Louise, you crushed it as an Rogue Hobbies first video ! It's the complete package: fun and quirky, lore packed, and an inspiring painting tutorial to boot ! Can't wait for the next one
The reason the Sister of Battle is shooting the warrior is because it is an allegory to the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior. The Sister has a Fleur de Lis, a traditional French Symbol, but she also has a goat's head as a pauldron insignia, as a reference to operation Satanique.
I have always liked the Rainbow Warrirors! For Pacfic Islanders, the rainbow is seen as a good omen. Warriors would often ride/sail into battle with the rainbow in the sky behind them. Thus "Rainbow Warriors"! So I have always thought of them as Islanders! Great video!
Hiya Louise! Really old person here, wanted to point out a reference you missed to the our lovely Aztec themed space bois. In the 6th edition codex (came out in 2012) that the Rainbow Warriors, Relictors, and Fire Lords Chapters all went out and fought a massive daemonic incursion in 748.M41 ... the costly battle saw all three Chapters lose their respective Chapter Masters before the daemons were driven back. So, they're still kicking around a few hundred years before the modern lore ...
Absolutely love the callbacks to Rogue Trader in the painting details; anyone who keeps the early history of this game alive in their hobby is a real treasure.
ok - couple of things: 1) I now want to create a Rainbow Warrior chaos marine - specifically so i can have a *Painbow* Warrior! 2) in all future videos, i hope to see ArmKnee become standard language, replacing elbow in it's entirety 3) You look like you're having fun. Happy new career! :)
As an Old Guy myself (I had a copy of WH40K Rogue Trader in my youth though I never figured out how to play), I'm a big fan of the Oldhammer mindset so naturally I'm drawn toward anyone making their own lore. But I also appreciate the dopamine ping one feels in their brain when you're able to use the existing details in official lore to work out a consistent history for a more obscure chapter. So I enjoyed your lore exploration and explanation easily as much as your amazing painting skills and decisions! The old school details like the checkered bands and the hand-made slogans! The battle damage! It's so much fun to watch you paint them and see how well they turn out. (As for the white skull aquila on the chestplate, I would guess it's to symbolize the white light which gets refracted by prisms into the rainbow bands on the head and legs.) I'm really looking forward to more of your videos!
Interesting Fact. Sugs got my 7 year old into Warhammer with me. He saw an Ork video of hers and it just clicked with him. Now he loves his Orks and paints then with me while I do my Warhammer stuff. It has become a thing where we will put on various things Sugs has done while we hobby together.
NGL, I've never had a chance to watch Louise's stuff before, but between the praise I've heard from so many others and that fantastic teaser video yesterday, I'm already super excited to see what she ends up doing with this channel.
Everyone who's been into 40k since the late 80s knows about the rainbow warriors. Shout out to Bolt Thrower for getting me into warhammer with realm of chaos slaves to darkness.
The symbols remind me of the 42nd & 45th Infantry Divisions from WW2 They were known respectively as the Rainbow Division and Thunderbirds with matching badges (a half arc rainbow and a thunderbird).
I love when you tubers get a little rambling in their videos cuz it feels like we actually see a part of the person making the video and it feels so authentic and I love it. Amazing first video, can't wait for many more!
My favourite Warhammer channel by a mile! Your enthusiasm is so contagious that your videos make me smile all the time. I saw your Sphiranx at Warhammer World without knowing you yet and it stood out as my favourite model of the whole building. Please keep this channel growing! You’re great!!
Armknee is now my favourite name for the body part formerly known as elbow. 😂 Great to see you striking out on here and taking the leap. Can’t wait to watch your channel grow and evolve.
As an oldie who started with Rogue Trader and have always wondered what might have happened to those fancy Rainbow Lads, I'm completely on board with this. Great work, Louise! Also: Space Wolves will always be grey (at least in my heart).
There was a picture of a space marine painted all white with black joints in Rogue Trader, but I can’t recall there being a chapter name listed. That was the one that inspired me.
Hi, nice video, thanks. The rainbow is an important symbol in Hawaiian folklore. In fact the university of Hawaii sports teams are called the rainbow warriors. Legend has it that Hawaiian warriors could not lose a battle if a rainbow appeared in the sky. The kahunas see the rainbow as a symbol of transformation and as a path between the heavens and earth. Anyway, good luck to you. Aloha
I'd like to share my own thoughts on the Rainbow Warriors, which comes mainly from near my entry into the 40k hobby in 1993. Back then i too was intrested in the cool colour scheme that i'd seen in the rogue trader book and was eagerly awaiting news of them in the soon to be released Second Edition (sadly nothing ever came), but the general thoughts from the players and the staff at my local GW store was that like most of the other chapters, the RW were inspired on an ancient earth culture, in this case The Aztecs (for the reasons Lousie stated in her video). It was theorised by many that the reason there was artwork showing a space nun (sister of battle not existing yet in name) was a reference to Cortez and christianity assaulting the south american natives. Basicly, the RW were relaxing on Prism, happily human sacrificing people to the Emperor, when the Ecclesiarchy came down on them like a tonne of bricks (presumably whiping them out as they were not featured in later media).
