The squats were never gone, because they're always in our hearts.

@@roguehobbies I'd love a history of the artists who drew for GW across it's various ages. I know it's not painting but it would still be really interesting. Also as someone who is not as artsy as you it would be cool if you could break down what made their styles unique and what sort of techniques they used. It would be intersting if you showed like evolution of some particularily famous pieces which have been redone throughout the years, like Horus and the Emperor, the panel of mutants with like eye stalks and weird mouths, or the famous xeno's picture from 3rd e showing minor xenos like Kroot and Hrud which would go on to become staple "background characters".
The real squats were always the friends we made along the way.
AAARRRGGGHHH GET THEM OUT
The removal of Squats aligns perfectly with 40k stripping away all satire.

I'd love to see a history of Citadel Paints, specifically when certain colors started, ended, or changed over time
This is a cool idea!
also when they started to purposely make flawed pots to reduce the shelf life of their paints. The newest pots reef even when still sealed (reefing is when the paint starts to evaporate and leaves a ring of dried paint at the top of the pot) They refuse to move with the times and start using dropper bottles, and this is the reason why. They want to make you have to buy more paints.
Boltgun metal, gone but never forgotten
@@D00M3R_MAVS never thought there was a term for that, thanks
@@charlottemayfieldclarke5421 I still have some.
Squat ships pumping Lisa Lougheed "Run with us" over their intercoms needs to be made canon.
In the nearly forgotten SL4M Sector there are tales of a mining league considered so radical that their ships are said to surf the waves of the warp. When their mining vessels break warp, the any who see them are bewildered by the sheer saturation of colors that face them. As synthesized musical technobabble comes over the voxhailers all know who approaches. The gnarliest, most radical, stoked and stacked short kings, Capt. Khyrk’s Slamma Jammas.
In the mid-late 90s when I worked at a GW store there was a definite move to eliminate the "fun and wacky" elements and focus more on the grimdark ahead of 3rd Edition. Even though we were still playing under 2nd Ed rules on store game nights, my coward of a manager had me tell one of our most enthusiastic community players that he could no longer bring his (perfectly legal) Squats & Guard to the table.
In addition, we were made to repaint many of the Ork models that our store had provided to a huge regional store display. We'd gone with the idea of Flash Gitz in 70s Disco style fashion, with zebraskin and leopard patterns, gold plated guns, all fitting in with the style of flashy Ork mercs for a bit of fun. The other stores loved them, but it came down the line that there was to be no "joke" characters in 40k displays, and to "save the fun for GorkaMorka."
That's fairly sad
And look where GorkaMorka is now...at least we have Modulorka which to me is superior
oh man ... I knew the fun had dissappeared from 40k when I got back into 40k with 8th edition and the Ork codex was about green aliens with guns.
Gone was the wacky nature of their faction. It made me sad.
To hear that GW even told stores to eliminate the wackyness somehow makes me even more sad.
'ere we go' and the two 'realm of chaos' books remain the best 40k content that GW has ever produced.
The guy at my local 40k store was willing to put my judge dredd arbiter in the display
One of my favorite opponents (Jim Murphy) was the epitome of "fun/silliness" that would certainly rub and GW store manager the wrong way. Bloodbowl Wood Elves named after the Green Bay Packers with his almost untouchable blitzer Branch Farve? Yep. His Gorkamorka mob called "The Orkula Corp" with vehicles painted in desert camouflage pattern with the palm tree insignia in white paint (sans the swastika)? Yep.
Great guy that certainly wasn't a power/competitive gamer but a real pleasure to face off from the other side of the table.
Louis always brings a level of fun a positivity to her videos that isn’t really seen elsewhere in the community.
The freehand on that board is absolutely amazing!!!
LOV being released made me come back to the hobby after 20 years
Hearing Lisa Lougheed's - Run With Us from the Raccoons was a drop-pod to the nostalgia zone.
I like how many of the rogue trader era squats had actual gun names in their character names, kinda campy
The concise answer is all of them. Even the ones made by Iron Claw. Hey that's a good video idea...
