A few corrections. Wash from clean side out so you are not forcing particles from the dirty side into the clean side. NEVER use WD-40 as a lubricant. It is for displacing water only. You need to have oil on the filter. Your filter will be completely dry in about two days. It should not be run this way.
I just did mine and used both the K&N cleaner at first but then filled an empty old pool chlorine bucket with water and Dawn dish soap. Let the filter soak for almost an hour with also swishing the filter back/forth for the soapy water to flow through. Just by soaking the old pink oil came to the surface, dirt to the bottom. Then thoroughly rinsed with kitchen faucet and sprayer, and placed on some paper towels to air dry. After dried used the oil on the bottom side where the air comes in and used a lighter coat this time. Last time I'd oiled both sides heavily and it cost me to have a shop clean my intake and throttle body of the black gunk from the excess oil I used from before.
This is a classic case of "a litte learning is a dangerous thing". As others have noted, NEVER rinse a filter from dirty side - that only helps to push dirt into the filter then possibly the engine, if those particles arent thoroughly rinsed out. Also, WD-40 is a crappy lube because it contains petroleum distillates which are a solvent. Others have suggested using heavy motor oil, ATF or even vegetable oils.
The filter should’ve had a few minutes for the Simple Green to melt the grease, before rinsing. The filter should’ve been flushed in the opposite direction of the airflow ; from the engine side out towards the intake side. Oiling after Drying thoroughly : WD 40 isn’t going to last long because it’s a penetrant, not a lubricating oil which is formulated to hold on to parts. WD 40 is intended to migrate. Lubricant oil is intended to hang on. I’m not yet sure which oil I will use on my cleanable filter. I think I’m going to find a method to use regular motor oil. But, there is a spray oil manufactured by 3 in 1. I think that will be too light of an oil to last well, but maybe open the filter box periodically and give the filter a fresh dampening of spray oil. That seems good to me .
Now I do use household products to clean it. I soak mine in a degreaser for about a hour. Then I sit in on the deck for about a hour to let in dry in the sun. Then I use the oil in my K&N kit. DONE. Been using K&N for years no problem. Well a few days after clean I clean my mess air flow sensor.
I totally agree on going paper air filters, but you should definitely consider the KN cabin air filter, I absolutely love mine, it's been in use about 3 years now. the oil in the recharge kit goes a long way and is good for well over 10+ application/recharges done every 6 months. I got mine when I was at the store for a cabin air filter, I saw the cheapest one was a $27 paper one- so i went with the $40 KN one. It works well too, last time i cleaned mine the water ran black after only 6 months.

Humans can get very complicated. Good Video!
I definitely would not substitute the oil. yes, we all know the cleaner is probably no different than your super cleans. the oil however is critical to the actual functioning of the filter- i would use the official oil. I use kn cabin air filter, i love it btw, but the oil in the kit is good for well over 10+ applications maybe more. you only need about 15 squirts of the oil and the bottle is not small for how its used.
If you let the Simple Green sit for a while, wouldn't you get more grime out? Thanks for the video. I was JUST looking to buy the K&N cleaner and wondered if any other cleaner would work. Glad I came here.
WD 40 has Silicone in it and a drying agent that hardens the petroleum products it contains. The reason to oil the filter is to wet down the dust making the filter more effective .Also if your ride has an oxygen sensor in it, Silicone will render it useless. Give you a shout out for just your effort.

WD-40 is a water displacement liquid. It does have some lubication properties, but as far as using as a lubricant, I wouldn't. Sure, it would help clean the air filter for sure, and MIGHT do provide some sort ... of oil to the cotton in the K&N, but I think it is too thin, and it's not really designed to be used in that way. In a pinch, oh ya, sure, but if you're doing routine maintenance on your vehicle/motorcycle/whatever, you need something that resembles the properties that K&N's red oil has. Just saying, WD = water displacement... .
The oil is probably what he meant. wd 40 isn’t great for this at all. The amount of dirt it will deposit is insane. K&n oil is probably the best for not permanently trapping grit in the filter. I ruined one years ago using it. As far as simple green goes it’s perfect but only on the dirty side.

If it’s applied on the clean side, it won’t help anything and has a better chance of getting sucked out of the filter and into the engine where it can possibly get on the maf and make that malfunction.
Bro!! There is no way I'm using this method. I have a 68 Camaro with a carb, no fuel injection. One little back fire and my air cleaner is a roasted marshmallow. LOL.
I tried to clean my tires with Simple Green once. Sprayed them down really good and scrubbed hard with a brush. I didn't see hardly any dirt coming off and the tires were still dirty. So I got some Super Clean. I sprayed some on the tires with the foaming spray bottle and what do you know, dirt started to come off the tire EVEN WITHOUT using a brush. So my conclusion is Simple Green is a VERY WEAK cleaner/degreaser compared to Super Clean, at least when it comes to dirt on tires.
nice info.. after you spray the WD40, do you let it dry for a few hours before installing back in the car ? or after spraying WD40 you can immediately install it back in the car.. thanks !
"blew your engine" wtf are you talking about? are you joking or are you really that stupid to think that a little wd40 (which is a flammable solvent like the gasoline itself) is going to somehow destroy an engine? even if tipped the can and sprayed some directly into the running engine it would not "blew your engine"

