+Tengu Siv what i saw online the fastest speeds came from 2133-2666 mhz on ddr4.. so most likely something like the Kingston hyperX Predator @2400 mhz CL 12 will be around the sweetspot of clockspeed and latency.. at least afaik..

+Robert Faber I would like that he at least metioned of probable compatibility issues (capacity, same parameters, and can U mix manufacturer) and rows in memory (ie. Single Sided/Double Sided memory).
No "Command Rate" timing as well :(

+Tom Is a Door if the timing is 9 for example
the ram will take 9 cycles to get the data you need
so if your ram is 1800mhz as example
      it'll take 9/1800000000 = 5 nanosecond
which is very neglictible for most pc users
hope i explained it well ..

    • @Daniel15au

Vaaas Yes, but there's four numbers (eg. "9-9-9-27"). What does each number mean?

      +Tom Is a Door
I just took a quick glance at the wiki page about "Memory Latency", which led me to CAS Latency, which led me to Random-Access Memory Hierarchy, and tbh, there's too much information in there to be put on a single TechQuickie video if you begin to scratch the surface and add technical terms like CAS/CL, Trcd, Tras... that will need to be defined by other technical terms that will need to be defined by other technical terms... The pit is very deep. I believe they went deep enough to not drown themselves.
For more information : RAM timing is expressed in a series of numbers (like 8-8-8-24) which each represents a number of clock cycles to complete a specific task associated to RAM manipulation. The absolute latency in nanoseconds is calculated both with these timings, and the actual RAM frequency, which is half of what is usually announced, because marketing likes big numbers and Double Data Rate doubles the speed ! So take a 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 stick (like the ones I have in my rig, which are Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB Low-profile for my SFF rig), understand it's a DDR stick so it's actually a 800MHz stick, then calculate that clock ticks occur once every 1.25ns, so the absolute latency of my RAM for these timings is 8*1.25 = 10, 10, 10 and 24*1.25 = 30, in nanoseconds.
So yeah, a DDR3-1600 8-8-8-24 is quite good, but a DDR3-2333 with 9-9-9-27 timings will be better because of the far higher clock speed. It's a result of two variables. Careful though, not every motherboard will support faster RAM !

      +Daniel Lo Nigro (Daniel15)
1st number >> CL: CAS Latency. The time it takes between a command having been sent to the memory and when it begins to reply to it. It is the time it takes between the processor asking for some data from the memory and then returning it.
2nd number >> tRCD: RAS to CAS Delay. The time it takes between the activation of the line (RAS) and the column (CAS) where the data are stored in the matrix.
3rd number >> tRP: RAS Precharge. The time it takes between disabling the access to a line of data and the beginning of the access to another line of data.
tRAS: Active to Precharge Delay. How long the memory has to wait until the next access to the memory can be initiated.
4th number >> CMD: Command Rate. The time it takes between the memory chip having been activated and when the first command may be sent to the memory. Sometimes this value is not announced. It usually is T1 (1 clock cycle) or T2 (2 clock cycles).
the most important one is the 1st one (latency) ..

Digital Foundry (partially) disproved this. In CPU bound scenarios in gaming, faster RAM can definitely increase your minimums. Not an excuse to buy the most expensive stuff out there, but springing for a tier or 2 higher could be worth it depending on price.

    • @MrMleczkp
      @MrMleczkp 8 лет назад

+DrearierSpider1 the problem with that is you need oc board to use faster than standard ram. And costs are just rising 2x as much for board a little more for ram and if you have z board already then it would be shame to not buy k processor then additional cooler.... That's how i come to conclusion, screw that, and bought i7 6700 (none k) h110 board and 16gb of standard 2133mhz 14cl memory for my gaming pc.

