Building my first PC right now and this video was extremely helpful. I have my Case, and decided on my CPU, but have been struggling to figure out what motherboard I wanted. Thanks Paul! Got a happy new subscriber from me 😁
@Ignatius David Partogi I got an x570 Taichi for my 3600. I don't upgrade platform very often, and want to be able to support whatever the highest end chip ends up (4950x or what have you) while still being able to overclock. Also. It was pretty, and I am vain.
I'm weirdly old school but the motherboard is the first component I pick and build the system around that. Sure I'll have a general idea of the system I want to build (AMD ryzen, nvidia gpu, etc) but when it comes down to the actual manufacture and model, the motherboard is first and then I pick what is compatible / tested with that. The biggest issue isn't cpu and case. Its memory. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at someone's misbehaving pc only to discover they are using ram that hasn't been certified with their motherboard.
When I build my parent's PC had to pick a case that would look nice since it would be more visible, it was on the ground floor. But personal computer always mobo/cpu first.
It depends on what kind of build. It's i'm going ITX. I always pick the case first. Since it's the most restrictive build type. With ITX upgradability is usually limited to what case you have. For mATX or ATX builds the case is less important.
0:03 Anybody else notice the middle mobo is upside down? Is this a custom set up? Lol. Then magically goes right side up at 2:15 Then disappears at 6:27 wow that's "Excellent!"
This bothered me during the whole video at first i thought he was having a balancing issue then when it flipped it,i was like ok fine. Then it disappeared and I'm screaming AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT THE RULES ANYMORE!

I agree that mATX is overlooked. It is great format actually, if you don't do multiple GPUs for mining or otherwise, why would you need more slots? There is extra slot or two to accommodate occasional capture card, storage/USB controller or sound card, other than that, everything else is on motherboard and good enough for normal PC stuff

I feel like you missed a very important part of choosing a motherboard - connectivity options. For many people, 6 USB ports might not be enough, especially if one of them is Type-C. Some keyboards nowadays need two USB ports, some headsets need one, a USB soundcard or an audio interface need one. Add a webcam, a printer, a capture card, an external hard drive - and you might get overrun by things that need a USB port. Sure, those can be added via PCIe cards, but this is often more expensive than just buying a board with more ports and can lead to weird compatibility issues, especially with devices that fully utilize high-speed ports' bandwidth (webcams, capture cards and VR equipment are the worst offenders). M.2 slots often get too little attention. Some people might take advantage of multiple and/or high bandwidth LAN. Thunderbolt 3 is also is incredibly useful. All of this helps to show why the crowd favorite B450 Tomahawk is hugely overrated. To me, rather pricey an ATX board with 6 USB ports and 1 M.2 slot is a joke. Its mATX sister B450 Mortar is not only cheaper, but has 8 USB ports and 2 M.2 slots, yet nobody recommends it.
Hard agree on the Mortar MAX, the tomahawk has no useful advantages over the mortar. SLI and Crossfire are dead, so mATX should be just as if not more relevant than ATX, yet it's the other way around strangely.
A cheap USB hub easily solves the issue of not enough USB ports, but he does also mention that different motherboards will have fewer USB or sata ports briefly at 9:00. I'd assume M.2 slots would also fall under this umbrella when looking at what connectivity options a motherboard has. The Tomahawk is often recommended over the Mortar because it's an ATX board, which will give you more room to work with, and also because the VRM is better for people interested in overclocking. Not many people use more than one M.2, and as mentioned before USB ports aren't really a deciding factor for most people.
I've been watching your videos as I'm planning my first build and I have to say that this and your CPU buyers guide video have been two of my favorite so far. There are thousands of how to build and part picker videos but I would love to see more of these multi level deep dives on all PC components. Hopefully the rest are coming soon! Thanks for the easy to watch and easy to understand video!
Hey Paul, just wanted to say I really loved this video and the amount of information provided was really well done. You should totally make videos like this for the other various parts of a PC! This info helped me understand the motherboard a lot better as well as gave me great insight in what to look for when shopping.
Excellent video, clear and informative, useful for both the the beginners and this experienced engineer. (I designed and built my first computer 58 years ago at 13. Most of my design experience has been unrelated to PCs, dedicated realtime control designs the Pegasus telemetry and guidance board. It's been 30 years since I last built a Windows PC from parts, so I don't keep up with it until I need it.) This video strikes a near perfect balance, avoiding both the dumbed-down ditch one one side and the assuming-they-already-know-the-jargon ditch on the other. Thanks, great job.
Another excellent video! I think one item you should consider when selecting a motherboard is which cooling option(s) you're going to use, the number of fan headers could limit your options.
You good at what you do. Some people talk to much with to much info and poor explanation. But you talk and deliver everything thanks man love the channel.
I just built my first pc at 67 years of age. MSI b450 tomahawk MAX… so now I am going to learn to fly (in a sim)… You and Kyle and Jay and Linus gave my an education.. (I did my first landing without a crash today). Thanks for all your videos.. now my adult kids don’t laugh at me so hard anymore… (they are engineers and educators). But I taught myself keyboards and guitar and wrote some music got published, formed a band, got on TV, and radio, made money, hung around rock stars.. Do want you love, love what you do. And be kind doing it
At least they didn't mislead audience and buyers. If things go as what AMD planned and no Zen 3+++ refreshes, b550 will only be supporting 4000 series CPUs... Which is basically Kabylake but worse because Kabylake chipsets at least support Skylake CPUs while b550 doesn't support 3000 series and below. That's why you never should've bought a board and plan for upgrades. Buy whatever is best now and right for your current CPU.
@@cunnyman b550 does support 3000 series chips but not the 2000 series cpu's. Will need to use b550 for 4000 series because b350, x370, b450 and x470 won't be supported for them.
Alan Morgan Here, you just do a nerdy building hobby, need the upgrades??? Howny build you did this year? I just keep the 6900k build for ever, only replaced the RTX card 2 years ago, still the best there is.New intel 10 gen would only do 20% better, not worth it now!