Actually, WD-40 is WRONG as an oil in a K&N Air Filter !! WD-40 does not have the ability to grab onto the dust particles -- the K&N Filter Oil has a stickiness to it that grabs and holds the dirt, keeping it from entering the MAF sensor and/or the throttle plate area.
Good vid men im a fan of making it simple but effective to degrease i think is not big deal to oil it is the point have you done that process before no issues?
Is that WD 40 the silicone based type? Been all over the web, and most say not to use WD 40. I was reading a post in some forum that said ATF had been used by drag racers in the past with no ill effects. Appreciate your thoughts on this subject. I find it hard to believe that only K&N oil can be used. PEACE
Thanx for the input. I just bought this truck, and checking fluids, doing routine maintenance I found it has a K&N filter. I've never used this type of air filter (oiled) except on a lawn mower. As for the Mass Air Flow, and other sensors, I check to see what they look like weekly. Yup, I'm pretty obsessive.
It's not so much that ONLY K&N oil can be used. More that you should use the CORRECT oil, rather than just any old oil. Since K&N don't tell us what the tech specs of the oil are, then we cannot know what we COULD use as a correct alternative. Thus, any suggestions for alternatives are mere guesswork and may or may not be any good. A bottle of K&N oil lasts for loads of cleans and so works out cheap enough I'm not gonna starve, so I'm sticking with it.
Yeah sorry but you're supposed to let it dry before spraying lubricant! Water and oil don't mix. That lubricant is not penetrating and adhering because it's still wet! You going to F up MAF Sensor Bro!
K&N has 2 versions of the filter oil: 99-5000EU (international market) & 99-5000 (for US market). MSDS says 99-5000EU contains non-hazardous mineral oils, 99-5000 contains carcinogenic petroleum distillates. So K&N is peddling toxic substances while it's already got safe alternatives.
hahahaha, yeah, most of the comments are spot on. why not just use a pressure washer? this dude is NUTS! or maybe he likes buying new k&n filters (or engines) all the time lol
Next you should do a video on how you can use water instead of gasoline ,it will save you a ton of money at the pump, and seriously you could possibly use some Dawn soap and then get some fiber filter oil and spray on there. And like everyone says wash it from the inside out
Water fuel? Easy. Find a stainless steel canister, gasket sealed cover. Drill 2 holes, more gaskets nuts tighten. and two zink rods. To one inch from bottom. Have good flash back arrester between can and PVC valve or nearest to air intake. Hook up to battery. And other complicated wiring like a good lit on and off switch, or piggy back in ignition fuse switch. Fill with either baking soda and pure water. Or mild lye. Poof, u have hydrogen, which runs a vehicle just fine. Water power at its best. Loads of videos out there on the subject.
When your trying to save not spending $12-15 on your performance air filter cleaning...should you have bought one in the first place? A new paper filter will cost you about $6. Im surprised you paid the $50 for a k&n.
I thought the smell of "Green" brand air filter cleaner smelled familiar, so I went and took a whiff of simple green. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing they sell you for $17, although you do get the green oil.
DON'T DO ANY OF THIS!!!! The kit is cheaper than he says and there is a reason they want you to clean the filters a certain way! This is a good way to ruin your filter and harm your engine.
After that whole process you should and a cup of sand so itll absorb the ions and benefit the flex capacitor......just make a paste with wd40 and sand ....evenly cake it on the filter.....and re install👍
Simple green, don’t use the stream only use the spray (As he uses the high pressure faucet to force the crap deep into the pleats of the filter). BTW.... you cleaned it wrong. Water should be sprayed against the air flow so you’re not forcing dirt deeper into the filter. Don’t ever use WD-40 especially on a carbureted vehicle. It could be catastrophic. Read the can FLAMMABLE. I recommend removing this video UNLESS it’s your desire to screw newbies over.
Wow, that was legit. I prefer to use non ethanol gasoline and organic olive oil. For hard to clean spots I just lightly spray it with a pressure washer. 😆
Or you could just save the 15 mins of washing time, the 2-3 hours of filter drying time and $15 on the recharge kit (not to mention the $90 on the K&N filter) AND JUST USE A NORMAL AIR FILTER. LOL Talk about Rube Goldberging things. LOL! A fool and his time and money are soon parted.
Buy the kit for 10 dollars on amazon or the big bottle of K&N cleaner and oil. For 10 dollars a piece I usually clean after every oil change, it's good every 15000 miles but I like to clean my every 5000. The big bottles will last a long time plus easier to spray. Dont listen to this fool. The cleaner is made specifically for that filter. The chemicals in simple green and wD 40 could ruin your filter.

