I was a wierd teenager when Radio Ethiopia came out and it saved my life. I was probably the only person in Dallas Texas who listened to it. Still listening to it today.
One cool thing about Patti Smith is that besides being a great mind she seems to live by her words. She seems to be a great mom! Her sons seem balanced and happy people. She seems to be winning this game of life thing!
Wow have you seen a front woman reign over a group of men like this before? just captivated or silenced, EVER? Even once? I haven't. (And not in a library or auditorium etc)
Dang gurl, you're a force of nature. I am so glad Patti Smith is finally getting her due & being seen as a real originator of punk & everything that came after. It's a wonder to see the artist herself age while those early albums when you put them on still feel like they were just born yesterday. Patti Smith is a magical fearless monumental talent.
Not so sure about "Mohammed's 7 heavens" though. Going to our nearest satellite the Moon actually *was* a big deal. Having no fear would shorten one's life considerably. Great line ofcourse "only thing to fear is fear itself".....Lots of unavoidable babble in streams of consciousness . Doesn't antimatter , she's great .
I have become obsessed with her. She is an icon, its so liberating to hear her strength, like a Lioness, fierce and kind, brave and thoughtful, deep and active. She is a perfect contradiction , an addition to our visions. Lighting touches our hearts.
I love it that Patti causes so much controversy. At this stage of her career, and really throughout her life, she was constructed to drive authoritarians crazy. You find their almost incoherent comments over and over in this discussion. They fear her dissatisfaction with rigid ideology and all political systems that want to oppress their citizens Her secret, of course, which only comes out once or twice in this edgy interview, is that underneath she is such a sweetheart. Her best songs, like "People Have the Power", are idealistic, and she is always talking, even here, about God and religion. Even when struggling to break the chains of religious dogma ("Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine"), she is still thinking about God. Did she sometimes go too far? Of course. But if she hadn't, she wouldn't have been such a powerful artist.
I just love Patti, she's so real and full of art! Luckily there was an ad in the back of Rolling Stone where you could send in her books of poetry and she'd send it back autographed! It was done before her mom had died. And I sent all of my books to her mom in NY and also what came back wsd a great 8x10 photo of Patti sitting on the couch autographed, too! Its on my wall with Sinéad in her priest uniform via Vanity Faire.
She was the most amazing woman and she is still. She is the greatest woman of both 20th and 21st century. This is a real beauty. The most beautiful woman in the whole fuckin' world. Damn I'm so in love with her..
The guy sitting behind her is there to "spot" her with his hand on her back in case she might fall... also helping her with her jacket. She is so awesome!!!
Fantastic Poet .... even back then looks like she's making it up as Shes going along much more likely she spent a lot of time crafting these great lines
Such openness, such freedom of thought, such an original. No pretense here. She had no material advantages but her parents encouraged her to be free and unbound by the strictures of school, church, and society, a gift beyond measure. Her art reflects this. And forgive me but she just radiates a nonbinary sexuality that renders her desirable as hell. Thank you Patti- This world is a better place because you are in it.
It's funny how Patty at 3:08 half-takes her jacket off (which is actually pretty sexy without showing anything, in the way Gilda taking her glove off was sexy) and then 20 secs later she says "I don't try to seduce, I just do what I do" Oh but you are seducing Patty!
Very interesting - a bit arrogant in her ideas - later she became more down to earth and emotional. But I listened to her first 4 albums for many years.... Still think they are masterpieces.
@@davidabest7195 - At a wild guess, I would say that pacoiec believes the men are drooling because they find her attractive but I guess you'll have to wait for pacoiec to properly answer. Nowadays it feels so "over the wall" to not define myself as part of an political ideology, the world feels like sicker than ever and I believe there has never been a time that the end felt so close to us, i mean in terms of how we graduately polute the enviroment, we're a blessed curse, so beautiful yet so potencially destructive, an universal irony.

I’ve become obsessed, in a good way!
