One guy at my former FLGS had a trick for basing his Cadians: he just coated the bases around the minis with a layer of pva glue, then drowned them in dried oregano, tapped off the excess, let it all set, then coated all of the oregano in very watered down pva to fixate it and boom, guardsmen with great looking natural leaf litter and aromatic enough to offset the usual funky gaming room grognard smell😂
A half-foot of Silver During one of the chapter's earliest engagements Chapter Master D'Arquitens famously decreed during a seemingly hopeless defense that he would "Take not one single step back, nor give a foot of ground to the foul ork." as a symbol of bravado and honourable oath-taking as was chivalric tradition within the Chapter. Leading through example his firmly planted feet did not move while he fought ceaselessly for over 40 hours against the green orkoid tide. Emboldened by this daring feat his fellow marines fought with incredible fury and victory was within their grasp. At the final juncture the Warboss himself set upon D'Arquitens. Their weapons clashed again and again until with a thunderous blow the surrounding onlookers saw their chapter master take a blow head on. A groan of despair arose from all around as the impact drove the Chapter Master back, until the Warboss miraculously fell dead, his heart impaled by their liege-lord's mighty relic blade. With his death the ork horde broke and the Astartes claimed victory. As the marines cheered suddenly their celebrations were interrupted by laughter? D'Arquitens looked down at his left greave, seeing where it had clearly been pushed back from the jarring impact. He had broken his oath at the very last juncture but uncharacteristically found humour in his failure. Taking a valuable lesson in how sometimes even sworn oaths must be broken he decreed that the "half a foot" that his left leg had been shifted be henceforth made a permanent part of the chapter's livery. A constant reminder of flexibility in the face of defeat. Throughout the Emperor's Grief's long history other such amendments have been made, with some veterans remarking that eventually they will be fighting entirely without colours at all. The right-most pauldron being another notable example, but that is a story for another time...
It's weird to understand how you see your own work because I really look up to you as one of my favourite and best painters - social media is full of successes, not failures or struggles and insecurities. Thank you for reminding the internet that we are all human and on our own journeys. Your work is absolutely incredible 🥰
If you're not finding things you're not happy with, and pushing to solve those problems, you're not progressing as a painter. Seriously, there are few things that can push you to improve your quality of work, and skill set, like low-key hating your output, and subsequently doing something about it. Then it's just rinse, lather, repeat, until you're questioning how you're winning all these competitions and awards...
@@andrewamann2821 This applies to many many more areas than just painting. It is our ability to struggle and grow as a result that defines us as a species.
Honestly, the first idea that came to me was a Blood Angels successor Chapter. They embody the Emperor's grief at the death of Sanguinius and their chapter emblem having a drop works well to tie that in. Additionally, the purple makes sense to me because red (blood)+blue (water from tears)=purple. Maybe their Chapter has a higher incidence of members falling to the Black Rage because they're tied not only to the defect in the Blood Angels' gene-seed, but also psychically tied to the Emperor's grief at the loss of Sanguinius before his eyes. They presence of plenty of gold also ties in well to them paying tribute to the Sanguine Gaurd more so than other Blood Angels.
The part of them being purple is because they want to redeem themselves in the eyes of the Emperor. To the point that they would feel they deserve to don the Emperor's own heraldry.....unlike the former purple wearers.
With the red and the pointing to the sky, I could see them being a loyalist chapter comprised of Word Bearer geneseed, spreading the good word of the Emperor, and being battlefield orators and leaders of mortal soldiers. Run them with guard units if possible.
With the purple and the name, this could be some kind of loyalist Emperor's Children successor. Their name might mean that THEY'RE the ones grieving because of the betrayal of their parent chapter. The grey stripe could be some kind of command color, where the higher seniority of the marine the more grey they have.
I really enjoy your work! Oh, the half silver leg could be like a connection to an important battle and/or the ad mech. Like the chapter's first major campaign. The Emperor's Grief name has Lamenters feel. Victory at extreme cost, putting humanity before themselves.
My New Year’s resolution was to get back into painting Warhammer since the last one I did was the Necron that came free with White Dwarf issue 217 (I was 12 years y/o). I followed the instructions to the letter and glued sand to the base which I brushed brown and green… and then never painted again. I’m using this video as pure motivation to pick up a brush again.
I totally understand the hyper focus rabbit hole! Forgetting to eat, or drink. Louise, I love your style and use of saturated colours. It’s unique to only you!
