Yes, if you're looking for a brand new 992 or something to flip, or something to collect, then this is top of the tree in 2024. However the price !! He's called it out correctly - thank you Jay. We know why Porsche justify it (if they sold it for less, someone would flip it for more) and it is a VERY good car. Had a late ‘78 model ‘79 911SC for 12 magnificent years, from ‘94 till ‘06, took us all across Europe and back multiple times (live in NL), selling it was the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my life. North American 992 3RS owner here. I had a go in the ST recently and definitely agree it's a hell of a car but not at the very high market price. None of it affects me though. Its not my stuff and not my money.
Don’t think your approach to use is the concern, it’s that Porsche has gone from the “enthusiast” brand to the “elite” brand with its pricing and more luxury focused offerings. Then you need to be “chosen” as worthy of an allocation based on spending history. And the final hurdle is the ADM if your are not lucky to avoid that. And I won’t even get into those that flip them for profit.
@@gbarton800 I can get the frustration, but I think on the whole enthusiast brands cannot exist in modern automotive landscape, or at least without major volumes within the broader brand like TRD/GR with Toyota. Hello there! The ST does use a softer suspension setup. In fact Porsche says that they now use these spring rates on the face lift .2 GT3, apparently you don’t lose any performance for the ride benefit. At least according to the Porsche gods.
The ST softer suspension comes from software. While the st uses a slower steering rack, no rear steering and slightly different sway bars the real difference comes in the suspension software. Already in the forums people have figured out how to put the ST software on the regular 992 GT3 and they love it
It is such a shame that ill-informed YTers presume to know who buys these cars. They extrapolate from a small data set and make erroneous conclusions. I know so many true enthusiasts who have bought one of these - not to collect - but to drive. Yes, some do “play the game”, but many go to “proper” owners. I am lucky enough to be one of those, who has spent more than a sensible proportion of my earnings pursuing my dream of driving Porsche’s finest cars - on road and track - for over 25 years. And I am far from alone. BTW, whoever insured their S/T for £475k is getting it massively wrong - I know of a delivery mileage car sold for under £400k. Once again YTer misinformation and for the enthusiast it’s never about the value, it’s about the driving experience. And let me end with the two other points. Roll cage is NOT standard fit (it is an option). And steering is excellent - as much as I think Porsche do the most natural rear wheel steering systems, it’s notable that without it the S/T is just that bit more feelsome, particularly between turn in and apex.
I don't think I could be bothered with any of these new Porches even if I could afford one, which I can't. Mat Watson trading in his practically new GT3RS to get one of these sort of sums up the life lots of them will have. You can have a lot of fun in a far far cheaper car.
I think the Porsche ethos has changed considerably over the past 20-30 years, not necessarily for the better. The 911s of the 70s and 80s were still relatively upmarket, and yet they more-so appealed to the common man. If you were on a moderate salary and wanted a dependable and yet fun weekend car, the 911 was the obvious choice - they were expensive back then, but comparatively offered a better driving experience for the price than the likes of cars like the Ferrari 308 (which had all the looks of a quasi-supercar, but definitely didn't have the performance of one). Nowadays I think it's very much the antithesis - there are many sports cars that offer similar driving pleasure and performance for a quarter of the price of a 911. These newer collector-oriented 911s are destined to sit in air-conditioned garages, not be driven. They only appeal to snobs, not to car enthusiasts.
Jays really been growing on me .. feel like he’s really established himself over the past 12 months with better and better honest content. This is a great review (I’m a 991.2 GT3 owner) and I’m sick of all the so called petrol heads who are really just buying in for investment and relevance. Subbed
Not so much as a step down as too much (of everything). I could have bought a nearly new GTS but it is too much of everything and I didn’t think I’d use it much. Bought a special 996 instead.
