THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO!!!! I almost erased all of my data. I just purchased a 2nd HDD for my system. Now i have 2 1TB HDD's. I wanted to set up a Raid 0 array for better performance. But, I wasn't sure if I would lose the data on my first disk that contains my Windows OS, Steam/Ubisoft Games, and other programs. I was just about to set it up when I watched your video. And, I really appreciate that you mentioned, "only blank disks should be used to set up a Raid, because it will erase all of the data stored on the disks." I've watched tons of video tutorials on creating Raid Arrays and you were the first to include that VALUABLE piece of information. You're a life saver! Thanks...
so wait, i know this comment was 4 years ago but, did you enable the RAID array in the end or not?
Bump. Crucial info there, bub. we need to know

Wtf, I thought his last name was Tech Tips
+Alan Thomas Old linus worked for NCIX but now he has his own channel which is Linus Tech Tips this video was made in 2010
+dafuqawew it's not a very funny joke. He asked a dumb question, he gets a simple answer for his simple mind to understand.
+BLACK_POLAR_BEARS_FTW! yeah umm... that's not a question... its a statement :P So since there is no need for an answer its simply a joke that normal people smile to and move on.
Yapsonark It was a question. But yeah like you said normal people would have moved on.
No, it wasn't a question. It's not difficult to tell statements apart from questions.
Hell, we have a whole symbol for just this situation. Check it out:
?
So, a RAID with SSD's should technically be called a RAED?
Daniel W yeah, "E" for Expensive
The "I" has been changed to Independent these days
@@bobbarker2814 you're right! Thanks for mentioning!
This is why I love Linus... because he gives you lots of extra detail like the fact that setting up any raid will wipe any data on your drive.
The best explanation I've seen of this so far. I've been fiddling around and have a good grasp of the theoretical side, but still seeing how you laid it out made me completely certain about what exactly I'm doing when I'm choosing between 0 and 1. Great series.
Wow, it's a lot simpler than I thought! Thanks Linus! :D
linus makes it more easy
You set it up before you put anything on your hard drives.
Thank you Linus, not only did you help me to fall in love with computers, you helped me to get my Comptia A+ repair certification this year.
man it is amazing how far he has come
Amazing explanation Linus!
RAID is awesome, but was a pain 10yrs ago using Ultra SCSI drivers... If you had a failure you'd have to wait ages to get a replacement. Good video tho, hence most of the MoBos are capable of using RAID with SATA drives everyone now can set it up! xD
Unfortunately my MoBo dors not support RAID...
José Carlos Pereira In a datacenter is a rule to have spare hdd drives to replace damaged disks in an array. Is always best practice to have spare drives at hand or a gold contract. I.E: dell can give you a new hard drive for your servers under contract in max 4 hours.
I done a video on my channel about raid 0, 1, 10
holy crap! baby Linus!
Never done a raid setup. Came into matching 1TB drives. I figure windows+games for RAID 0. I've had some minor knowledge of RAID 0 before but I didn't know about RAID 1. This video both gave me the knowledge to make my decision of which works best for me. As well as the knowledge to properly setup my drives. Thank you, much appreciation for taking the time to make a video that saved me a lot of time. (P.S. I have a 3tb for data storage so data loss isn't a big deal.)
Thank you Linus for your effort. Your demonstrations are clear and understandable!
I need all the arrows......
Hi Linux, can I RAID 1 a Samsung M.2 120gb with a Samsung ssd 120gb? Also, I have files installed on both (including the OS in the M.2), so is it possible to RAID them without formatting my drives?
Thanks
ye
Old video but yet very educative, thanks for this great job Linus.
Glad I watched this before putting Raid 1 in, I didn't know it would wipe the drives when you applied the settings, thanks again Linus.
8:04 Great Dance!
Is raid 0 with 2 ssd reliable enough for an os? Thanks in advanced
This is EXACTLY what I was planning to do, if you find any videos about it, I'd love to know about them. Thanks in advance :).
dude, you explained RAID 1 and 0 better in 3 minutes than my instructor did in 1 hour. Thanks!
