For the old-timers, there were two standard sizes before ATX: full-size AT and Baby AT.
VWestlife I love your channel
VWestlife ok. Good to know. And no offence here but it means the same to me as I where to tell you that the first ever motorcycle chassis was made of wood.

Lol "ITX is cheaper yet" My fucking ass.
Exactly what I thought... mATX is the cheapest and ATX and mITX are around the same
rv3392 I've found mITX boards with business grade chipsets that cost just as much as mATX with gaming grade chipsets.
power supply has nothing to do with the motherboard but okey

Is that a Gun on the motherboard?
+Joshua Theys ah, clever. You see that is a facsimile of a gun. Pretty tricky eh?
Yes, it was designed to look like a gun
+Kian Gurney Or just anyone with taste. It's such a gaudy, tryhard looking design that I'm surprised anyone over the age of 14 can like it.
Doomguy yeh, i dont like the extreme gaming look, the tough armour look, or the weapon look
+Lapine Block Does that gun-thing actually serve a purpose, or is it just there for aesthetics?
You have no idea how useful this channel is. I'm a tech enthusiast myself, and I have handpicked each component in my system but as much as I'd love to, I no longer have enough time to keep up with all the technological advancements at the speed that they are happening nowadays. Your work helps me in that direction tremendously. Thanks for the great insight. Good job as always.
how about now?
This video needs an update, I'd love a refreshed version of this
This is such a good channel, so much better than the advice you get in PC shops, even specialist ones.
Well to be fair, You're not buying from these guys. The PC shops will tell you "yeah, you need this 2kw power supply to game" just because they want to sell more valuable stuff.
It's time to change your microphone, mate!
IKR, speakers were popping the entire video.
*****
or add a proper pop filter. That generally works as well.
Aukerai
its not a suggestion if you dont explain how to do that, it's just criticism then
William Kendrick
You purchase a pop filter, and place it in front of your microphone, taking care that it doesn't touch the microphone (otherwise some vibrations will be transferred, lessening the effect).
It's not hard.
If you want to ghetto it, a piece of stocking or pantyhose stretched over say - a cardboard tube that's bigger than the surface area of the mic does the trick almost as well as a professional solution.
All it does is deaden the explosive air pressure of puh, buh, etc sounds, so that it doesn't cause clipping. This is because a microphone's diaphragm is a sensitive mechanical device that vibrates back and forth. (this is even more so the case with condenser microphones than dynamic microphones)
the cloth windshield covering a microphone (this is present on say, the Shure SM-58, although that uses a metal windshield) is not enough to prevent all popping sounds, and is mainly designed for it's namesake, to prevent wind from interfering with the sound. It also protects the mic by preventing saliva from reaching the microphone, which is typically slightly corrosive, and damaging to a microphone. )
Aukerai
wow, lots of useful information! thank you :)

I investigated all this stuff when I bought my last computer but I still learned something new. There's so much information in this video!
Excellent job Linus!! You are such a great presenter. I hope you make one on socket types :D
ATX itself was an extension of IBM's AT board standard, i.e. they rotated the expansion slots and IO sockets by 90 degrees.
I have an E-ATX motherboard in an ATX case. I was initially worried, but it just fit together and worked!
Thank you for this video. Perfect timing. I was just considering a purchase of a mini ITX motherboard but wasn't sure if it would mount in my friend's case or not.