The artistic fixation is real. I've lost the whole day working on a painting. You just get into the zone, and when you snap out, it's like, "Oh shit woah," and then the mental exhaustion hits ya.
Thought on the half silver leg. The chapter adopted that motif after a few of their companies were spared destruction from a warp incursion in which the timely arrival of the Grey Knights prevented this. The Grey Knights took high casualties and the chapter wanted in memorialize this sacrifice on their power armor from that day forward.
Firstly this video was so fascinating to watch. That has to be one of the best darn space marines I’ve seen! As a novamarine painter myself I was stoked to hear you mention them! Lore reason for the Iron/Steel leg, it represents the chapter ethos of unwaving duty no matter the odds. Stand resolute.
I’ve been at this for years and I’m still Only at the, “I believe they’re tabletop ready and that’s fine for me, please don’t look too close” phase. 😅 But seeing you tackle this has made me want to try this approach out. 😊
Lore Idea (Inspired by the Blood Angels Black Rage): The Emperor’s Greif Chapter emerged from a region plagued by constant warp anomalies, causing intense psychic disturbances. The chapter's gene-seed is subtly influenced by these chaotic energies, granting them a heightened connection to the Warp. Despite their formidable combat prowess, the Marines struggle with haunting visions of the Emperor's past, burdening them with a collective sorrow known as the Emperor's Grief. This emotional weight fuels their determination in battle, as they strive to redeem the pain suffered by the Emperor in millennia long gone.
He looks superb. It's quite surprising how well this mish mash of different colours have ended up working so well together. Whilst there will always always room for improvement, you are an excellent painter and I think if any of us compare ourselves with the best mini painters in the world we're all going to feel like our painting isn't good enough. That's social media in a nut shell unfortunately.
Thanks for bringing us along on your self improvement journey! I've heard: "Art is never finished, only abandoned." I want to get into this hobby, but I'm scared of failing, which is probably the least useful fear ever. Of course, if I'm just doing this for me, "failure" is my own definition. Hm... Edit: re-organized the "Art is never finished...", and added the admission of fear.
Amazing work Louise. Taking a proactive hand at something you feel weak at something you see as shameful or not good enough is a massive sign of strength. Addressing what causes that and working to improve is the only way we can grow. And yes taking moments for distance and self care are absolutely part of that process. As for the chapter lore? This whole process kind of reminded me of the Fallen. As lion El'Jonson has returned he has taken some of these redeemable warriors to fight at his side. Unfortunately these forces are extremely limited in number. To combat this a Primaris demi-company has formed using geneseed of these redeemed Fallen. Under The Lions watchful eye The Emporer's Grief took to their first engagements hungry to prove that not all those who falter are lost. The chapter keep this a loosely guarded secret opting to let their actions speak for themselves long before such a history is revealed. The Emporer's Grief is often deployed in unison with other Imperial forces. Especially those that are suspected of renegade action. Though they can quell rebellion with bolter and blade they are just as likely to avoid the in fighting altogether with empathy and inspiring battlefield litanies.
Great video! The easiest approach to red is what the grimdark people are doing: Forget about thinking that the leg is red: it's brown with red highlights. Once you overhighlight to death, the way many of us do in green skins, mimicking the old Warhammer Fantasy green... it's just properly red. The same trick with the grey, really. When you watch, say, Jose David's golden demon grey knight, you see that the base color is very dark, so the midtone ends up darker than we'd think.
The name and unique scheme are already making me fans of these fabulous boys and would love to see them further developed! As for the grey strip maybe a chapter tradition is that with the exception of the most important identifiers the chapter actually have to EARN the right for them to rep the chapter scheme with there armor getting more filled out the more glory they win for the emperor. This marine with only the final segment of his leg missing is close to being fully honored!
You have actually inspired me to give my Iyanden another crack. Having painted Black Legion only for 20 years, I decided during lockdown to branch out, only to find I REALLY struggle with yellow & blue. Time to fix this without casting judgement on myself as I usually do!