Tough Crowd in here. Well done Jon Drives. Glad you fessed up about the Rinsing Direction.
Thanks man
Glad I check around for alternate techniques…viewer beware!
Rinsing should be from bottom and WD40 from top side of the filter
Just an FYI... The 'Cleaner' is Wesley's Bleche White. Trust me, side-by-side, you'll agree.
So any wd40 works I thought it would catch fire once the engine warms up seeing as mine is right next to the engine I have a neuspeed air filter
NO !! WD-40 DOES NOT WORK to remove dust particles -- most of it EVAPORATES !!
Any specific WD40 product you use?....there's lots of different ones.
WD-40 K&N special edition
Is it ok the penetrant fluid go inside your engine??
No
Good vid men im a fan of making it simple but effective to degrease i think is not big deal to oil it is the point have you done that process before no issues?
Great tip
Is that WD 40 the silicone based type? Been all over the web, and most say not to use WD 40. I was reading a post in some forum that said ATF had been used by drag racers in the past with no ill effects. Appreciate your thoughts on this subject. I find it hard to believe that only K&N oil can be used. PEACE
the kit is cheap, just do it the right way and dont risk destroying the MAF sensor that cost A LOT.
Thanx for the input. I just bought this truck, and checking fluids, doing routine maintenance I found it has a K&N filter. I've never used this type of air filter (oiled) except on a lawn mower. As for the Mass Air Flow, and other sensors, I check to see what they look like weekly. Yup, I'm pretty obsessive.
.... WTF??!!
Never use pressurized water at all to clean cotton gauze filters
why u used w 40 ?
same people being rude in comments are same people who put filters on there CCV
This is exactly HOW NOT TO RECHARGE your air filter.
Hmmm I'm going to try it thanxs 👍
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 no fool!
That's a lot of laughing faces
Great video, thanks mate.
Yeah sorry but you're supposed to let it dry before spraying lubricant! Water and oil don't mix. That lubricant is not penetrating and adhering because it's still wet! You going to F up MAF Sensor Bro!
You watch it again and see for yourself if he sprayed with wd40 while its wet.. stup..d
K&N has 2 versions of the filter oil: 99-5000EU (international
market) & 99-5000 (for US market). MSDS says 99-5000EU contains
non-hazardous mineral oils, 99-5000 contains carcinogenic petroleum
distillates. So K&N is peddling toxic substances while it's already
got safe alternatives.
I’m sure the US just has a different opinion than europe of what a carcinogen is. They are prob the same product.
Bro lol nahh your doing the viewers a disservice with this video 🤣
Whatever “oiling” agent you use should only be applied on one side. The side that will be the dirty side.
hahahaha, yeah, most of the comments are spot on. why not just use a pressure washer? this dude is NUTS! or maybe he likes buying new k&n filters (or engines) all the time lol
Im just here for a good time
can we use petrol or kerosene instead of mr green?
Gracias fiera !
Your only suppose to oil the dirty side after cleaning not both sides...
New Napa paper filter in Washington state costs $25
You are pouring the water the wrong way
i just told him
Recharger kit is only 13$ on Amazon and Walmart !!
so it's works on any filters?
Mindaugas Berteska
No, absolutely not. Don’t do this on a normal paper filter, you need a washable filter.
And now you can head over to rock auto and order a new mass air flow sensor
You can degrease it and it will be fine but the ( WD40 ) bro WTF!
Crazy Manny cheap way in a pinch I guess. Helps trap dirt. The kit got cheaper since I made this video years ago lol
Crazy Manny make sure to subscribe
I have a k&n filter and I've ben degreasing it for years with no problems. I have never once used the kit Lol 😉😁👍
I thought the smell of "Green" brand air filter cleaner smelled familiar, so I went and took a whiff of simple green. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing they sell you for $17, although you do get the green oil.
good video
How NOT to clean a k&n filter lol. Nice job pushing the dirt INTO the filter
Good info. Thx dude
Shane Soto no prob 👍
Is it important to allow the filter to dry completely after the WD40 step?
DON'T DO ANY OF THIS!!!! The kit is cheaper than he says and there is a reason they want you to clean the filters a certain way! This is a good way to ruin your filter and harm your engine.
After that whole process you should and a cup of sand so itll absorb the ions and benefit the flex capacitor......just make a paste with wd40 and sand ....evenly cake it on the filter.....and re install👍
Poncho Sanchez that’s what I did the next go around 👍
LOL! A fool and his time and money are soon parted.
actually this is more cost effective in the long term. Do the math.
I wash my paper filters... about three time befor3 bing a new one......