Very well done video guys! Audio is a touch rough but will share with my friends who need to know this info.
Linus, since recently the audio in your videos has a weird background sound on it which resembles the sound a small spring would make.
Sort of sounds like a mouse-wheel.
Why is Linus here?
This was very helpful, I've been wondering if a mini itx will work with matx mounts and yes, yes it will.
Isn't this the best Tech quickie video in a while? I think it was a great vid anyways :)
Was wishing something was mentioned regarding XL-ATX, E-ATX, HP-ATX.
and uATX
Expected this video to be sponsered by tunnel bear( ;_; )
i already know the stuff covered in Techquickie so far and if i didn't i don't think ide learn anything useful, especially this one, sooo much technobabble
Thanks for this, I was trying to find a regular ATX because I didn't think a Micro ATX would fit my ATX case but I think it will
Mulchy YT same
I am decreasing sizes of my computers. When I just started my computer-upgrading hobby, I always bought ATX boards and large cases. A couple of years ago I switched to mATX (shame on AMD for not having them with AM3+ socket). I think the next upgrade might be mini-ITX, if I will be able to pick a good enough case+cooling combo for overclocking.
if you are going itx i would reccommend the 250d
danvar249
Thanks for the tip, but I've just upgraded one of the two my PCs recently. I don't think I'm gonna upgrade any more this year, and next year more things will come out. And I have a really bad feeling about Corsair after the crappy H100i I have currently.
Also planning to build a NAS this year in Fractal Design Node 304 mini ITX case, that should be interesting.
Ubeogesh check out Xigmatek Nebula for itx, It has better looking than 250D but less room for cooler and graphics card
ibrahim husein I disagree on the looks. The 250d is imo the best looiking mini itx case on the market.
For me, if i want to build an itx pc, i want it sit next to the tv and stream games from my big pc. I think nebula does look better for that. If I want to build an itx pc for actual gaming pc, then 250d is better since it can handle water cooler and bigger graphics card. It really depends on the purpose and personal taste actually. Cooler Master make nice itx cases too.
I ordered the CM Elite 110 just under $50 for my itx build since no nebula can be found in my area. Best thing about this case, I can put a seidon 120v in it to cool my A8 6600K
What would a 4x3 SFF ATX motherboard be? Will it fit in a Micro-ATX case?
Love!! fitting one of these in before I start work - FREAKING AWESOME!!!
This is the best channel for me.
Keep up the amazing job Linus!
Linus listen... I'm sorry, but you've got one thing wrong here!
Square space has been in business for 17 years now!
Watching this I’m 2019 and I go “why is ITX limited to a quad core?” We’ve come so far.
Right? You can technically stick a 3950X in a mini ITX AM4 board and then bam, you have a 16 core 32 thread ITX machine. That said, you should probably have a bit more room for such a beastly CPU.
You can put a Xeon platinum 8180 or other 28 core cpu into a Mini-itx board thanks to asrock.
Damn, I'm addicted to these Fast As Possible -videos! :D Great job Linus!
My GOD!! I wish I knew about this channel before T_T so much tech geeky information I can just explore to my heart's content!!! Lol :D which is especially good considering i'm currently working my way to earning a degree in computer science! ^_^

I find micro-atx the best size because you can put two gpus.
LOL, not everyone want to put 2 GPU on their Computer. Even one GTX 980Ti is enough to play all new game in 4k res. at high detail.

i have a question: im trying to plan out my first gaming pc build and it crossed my mind that i could save alot using a mini atx board. would a smaller board lead to problems like longevity or cooling moreso than a standard size one?
And is there much in the way of limitations? Just from what i saw it liiks like you cant put as much ram or expansions into a matx, but as far as i know all i need minimally is 2 ram ports a video card port and a wifi card port. I just dont want to get a board and realize it doesnt have enough slots for gaming stuff
Xylius Schaaij actually that sounds like a good idea thanks

