Watching this in 2022 it's just like as if I were in a time machine! From a humble beggining for today's success! It makes me so proud of Linus, man! He never gave up!
You are an outstanding teacher! I love it that I have to pause it every once in a while to catch up--that is rare. Usually when I try to learn stuff on RUclips I have to fast forward to find the ten percent or so of the video that is actually educational. You're a breath of fresh air: you don't waste any time and I bet you've taught more people more efficiently than just about anybody else on RUclips. Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge, and so respectful of your students' time. One a scale of one to five I give you six stars. Thanks again.
Hey NCIX - thank you for taking the time and effort to product this excellent, easy to understand and follow, video tutorial on SATA I, II & III, and SAS, cable usage and terminology. Keep up the good work!
i am from germany and i understand him very vell... chris harris, top gear uk and this guy, they all speak perfect english which is easy to understand even for people with a different mother language...
Great job. I needed to know about those standards as I am running a net Cafe here. My equipment will be ready for upgrade and you video will help me in my buying and installation decisions. Thanks so much.
@sandiegoborn32 yes, it is possible. The PCI-E slot runs at reduced bandwidth though (I believe they officially ran at PCI-E x4 equivalent), even though they were connected electrically as a PCI-E x16 card. Some motherboard makers did this to ease the transition from AGP to PCI-E when consumers first started moving in 2004 and 2005.
@OfTehRose Yes, SATA2 is backwards and forward compatible with SATA3. Meaning you can also plug SATA3 drives into SATA2 connectors. But the drive will be limited to SATA2 throughput of 3Gbps.
Great Video , Thank you so much for taking your time , and go back in time. What a breakdown you did. OUTSTANDING VIDEO !! Thanks again for using correct terms!
@pirozguro 15000 rpm would generally give lower seek times than 7200 rpm. Which is pretty handy, on servers with many users. And no magnetic/mechanical drive, can take advantage of Sata 6Gbit/s.
@arim215 it doesn't matter. The cables themselves are identical as Linus mentioned. The only thing you need to watch for is whether the drive can take full advantage of the interface it is being connected to. For example, there is no sense in connecting an SSD that can provide read and/or write rates of over 375 Megabytes per second to a SATA 3Gbps controller. Connecting said drive to a SATA 6Gbps controller would allow you to take full advantage of the speed that drive offers.
@TheProph7 errr... small correction. Linus actually said they were much like network cables, in that some may have additional features like locking mechanisms, or some may be slimmer or longer, but one can connect any cable between any drive and motherboard and it should work without issue.
@GamingPrower It should work just fine; you should worry more about the cpu causing fps drops. The hard drive only affects load times for the most part.
My new built computer say "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." What is the problem? I dont have any OS disc yet but is it gonna be fix when I installed windows
Great video I have just bought an SATA 3 SSD drive and my older motherboard only has SATA 2 speeds and connections I was told by my local shop that I should purchase a controller card to convert SATA to to SATA 3 making it run at the 6gbps that it is meant to.
i've seen many ppl replace their perfectly working sata cables when they upgraded to a sata3 harddrive. A sata 3gbits cable will work with the exact same efficiency as a sata 6gbits cable, they r infact identical except to a different lable printed on them
so what was the purpose of docking the sata II connections onto the side of the motherboard? for eSata connectivity much like a USB or external storage device?
@leetfrogcat two things: 1) there is a BIG difference between GB/s and Gb/s 2) unless you get a SSD that can transfer more than 3Gb/s, there is no point in upgrading to 6Gb/s
so i can connect multiple IDES to one esata? i was wanting to build a tower or box that holds 10 IDE hard drives with its own power supply which allows you to connect them to a PC via esata. because motherboards these days either dont support IDEs at all or only have 2 IDE ports at most.
well I actually understood most of this not because of you brother lol you might be only reason I come to you tube for help on pc world but as always I came to learn 1 thing and now got to learn 6 more things lmao but all worth it and thankful to you and sponsors that have the sight to see you are worth every dime they pay you.
I have a major issue and I am in search of ideas to solve it. I have connected a red Sata Cable to the Sata 1 connector on the motherboard but found it to be to short for use. I tried to pull out the cable but the plastic clip is not working and is not allowing the two small locking tabs to free themselves from the holes to allow the freedom of the cable to be pulled out. I have tried poking at them with several different items and even tried to use needle nose pliers to attempt to squeeze the tab in far enough to disengage the locks. All have failed me. Any suggestions from anyone??? I follow Linus avidly on your tube so fire away at resolutions here.
There's a molex female connector on my 2.5 hdd along with SATA... The SATA data connector is rusted But what is the molex connector for exactly can I use it for data transfer and how to use it?
Thank you! I'm still confused about the SATA cabling for my DVD drive. It came with only the data cable, but not the power cable. Will the power cable come with the power supply (not yet purchased)? Or will I have to purchase the SATA power cable separately, and if so, does that also plug into the motherboard to draw power through that from the power supply, or does it connect directly to the power supply? It's been over 20 years since I did a build, and was used to the "Master/Slave" IDE cables. Since that's gone, now I have to learn a lot of stuff "over-again-for-the-first-time." Help?
I have a question for the community: I have an XP computer with SATA 1 connections. Does it specifically need SATA 1 cables, or will the later versions work as well?
so in terms of connection speed, if i wanted to connect an external hard drive via sata III, it would be a faster connection than say, a USB 2/3.0 interface?
Hello Linus, need help for the safety issue of using MOLEX 4PIN to SATA power connecter............I bought a computer with an outside PSU brick so if I want to get one more SSD into the system I need to use an adapter to utilize the on-board 4 PIN molex to supply power to the SSD. However, I heard that the molex 4pin to SATA cable catches fire frequently (please kindly google "SATA connector burn", all of them are this kind of adapter cables, which has only 4 wires instead of 5)..............can I get some professional opinion from you guys about this 4pin to sata adapter? Silverstone is still selling it, does is mean it's still reliable?
I see all of these motherboards offering things like two SATA III ports at 6gb/s and four SATA II ports at 3gb/s, but I know that if you were to load up all of the ports on such a motherboard, you likely wouldn't be able to get the full potential speed out of each port. I can't even find how much SATA bandwidth any chipsets offer. How can you tell whether or not a given motherboard will be able to keep up with your storage devices?
So I recently got my computer and shipped it overseas already built, and got a lot of parts I have to personally plug in, including the sata cables, Wi-Fi receiver it comes with, and a few other cables that I'm not too sure about. My first time looking at this and already overwhelmed by only a few things
@sucdeguacamole I'd say that mobo he did that on is LONG past warranty, the fact it had TWO IDE/PATA (Parallel AT Attachment) and TWO SATA (Serial AT Attachment) ports, it's probably a really damn old 775 (the fact it had Conroe printed on the board makes it LGA 775 with the early Core2's), it's already over 4 years old and going on 5 years since the Conroe-based Core2's came out in August '06.
I just upgraded my C drive to an SSD. I use it for just my OS & programs. I made my old drive for Storage for my Documents I want to do a third External drive for back up. My main board is an Intel D67GD. Running Windows 7 home premium with 16 GB DDR3 ram I have support for both USB 3 and eSATA (Red Connector) which would be a faster, connection USB3 or eSATA?
im an old man trying to learn about computers, i really like your videos, what exactly does sata do for your computer, and also i see note books with 32 gb could you run a youtube channel with that small amount of gb, and what would i look for if i am buying a computer just for making youtube channel, thank you i reall enjoy your videos, thanks
This guy might be big one day. He's got good tech tips
Ya, we would call his YT channel... ✨Linus Tech Tips✨