I'm sure I won't be the only person to suggest this, but the half-split leg seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the chapter. To me, all that bright red and rich gold and royal purple speaks of a chapter that was very confident - perhaps *too* confident. Therefore, the choice to disrupt the livery with grey seems designed to make marines of the Emperor's Grief cognisant of their imperfections, the ways in which as a chapter they can improve. It commemorates not a great battle, but a crushing defeat, perhaps involving the loss of a major Imperial world - one in which their hubris overruled their mastery of war and condemned countless lives to the ravages of perfidious Chaos-worshippers. It was this immense defeat, in which the chapter's forces were all but wiped out, that changed how they saw their mission; protecting the Imperium through constant warfare and continuous, relentless improvement. Perfection is impossible, say the Astartes of the Emperor's Grief, for only the Emperor is perfect; but to strive for that perfection is to bring glory to His name. They changed from a chapter of relentless melee attack to one of insurmountable defence, from one that scorned long-range marksmanship to one that mastered it, from one that saw themselves as angels of death to one that saw themselves as arisen to new life in His service. They are the Emperor's Grief, and their mercy is efficient death.
A great exercise in pushing one's self outside of their comfort zone. People not only need to do this to become better painters, they also need to be okay with failing; possibly a few times before they figure it out. We are in an age of consume consume consume (via RUclips or social media), but afraid of putting it to practice. Then we blame our anxiety as an excuse to not try something. Take back control and be powerful! This video is a fantastic motivator to get in there and try new things. It will bleed into other areas of your life! SIDE NOTE: Once you do figure out a color or technique, don't let that be your default with every project. If you find you really like how Mephiston Red performs, for example, that doesn't mean you should use that paint for every instance where you need red. Sometimes the properties don't align with the overall aesthetic you are hoping for. Or if you figure out how to achieve a circular highlight through stippling, that doesn't mean you should use stippling for every instance where you need a circular highlight; different textures or materials being represented, as well as the volumes of the piece means that you may need to approach it differently. So again, find a dummy model or even a drawing app to try something out and continue to push your own boundaries.
Your favorite chapter being the Totally-Not-Magnus-The-Nerd's-Thousand-Sons Rainbow Warriors makes the uhm akchually pose seem more like a Freudian slip or some Tzeenchy trickery than anything.
Roses bloom from new growth. That, and the fact that such a skilled artist can be open and honest about things that they struggle with makes this a fantastic video. Great job! I look forward to seeing more videos in the future
had an idea for that white leg, it is the one part of their armor they spend each sun set cleaning. Being the grief, the anticipate disappointment, so as a small symbol of showing that they only exist to serve, they will make sure there is a shinning white part of them on display for all of the warp to see. They carry white paint with them to touch it up if needed. It is the leg as it is the root to a tree - their commitment, the foundation of their cause.
Umm, ACKCHYUALLY, you did an amazing job! Props to you for opening about your weaknesses and insecurities and for actively trying to improve upon them. I love the color scheme and design and his sassy stance is perfect!
I took some minis to a competition the other week. It absolutely DESTROYED my confidence. But hearing someone as phenomenal as you saying you don't feel like you're a great painter sometimes is weirdly helpful because if even you feel that way sometimes, it's worth going on.
Oh, do I feel you on this one, especially on the NMM gold bits. I've improved on painting red and purple, for sure, but convincing NMM is still evading me too! Obsessive head space? Been there a time or three, for sure. Your humor always makes your videos all the more fun to watch, for what its worth. I've been at it for about 15 years now and I'm still not nearly where I want to be as a painter, believe you me. Merry Christmas from the fine and glorious state of Texas, Miss Louise!
The main thing the half grey leg makes me think of is the saying "one foot in the grave", in reference to someone who is near death. So maybe it is a tribute to a high ranking member who is still a total badass, like an ancient Dreadnought who is held in reverence (kind of like Bjorn the Fell-Handed). Given their name it could also be in reference to the Emperor himself. Or maybe there is something about the chapter that has them all in a near death state.
I paint as an artist mainly Oil paints I have my style etc but I've learnt to filter out all the other artists who are amazing and ground breaking. The secret is to focus on your style and develop it further, iron out any weak areas and learn acheiveable new techniques. Ive painted miniatures mainly for board games Dungeon Crawlers and I'm not brilliant but I'm happy with my results. Do I wish I was amazing of course but I know my limitations and miniature painting I never have the patience 😂. All artists regardless of what medium they use get into that head space of not stopping or taking a step back to view the art as a whole. I get like thst sometimes but have learnt to say "No you will end up messing it up". Leave it for a few hours comeback with fresh eyes. It is hard to get into thst mind set but with practice it becomes easier - the other is knowing when to stop painting and say finished. Great content by the way.
On first glimpse, the unpainted marine you show at 15:46 looked like he was giving me the finger. But on second look, squinting my eyes, he sadly wasn't 😂
at least you actually have made that homebrew chapter. i'm still a YEAR into deciding my chapter colors and schemes! I'M GONNA DIE BEFORE I GET IT DONE AT THIS RATE!! DAMN YOU PROCRASTINATION/REAL LIFE!!