Thank you very much.
I always find it quite irritating that "CMOS" ended up being a common naming for the BIOS settings memory. As most of you surely know, "CMOS" originally comes from "complementary metal oxide semiconductor" which is a type of manufacturing process for transistors in ICs.

Very good to know info...starting with 'everyone is supposed to know this' level 1, through to 'straight to the point and informative' level 2 & 3. Thanks
The motherboard is THE HARDEST component to replace, so choose wisely. I have never regretted "overbuying" a motherboard, but I have bought a few lower end boards to save a few dollars and later regretted that choice.
The amazing Lian Li 011 Dynamic has 1 major flaw, it can't support some 140mm tall air coolers. As you imply you can get to the end of your dreambuild checklist and screw up this critical component.
Paul!! Your hardware channel Rocks!! Thank you for your in-your-face information that is so lacking I feel on the web!! Pulling back the curtain and showing the real deal is soooo sweet!! Thanks!
The only PC store I know of where I could do a level 3 analysis when building a system was the late NCIX. They didn't just have a builder page with preset collections of parts like every other site, they let me browse their entire warehouse inventory, check detailed specs of every part, and pick and choose components as I saw fit. They gave me a huge selection, but in the process I had to learn and pay attention to every technical aspect not normally in the perview of customers, from parts compatibility, to fan headers, RAM timings, pricing, to brand RMA rates among other things.
When I talk about this stuff just like Paul is doing here my wife always rolls her eyes and I lose her attention....can't figure out why, lol! Thanks Paul and keep up the great content.
9:05 that table could be mildly confusing to a beginner having AMD chipset specs and chipsets yet having a Z490 at the top in place of say X570? Just a weird thing love the video though!
I think maybe that was mislabeled and was in fact supposed to be X570; I haven't looked up the specs but considering it's marked "Yes" as having Precision Boost Overdrive, I think that's the case.
The117thCon First build, just do some RTX card on intel, if you got skilled you can do any weirdo build you need! why you still love this beginner content? you never did a build yourself?
Carl Kitchen Level 4 is for museum people only? On PS only museum! So weirdo that everybody is trashing it? hold on all your 1999 gear for ever! Voodoo days...... You own any remastered PC title? or you meant remastered to run on PS5 now? PC never need that...it runs old titles!
My current PC (for posterity: it's January 2021) is a 2010-ish AMD Phenom II 1055, no overclocking, tons of extra underpowered fans for low noise but good airflow. And everything still runs after a decade. I'm upgrading as certain things are becoming sluggish, but all is still good. Choosing good components makes for a machine that can live for a long time and what used to be your top gaming box can live happily as an email and webbrowsing machine for wife & kids. :)
I'm at level 0. Level I'm broke and just live vicariously through youtubers having cool shit. I constantly build PCs in my mind. I'm like, "Hell yea! This mother board, this cpu, xyz graphics card." I have an absolute monster of a PC in my own head canon.

