i have an old bootleg tape of a concert in Cleveland from the Darkness era where Bruce sings an alternative lyric. "I work all day pushing for the man" is one line I think. I will have to dig it out although the only place i could listen to it these days is the tape player in an old car i've still got
I think Springsteen or Smith changed some of the lyrics when he gave the song to her originally. A lot of Springsteen's performances of "Because The Night" in the late 70's use slightly alter or arguably the "original" lyrics, like the one you mentioned. I’ve had a tape of that Cleveland show I recorded off the radio in September 1978 when it was rebroadcast on a local station. Springsteen released an official version of the show a few years ago. One of my all-time favorite recordings.
@@gizmophoto3577 yep it was a radio broadcast so decent quality . i have not listened to it for a while but it had some great Roy Bittan piano intros ans quite a lot of chat from Bruce between songs. Can't remember now where I got a copy as would have been recorded a couple of years before I had even heard of Bruce (tbf i was only 11 yrs old)

So Iovine called up Springsteen and asked if he was going to use or include "Because the Night" in his album, and he said no so Iovine asked if he could have it and Springsteen agreed. Iovine then gives a cassette with the incomplete song to Patti and urged her to listen to it, and continued to do so day after day until one night she listened to it while waiting for her then boyfriend (future husband) Fred Smith to call her, and while waiting she completed the song. Or so it went in the HBO doc "The Defiant Ones".