I can definitely relate to the obsessiveness leading to poor health. I was trying to do something new and challenging a few years ago, and got so wrapped up in what I was doing that I managed to give myself some of the symptoms of anaphylactic shock (I didn't recognise it, a doctor did later). This led to a six month journey of going to various medical specialists, while carrying around two epipens, until they came to the conclusion that I just needed to stop my blood pressure from falling to low in the heat.
This is quite an informative video for a variety of issues. The most glaring one is Sugs criticising her own work and how relatable that is. I actually like your reds and purples, I really just pegged it as being your style due to how vibrant they are. Your painting style is like a lighthouse in a sea of grimdark.
I love reds, my tip for highlighting red is that you should generally still highlight them with white and pink and then if you want to warm it up or bring back saturation you can glaze with yellow or red
Thankyou! I tried the split checker scheme and it was exactly what I needed to make my chapter more knightly. I would absolutely love to see a video about how you make profiles.
I've always pictured The Emperor's Grief as an Iron Hands successor chapter, as a tribute to the first primarch slain to the heresy. The purple colour being a homage to the once strong bond between the iron hands and the emperor's children and the red being the blood of Ferrus manus. I imagine each of the first 5 great companies embodying the 5 stages of grief.
Thanks for this video! Not only did you show a ton of great painting tips, but also wasn’t shy about your struggles and gave ideas how to deal with them. It’s good to know that such great painter as you also can get stuck and not make any progress for hours, now I know it’s not only me and my lack of skills 😉
Absolutely love this video! It really shows the struggle and joy within this hobby! It's just so easy to quit rather than push through when things gets difficult.. ❤
This turned out incredible!! In particular the tree really works with the purple basecoat. I also like to imagine that he's heard another space marine make a minor error and he's going "_umm, actually..._"
Thank you for your videos and candour as they have inspired me to produce some of the best work I have ever done in 30 years of collecting, seeing your love of the craft and hobby makes me want to do more. I spent so long wanting to be better, for my models to be perfect, my brother can paint as well as the box art, and it wasn't until the last year I realised that is not what I want from painting. I'm not painting to be the best I don't have that drive or time, I paint to have kick ass models on my shelf and for relaxation. I will get better and try to improve but this is for me.
Great work, really like the fact you covered something you felt your not as good at. It's nice to see someone show they aren't just immediately good at something. This hobby takes practice, patience and perseverance. My favourite way to do red is to add a bit of blue (or purple) to the base shade and just work up to pure red, with maybe the very lightest touch of yellow for the pin highlight. Also welcome to the world of adding purple to everything now, its how I do almost all shading.
You are honestly an amazing painter! It's really cool to see your process and what you think of your own work! Now for the emperor's grief, I was thinking the official records state that they are a successor chapter for the blood angels but the other chapters and inquisition suspects something else. After being commissioned by roboute guilliman personally using a 'unknown' gene seed, the emperor's grief have been tasked to seek knowledge as about the eye and to find a way to close it! Due to their task, the need for perfection and almost cult like worship of the emperor many suspects that perhaps the gene seed used by fabius bile to create Fulgrim's clone may have been used. Because of their task and more likely the lack of trust, this chapter is always accompanied by an inquisitor and squad of sisters of battle.
I started watching Vince Venturella’s exploring colours series & found it very helpful. Im definitely with you on NMM the whole idea just puts me off, I guess this could be me New Year’s resolution, along with using oil washes too.