I really enjoy these kinds of videos! As a 90s kid I have strong memories of when the Tau were introduced and how they went from the "let's be nice to everyone" faction to the "let's do a sneaky genocide" faction so smoothly, so would be awesome to see a video on that!
Funny how that first, forgotten mini ended up influencing the eventual final design decades later more than the peak era models.
It would be great to see something about the weird history of the tyranids, particularly _Zoats_
are there any humaniod tyrranids?
@@jmgonzales7701 I mean, technically speaking Genestealer hybrids would qualify...
@@StephenGraves oh so mixed race only
Your content is awesome and a veteran who is mentally…. damaged due to experiences in life… I love watching you and your enthusiasm about the hobby. I find art and the hobby an escape from reality and you make it better
Massive props for using the end theme from the Raccoons as the theme for Killer Eggs on Trikes.
If I remember correctly, GW took 2nd edition Epic off the shelves in about 1997. About 18 months later they relaunched it as Epic 40,000, but the Squats were not included. So while Epic lasted until around 2007, I don't think the Epic Squats made it out of the 90s.
I think that the basic problem with Squats is that GW kept giving away their key traits to other factions. For example they turned Orks from obnoxious brutes into wacky crazies, taking away the original Squat trait. Then after they turned Squats into fantasy Dwarves in Space they ended up giving it away again, by turning Space Wolves into fantasy Dwarves in Space. That way they creatively ran the faction into ground.
I absolutely love the idea of the original Squats. I have many, MANY of the old metal models and have made homebrew codexes for every edition since 6th Edition that my friends allowed me to mess with in our games up until the release of the Leagues of Votann.
I love the Votann as well, but there will always be a spot in my heart that is left wanting for an update of the old Squats as an army in 40k, and not just a Necromunda gang (although I own a ton of them as well, LOL, and approve of their presence in the game).
Loved the edit " approximately 10hrs later". That made me giggle. Have a good weekend all in this community
A history of Nurglings would be awesome! The only cuter and chunkier minis than the squats
80s child here. It’s taken almost 40 years to find out what I wanted back then but at least now I know it was Killer Eggs on Bikes. Also the Epic Gyrocopters were ripped off Hunter-Killers from the original Terminator movie (‘84). Love your vids L Sugs. Stay Classy
Would absolutely love a video like this about the Necrons. The early Necron minis are delightful.
Your content is like someone bottled sunshine and fed it into youtube. You are an absolute delight ❤
Dude, I agree. She is just so positive and fun to watch. And I mean, who doesn't like a chick that is into 40k? 💗👍
Me: be super worried and disappointed about 10th edition and how both my armies got absolutely ripped over the coals.
Louise: hey want to laugh at some funny little dwarf guys?
Me: yes, yes I do.
You are the only person on earth who could release a 20+ minutes video about the history of some minis and crush it. Super fun and enjoyable view, congrats!
The Raccoons theme was a massive and unexpected hit of nostalgia
Gimme that good deep skaven lore. Would love your investigation skills to reveal more about the sculpt history. I've picked up some very old ones and love the buggers
The insider view of GW is my favorite thing about this channel, and something no other hobby channel does. Keep up the great work!
the painting phase.....
Great video as usual. I have a tremendous amount of nostalgic affection for the original WH40K Rogue Trader book. I bought it in the summer of summer of 1988 when I found it in a second hand bookshop (I'm old AF) and to this day still dive into it from time to time. But must admit, I don't have much love for the old metal minis. Even back then I though they were mostly just ugly blobs, and only bought them as they were needed to play the actual game. What I do love is the enthusiasm and passion Louise brings to this channel. The joy simply leaps off the screen, and never fails to make me smile. Not to mention the fantastic skills as an artist on display. I do find it very interesting that younger people have a lot of interest and affection for the old metal models. Good to know miserable old gits like me haven't put them off 😄
More old school 40k book content! That Rogue Trader copy you have looks mint
19:49 That turntable full of Bob Olley Squats look amazing. The paint scheme is super cool.