I paid $145,000 for my 18 GT3. What’s unfortunate for Porsche there are so many other cars in that price range that’s are better and faster . The Huracan Technica. The Ferrari 296 GTB and number of McLarens. I got tired of Porsches games and move over to Lamborghini. And couldn’t be happier
Absolutely correct analysis but Porsche will not listen to it. They are very aware that they build exactly one sports car in high public demand and that is the 911. The 911 is Porsche's identity. With these countless limited editions and regular engine variants they are faking a big model portfolio they in fact don't have, they are only selling the same car again and again. It's a great car, especially the 992 model, granted, but it's a very obvious cheap trick. And since they saw how popular their GT3 RS versions are, they want to rip off the collector market with artificial limitations that bring also the adventurers and gamblers to the table. It's not serious business and people should avoid it. If you want to own and drive a 911, fine, it's technically a great decision for any petrolhead. But stick to the base model then, it's providing at least 90% of what a 911 can deliver and its price tag is already exaggerated enough compared to its performance.
I have an ST, ordered it new at MSRP and actually drive it a lot. Picked it up in June. I have owned pretty much all the GT cars and this one is by the far the most enjoyable. It is the perfect combo of older school feels/sensations but still has the modern things we all reluctantly hate to admit we like in modern cars: larger screens, internet radios, automatic GPS nose lift, ect ect. So for someone like me it’s an absolute win win. Would I pay a $200k ADM for one? Absolutely not, but not because I think the car isn’t worth it, but more because it would then cause me to worry about the value of the car and would limit me from driving it often to keep the miles down. At MSRP however I am letting it rip!
What I love about Jay and his channel: he calls it like he sees it! No B.S. "Don't be dicks Porsche" is maybe the best quote on YT for 2024! So true. Been buying and selling 911's the past 15yrs and it has been frustrating to see the costs now to buy any 911. Thanks for the review ✌
Nice review James. Agreed Porsche should make as many people want. Sensible cash for one of these would go on a 992.2 Touring, same dampers etc. In fact you get Litchfield to tune 992.1 GT3 dampers to S/T spec.
One of the big benefits of borrowing cars from viewers instead of press cars is that Jay can speak his mind without damaging his relationship with brands who provide him with cars. "Dont be dicks" was priceless.
The best part of the whole video was how enamoured he was with the 997 GT3, because that car is really very affordable, dam near as rare (2256 vs 1963 units) and way more 911-esque than the larger, more technology-laden 992.
“Just build the damn things in the quantity that allows anyone that wants one to have one” - This is absolutely totally right. Porsche has stuck its nose in the air for long enough. Just build the cars and let the customers decide.
I’m sorry, I agree with you usually Jay Emm, but I don’t think you understand the market. Your earlier video that overs were dead hasn’t aged well… the reason that this car commands the prices it does has so many factors, not least of which is that there is no alternative for this experience elsewhere in the market outside of the Gordon Murray T50/T33 (500+hp NA, manual, lightweight) for $2M+ and in that context, the S/T is a RELATIVE (keyword) bargain. And to compare it to a base spec GT3 RS price isn’t comparing apples to apples, add the Weissach package, which the S/T inherits many of its parts from, and the GT3 RS is actually $300 USD MORE expensive. The reason that the 911R shot up to $1M was because it was widely considered to be the LAST EVER manual GT Porsche. Had that held true, then the prices would have likely held, again because there is no substitute on the market for that experience. Ferrari and Lamborghini haven’t made a manual in over a decade. EVERY Lamborghini is now a HYBRID 😢 and the F80 is a hybrid turbocharged V6. You have to put the value in the context of the market as a whole, and to add context to the S/T’s value proposition, Porsche GT Division boss Andy Preuninger in a recent interview with Autocar made the bold statement that Euro 7 would spell the end for the pure-ICE NA 4.0L engine, and they will be forced to go Turbocharged or Hybrid after 2026. That means the S/T and the 992.2 GT3 are the LAST (either) naturally aspirated GT cars, OR the LAST manual GT cars (Porsche’s implementation of hybrid precluded using a manual). I believe the S/T will be a $1M+ car in a decade or so, and I put my $$ where my mouth is and exhausted my life’s savings for an S/T because I feel that strongly about it. Jay Emm, you’re an amazing car reviewer, and I value your opinion on the driving experience, but I think you’re off the mark on this particular cars value proposition and future value. My 2cents/pence 😅
250k? I'll take it! You can't buy an S/T in the States without first buying two Taycans and a Macan, then if they give you an allocation you'll pay 220k over list price.