Your not the only on , I built 2 PCs with b450 motherboards. One was for a friend and the other was for my gaming PC. I plan to keep the CPU for at least 5years unless the board or CPU die. Had my 3570k for 7 years , still work fine. But it was time for an upgrade. If you don't need pcie gen 4 your b450 will be sufficient enough.

@Ignatius David Partogi I got an x570 Taichi for my 3600. I don't upgrade platform very often, and want to be able to support whatever the highest end chip ends up (4950x or what have you) while still being able to overclock.

Buildzoid
He is not a level, just a nerdy hobby, you never need those skills, soldering????
Just find a board, don't make it yourself!!!!!!
I always pick cpu and motherboard before picking a case.
When I build my parent's PC had to pick a case that would look nice since it would be more visible, it was on the ground floor. But personal computer always mobo/cpu first.
case is a non issue, too personal
lucas rem true dat!
Yup! That's how I do it
It depends on what kind of build. It's i'm going ITX. I always pick the case first. Since it's the most restrictive build type. With ITX upgradability is usually limited to what case you have. For mATX or ATX builds the case is less important.
I’ve built my i7 920 PC 10 years ago !!! It’s time to upgrade !
Maybe just get a whole new system or you really love your case & power supply and keep those?!
0:03 Anybody else notice the middle mobo is upside down? Is this a custom set up? Lol. Then magically goes right side up at 2:15 Then disappears at 6:27 wow that's "Excellent!"
Time travel is the only explanation
This bothered me during the whole video at first i thought he was having a balancing issue then when it flipped it,i was like ok fine. Then it disappeared and I'm screaming AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT THE RULES ANYMORE!
@@Painfully_Punny I have Siverstone and Riotoro cases that have a inverted layout. Maybe they travel too far in the future to get the first good AMD chip, Ryzen 1800x and had to travel back to get a b350/450 since b550 did not support zen1.
So if the mobo is inverted would it use a DWV CPU?

I agree that mATX is overlooked. It is great format actually, if you don't do multiple GPUs for mining or otherwise, why would you need more slots? There is extra slot or two to accommodate occasional capture card, storage/USB controller or sound card, other than that, everything else is on motherboard and good enough for normal PC stuff

@Jay _TooGoated Unsure, I just buy whatever motherboard is the cheapest XD
Well if you didn't know this, the mortar is not sold in the USA. So your entire argument is redundant.
@@miniweeddeerz1820 well if you didn't know, US is not the only country in the world
@@termiguin1 B450 doesn't do SLI at all, the chipset itself doesn't support it. Mortar still does Crossfire, so not even that is a factor

Hey it's Intel here. Just to let you know, every time the clock hits 7 you need to buy a new motherboard.
would like but 7 likes...
At least it is a promise they can keep.

Dude what’s did you end up going with?
Thank you for breaking down the CPU and compatibility similarities and differences. It makes so much sense now.
I always find it quite irritating that "CMOS" ended up being a common naming for the BIOS settings memory. As most of you surely know, "CMOS" originally comes from "complementary metal oxide semiconductor" which is a type of manufacturing process for transistors in ICs.

Level 5: does it have rgb? (like some i've seen with led strips).
Pffff, no.
Xtreme, it's an x570 xtreme lol

And then there's the 4th level: the elusive, mystic and forbidden level of building your own motherboard.