Thank you they're my favourite :)
@@roguehobbies To my shame, I wasn't a fan of Bob's style back when I could have picked up the entire Iron Claw range from my semi-friendly local GW. These days, I love his baroque aesthetic.
A history of Squigs in Warhammer: i'd love to see that - a look at the model range and a wee look at just how they came about.
Just FYI Louise -- the mystery of the Squats disappearance was actually solved 5 years earlier than Jervis' 2004 online piece, he revealed the reasons in The Citadel Journal #33 (c. August 1999) in which he explained they couldn't make them interesting. He also said that when they do return in the future they wouldn't be called squats! Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it :)
Just that all of the rogue Trauer material was written by Bryan, Nigel and Graeme Davis. Jervis, Rick, Andy and Co. didn't had to do anything with it amd never wrote anything new for them; so you could also see it as the fluff wasn't bad, it just wasn't theirs...
Your artstyle for painting minis is so damn cool! Has such a retro-shooter sprite vibe and the colours pop like crazy
I love the fact that your love of painting models while using all the colours in the rainbow is not limited to the Rainbow Warriors! These Squats look incredible, especially with your smashing paintjobs! As for suggestions, I'd love a video on old-school Eldar, specifically the first Harlequins. If there's anyone who can do those classic models justice, it's you :)
Would love to see something on the licenced ranges GW did, especially the Judge Dredd minis.
Ohhh I'd love to see a video where you randomly generate a couple of characters from the Realm of Chaos box, then kitbash/convert and paint them!
Love the Summoning band brooch❤
Is that a… Bolt Thrower pin?! 😮 Fantastic vid btw!
It's nice change to see 40k bright & colorful
The WH community needs more creators like you, keep it up
I started 40k in 1988 11 years old. Thanks for reminding me I'm old in game terms. 😭
Hooray for more Louise content. Makes for a great end of the week!
I love the sassy nurgling. He's literally my favorite GW miniature.
That's a very nice Space Dwindle.
Loool
I love learning about the history of 'OldHammer', not just the lore but what was going on in the game, books, and business to. Thanks for another great video!
Irn Bonce looks quite a bit like the Squat Prospecters from Necromunda in my opinion. I had not realised that callback before!
When watching a RUclips video by someone you've never seen before, you hope to find one of THOSE moments ... an instant when the RUclipsr seems to reach out through the screen and touch your heart.
11:44 was one such moment.
Loved it!
For perhaps an even shorter (geddit?) delve into a beloved range of extra-mini Warhammer minis, maybe consider Halflings. You could delve into the old Fantasy Halflings and the various iterations of 40k Ratlings, which are all brimming with character.
After all, who doesn't love a good legally distinct Not-Hobbit?
Would love to see you cover the story of Warhammer Records and their music, while painting something you love.
I honestly love each and every one of your videos, the energy is so amazing and you seem so passionate about warhammer!
Thank you
So I got a bundle of old Warhammer minis from a friend back when I was a kid, back in the early internet days. I still remember taking them into my local GW and the staff being so wonderfully happy when they told me they were squats.
I heard you mention the 90's prices...LOL! We used to complain they were too expensive. GW was like $2.25/mini vs the average of $1.75/mini for Ral Partha and Grenadier.
This is now my favourite video of all time, just love weird bits of info like this, and also classic skateboard graphics, so double win, thank you :D
Much prefer miniature history to (for some reason incredibly popular) lore videos. Thanks for this
The effort in the animation, lore dive…chefs kiss
Loving these deep dives into the old info about the early days of GW. Can we get a history of the Crimson Fists, like you did for the Rainbow Warriors? Feel like they hold a really cool and special place in the history of the company, as the OG posterboys for Space Marines. And lots of incredible artwork!
Thanks for doing these 40k history videos, it’s so cool learning about how it came to be. I’ve always loved the artwork; I’m such a huge fan of the Black Templars castellan and I’m so happy they turned into a model. I wish there were more power axes! Maybe it would be cool to do a video regarding the history of some of the old artwork? And maybe also paint that mini because it’s awesome? Also your videos are great!
