I bought a second filter to always have a clean one for a quick swap and then I can take my time about cleaning the other and not worry about not having to wait for it to dry, etc. worth it.

Thank you VERY MUCH for the really helpful video - I was NOT looking forward to this task. I took before and after photos, and 3rd after I oiled it. Looks great. Hope it works great too!
NOTE! Going to leave firing up my SUV for a while. I plan on removing the cover and seeing if I was too enthusiastic with the oil and will mop up any drippings before I go anywhere.

Something worth noting if you live in a colder clomate : ghe flexible rubber end which goes over the intake "pipe" is sensitive to temperature and can become very rigid when cold. I have had to use a heatgun to soften it up for removal , hot water was also helpful for reinstallation

    Great vid very informative!
I'd like also like to add as you mentioned spray on the pleats and do not worry about getting it completely red the first time as the oil will wick itself into the small corners etc.
I made the mistake of over oiling my filter the very first time using the square bottle .
3k miles later, my car started revving higher than usual during acceleration almost as if my trans was slipping, popped my hood took a look and sure enough small amount of air filter oil puddling near my pcm, (my air filter sits on top of my pcm) .
I was skeptical but i figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.
Re-cleaned my air filter went with the oil spray bottle instead and went easy on it.
Cleaned my MAF with MAF cleaner. Threw it all back together. And BAM my car drove back to normal.
ALSO..if you happen to drive a boosted car and experience a sudden lack of boost, take a look at your air filter before tearing other stuff apart.

A buddy of mine has K&N filters on his vintage motorcycle and he uses a high pressure air blow gun to clean them (K&N recommends NEVER use compressed air) - this is a BIG NO NO. It destroys the gauze fibers and there is nothing left but the wire cage! Yea, plenty of air flow, just zero filtering. Excellent video by the way - I'll show this to my students. Thanks so much ! This is very helpful as my eyes even with my glasses on can’t read the tiny instructions in the can and bottle.
So that’s why I found this video !
Btw I had a great laugh 😂at the ‘drying’ segment. The ‘air guitar’ 🎸 was absolutely my favourite!
@6:20 a good tip he made, check clamps, and do a visual inspection and go over everything with a screwdriver checking for tightness.
I pressed my fan belts and air con belt and found a fair amount of flex, so I’m glad I took a couple of minutes to inspect other things like hoses (condition) while replacing air filter. Also oil, power steering and brake fluid levels and coolant level in the coolant reservoir. (Take reservoir containers cap off and look in side, as the plastic container can become stained and a false level can be given from only looking from the outside).
Always take the radiator cap off (with cold engine) and check coolant level as an air bubble in the hose from reservoir to radiator can prevent coolant from topping up the radiator.

Should one install a temporary paper filter to extend the process in time and not be pressed to get vehicle back on the road? Allow the water dry off a few days and then a few days of drying after oiling?
Thank you for your help, sir.

My filter said it didn't require the oil part of the process. Would it help to do the oil anyway OR, how long do you use the oil free filter before breaking down and purchasing another filter for the K&N setup? Thank you!

I sprayed 2/3 of the can of aerosol oil on it the 6.5 ounce can, too much? Should I redo the whole process?

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  3 года назад +1

Without actually seeing it, it sounds like a lot of oil to me. If it looks really saturated with oil, you might want to wash and reoil it.

If you have a dehumidifier, put it in a small bathroom or closet and set the rinsed filters near the vents. Depending on the dehumidifier and room size, this works pretty fast.