Or perhaps we should remove locks from doors since homes are broken into every 24 seconds. This liberal mindset is a danger to America. Since people break the law and disobey, your logic is to eliminate the barriers and laws rather than punish the criminals. Do you not see what foolish and irresponsible reasoning that is? wanted to mention that some games do benefit from faster ram, where other components are not the bottleneck.
there was actually an interesting article put out regarding how memory speed actually had a direct effect on the minimum fps for Fallout 4, again, where the ram itself was the only bottleneck (they were using haswell-e and a titan X for benching)
Another way faster memory can benefit SOME games, like Skyrim or Fallout, is by using 3rd party software (such as ENBoost) that forces a portion of the system memory to be used as a pre-cache/overflow for the VRAM

  • @TheosThoughts

I am a general artist (photography, drawing, guitar/singing/songwriting, woodworking) so I may dabble with some artsy apps later, but none too serious. However, the one I definitely plan on using most is Garage Band or possibly even Logic Pro X. I also plan to own my computer for 5 years. There's also always a possibility I may delve in to RAM hungry apps in the future and I'm not sure what apps may grown in RAM use down the line after updates etc... I'm struggling with whether to upgrade to 16 RAM. Do you think it's worth it in my situation?

+ try looking for the lowest latency over highest frequency. For example, a stick of ram with a clockspeed of 2666Mhz and a latency of 13Cas will give you pretty much the same performance as ram clocked at 3333MHZ with a latency of 16Cas but for a lot less money.

What you said in this video can probably be summarized in 2-3 sentences
And you even asked the question what do timings like 9-9-9-18 even mean, but then only answered the most generic thing which everyone knows that it means how many clock cycles it'll take before it executes a command. That doesnt tell me why its 4 numbers instead of one

Faster (faster speed and timings) make difference in gaming. Some games like mostly speed but for some it's about it's about both.
GTA V and Arma 3 are good examples.

I have quad channel DDR4-3000 15-15-15-35 2T 1.35V GSkill Ripjaw DIMMs. It definitely makes a noticeable difference for overclocking benchmark scores. They don't even make DDR4-3000 this tight anymore; got these nearly 2 years ago the day i7-5820K launched.

so he didn't say anything about what mhz - latency ratio we should follow? I mean, should I buy RAM with crazy high 4133 Mhz, but high 19 CL latency? Or the optimal thing is to go lower Mhz and lower latency?

+comedyman112 My advice would honestly be to look at the NCIX website and see what they are putting in their custom-built gaming PCs. It's a good general guide, and they do actually have a clue about what they're doing. They're sticking 2400- to 2666-MHz sticks in those things, give-or-take.
The actual math behind figuring-out what timings and clock speeds combined work-out to better memory performance can get complicated fast, and when you start having to consider the CPU and the motherboard, the hardware configuration might not be able to support the timings or clock speeds of the RAM, there might be other limitations like the RAM not actually performing to the spec quite as it should...I'll just say it's way, way, way more of a headache than it's worth. Linus' advice is good in this. Get as much as you need (8GB is enough for gaming now, though if you're going to do something like run Skyrim or Fallout 4 with 200-300 mods, I'd say go for 16GB) at a reasonable price and speed that's on-par with what's common at the time.

I was struggling to get my 3600mhz ram to run at anything faster than 2133. I was having horrible brush lag in photoshop (Photoshop is a ram hog.) with huge document sizes. People kept telling me i was wasting my time fast ram doesn't matter. I finally got it running at 3200 mhz and i can say there is significantly less brush lag.
I think in gaming the gains of fast memory aren't much to bother with but for other things there is DEFINITELY a benefit.

im happy you talk about onboard graphic (APU) using RAM as Vram but you forgot to mension that iGPU from intel also use 1.8GB ram as Vram.
you also forgot to mension that higher band speed give mostly slower timings such as 1600mhz cl5 will be at lowest 2133mhz cl8 (exept corsair who's stuck at cl9 to cl10)
and alot of memory can't handle overclock as the sold specs is already bordering the limit (those cl9 and 10 of corsair seems to overclock better ,well it should anyway with those timings)
my ddr3 2133mhz 16GB at CL8 max overclock that it can reach is 2150Mhz but limits the 4770k overclock to 4.6Ghz while setting it at 2133Mhz for ram the 4770k can get 4.7Ghz
just an example to show that its more complicated as most people usely think.