Alright, lore idea for the half Grey leg... Since they're called "The Emperor's Grief" (love that name, btw 🎉), you could make the reasoning for the Grey being there is that is the signification of the Emperor's physical form dying in the Matierium, while the Gold is the signification of his rebirth as the new god of mankind, being born anew as the one thing he never intended to be, nor ever wanted to be... and us such, the Emperor is in his grief of new role, and in grief with how humanity has fallen so low. So while the Red, Gold, and Purple are all signs that the Emperor is very much alive in the Immaterium, he is very much dying in the Materium, which is what the Grey signifies on the leg. Just an idea to go with. Hopefully, I explained it well enough, and it actually made sense. Love the work you do, Louise 😄😊🎉
I know that pushing yourself to admit and work on your weaknesses and how powerful that is especially for an audience of burgeoning artists is the whole point of the video, so I in no way want to diminish your struggles by brushing them off and saying “what are you talking about?? Its good enough!” Or something like that. That being said… This is seriously one of if not my favorite color schemes I’ve seen on a space marine. Like holy crap Im so in love with the design the shading the highlights the base colors the gold the INCREDIBLE silver the red and purple mix so well aaaAAAA ITS SO COOL
To clarify; As someone who hopes to one day make it in the art world myself, I know the frustration of working hard on something, feeling like im crap at it and working even harder to push myself to improve, only for someone to kinda brush away how hard ive worked to improve. In some weird egotistical way sometimes compliments can almost feel worse? Eh maybe thats just something I need to work on. Anyways, I didn’t want to dismiss all the hard work you’ve put in to trying to improve yourself! All that being said, really, truly, I genuinely think you knocked it out of the park :)
Oh my god this looks amazing, I especially love the plinth! I was so happy when your channel started because I was pumped to see another woman joining the creators I already love to see at the face of the hobby. I have loved every video and you immediately became my favourite RUclipsr, your personality and style and talent are incredible, and I’m excited every time you release a video! This one was an amazing idea, it’s great to see how you work through difficulties and you’ve inspired me to try challenging myself like this at some point! Can’t wait for your next video!
It's good to know that even professional painters have some things they still aren't comfortable with doing. The hobby can be overwhelming, and this makes it more approachable.
Purple and green makes awesome stonework. A guy did a painting tutorial on HeroQuest doors, four doors four styles. The last one was purple/blue and green, inspired by Castle Greyskull. It was by wide agreement the best of the lot.
I used to use the same imageboards you would post your old orcs in, like ten years ago. They actually influenced how I paint a good deal of my minis to this very day. I have a much brighter, happier band of goblins than I would have ever had otherwise now!
The things I like about your videos are your accent, your enthusiam and your painting style which is unique amongst RUclipsrs I watch. Keep it up - love your work - even though I never touch Warhammer as it is obviously just a way to opem portasl to the Netherworld. As for your over-working, remember what Leonardo da Vinci said "art is never finished, only abandoned." He spent literally years on the Mona Lisa - 7 or 12 depending on who you ask. I think you should team up with Kiera of Broadsword Minis. That Oliver person is obviously holding her back and she also has a lovely accent.
Good Grief :) May the Ackchyually Marines fight well and prosper. Now the important thing is to keep at it. I had a similar idea a little time ago: I'm bad at NMM so I decided to paint my LRL army in NMM. So far I have painted two of the aelves and finished six different warbands for MESBG. Good luck for your project and I'll take a new stab at the aelves.
I can get overly focused on a task, and have learnt to set myself a timer for between 20 and 60 minutes. When it goes off, I have to put down my task, stand up, and turn it off. The act of standing will usually prompt me to go "oh, I should eat / pee / whatever." I found this a more successful tool than some other things, because the only extra step I need to remember is to set the timer, and everything else just flows from that. Especially if you're used to setting timers whilst cooking - then your brain has the "oh, go deal with the timer" reflex reinforced by things catching fire when you ignore it. What works for me may or may not work for you, but it's an idea if you want to try it. Learning to walk away from a project and come back tomorrow was harder and still isn't perfect, but one time when I was exhausting myself over my R2-D2 build, my father pointed out something very helpful: I'm in my late 40s. I'm probably going to live at least another forty years. I have *lots* of time to get this droid finished and enjoy it. I know it's not quite the same because you need content for your videos, because that's your job now. But still: you're almost twenty years younger than I am. You're probably going to live for another sixty years. You have so much time to finish your projects; it doesn't have to happen today. And I know you know this; but sometimes, having someone outside your head say it helps one remember these things.
I started painting miniatures when I was 12, I'm now 45. I recently dug out my old Ork army and I can honestly say the best model is my old Gazghull from 2nd Edition. Honestly though that's not a surprise because the Characters are the focal point of the army and I painted the Characters over a white undercoat and the rest of the models over a black underfoot to save time & effort. It also lends them a certain look that at the time I preferred to full blending & highlighting.