Loved this, but was surprised you didn't mention the 36 fig plastic boxed set that was available for Space Dwarfs as well. Your enthusiasm in these videos is infectious. I'd love to see you do a retrospective on some of the crazy ork stuff from Rogue Trader like Mad boyz
Love the lore and the tutorial! Your painting style inspired my Goff Rockah!
I want to learn more about ‘eavy metal painting and the history of it
This surfboard is dope af.
I'll listen to anything you talk about because it's always so much fun to hear you expound on most anything, really. You're so animated and delightful to listen to, you always are worth making time for! That and your smile and wave at the end of every video is just plain adorable. :) *stans* I'll be using this video as inspiration for painting in brighter and more saturated colors, further...
These are quickly becoming my favorite videos on RUclips - keep up the weird history deep dives!
These obscure 40k topics are fascinating. Keep them coming!!
Your enthusiasm is infectious!
I love this video! Great worked, subbed!
Loving the lore and painting stuff!
There are a lot of lore-explaining channels (“history IN 40k”) but I loved this “history OF 40k”. I think it’s really neat to see when lore/models were added! Also your rainbow transitions are part of what pushed me to actually start painting so thanks a lot for your vids!
Lore + painting, perfect format for me! 😎👌
Another great episode as always!
This was fantastic, loved the background information and excited for the next one.
Awesome work, Fun to watch and I learnt something. Thank you.
Loved everything about this video 🙌
That was a fun and insightful video. I learned a ton! Thanks for all the great content, keep it up!
Thank you for making this video. Your enthusiasm and love of the squats really comes through and just makes the video amazing.
The killer eggs on bikes graphic with the TMNT style had me laughing hard 😂😂😂
Great video Louise, keep it up! Your enthusiasm is infectious
Such a fun video! Great editing!
I'm really glad that you started creating materials on YT. I've been playing Warhammer since the 90s, I've watched a lot of different content from many creators, but your videos are very enjoyable to watch. I hope you will continue to create on YT and keep this amazing positive energy :)
I got too hyped when I got the notification that you had a new video up, love your energy!
I absolutely love your synth wave color scheme! I think you perfectly captured the spirit of the minis. Your work is amazing. I look forward to seeing more of it
I really enjoy your videos, which are quite informative, fun and full of charisma! It does show how much you enjoy the hobby.
Thank you for making these documentary videos. It is fantastic to learn about the start and early history of warhammer. Keep up the good work.
love the palette and the mini came out amaaazing !
loving the paint
Absolutely love your videos and always look forward to the next one🙂
So much love for this video. Really enjoying the mix of Oldhammer/History and painting on the channel, and you can’t beat a video about Squats, the multipart plastic set is one of my earliest 40k memories.
Loving this old school style video! Its a unique angle not alot of warhammer youtubers are covering.
Just love your enthusiasm for all things Warhammer. You're the best.
I remember seeing Grendl Grendlsen at Golden Demon in 2019 (I think). To this day your paint scheme on him is still my favourite mini ever!
Such a fascinating deep dive into the history of such a fun faction. I've been in the hobby for decades and these were always in my peripheral vision but I never really looked at them much. I learned a ton from this vid. Thanks for such a well made and fascinating vid.
Well presented history and totally rad painting.
Favorite channel! Great start!!
Thanks so much :D
honestly i love already what you are doin with the channel because it's so different from others and uniquely you :D
Really enjoy all content from my favorite “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” (MPDG) creator!
Could you please please PLEASE cover the miniature ranges of other factions too??? I look up "history of warhammer" on here and all I ever get is lore videos. This vid is truly a breath of fresh air and exactly what I'm into
The Synthwave style you done is just *chef’s kiss* beautiful. Personally I like the more modern Votanni/Necromunda Squats. But what it boils down to is ultimately “For Rock and Stone!”
I love my Votann. Ive only realised now I've subconsciously modelled them in the dwarf rangers from WoW😅
Lovely as usual!
I was 14 when all the Rogue Trader stuff started trickling through - this was a great trip down memory lane. Home is where the Hearthworld is....