How nice to find a brand new JayEmm video today (a rare day off) on the mighty ST having recently seen Mat Watson's speccing video - Happy Christmas back to you 👍
I do love google translate - I put this into it:- porschedobblecontcorruption (as fake German to explain how the UK give my mates the allocation works) - it translates (yes it seriously does) as Porsche 911 Turbo... Try it.
As for what they are doing with the models tinkering about its clearly to mess up the profiteering speculative prfit gouging types....its actually very smart.......especially in keeping them relatively affordable....
A base 992 Carrera in poverty spec is slightly under €200,000 here in Ireland. A basic Turbo is €310,000. Can't imagine what a spec'd S/T would be here.
Considering the struggles that government policy wonks are causing car manufacturers, in Europe especially, ive very little issue with makers raking it in from wealthy buyers where possible (though i would prefer it if politicians just sodded off.)
Enjoyed the video, and I agree on the 911 variant train. Waiting for your spyder rs review. It’s direct wired to your adrenal gland. Don’t miss it. Far more special car, imo.
The 997 GT3 was mentioned in this video, but what is usually considered the best 911? I was able to take a 992 Turbo S around Silverstone last week. Very, very capable on a wet track and lots of fun. In the usual Porsche way, the enjoyment came from the speed and its ability. If I was to buy one, I would hope for something that thrills and feels like an event each time I ise it.
If I had that kind of money I'd buy either an F12, 812 or 12 Cylinder from Fezza. I'd love a 997 GT3 though at the money they go for.. that's a perfect car.
I think the ST is a great collector's car for 911 aficionados, but if you want to buy one to drive, get a 911 GT3 Touring which is about 90% ST and half the price.
I love the look of the car, I think it's probably the best looking 911, that's just my opinion. And then consider I absolutely detest white rims and the fact it looks like it's ready to go to the paint shop, but apart from the price it's a really cool piece of kit.
To my eyes they've overstretched the 911 into a car that's just a bit too bloated and a bit 'over specced' and underfinished. I think with the evolution of the watercooled 911 since the 996 they managed something very impressive with the 997 but since then they've pushed the bigger, more technical, more this, more that, too far. And similtaneously trying to play the speculator game... I agree if you're after a watercooled era 911, when you get to the 997, stop rolling the dice. Stick!
Hi JayEmm, I’m curious as to where these these test drives takes place. Looks a lot like the North East of Scotland.? Can you share general area without being specific.?

Bought a special 996 instead.
That 997 GT3 really is looking like a bargain. Yes it's slower, but I wouldn't call it particularly slow.
A pristine 997 GT3 is not that far off in price from the S/T.
@@jeebus2121 They're about £150K less.
@@EvoraGT430Lol
A great video just in time for the holidays! Thanks James, have a great break across the festive season. 👍🏼
Great, honest review James. How does this compare to the manual 991.2 GT3 you drove? How about the 991.2 gt3 vs the 997 gt3/gt3rs? Thanks!
First time to JayEmm.. refreshing to have an unvarnished authentic POV. Many thanks.
They are very serious. And don't call me Shirley.
Really good review Jay very honest clear. Thanks for sharing.
Easy one to script … quick intro, opening credits, yep it’s perfect, close credits. Job done
16:56 - the black window looks strange to me
I was thinking the same.
Thanks James , Merry Christmas
The best part of the whole video was how enamoured he was with the 997 GT3, because that car is really very affordable, dam near as rare (2256 vs 1963 units) and way more 911-esque than the larger, more technology-laden 992.
Not in that dull 'nearly grey'.
Jay, you're having the best month of content ever! I hope you're earning what you're worth because this channel is fantastic!
Porsche using ST is like Ferrari using VXR, when model letters are so well known to another brand just find something else
I can't help call it the porsche focus ST
Very surprising, or rather not at all, that the 997.1 is as good or better. Serves my long lived hypothesis that the best cars have already been made.
Nice plug for your watch!! Well done!
100% spot on Jay.
18:20 german build quality and reliability...just a myth. Great review as always.
Another great, honest video 👍🏻
The decades old tradition of 'The last 911 is better than the current one' shows no signs of stopping yet!
“Just build the damn things in the quantity that allows anyone that wants one to have one” - This is absolutely totally right. Porsche has stuck its nose in the air for long enough. Just build the cars and let the customers decide.
