follow-up video when you paint up a miniature from said background!
I've already made two of those! One for rainbow warriors and then for Squats! This video was supposed to be that but there was just tooo much lore and painting to have it be just one vid
Well, according to the "Reverie" book I'd say changing from Resplendent to Penitent was more like traiding borderline tzeentchism (with a bit of slaanesh) for a bit of good old imperial flagellation... not as bad as it might've been, considering 40k, eh?
Wait, the Mortefactors come from a planet where they worship the Ultimate Warrior? Are they also known for snorting, wearing facepaint and bellowing promos about their hated enemy HO KOGAN?
I started painting Lamenters in 2016. Since then I have spent £500 and counting in counselling, am on anti-depressants and anxiety tablets, and have won no raffles. Don’t do it.
Just found your channel by way of this video. 100% would love a Dark Kraken deep dive, as salamanders are by far my favorite first founding chapter. Also would love to see the difference between a new deep dive and your Rainbow Warriors video with the very pleasing advancement in your video format.
I’m not a big fan of deep oceans, but I love the idea of a Dark Kraken army! Edit: I love the Mortifactors and can confirm they are certified freaks, 7 days a week.
I seriously think the Exorcists should have been a Grey Knight successor chapter Mostly because them being Imperial Fists seems weird with what they do Its either that or they're Word Bear successor
😳Angels Resplendent (though art-loving and sophisticated) were very creepy and warp-tainted way before the reformation to Angels Penitent. At least, that was my impression after reading Peter Fehervari dark coil books. Anyway, thank you for the video, Louise, you're amazing:)
Absolutely loved this content, really fun and easy to follow and interesting to see a different perspective as well. Definitely love to see more. Thank you very much for such great videos.
Those Dark Krakens seem a rum lot! 😜 I have not been attracted to space marines, though I could be persuaded to make an exception for them, so please persuade me with a 'deep dive'.

@@roguehobbies Cool, i'll make sure to check them out then :)
Well, according to the "Reverie" book I'd say changing from Resplendent to Penitent was more like traiding borderline tzeentchism (with a bit of slaanesh) for a bit of good old imperial flagellation... not as bad as it might've been, considering 40k, eh?
Exorcists always make me think of the "John Stalvern kill by demons" meme.
"Hey, it's the Executioners, the emperor's angels have arriv-is he wearing a skinned face?"
**Mick Gordon's Doom soundtrack steadily getting louder**
Love watching lore videos. Can you please do another one with the Black Dragons chapter? They are so cool 🙂
Awesome job! Would love to see you do more lore videos like this! Also, A Dark Kraken deep dive would be amazing.
I've been listening to A LOT of occulus imperia, I am dizzy from this juxtaposition....😂
Was wondering if you had a tutorial on painting a Pastel type scheme? I want to paint my Grey Knight in a way no one has before!
I have a tutorial on my RUclips for painting pink and the prismatic power sword is about as pastely as it gets!!
I’m not a big fan of deep oceans, but I love the idea of a Dark Kraken army!
Edit: I love the Mortifactors and can confirm they are certified freaks, 7 days a week.
No Blood Ravens eh? Even though they may be made with Traitor Gene-Seed? Well... Ok then...
Weirdo little triple freak weardo's ... thats my chapter! 😂 Used to just call em my space canibals but i'm stealing that line from now on 😅😂
I seriously think the Exorcists should have been a Grey Knight successor chapter
Mostly because them being Imperial Fists seems weird with what they do
Its either that or they're Word Bear successor
Please do the Dark Kraken video! :D
The Dark Kraken head Librarian is....Aquaman?
Pretty much ye
I would love to see a Phobos Librarian with the cloak in bioluminescent colours as the Dark Kraken character!
Those Dark Krakens seem a rum lot! 😜
I have not been attracted to space marines, though I could be persuaded to make an exception for them, so please persuade me with a 'deep dive'.
I had enough❤of Tyranids , JOY❤ i wan'T Tau#Happy#Ending✝️☦️☯️
I am definitely not watching this again, in order to choose my next hobby project
yeah i fragging hate the direction 40k has gone and i loathe the Primaris, i prefer how the Firstborn marines look especially the mk i, ii, iii, and v armours
great video, love to see more like this
I'd love a video about the Dark Kraken chapter, be it lore, kitbash or painting 🦑
Louise,
Check out the Soul Drinkers if you want another chapter for "OOPS, all Loyalist Shenanigans!"
I have an entire firstborn army of them from back in the late 2000s. Also making a Primaris faction of them, as they have been brought back in novels.
Thanks for a massive lore video. Absolutely loved it. RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!
PS: I'm stealing your idea to do a bunch of individual marines at epic tiny scale for a parade display.
I know about all of this chapters but I still loved to hear about them all. Other strange loyal boys i can name:Fire Hawks,Flesh Eaters,Knights of Blood,Subjugators,Excoriators,Executioners,Red Talons
Cannot wait for painting guide about all chapters in video
