    The fact that David hesitated to help the First Officer is what truly makes him a hero for me. Many good samaritans will say they just had the instinct to help and did not think of the risks at the moment. This guy KNEW HE WAS RISKING HIS LIFE. He felt the fear, saw his own life on the balance, had no crowd cheering him on or pressuring him to help, and still chose the noble path. That's real bravery.

      That mistake may have actually saved some lives. The crash happened pretty far out from Atlanta in a more rural/suburban mixed area. So the Fire Services are pretty widely spread out. If he had made the call it would have positioned all of the Fire and Rescue Units at the small local airport. But the plane didn’t come down there. Where it came down the first 1-2 units were responding from their stations, which were much closer to the crash site than the airport. So the first due units had a shorter response time. While subsequent units were responding in from further distances. The real problem was and always was going to be, Water Supply. Normal regular city fire trucks carry 1500 gallons of water each, and at best just enough foam to put out a bad car fire. So each truck had about a 2 minute water supply, and even less foam, until the next in units can find the nearest hydrant and lay in the supply lines. The big airport trucks with lots of foam were fifty miles away at Atlanta Hartsfield airport. And they need a steep downgrade to hit 40 mph.

      As a mechanical engineering student, what I find completely unconscionable is using 1940's manufacturing methods and chlorine to assemble the engine blade balance weight assembly, especially as no changes were instituted after two severe accidents involving sudden catastrophic failure of propellers involving chlorine corrosion that, if you're versed in the internal structure of the blades the origin of which is self-evident. A aerospace manufacturer such as Hamilton Standard has highly trained metallurgy and material science experts both on staff and easily accessible through engineering science faculties of major universities and through sub-contract consultant basis with the snap of their fingers, and in the early 1990's innumerable number of various plastic composites and high-durability corrosion resistant metal alloys were not only commonly known in the industry, but easily available at near trivial cost. Most plastic composites being often cheaper than chlorine dipped cork especially due to economy of masses. And since you have to go through a rigorous certification and licensing process, to make anything for an aircraft; there really is no excuse for not bothering. The documentary doesn't go into it, but that NTSB ruling and FAA report which condemns Hamilton Standards manufacturing and maintenance practices, should've lead to criminal charges for whoever was responsible for this calamity and outright criminal negligence, both in management and engineering departments of the company. As I am new to the field, I'm not yet induced to various metal corrosion scenarios and the chemistry involved, but it could not have been a new discovery that chlorine erodes high-carbon steel. And since, as you well know, this is a blade subjected to extreme vibration, temperature and impulse forces in standard operation and as per airplane safety regulations of even the era need to be rated to take even higher levels of stress (Bird strikes, etc.); When the blades were originally being developed for this aircraft, significant R&D resources should have been devoted to looking for a non-corrosive adulterant for the balance weight cork. Or, better yet, replacing them with plastic composite versions that mechanically expand and self-seal once installed, instead of depending on chlorinated corks. These kinds of issues were, literally, why the Apollo space program lead to the advent of Nylon, Teflon and Kevlar and derivatives there in by Dupont. And knowledge of them and their appropriate use and benefit in such an application had to have been common knowledge to any engineer working in aerospace research and development when those planes were in the prototype stage. The rest of what I have to say won't pass filters, so I'll leave it out. But I hope some one was brought to justice for this, since propeller blades snapping off from passenger aircraft due to chlorine corrosion because of ridiculously outdated manufacturing methods are completely avoidable and unnecessary incidents. That is not to say, something like this could not happen at all, due to some other causal chain, or that pilots training for the unimaginable aren't needed. But, seriously. Someone who was paid not to drop it, dropped the ball on this thing. And then neglected to inform those whose lives depended upon him to hold it, about it. And that's just unacceptable.

    Wow. I’ve watched episodes where hundreds died so this death toll is much smaller in comparison. However, this episode focused so much on the traumatized witnesses and first responders. Their pain was so visceral through the screen that I could not help but cry with them.
    It reminded me of when I was a child and involved in a drunk driving accident (the other driver was intoxicated). I was 8 or 9 years old, just regained consciousness and was temporarily blinded from a head injury. I remember a woman, a pedestrian witness, had held me while I cried and comforted me because I did not know where my dad was. I never got to see her face or know her name but I remember how soothing her voice was and how soft and comfortable she felt. After I was taken in an ambulance she was gone. I hope she knows what great kindness she did for me that day. Thankfully no one died. I was the most severely injured and was able to go home that night.
    It never fails to amaze me how much compassion we can feel for total strangers in suffering. It was touching and sad to see how emotionally affected all these responders, both professional and those there by chance, were by this accident

      Its part of the job. The thing is, there are strict instructions and procedures for inspections and repair of aircraft components. The other thing is after the first one or two propeller failures, there should have been a life limit placed on those components that take the propellers out of service at an interval well before the metal fatigue could cause catastrophic failure like this. But unless that happens, maintenance has their hands tied