You're getting it cheap. Try 911 prices in Australia if you wanna have a laugh.
Let me guess? James hates it and would sooner have a 997 or 996. When every other reviewer loves it.
Porsche likes to call the clock a chronograph because that's what a clock with stop watch functionality is. Marketing also of course but still.
I see you acquired the matching dogtooth check Heritage shirt for the review. Very nice 👌🏼
Smooth segway into the watch James...very nice watch too😎
I just want a 911T with 4.0 cayman gts motor
Exactly. Base model with an NA engine and manual gearbox. Bring back the clubsport.
@Szlasa light as possible with maximum experience. Chasing numbers that look good on paper and sound good in marketing is a fools errand
Love the shirt matching with the interior Jay 😂
I like the statment about the 997 GT3!
Funny. The hatch switch assembly routinely pops up on my car which agreed is not very Porsche
250k? I'll take it! You can't buy an S/T in the States without first buying two Taycans and a Macan, then if they give you an allocation you'll pay 220k over list price.
Refreshing reviews compared to most of the other car “influencers” currently all ditching their GT3RS dream cars 😅. Thanks 🙏
I own a new Porsche 911 T, though without the "S"...which is enough for me. Quite happy with it I must say.
And your shirt automatically is color matched to the interior.
I've been patiently awaiting for your take on this, somehow I knew you would hate it lol
Try it.
The reference in the thumbnail is movie gold. They don't make them like that anymore!
It's absolutely beautiful. But for that money, I'd be looking at the high end resto-mod scene personally
"Porsche don't be dicks."
Truer words never fell on deafer ears.
Ah yes. Another porsche you can't buy.
Porsche are disappearing up the Ferrari arse of marketing
As for what they are doing with the models tinkering about its clearly to mess up the profiteering speculative prfit gouging types....its actually very smart.......especially in keeping them relatively affordable....
im all for cars that place emotions and driving dynamics first .... There is no need for ever faster cars you can't use the potential on public roads.
Great video, honest and true ❤❤❤❤❤
Enjoyed the video, and I agree on the 911 variant train.
Waiting for your spyder rs review. It’s direct wired to your adrenal gland. Don’t miss it. Far more special car, imo.
Very timely given Matt Watson’s video the other day.
Matt understands what Porsches are now; just an investment instrument
@@jackassrower he’s lost all credibility with me. Far prefer the content on this channel anyway!
That Nove plug was absolutely shameless 😂
I love it!
Great review although I believe most people selling the gt3rs for 250k got them at list price
Unlimited numbers of limited editions. People rave about how good they drive and...they park them. Still very profitable I guess.
This provides an insight into the 992 Speedster.
Playing silly games is part of the fun with this model!
11:35 I'm sorry? Yes you bloody well do, owning 3 dinos and 2 Mondials to be able to buy them
Wow , tomorrow Porsche announces the STR. 😂😂
Only 100-300% markup in the USA market. Thanks Porsche for allowing dealers to do this.
Top class again James … a Porsche nuts dream
Hey, it’s not the GT3RS bonnet, it’s the GT3
👍
They all look the same to me... a VW beetle thats been squashed 😂
That's all very well, James, but do you like the Beatles....the world needs to know
He does I remember him saying he really hates his
The 997 GT3 was mentioned in this video, but what is usually considered the best 911?
I was able to take a 992 Turbo S around Silverstone last week. Very, very capable on a wet track and lots of fun. In the usual Porsche way, the enjoyment came from the speed and its ability. If I was to buy one, I would hope for something that thrills and feels like an event each time I ise it.
Nice collectible. Not at all usable or anything else they might have intended but it'll certainly be a wise investment.
Ferrari and Lamborghini have stopped making manual cars, so the 992 ST is the best option if you don't want dual clutch.
Great car to say Merry Christmas with even though I doubt I’ll ever get near to owning one. Excellent review as ever
Great Review. Thanks
Stick!
Lovely car, reliable ? How many miles a year ?
Hi JayEmm, I’m curious as to where these these test drives takes place. Looks a lot like the North East of Scotland.? Can you share general area without being specific.?
Unfortunately for various reasons I do not share my test routes
@ Good policy.👍
Ambassador, you spoil us with so much pre-Chrimbo content. 😅