I just watched an entire 10 minute video on SATA cables and it was worth every minute.
Linus, you did it again, you helped me solve a tech problem with a video older than my nephew
Huh, these tech tips are really good. Maybe worthy of millions of subscribers!
Very informative.Thank You for speaking in a loud clear intelligent voice.
He's treating those motherboards how I treat my meat
Cameron Scott he wasn't jerking those boards
He didn't tenderize them though.

Wow man, I enjoyed your entire video bud. good job
Nice history lesson! Introducing about Sata 6.0 gb/s. Bet you never thought we'd still be stuck on this 8 years later.

Thank you for making this video. I am preparing for the CompTIA A+ certification and this video helped me understand SATA.

Very informative, learned a lot; however, could not understand what the controller card at the end of videos was called! Are you saying "staff card"?

Well done Linus for inventing the word 'thoroughput'. Maybe you meant throughput?
I was looking for some sata connector advice, but i wasn't expecting to find this guy😂
HIGHLY EDUCATIONAL. thANK YOU LINUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So...
Whats the biggest length a sata cable can be?
Good explanation. We have gone from PATA to SATA#G/s and caballing has gotten much neater. What is more important is the controllers.
My mom's PC was bought in 2002 and she is still using it. IDE cables and the works. :)
Very well explained Linus!! You deserve a subscriber

@NewRisingSong SATA is backwards compatible on both controller and device side. So yes, you can connect a SATA3 drive to a SATA2 port.
so what was the purpose of docking the sata II connections onto the side of the motherboard? for eSata connectivity much like a USB or external storage device?
@leetfrogcat
two things:
1) there is a BIG difference between GB/s and Gb/s
2) unless you get a SSD that can transfer more than 3Gb/s, there is no point in upgrading to 6Gb/s

I had the first motherboard he used. It was really janky as a hybrid board, but It really did have ports for everything.
so i can connect multiple IDES to one esata? i was wanting to build a tower or box that holds 10 IDE hard drives with its own power supply which allows you to connect them to a PC via esata. because motherboards these days either dont support IDEs at all or only have 2 IDE ports at most.