RAID noob here. Will setting up a RAID delete existing data? Specifically for a RAID 1? And if I set up a RAID 1 with two 840 EVO drives, can it be done if one is 120gb and the other is 250?
I don't know if this is still relevant to you but to answer your questions:
Yes it will delete all your existing data.
Yes it can be done with two different capacity drives, but you will only be able to have the capacity of your smallest drive, so in your case 120GB
I have 2 EVO 840 1TB SSDs, I'd want to make a RAID 0, but I got an AMD Build.
I've searched to oblivion a way to activate TRIM (Trash Collector) in RAID 0 With AMD Chipsets on Windows, no luck so far, Anybody knows a hack, trick or way to do it?
Thumb Up if you want Linus to give us a definitive answer to this matter!
Thumbs up! Not what I needed, but love the delivery and the explanation!
You, sir, are one hell of a trainer. That was an excellent explanation for beginners
Can you RAID 0 two SSDs and then have them automatically backup everything (including OS) to a HDD?
Sure, you can use some software solution to do that on a weekly/monhtly basis. I would recommend AOMEI Partition Assistant (it's Freeware).
This guy is a genius.
Sheldon Cooper Umm... you can't be Sheldon Cooper...
zdrux - I'll look into this :) I've decided against using RAID, but this could be a great thing to have still.
*****
You didn't understand the question...
It has been 3 years but if you still don't know for whatever reason, RAID 10 combines the two, basically putting raid 0 in a raid 1 array
i can manually do a RAID1 Array. it just takes time.
Watching this in 2017 😎 Funny to see the difference from your newer episodes :)
Thanks for the helpful information!
Got to love the dance at 8 mins!
Who watching this in 2019?
ye
2020 my friend
So if i run raid 1 with 2 1tb drives, i only have 1tb total?
nevermind i just finished the video
Thanks bro u made me laugh hahaha
This Guy is AWESOME. I like the way he TALK and EXPLAIN. keep the hard work you do here BRO. Cheer from PUERTO RICO.
This was easy to understand and really well taught! Kudos!
my god! linus looks like he's my age in this vid...(im 17)
Well I am exaggerating...he look 20
Your explanation of how RAID-0 works is wrong. Striping isn't done on the bit level, it's done on the block level.
Using your example of "0110011001" and assuming a block is 5 bits long for simplicity, the first drive would write "01100" and the second drive would write "11001" simultaneously. The drives does not write alternating bits like you did in the video.
most people don't need that infi
+Potato Snipes info*
He got the point across. No one really cares at what level the data is split.
Only on a Linus video would you find people ignorant enough to defend the wrong information. Amazing.
create ur own video then ... .
Good ol days!!! .. You rock Linus!!
Its always funny to watch one of his old videos
Ncix can't even afford a board stand 🐸🐸🤣🤣
Thanks for helping of setting up my first Raid 0 configuration.
Very nice and easy to understand explanations! Thank you for the video!
Thank you we have a hands on test going over this in my hardware class.
Thank you very much for making this video, I learn a lot from you man, your awesome and your manner is perfect, informational and not all beat around the bush talkin too much!! Thank you!!
Fantastic!!! So clear and concise! Well done!
Wow I learned a lot about raid I mean ive seen so many raids in my lifetime but i dunno what they are but this vid. changes all that Thank you man
If you're still reading this Linus, one potential reason that two RAID-1 drives can fail in a close time proximity is if both drives entered service together and have now written beyond the TBW. Other than that, excellent video for explaining basic RAID-0 vs RAID-1 to noobs.
Very good explanation and tutorial. Thanks!
superb!!! THANKS A BUNCH LINUS!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
Thank you for this video!
This video was extremely informative.
Very informative. Thank you.
Very nice Video to understand RAID0 and RAID1
Watching this in November 2020 -- whoa there Linus
Thank you so much. I am building my PC for photo editing and have lost information due to crashes. I will be doing this with my new set up. This was very helpful.

Thank you for a very clear explanation.
Very good and detailed explanation
Thank you for the tutorial...is exactly what i was looking for.
very informative thanks .Your doing a great job!!!
Fantastic overview
Good job! So what about having 2 drives with raid 0, and a separate drive with your complete operating system cloned to that 3rd disk for backup in case the raid drives fail?
