  • AKA: The topic that every sports channel and their mother's been talking about for the past few days. I didn't want to say anything about it until we had confirmation about Damar's brain function. Fortunately, it seems he's got a good chance to live a normal life. The situation is ever-changing, but we can learn some quality lessons about the human spirit and life itself from it.
    This video is three minutes of rambling. Hopefully inspiring rambling.

    There's a term that J.R.R. Tolkien really tried to force into English, but it never caught on: "Eucatastrophe". Instead of a sudden change from good to bad, it was a sudden, inexplicable change from bad to good.
    Hamlin's recovery is the definition of a eucatastrophe, and I am so glad things are looking upward for him.

      @@ericwolf9664 I would counter that it was both. Millions prayed, and God answered. He watches us, out of the corner of His eye. Honestly, this whole event has done more to restore some of my faith in humanity then anything since 2019. Everyone who had some investment or other in football came together to hope for one thing, that a man would live and so far, it seems like our faith will be rewarded. Maybe it's still too early to celebrate, but given that he was awake before Christmas ended, I'm in a very hopeful mood.

      Not just the football world, I pretty much only watch hockey and this kinda stuff is felt throughout all sports. Buffalo Sabres' Tage Thompson got 3 goals for #3 in the first game after the incident which was pretty cool to see.

    It’s truly amazing to know that he’s most likely going to make an almost if not full recovery. Went from one of the unluckiest people to one of the luckiest in just a few days. I truly hope he sees what’s fit for him, whether it be deciding to still play or retire for the sake of his health. Wishing truly the best for him.

      You'd think that, even if he retires, Buffalo would do something for him like what the Steelers did for Lowell Perry: Give him a spot as an assistant coach. Even if it's not, like... A big role, like DB coach, or DB assistant coach or whatever.

    Dude, let's give love to Cincinnati, not only the team but the city. It was the away team's ambulance, EMT, hospital staff etc that also helped save this young man's life in addition to the Bills trainer. I'm sure they were all pulling for him the same regardless of what team he was on.

      @brandoelee6161 it's not. But socially it's important. Not only the bread and circus and all that but it's one of the few unifying things we got in the United States. People from all backgrounds can generally come together and bond over a city or football team. It reminds us that we're more alike than different.

      As someone in Ohio, we hate that it happened since we were off to a decent start, but 99.9 percent of us weren't mad. The game was canceled, and we just hoped he was alright. We in Ohio like our football, but we are much more grounded in reality than some other fan bases. It's good he's okay

    12 months ago I had a massive heart attack. CPR was performed on me for 26 minutes before I responded. I have made a full recovery, which proves I have a heart but questions on whether I have a brain!
    Its great to heat Demar is on the recovery path, it will be a long one. It will take atleast 6 months atleast before he gets anywhere near his normal strength back. Mentally, he would have taken a massive hit as well, the 'cardiac blues' are a very real thing and can be crippling. I really hope the Bills stand by him and offer him ongoing support even if he is unable to ever play again.

    I lost my dad suddenly almost 2 years ago now. On Wednesday we were texting and on Friday he was gone. Tell your people how much you love them. Do it every time you think of them, even if it means you have to text or call for only that reason. Don't let your love go unspoken.

    This may have been the most terrifying incident I’ve seen as a sports fan. It really is a miracle that Damar has made the progress he has, and comes to show how perfectly the medical staff handled the incident.

      Only thing that's come close for me is Romain Grosjean's wreck at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. Yet another situation where what could've been certain death was averted thanks to fast acting medical staff and the wonders of medical science.

      @@tjenadonn6158 No offense to F1's medical staff, but Romain's survival was more down to his safety equipment and sheer fucking will to live than any outside intervention. The medical team can't do any good if he doesn't crawl out of a literal wall of fire so they can reach him.
      Probably the scariest medical incident I've seen before this was a hockey goalie who took a skate to the carotid artery and would've bled out in seconds if it weren't for a trainer, who happened to be a Vietnam veteran, somehow sliding over from the bench and literally reaching into the player's neck and pinching it shut.

      It truly was a miracle that he's regained everything from a body function standpoint and not suffer permanent damage. Not just the response time of the medical team was astounding, but the power of prayer at work. The fact that he's regained every thing with no permanent damage and has a great chance of living a normal life tells me not only the medical team having the knowledge and equipment necessary to save his life, but the prayers and the power in Jesus' name given to him played the biggest role. Let's give God the glory for this young man's recovery.