so, i have an idea for the lore of the chapter :) there we go: The Emperor's Grief is officially a successor chapter of the Blood Angels. The Chapter was added to the ranks of the blood angels in the ultima founding and they quickly accepted most of the traditions of their progenitor chapter. in loving memory of their lost primarch they keep their left greave half without any colour. the silver represents the mourn for their primarch and that they are not seeing the world in proper colours anymore after their primarchs demise, one of the greatest tragedies the empire ever endured. As with alot of the blood angels successors they seem to be more psychicly adept. most of their marines of the line experience visions of their primarch and sometimes they have tendency for prescience. strangely those visions always seems to be mostly gray with only spots of colour. a clear iridescent metallic red and gold is a returning colour in those visions. when they speak about their visions with their brethren from the librarius or chaplain they describe the incident of their primarch falling different than other blood angels chapters. they see a planet of gold with happy citizens and a wild feral beast in the shape of a wolf attacks their primarch vicously. the primarch falls and shatters like glass on the floor. red shards the colour of glistening blood fall down the stairs their primarch was standing on. As this is not the fall of sanguinus as it is told by the imperium, they tend to keep their visions a secret. The chapter also sufferes from the black rage. its substantially more rare than in other chapters of the blood angels and always ends in a gruesome death as the body of the marine starts to mutate rapidly. Its the Chaplains duty to stop this mutation as soon as it appears as their is no saving of the marine at this point.
Well, its never fun to hear people say they are dumb! No one sees themselves like others do, cause you are FAR from dumb! Brave to say the least, i would consider you a top tier, like, master painter!! Easily in the .1% of the hobby! Its mind blowing to see people so talented being so modest, youve taught me more than ive ever expected to know about painting ❤ i hope you keep making these fantastic videos! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this, 🙏 😊 its very much appreciated!
This is an awesome video/painting video idea! I think that pushing yourself to paint things you arent comfortable with is a very healthy approach to the art side of the hobby. hell, that same mentality is why i began painting warhammer models in the first place! I have had a bunch of injuries between my brain and my right hand, and the idea of losing fine motor control sucked, so i picked up painting 40k as a hobby. I figure that pushing my brain/muscle connection to its fine detail limits are the best way to keep my fine motor control intact as i get older. Seems to be working.
With the purple, I feel a disgraced Praetorian guard style backstory is what's needed. They would wear purple and their relationship to the Roman emperors was variable. Also, your painting is an aspiration and inspiration.
Backstory idea: the grey on the leg could perhaps represent a mark of penance or something. Perhaps there was a hive city whose occupants were under the boot of the enemy, and the chapter wasn't able to rescue them on time. This year, I've started actually tackling some of the things I've been afraid to do with painting (infantry camo), and so far I've been pretty happy with my progress. I take plenty of breaks though. I've found that if I paint in small stages and small batches as I learn, I can come back to each stage with fresh eyes and adjust my approach. I do the same with art as well, very iterative. Your results may vary, but this is a nice piecemeal approach that works for me. :)
For the background: The guardians of a collection of systems in the galactic north, the Imperial Fists successor chapter The Emperor's Grief were the honourable knights and protectors of flourishing paradise worlds, keeping them safe from the horrors of the galaxy. But with the fall of the Cadian Gate, Chapter Master Roger Hobert was forced to use the Chapter Fleet to purge the rampaging hordes of a chaos uprising, who were driven to madness and heresy by the uproar in the Warp, sacrificing much of his Chapter's strength. Now, the grim duty of patrolling the orphaned worlds falls to the rest of his brothers, who travel the ruins of once splendid cities and shrines. Seeking the left-over roaming abominations and slaying them in knightly combat, they are ever reminded of their failure by the silent stones of their fallen worlds.
In Heraldry a split or quartered arms is usually down to combining two noble lines. If Space Marines follow the same pattern then the Emperors Grief might be a chapter originally combined from the remains of two chapters (maybe they were nearly wiped out after fighting together with only a few left?) And the white leg might be the remnant of a previous quartering (or 'dimidatment') in the past. So maybe 1000s of years ago in the Age of Apostasy the Bringers of Sorrow (purple), fought alongside the Grievers of the Throne (white) maybe against a corrupt Cardinal or something, and were nearly wiped out apart from a handful of guys. Then Sebastian Thor said they could combine their Chapters to create the Bringers of Grief. Then millennia later during the Indomnitus Crusade the Bringers of Grief (Purple and White) fought back to back with the Emperors swords and were nearly wiped out (again), but G-Man said they could combine their chapters (again for the Bringers of Grief) to continue as a new Chapter - The Emperors Grief. With that single White element being the only record of the Grievers of the Throne (though their legacy goes on).
It came out looking great! Your chapter name suits your colour choices if you consider colour theory and the emotions they evoke. As for the a lore idea behind the white/grey spot. You could say that the longer a Marine serves in The Emperor's Grief, the more his armour is coloured. Your Marine might just be a veteran.