If your talking about the sister sin killing a rainbow warrior space marine two page spread, then it explains what sisters of Battle are and how their function
Any Rogue Trader related content is very much welcome and your dedication to the pursuit of any lore or mention of the chapter and their world is great. I also have to mention the fact your shelf contains the games Trolls in the Pantry and Oi! Dats my leg! Is outstanding. I'd forgotten thry even existed!
While I'm not super into Warhammer, Boltgun made me look into the lore of the world and the history of the hobby. Even though I'm not into the model side of 40K (not yet) your channel has a special quality that I haven't seen a YT channel exude in a while. Your passion and the joy this hobby brings you bleeds through the screen, and I hope you keep making videos for as long as possible.
I first was introduced to 40K via that old Rogue Trader rulebook. I *poured* over the art in that book trying to decide what color scheme I wanted for my marines. I kept falling upon the Rainbow Warriors but constantly scared myself away because I didn't think I could paint a tiny rainbow, much less dozens of them. You absolutely make it look easy and best of all, totally stellar! I'm excited to see where you go from here!!
Honestly, signed up for WH+ for YOUR painting videos (plus some of the other stuff) but once I realized that you weren't there for all of them, I was immediately bummed out because you're a fantastic painter. Excited to see what you put out on your channel! Cheers!
Great content. To add to your lore I remember hearing an audio book of a bunch of deathwatch marines chatting to each other and one asking another about his og chapter and he refused to comment on the subject and the space wolf laughs and mentions rainbow warriors then a dark angel walks in and he starts taking the piss out of him saying that they chase each other round their ship naked and whipping each other with towels or something it was a strange chapter.
When I saw "Oi Dats My Leg" and "Trolls in the Pantry" I had to hit subscribe. Love the stuff on Rainbow Warriors, I painted up a squad in those colours after I cracked open my copy of Rogue Trader way back in the late 80s. They have been overlooked for too long!
In this case the record of PRISM was deleted because brother Jermimiah spilled his coffee on the keyboard that day and corrupted the backups. The record of that was also deleted.
This video is fantastic! I seriously don't understand why GW wouldn't want a video like this under their channel. Its got cool lore and fantastic painting instruction. Its a shame Louise didn't have the freedom to do this under GW but super happy to see her free on RUclips now
That Brother Vermillion/Sister Sin art from Rogue Trader has always been one of my favorites. I do love how 40K lore is a masterclass on unreliable narrators & mysteries hanging out in the margins. So many tantalizing plot threads for a fan to grab onto & weave their own story into the greater narrative. Love the power sword. Excellent work.
The Rainbow Warriors' symbol was also featured in the command center room in Space Crusade, which was my first clue that other chapters existed besides the Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Imperial Fists. For 10 year old me - back in 1990 - that was a big revelation! 🤩 BTW, Lou, your Mindstealer conversion is bloody brilliant. 😎
you are such a joy to watch, i love your little giggles when you really get into your creations, and i love your painting! Your crack lore dump was amazing i love how your mind works!!
Absolutely brilliant, and welcome to the next chapter in the Book of Louise! My own headcanon for the Rainbow Warriors is they're made up of Loyalist (or repentant) Marines from otherwise Heretic Legions or rogue warbands and the rainbow colour scheme is made of of the armour colours of the original legions when it was first founded and "officially" made an Ultramarine successor chapter.
I like the format of this video, in that it's mostly lore being told, with painting methods peppered in visually over the top of it. It works really well, and stands out from the rest of the typical painting tutorial videos. Looking forwards to seeing more vids in the future ❤
“Arm Knees.” A bullet point that’s say “ Don’t leave me.” Hahaha, I love this! It’s awesome to see you making content! I love the prismatic power sword. It is so pretty, and your Rainbow Warriors are always so rad! I look forward to more content from you!
hahahah Arm Knees is right up there with the time I was trying to tell my mate to meet me down at the athletic fields but the word that came out for them was to meet me down at the "Sporting Glen" loved the video, between the lore, the crack lore and painting all jammed in!
This was siiiiiiick! I am so hyped that you've opted to start this project/channel, and kicking it off with a deep dive into the Rainbow lads in the murky-yet-prismatic origins of Warhammer 40k? Inspired. And has definitely inspired me to give one a go.