    It is a shame that sometimes it takes a tragedy for us to really recognize the brief fragile nature of our life and the lives of those around us. Having lost my father just a few months back, I understand the sentiment depressingly well. I hope everyone is safe, and well, reading this the night it was posted, or a decade-plus from now looking back. Tell folks how you feel, be thankful for today. And UT, we love you too, dude.

I'm here if you need someone talk to about it because it I may have an idea what you are feeling. But definitely find a way to deal with it bro and it gets better.       Lost a brother to a stroke this year. So what you resonates with me and I think with many others. We find ways to build a sense of community- take your pick for the way you do it. And having a favorite sports team is one way. But ultimately it is entertainment and we shouldn't forget each other's common humanity. From a Chiefs fan, hoping Damar makes a full and complete recovery and has many years of life ahead of him.

      People hate the owners, the refs, and other teams organizations. Yet nobody hates specific players (mostly). Most people understand that this is just a game and that these people are just doing their job. When a player on either team is injured, people feel that and wish them a speedy recovery.

    When I heard you say that you said “I love you” more times in the past week than in a long time, I felt that greatly. Given I am currently losing my father to cancer, while this happened at the same time, it really puts into perspective for me the fragility of life.     Coming from a fan of you and your work, this is the most vulnerable and human you've ever sounded. I teared up when you cried after Nwaneri died. This hits home for me because 2022 was a shit show for me personally. I lost 2 of my pet guinea pigs, I lost my grandmother, my car got totaled in a hit and run accident, and I had to live in a hotel with my fiancee for over a month after our house caught on fire. All of these things sucked but death or even brushes with death can make you think about life and if it's really bad. Sure a lot of crap happened but I'm still alive. Damar Hamlin is a perfect reminder that even when shit hits the fan, or when things are going right, it can all be taken away in the blink of an eye. Your videos have mostly kept me sane this past year, and they give me something to look forward to on Wednesdays during football season and beyond. Thank you for everything you do. And also, fuck you, Spanos.

      Bills, Bengals, and U of Cincy, who has, sadly, had to deal with other crazy injuries caused by football before (they were the ones to initially stabilize and diagnose Ryan Shazier in 2017). They all did incredible jobs, from response time to diagnosis to recovery. Truly amazing.

    I remember checking my phone constantly while at work the night this hit happened. This injury is extremely scary and could happen at any moment. Super glad he is awake and talking again. I hope he makes a full recovery.

    Monday night after Damar’s collapse was the worst I’ve ever felt as a sports fan not knowing if he was going to live. He’s made incredible progress and it’s made me happy to see the entire NFL community rally around him. I can’t imagine the week Tee Higgins went through after this and I pray he finds peace and Damar makes a full recovery.

To watch something as traumatic as that happen in front of a national audience is a nightmare, and given the personal tragedy you experienced during the same time nobody could blame you for not being able to find your words.       I was really hoping Tua's post-concussion fencing response was going to be the most disturbing injury this season. Then the Hamlin injury happened.
      Honorable(?) mention to DeVante Parker's post-concussion daze that was mostly disturbing because of how only one player seemed to notice something was wrong.

    The massive donation to the toy drive reaffirmed my faith in humanity, that there are still good people in the world. It sucks that it took a tragedy like this to do it, but the fact that it done at all is a good deed in a weary world.

    I actually watched the game at my dad's house up in Colorado and it was just horrifying to see in real time. I feel bad for both Damar & Tee after this. At least we got some good news regarding Damar's condition and everybody in the football world joining to give support for him.

    What made me sick is the amount of people linking this to the Covid Jab. And they couldn't see it was because of Blunt force Trauma - commotio cordis. Im like dude ffs...Just glad he is on the mend and really happy for the Bills players as well. Awesome to see lots of people coming together to support and show their love to him.     Everything I saw from the on site medical teams, the doctors at the hospital, and the fact that Damar is still young gave me warranted hope that he would be all right. I’m glad I was right. Expect a new circular pad over players hearts next season.

    Yo Tree, ive watched your channel for the past 4 years and i love your content but this was the first time i have RUclips liked one of them cause of the sheer sincerity you exuded. As much as i love football, this was clearly an instance where nothing else mattered except Damar's health and well being. I truly salute the medical staff on the field, the EMT'S and the hospital doctors for saving this man's life.