    • @jmflyer55
      @jmflyer55 5 месяцев назад

      It’s not that “mechanics are so willing to take accountability for their actions”, than it’s that everything an aircraft mechanic does, is logged and signed off by that mechanic. They’re responsible for their work. At the time, they were considering prosecuting this mechanic criminally. It’s not that they so willingly take responsibility, but when the FAA & NTSB investigators come knocking on their door with all the documentation showing they alone are the person who did the work on the failed part, they don’t really have any other option than to say “Yes, I worked on that aircraft last and certified it in good condition”. Most will then start showing signs of remorse, whether it’s genuine remorse or not, only they know. It’s not like they come forward and say “Hey guys, I’m the mechanic that last worked on that failed propellor”….

      The air traffic controller who FORGOT to call emergency services to come for an EMERGENCY was extremely derelict in his duties. It the fire department had already been on alert & following the trajectory of the plane, then they could have put out the fire and/or helped evacuate people. It certainly wouldn't have grown into the conflagration it became if trained firefighters were there to control the fire sooner.

But I'm super paranoid and would have preferred to sit by the emergency exit from the start, in fact I'd prefer to never fly again. Not that I'm terrified of planes or don't know the statistics, it's just that if something goes wrong there's so little I could really do about it. If I was on a ship, at least I know I can swim (okay, float.) very well. But I sadly cannot fly, and you don't generally get a chance to "abandon plane" and survive until it's on the ground.

    This is an excellent recreation of the flight & crash. Not overly dramatic, factual & I was glad to hear from some survivors. You can tell how a tragedy like this affects people years later. The farmer will never be able to forget what he saw, smelled & the feeling of helplessness that he couldn’t do more. I pray they all continue healing & obtain peace.

    It's so important to give Captain Ed Gallaway credit. They all survived upon landing bc of his skills. That's incredible, given how crippled the plane was. And flight attendant Robin was a hero as well; I'm so sorry that it had to kill her career, but I understand completely. And others really stepped forward, the passenger who risked his life and helped keep the FO alive until rescue service came. The doctor and the local farmer, who clearly did everything they could and appreciated the gravity of the situation. Really touching event, despite the heartbreak.

There are so many heroes in this story, it's wonderful to see so many people helping in such a horrific situation. They would have had to ignore so many instincts and cope with sights and smells no one should ever be exposed to.

    This episode debuted in 2005 and I remember watching it around the time it originally aired. 17 years later I have remembered this incident pretty vividly. Ive seen dozens of the Mayday and Air disaster series, this is one of the most chilling to me. The pilots fighting for control, the horror of enduring the initial impact, the element of fire and being trapped makes this much more surreal to me. Also, having survivors to paint the picture of shear terror in the air and on the ground makes it even more haunting. I have had to fly on many small, regional jets in my life and have always been uneasy during the flight. The age of the smaller planes and significantly increased rattles, squeaks and vibrations over the larger planes leads me to believe they truly are not as safe all things equal. This accident here is just one more reason to support that theory.

    The flight attendant deserves recognition here. Here's the wikipedia section on here:
    "Many surviving passengers credited Robin Fech, the flight attendant, with saving their lives. Tanner Medical Center treated Fech's broken wrist and other lacerations before releasing her. The Georgia State Senate passed a resolution honoring Fech.[14] The NTSB accident report commended "the exemplary manner in which the flight attendant briefed the passengers and handled the emergency." However, passenger Dawn Dumm (who was also the daughter of the passenger who died of a heart attack following the crash) initially criticized Fech; she cried futilely out to Fech, who was with other passengers in the hayfield, to help her and her mother. Later, she reasoned that Fech could not hear her screams and/or did not see her through the thick smoke. In addition, Fech was proven to have been assisting passengers at that moment. Fech stated that Dumm's criticism upset her. Fech never worked as a flight attendant again after the ASA 529 disaster."

    I was on a passenger jet exactly 12 days before 9/11 and have sworn never to fly again and it has been 20 years now since I last ever flew. These stories haven't deepened my fear of flying, nor has it lessened it. But they are most interesting. Many I had never known about. My stance on flying wont ever change but I do have great respect for those who brave the skies and go above and beyond the call of duty when problems occur, even if efforts may seem futile, it is still amazing bravery.

      It sounds like you've already decided to not fly. One important aspect of any plane crash like this is what we learn from it and change. 9/11 didn't happen because of mechanical or pilot failure. It happened because of security breaches that would be forever improved as a result. The requirements just to board a plane today are much better than before. This sometimes means long lines getting through security, but it also means the chances of this happening again are greatly reduced. I couldn't feel safer anywhere than on a modern passenger jet.
