Patti tells in her book "Just Kids" that she didn't dream of becoming a rock-star, she just wanted to be a poet and a writer. When Bob Dylan saw her perform live, he encouraged her to continue in music. Decades later, Bob Dylan would become the first musician to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, he couldn't come to collect it, so he appointed his friend, Patti Smith, to go in his name.

YES! she is so unlike the image most have of her. She IS all the things you mention. But she's ALSO strong as hell and fearless, not at ALL afraid to stand up against injustice or assholes. I once heard an audio clip of her ripping into Ted Nugent at a radio station, when he overstayed his interview, cutting into her appearance. She told him to "get the fuck out" and began trying to physically remove him from the room! lol You can't see it, of course, but you can hear the tussle. Ted (like ALL he-man bullies) was blown away and a total puss. It was hilarious!

A few years ago for my birthday my husband got us tickets to see her on a speaking tour. We were directly across from her on the front row, mere feet from her! I literally shook the ENTIRE hour and a half--that shivery thing you do when you're 15 and you see that your huge crush is at the party! lol
Her presence is ELECTRIC and I was transfixed--ecstatic to see her, my idol, after years of adoring and being guided by her! Just wanted to share with you what happened when I saw her.....

Saw Dylan in concert in Tucson on March 4, 2022 with my teenage boys (who are diehard Dylan fanatics), and I can’t wait to show them this. Not sure how I got into Dylan many years ago (my parents never listened to music), but I’m happy to report even some Gen Z members are keeping the torch lit.
Thank you for 60 years of poetry as music (or music as poetry), Bob.

Many people bash Jimmy for being fake, but notice at 2:46 when Patti thinks she's giving "too much information" and Jimmy says "No, I love this!"..then to show he is keen, he leans in to listen to her.
These small, subconscious gestures actually shows that he really wants his guests to feel comfortable and great about themselves. I think Jimmy is a simple man and does not deserve the hate some people throw at him.

Just saw her play a couple weeks ago in Brooklyn. Crowd was borderline heckling her throughout the show but she took it all very gracefully. She was interrupted at the beginning of "Land" and got frustrated, but then she really hit her groove and the entire place shut up. Patti Smith at her best is spellbinding, I've never seen anything like it.
