My own parents came from Europe during the depression. My Father from Germany my mother from Ireland. They loved this great nation from the moment they came and made it obvious to me at a very early age. After graduating high school I joined the Air Force. Four years active duty. I originally wanted to make a career in the Air Force but early marriage and a new born changed that. Instead I spent thirty years in law enforcement, twenty with NYCPD and ten with the State of Florida DBPR. If you walked in my home at this moment you would see on one wall a photo of a man, with his suit jacket hanging over his left arm and his right arm leaning against the VIETNAM WALL MEMORIAL. I will always be proud of this Great Nation and of all those who also had the honor of serving. For what it is worth I am 77 yrs of age and consider it an honor always to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

The American Flag and the National Anthem have always been significant to the American Way and deserve to be saluted and treated with respect. I am proud to be an American and Thank God I was born in this country of Freedom. If you don't agree, it's time for you to visit other countries so you can appreciate this one, or if you like a different one then stay there but don't disrespect this Country.

      How naive can you be?
1 year later the infamous Black Sox scandal rocked MLB, hearings were held in Congress and white Sox players were called in to testify about the corruption and involvement of gambling gangsters (Chicago!) in professional sporting events.
Finally congress installed the Honorable Judge "Mountain" Landis as baseballs first commissioner for the purpose of repairing the publics confidence in fair games wo interference from owners and players alike.
Comiskey, was a fraud, a reprobate, greedy and opportunistic Capitalist.
Today, baseball has done away with its commissioner and doesn't respect the need for establishing and maintaining the integrity of the game; inspite of the fact that it's no longer mere thousands of $, but multiple millions of $.
      Don't be naive!

During the Persian Gulf War, the Chicago Stadium hosted the NHL All Star Game. A lot of emotion in the crowd and support for our Troops. The Stadium had an old pipe organ- the pipes ran into the ceiling. I believe Wayne Messmer sang the National Anthem. The crowd cheered thunderously. Since that game, Blackhawk fans have cheered during the National Anthem, a tradition carried to the United Center and on to today.

  • @LarryRuane
    @LarryRuane 4 года назад +7

This video is inaccurate in saying that playing of the National Anthem was a way to counter the strong anti-German immigrant sentiment of the time. It was PART of that sentiment. We were at war with Germany, and the National Anthem was promoted to bring patriotic fervor to the war effort. You have to remember that before US involvement in that war, the vast majority of Americans strongly opposed US involvement. Woodrow Wilson's re-election campaign slogan was "He kept us out of war." So, if anything, playing the National Anthem before baseball games worsened the persecution of German immigrants.

Athletics is rarely an intellectual endeavor. As a group, athletes tend to follow others in anything other than physical activities. Putting that as a foundation to this story helps to explain why this practice unfolded. It happened organically. Not a planned marketing ploy, rather a genuine expression of positive emotion. Not a defiant and angry challenge to the world, but a way of saying thank you for the good fortune of being an American. It has taken years for this to be challenged. The wrong approach to solving an unrelated problem. It has taken a couple of years for society to return to a positive practice of saying thank you. This is not to dismiss the protesters. Unfortunately they lost their message by tearing down a positive to highlight another problem. They have the right to protest, but they lost the battle for societies sympathy. Not unexpected given their myopic vision of what life is about. They should pick another strategy and truly try to solve the other problem, not tear down something that will remain forever.

The history story is correct... but the statement @ 1:44 in the video that "some people believe that national pride itself is hurtful" when showing Colin Kaepernick is misleading or incorrect. The movement to kneel during the National Anthem is clearly stated "to call attention to the issues of racial inequality and police brutality."
Here's Colin's description of his reasoning on how to approach this issue in a respectful and constructive manner:
"After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, ... during the anthem, as a peaceful protest," said Reid. "We chose to kneel because it's a respectful gesture. I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy."[21]
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._national_anthem_protests_(2016%E2%80%93present)#:~:text=Kaepernick%20and%20his%2049ers%20teammate,racial%20inequality%20and%20police%20brutality.
If you believe in what makes America great "Truth, Justice and the American Way"... the next time you see a black man at half-mast, please consider the following:
For the 367 death penalty inmates exonerated by DNA evidence, the demographics show a much higher per capita false conviction rate for black men:
    225 (61%) African American
    110 (30%) Caucasian

Even aside from the incorrect history, at many levels, it just doesn't make sense. Why don't we play the National Anthem before the start of every play, or every movie? There are any number of other public gatherings -- why not at all of them? Maybe every hour on the hour, the National Anthem should be played in every store across the country, and the shoppers will stop and stand with their hands over the hearts. Crazy? Why? Why is that any crazier than before every sporting event? The only reason it seems different is that it's not already being done. People have a very strong status-quo bias. They think that the way things are done is the way they should be done.

the black athletes who took a knee during the national anthem where showing respect for this nation and to the people who suffer
because of police brutality in this country. If they werent patriotic they would’ve made rude gestures or made it clear .
Kneeling is like praying. They protest a very serious problem.
the right wing likes shift the subject to what and where it’s proper to protest and completely
    ignore the problem .
they draw the focus away from what they are kneeling for.
it shows no compassion or understanding of what our black citizens are
going through. It is more Patriotic to do as they did that to just obey orders and proper procedure,
in the end, their brainwashed followers think that it is politics and that they should vote for Trump.