I imagine prism is a planet of light. Crystalline structures and mountains that are like glass. Light reflecting off their sun sending off rainbow colors in every direction and the moonlight bathing the land in oil slick shadows. It seems like a world ABSOLUTELY touched by Tzeench, even in a more passive way; and the reason their power weapon and plasma have their distinctive color is perhaps they utilize these crystals in their weapons, rather than smithing from adamantine and plasti-steel and instead used carved crystals that supercharge reflected light and hum with power in spear point and blade. Love the color scheme and happy to see more!
Never heard of rainbow warriors before, but love the lore and your ideas on what their history/future is... also seriously wish I could paint like you. So creative & just love how you work everything out x
Classic old-school GW political commentary, having a picture of a Rainbow Warriors marine being shot by a SoB, replete with French-inspired fleur-de-lys iconography
This enthusiasm is so contagious I now want to paint one! And yeah, being of the older group of players (2nd. ed) my favourite bits of lore are those little snippets that don't really form complete stories, just world shaping fragments. The contagion of Ganymede, the tech-adept that finds "all systems stable... at zero" and then disappears, and so on. Love this theory now - these guys being "evolved" Thousand Sons after fleeing all the mess from the Horus Heresy.
@@isophistchambers6694 ya I think it's a double entendre, I think it means fun/kinda weird/wack lore. craic can kinda mean what ever you want it to mean haha
fantastic video. please keep your content fun, positive and hobby focused. this community needs more people like you, that visably love what they do. thank you.
Taste the Rainbow Great vid and wonderful paint job! I remember these guys from ages ago when I first started the "hobby". Being an Ultrasmurf fanboy this was indeed a treat for me. That sword is an absolute beauty and steals the show imo. Not a fan of the classic goblin green basing, but to each their own :)
I've never watched your stuff from previous place and I'm a new follower. You've blasted off the starting grid with the perfectly timed turbo boost and you've smashed it with your first episode, their loss and our gain, Keep doing what you've started.
Rainbow Warriors "heretical"chapter tactic : looking amazing to subjugate their enemies... Too cool to be shot at ! Can't wait to ear your stories about your other miniatures ! (Please tell us more about your Orks !)
I love the way you've done that sword! It looks incredible. As for lore, maybe the Rainbow Warriors were set up? Just because that one Rogue Trader image has one getting shot by a Sister of Battle, does she have to be working towards the Imperium's best interests? She is called Sister Sin, after all. Maybe she's working with the Runious Powers on a plot to remove an inconvenient loyalist chapter? Or maybe the Rainbow Warriors followed in the example of one of the things which inspired them, Greenpeace, and turned against the Imperium for ideological, but non-Chaos related, reasons? Idk, I just really like imagining people in the Grimderp 40k universe doing things that are very much not ̶c̶a̶s̶h̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ Imperium approved, but which fall outside the usual reasons people get chased out of the Imperium with boltgun rounds (xenos-fraternising, mutant-tolerating, wytch-harbouring); things like being radically socialist, or just refusing to lick the boots of an obviously corrupt and ineffectual fascist state.
Oh my God Trolls in the Pantry! I had that as a kid! That and original Heroquest were my first things in the miniatures/gaming hobby. Ace video, love your Rainbow Warriors.
Hi Louise, I saw the latest video by default and looked now this one as you said that you're not so happy with the results of your first video and actually I like it because the background was perfect for the video in my eyes. As specially the colors in the background dives me further in your these about the Rainbow Warriors. So even if this isn't your favourite video anymore I personally still like the atmosthere in that short video.
Have you seen the fan-reinterpretation that basically makes the Rainbow Warriors into Mezoamerican Aztec warriors? With plumes and obsidian swords. It's badass.
2:36 Okay I hate to simplify things here but if you look at the symbol of the Sisters of Battle, the fleur-de-lis. The fleur-de-lis is heavily used by the French. The green peace ship was bombed by the French.
I’ve always wanted to learn more about them. Most of what I’ve seen has been mostly from the old rogue trader book. I think it’s great you are painting them, and are doing them. Keep it up, it’s fantastic, and I look forward to all that you do, and share about them! Also, congrats on leaving GW, and I hope all the goodness to you with your channel and such!
So in the Rogue Trader the Rainbowwarrior (Greenpeace) is shot down by a Sister of Battle who weares a Fleur de Lis (a symbol of French royal might) Not very mysterious at all. Satire all the way. Good luck with the channel!
Te hei mauri ora! I'm embarrassed to say I never got the full implications of that piece of artwork until you pointed it out to me just now. And I'm a New Zealander for whom both Rogue Trader and the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior are within living memory. That does fully encapsulate the political satire that permeated early 40K as you say. All we need now is a further piece of art with some senior members of the Sisters being arrested by the standard Arbites of an outer world planet.
Love the clocktower sounds from Majora's mask Dawn scene for Chapter one. Another person of culture I see. Also I love your more goofy energy in these videos.