Alternative title for this video 'Eleventy reasons why Louise hates herself set to Spaltoon (?) music' Also, that Primaris came out brill, don't beat yourself up. Seriously, I'm always envious of people who can do NMMs, but I do wanna say you're REALLY helping me come to terms with my perfectionist streak.
Thank you! That was your best video yet! You taught us excellent lessons, AND painted the best space marine EVER! You are really rocking that NMM, keep it up!
@rougehobbies I won't lie your becoming my favourite RUclipsr in general and you talk about a love of mine lol, I currently want more friends in the hobby/people to play with but have no idea how to/have bad anxiety about it lol

That pose pointing to the sky as if to say, "This one's for The Big E!" I LOVE it!
@roguehobbies what is that app? I can't seem to find it.
@@HavokmkrStudioAre you asking about the: 'applying colour schemes to miniatures' app? It is called: *Impcat*
I am also curious: What program are you using on your tablet?

During one of the chapter's earliest engagements Chapter Master D'Arquitens famously decreed during a seemingly hopeless defense that he would "Take not one single step back, nor give a foot of ground to the foul ork." as a symbol of bravado and honourable oath-taking as was chivalric tradition within the Chapter.
That’s really good actually haha.
Fits with the finger pose as well. Like he's making a rousing speech to his men about this.
The pointing to the sky is very renaissance appeal to god pose. Really fits the holy knight vibe. Awesome storytelling.
THAT WAS THE IDEA!!
Inshallah, the enemies of the Imperium shall fall
Emperors grief.. The whiningest space marines .Known for over complicated battle plans. And mustered colored helmuts. . As well as obscure vocabulary.
@@dantipton1987 like the Dark Angels, with less (outward) grimdark

They presence of plenty of gold also ties in well to them paying tribute to the Sanguine Gaurd more so than other Blood Angels.
or the wounds of all of the martyrs--purple for the bruises and red for the blood.
The part of them being purple is because they want to redeem themselves in the eyes of the Emperor. To the point that they would feel they deserve to don the Emperor's own heraldry.....unlike the former purple wearers.
I really like this idea. It makes good sense.
The silver/unpainted metal could easily be for those that that have yet to transition to the Sanguine Guard
With the red and the pointing to the sky, I could see them being a loyalist chapter comprised of Word Bearer geneseed, spreading the good word of the Emperor, and being battlefield orators and leaders of mortal soldiers. Run them with guard units if possible.
Ave Imperator deus es.
Shame GW killed the allies rules because that would be fun to see!
@@Randicore I'm sure it'll return eventually.
@@cinderheart2720 Maybe. They've made it harder and harder every edition since 8th, and in 10e you can only ally knights and Daemons.
With the purple and the name, this could be some kind of loyalist Emperor's Children successor. Their name might mean that THEY'RE the ones grieving because of the betrayal of their parent chapter.
The grey stripe could be some kind of command color, where the higher seniority of the marine the more grey they have.
Or grey because they're sombre and serious and not all hedonistic and Slaaneshi.
I really enjoy your work!
Oh, the half silver leg could be like a connection to an important battle and/or the ad mech. Like the chapter's first major campaign.
The Emperor's Grief name has Lamenters feel. Victory at extreme cost, putting humanity before themselves.
yeah! Like he has grief because they all routinely die defending things.
I love the lamenters, they would definitely be bros
@@roguehobbies They definitely need some nice friends
Half of the chapter was lost fighting some necrons or something, and therefore half the leg has lost color to reflect those that fell.
If the grey/silver was on the red leg, it could represent rising from burning ashes.
AKSHUALLY! I enjoyed watching the progress of this model and making memes of it.
THE MEME COMMANDER 😍
i've been watching mini painting videos for years, but this is one of the coolest concepts for a video i've seen.
Glad you liked it!
Omg that's a totally sweet scheme; a little busy but WAY better than the old GW schemes that were garish and clashy
Bring back tiger pattern marines.
@@roguehobbies Yes the old RT colours and patterns where so much better than the current monotone colours.
@@roguehobbies Ok now you need to make a tiger pattern marine video.
Pose is giving me a space techno viking vibe :p
RIP bryan angell.
I went back and watched the "Bring out your lead!" Episode Rogue hobbies did. Thank you for doing that ❤
I totally understand the hyper focus rabbit hole!
The free handing of the symbol, just mind blowing. Incredible work.