THANKS its very simple & help full
You make the best Vids. TY so much!
thank you sooo muchhhh , thanks alot , now today i understand what is RAID and how it work .
Love your vids man. You are the best.
really good videos / thank you for the time to explain it all in great detail
i watched and learned something really awesome almost 4 years after this came out.... i love you linus. no homo ;P
Wow wow wow, Excellent Explanation....
at first his voice sounded a little overreacted to me, but then i started to enjoy his explanations.
i already knew what was raid 0 and 1 but he really explains it throughly very correctly and clear, and he tends to mention even the minimal detail (like raid 1 is more expensive per byte than a single non raid disk which is obvious but one might forget).
thanks for the vid.
I love these kind of videos
Awesome Explanation...
thanks for useful education, you re the boss!
the best guide on youtube
Very informative and easy to understand for an average Joe like me
Nice video. Question...if I have two hard drives set up as raid 1, and one of the drives goes out, can I unplug the bad drive and immediately start using the good drive (I'm assuming it should have identical content)? And how do you create a new raid 1 with a new hard drive, using the remaining good drive (I ask because I tried to set up a raid a few minutes ago and it said that all of the information would be erased from both drives in order to complete the set up)? Thanks!
@NCIX Tech Tips How would you go about backing up a SSD (boot drive) with a HDD
(mirror/backup drive) of the same size? Using RAID 1 or backing up
manually to the HDD when needed at your convenience? I hear the RAID 1
option makes the performance go down to that of the slowest drive (the
HDD).
Thank you for the lesson. I have learn a lot
excellent tutorial!!
Talking about RAID 01 (0+1) would bee a great addition. RAID 01 is a nice in between with just 3 disks you have save data (from conventional disc failure) bc data is always present at 2 drives at all times as well as the benefit of increased performance.
Very nice tutorial. I like it.
Thank you Professor Linus.
very good video...simple and clear...Thank you very much....
Nice video. Thanks for the info!
boy ! you are an awesome tutor.
GREAT VID!! he explained Everything perfectly! .. should so be a Teacher!
quick question when you spoke about raid0 & raid1: when it comes to set up, is it either one, or can i do i need to set both ? also, do i need to clean reinstall os right after raid0 & or raid 1 set up? and how to recreat array? million thanks in advance....
I have an ssd as my boot drive already in my system, the 2nd ssd in the system I have because I was messing with hackintosh. If I want, can I format the hackintosh drive and add it onto the other one in raid 0. Or do both drives need to be empty initially?
Thank you very much for this video sir !!! hope that you can make more videos like this..
Is there anyway to RAID partitions? I've currently got a 120GB SSD and need more space, however not much more. Since the price for a 240GB (same vendor) has decreased a lot, I'd like to know if it's possible to buy that and use half (120GB) of it as RAID 0 and the other 120GB as a normal partition?
@Cashilysh I believe from there, as long as your motherboard supports a raid configuration, you have to configure the raid setup in your bios to be raid0, raid1 etc... and which drives to select. I believe it's normal to ask you to erase HDD's. Just look through your bio's carefully it should ask you which drives you want to use, you'll have to select both. I would look through videos on configuring raid for a computer/mobo similar to yours. You might need raid drivers if your mobo is old.
hi thanks for this. Can raid 0 be done on a 3tb and 1tb hdd set up? i do video editing and want to increase performance.
what would be the best way to back the HDD up? just use external HDD I'm guessing?
Thank you so much for this. I was clueless until well just now. What do you think about Seagate Momentus XT 500GB 7200 RPM in raid 1? I am a gamer but cannot afford 2x ssd drives.
Very helpful!
Hi, thanks for your nice video. May I ask the storage manger screen is inside bios or is it a software installed in windows?
I want to buy a server and it will be delivered directly to a data center. It comes with 4 HDs of the same size and I want to setup RAID 0. So can I configure RAID from either BIOS or a software inside operating system? What I'm not clear is is there any special hardware setup before I configure RAID?
Thanks!
Great video you went over everything that I needed to know. Quick question though, how many raid levels are there anyway?