This is absolutely fantastic! Seriously, a real pleasure to watch this, I can't wait to see everything else you're going to do now! Like, a million little nurglings out of ten
absolutely loved your warhammer painting videos because I got to learn a lot of cool techniques to add to my painting but this... this is on an entirely new level of cool!
never heard of the rainbow warriors before, but I love what you did with their style. welcome to youtube! wishing you a good start and lots of good times on the ol' platform :)

First video?? Holy shit, I would have never thought that and had to have a look at the channel, but you're right. Respect!

@@isophistchambers6694 ya I think it's a double entendre, I think it means fun/kinda weird/wack lore. craic can kinda mean what ever you want it to mean haha
I suspect this will quite quickly become one of my top subs. Top work!
Congrats on your new endeavour! 🎉
Also, wow I love how you did the sword 😍
fantastic video. please keep your content fun, positive and hobby focused. this community needs more people like you, that visably love what they do. thank you.
So excited to see where this journey takes you. Thanks for taking the chance - the leap of faith! The world has your back.
The goblin green base is really a perfect touch for this miniature. It also hits nice nostalgic notes too!
Taste the Rainbow
Great vid and wonderful paint job!
First time seeing you and your art. Phenomenal work! Your painting is so clean and inspired.
Really liked the Deepdive and your Presentation of it. The Energy rocks!
Excited to see what you bring next.
Rainbow Warriors "heretical"chapter tactic : looking amazing to subjugate their enemies... Too cool to be shot at !
Can't wait to ear your stories about your other miniatures ! (Please tell us more about your Orks !)
Love you Louise, ever since I saw you on Blackstone Fortress playthru with Becca Scott! So happy to randomly have this video pop up on my feed!
Happy Easter everyone and congrats Louise! This is going to be great!!!!
This was amazing! I loved the mix of lore and painting. Your style has so much personality and I can't wait to binge watch the rest of your content! 🦖
I've seen a lot of fanart and kitbash's depicting the Rainbow Warriors with a strong Aztec aesthetic and I honestly dig it.
The humor and editing here are top notch! Can't wait to see more!
You are my absolute favorite hobbie-human and I'm so glad to see you doing your own channel now. I'd watch your content 24/7
Have you seen the fan-reinterpretation that basically makes the Rainbow Warriors into Mezoamerican Aztec warriors? With plumes and obsidian swords. It's badass.
Rainbow= Rainbow Feathered Serpent, Queztlcoutl? I like that!
@@Zaprozhan yup!
That sounds badass. And it nice to see some non Greek Roman based marines.
Not going to lie, I love the geeking out about a super niche part of a super niche hobby. Keep it up!
🎉 Very awesome 🎉 Thank you! 🎉 I have always appreciated the Successor Chapters of the Ultramarines the art, lore, and the differences found.
2:36 Okay I hate to simplify things here but if you look at the symbol of the Sisters of Battle, the fleur-de-lis. The fleur-de-lis is heavily used by the French. The green peace ship was bombed by the French.
What a great introduction to a mysterious chapter ! Loved the storytelling and that paintjob was the perfect illustration, subscribed !
So in the Rogue Trader the Rainbowwarrior (Greenpeace) is shot down by a Sister of Battle who weares a Fleur de Lis (a symbol of French royal might)
Not very mysterious at all.
Satire all the way.
Good luck with the channel!
Was going to comment on this myself, as the Sisters did not yet exist in Rogue Trader.
They did, they just were limited to two sentences of lore and that picture.
^this^
RT era GW was very politically aware and this is 100% calling out the actions of the French government sinking the Rainbow Warrior
“Armknee” cracked me up 😂 Well done Louise, looking forward to seeing more videos!
Never heard of those crystalline power weapons. They look really cool.
Nice to see the Rainbow Warriors getting some love once again. That's some Rogue Trader-esq $*!* & I'm here for it!
It's fantastic to see Louise be able to do her own thing! She is a brilliant artist and a very cool person. Excited to see more :)
You're the hero we needed with that goblin green base. Love that sword as well.
Love learning more about 40k. Could you do more dives into forgotten or overlooked chapters/elements of 40k?
Rainbow warriors are awesome. Love the armknees and leg elbow pads with the red stop sign
I don’t normally say this but SLAY QUEEN
absolutely loved your warhammer painting videos because I got to learn a lot of cool techniques to add to my painting
but this... this is on an entirely new level of cool!
never heard of the rainbow warriors before, but I love what you did with their style. welcome to youtube! wishing you a good start and lots of good times on the ol' platform :)
Thank you so much!!
Loved it. I was painting as I had it on, and you were really great to listen to. Was nice to hear someone thoroughly enjoying it but not being even close to taking it all too seriously!