idk my matx board is about 20$ more then the atx version and the itx version is even more
You look at Mini-ITX now and you have m.2, bluetooth, wifi, 6 usb ports, and up to 64gb ram on some.
TisEsMe 10mm (14 maybe i forgot) iphone 7 chip… that is "as powerful as most computers" and has a 64 bit architecture … and the snapdragon 820-821-830 at 14-20mm and… quad core- 830 octacord… processor… and the 820 should be able to be turned into a desktop (the s8 rumored to be able to be used as a computer being connected to a device) laptops are great, still. But its slowly being pushed away since phones have taken the market being, so powerful, most new cellphones are a decade ahead od nasas computers since tech advances so fast and some of the tech they use should be able to be sent to space (so change in batteries etc)…
cool
+Overknight 52 One year after comment this happened, Dell introduced a Snapdragon 835 powered Laptop.....and it was utter garbage, ARM-64 and X-86 are not compatible, Windows could not run for crap, you have to emulate true 64 bit programs.
every video is very informative! . goodjob Linus !
love the segways in tech quicky
If i get a micro atx motherboard and an atx power supply will these be compatible?
Yes it will work. They use the same connections that are the same atx standard.
As long as the power supply has a 20 pin connector (usually most psu have a 24 or 20 pin that can be changed from between.).
There's an issue with your sound recording.
Thanks for the continues information you shared. I watched all you videos mostly at your Linus Techtips channel.. And i built my 1st Gaming and CAD designing PC because of that last 2013. I'm planning to build again another one this year primarily for 3Ds max rendering of my Architectural projects. I'm looking for a bang for the buck GPU meant for the 3ds Max Software and found out that Firepro and Quadro are the best choices for that particular platform but the better one is too expensive for me right now.
This was informative. Thank you.
Had you sung this to the tune of "dem bones" it would have been more entertaining.

thank you, i was confused because i was buying a case for atx standard and i have a mini itx motherboard
You can use a Xeon workstation chip with X99 itx motherboards, and there are C-series chipset equiped itx boards, so you CAN build a workstation off a itx motherboard.

Love that series
170 mm² and your graphic shows it's 170 mm × 170 mm... that's 28900 mm²...
what is your point exactly?
he probably refers to the fact that the board is square shaped not to the area of the borad ;)
he said "170 mm squared" not "170 square-millimeters". linus didn´t say anything wrong here
Kowolski01 Actually 170 mm squared is the same as 170 square millimetres.
jdude99lolz It's not the same, 170 mm squared, means that u square 170, which is 170² or in simpler terms, 170 x 170, and 170 square-millimetres is 170 mm², which refers the unit of measurement, its two different things, see.
170 mm to the power of 2 = 170 * 170 so...

i love linus, he has the best tech stuff on youtube.
Actually really helpful stuff!
i think i remember when linus got his hands on one of the first xl-atx boards and was all excited, then again i can't remember exactly
Amazing video helped me out didn't know what size mine was haha
I got a H81m motherboard, and it is an odd size one, at first I though it is standard micro Atx board, but then I realize it is slightly shorter than mAtx board in both height and length, has 2 ram slot instead of 4, kinda between mATX and MITX board.
According to Asus, it is uAtx board, note that it is not the micro sign, just a single "u"
Great job, like it
If memory serves (and it usually does) the ATX sized motherboards are the same size as the original IBM PC-XT Motherboards. I built more machines of that form factor than I care to count having worked for 3 different clone manufacturers "back in the day" I'm kinda surprised that someone doesn't resurrect the original PC-AT sized motherboards with additional slots (or greater slot spacing) to accommodate the massive number of double slot cards.
Thanks for the video it really helped!
For someone that is currently learning and a total dummies, I really hope that you'd put a in-video captions or an actual subtitle for people with auditory-based learning problem and more of a visual-learner. My head is experiencing overheating with the auto-generated cc alone. This is so hard for me.

Some of those pictures are so ooooold.
8 years ago you can fit multiple modern high end cards on an ATX mobo now a days you'd be lucky if your ATX case has enough clearance for a 4080
This was really helpfull.. thanks !
Great video. Thanks Linus! *thumbs up*
Hey Linus
When you showed the eATX board being 330mm wide you had an standard ATX board on the screen with a dimension of 244mm. This was at 4:05 into the video.
I only sya this as I have never seen an eATX board and was interested in the graphic.
Linus, your ideal board, the Asus P9X79E-WS, is a CEB form factor. Thanks to you this board is now the base of my new CAD station. Only a handful of cases say that they support this and the other obscure form factors.
Since the CEB is based on a mix of ATX and EEB form factors could you install a CEB board in an ATX case like the Corsair 750D or the NZXT 820?
This was helpful. THX
thank you im learning some stuff from you linus :3