You're my fave painter, don't pay too much heed to social media, love your endless positivity
Fabulous job. The struggle to get past our own perceived limitations never ends. Bravo for tackling this project. Keep growing.
Wow Louise, amazing attitude to your craft and a beautiful paint scheme. Inspiring.
That base SLAPS! On the model, and the jingle of the chapter transitions!
I’ve been at this for years and I’m still
Only at the, “I believe they’re tabletop ready and that’s fine for me, please don’t look too close” phase. 😅
But seeing you tackle this has made me want to try this approach out. 😊
Lore Idea (Inspired by the Blood Angels Black Rage):
The Emperor’s Greif Chapter emerged from a region plagued by constant warp anomalies, causing intense psychic disturbances.
Purple has easily become one of my top three colors to paint with. Great for shading or adding life to organic subjects.
I feel this video in my soul.
Its like you're in my head saying all the things i think.
I feel like his theme tune is Dance Commander by Electric Six.
"Whoo gives the orders here?"
Thanks for bringing us along on your self improvement journey!
I've heard: "Art is never finished, only abandoned."
I want to get into this hobby, but I'm scared of failing, which is probably the least useful fear ever.
They are the Emperor's Grief, and their mercy is efficient death.
these are LITERALLY the things I struggle with most. This video was ABSOLUTELY for people like me.
Merry Christmas!! Thanks for all the awesome vids to watch and most importantly for the Inspiration!
A trick I use with red is to highlight with pink to white without going into yellow or orange and then glaze with red to brink back the “redness”
at least you actually have made that homebrew chapter. i'm still a YEAR into deciding my chapter colors and schemes!
NMM is a daunting enough wall to scale that I've never dared it; more power to you for forging out into unknown territory
Dude, that looks absolutely fantastic!
Aw thanks bud
I love that chapter name! It reminds me of the gamer slang "griefer" which would make them an antagonistic bunch.
Absolutely love this video! It really shows the struggle and joy within this hobby! It's just so easy to quit rather than push through when things gets difficult.. ❤
The painting scheme about this primaris is just amazing ! congratulations and thanks for your channel. Long life to Rogue Hobbies !!!🤟😉
Your videos are what I like to watch when I paint my blood angels successor chapter.
Another gorgeous mini. Thank you for sharing 😊
Funny enough my chapter has purple bifurcation colors too. So am excited to see this video :)
You had me at painting a rainbow warrior, I'm going to check out more of your videos, this is a nice channel.
That looks awesome Louise! Nice job. I love the colour on those stones and the purple tint on the plinth works very well. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
We loved this video. We watched this during some Christmas Warhammer hobbying. My son thinks your Space Marines are the best.
I started watching Vince Venturella’s exploring colours series & found it very helpful. Im definitely with you on NMM the whole idea just puts me off, I guess this could be me New Year’s resolution, along with using oil washes too.
That is such a beautiful paint job on the plinth too. The space marking looks like he’s shouting “onwards and upwards, Louise!”
Alright im inspired! *cracks knuckles* time to tackle the things I hate most about painting miniatures!... the painting part
That being said…
This is seriously one of if not my favorite color schemes I’ve seen on a space marine.
Loved the colors it looks great you are giving me idee how to start my own marine squad with deferent colors thankyou for all the advice
He's definitely giving a rousing speech. Nice work it looks brilliant.

I love your painting style and you are far greater than you think. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I always liked the saying art is never finished only abandoned . Can relate :) wish I was half as good as you at mini painting :)
It also lends them a certain look that at the time I preferred to full blending & highlighting.
so, i have an idea for the lore of the chapter :) there we go:
The Emperor's Grief is officially a successor chapter of the Blood Angels.
For the background:
The guardians of a collection of systems in the galactic north, the Imperial Fists successor chapter The Emperor's Grief were the honourable knights and protectors of flourishing paradise worlds, keeping them safe from the horrors of the galaxy.
If Space Marines follow the same pattern then the Emperors Grief might be a chapter originally combined from the remains of two chapters (maybe they were nearly wiped out after fighting together with only a few left?)
And the white leg might be the remnant of a previous quartering (or 'dimidatment') in the past.
Your Marine might just be a veteran.
the advice about trees not being brown and rocks not being grey is really good, definitely gonna stick with me

Also, that Primaris came out brill, don't beat yourself up.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
@rougehobbies
I won't lie your becoming my favourite RUclipsr in general and you talk about a love of mine lol, I currently want more friends in the hobby/people to play with but have no idea how to/have bad anxiety about it lol
