Jaguar in the last eight years has made some great products and was a better value than Range Rover. With better performance for your money. As a company, they were at the cusp of almost breaking through and getting the acceptance as one of the German manufacturers. But sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. I’ve had an F type and loved it. I also have an F Pace S and it has been a great vehicle.
I daily drive a 2014 XF S V6 twin turbo diesel sportbrake and it’s superb, reliability is always a concern and repair bills aren’t great but the way it looks, drives, economy and equipment can’t be beaten for the price!

And how elastic it is, like 50-100 with 2/3 throttle: effortless, that's the word.
Those speeds in Australia would mean loss of licence and a nice little meeting with a magistrate. Where I live the speed limits were lowered to 80 from 100 across a wide area.
@PalladioAdvisers I really enjoyed mine. Superb driving qualities and comfort. Shame that cheap looking dashboard. This was tho only reason why I have replaced it. I would have loved to get a facelift XF with fhe 3.0v6 diesel. I would have bought it in a heart bit.
I had both generations of the XF as V6. The second generation drove significantly better and also had better long-term quality. But the first one seemed more lovingly made, especially in the interior. I think the second generation only became really good with the facelift. But at the same time Jaguar took out the good engines and only left the terrible Ingenium diesel in. Jaguar fed this cat and quietly poisoned it at the same time.
You're right about the interiors; those in past Jaguars were always spectacularly luxurious, if perhaps a little unsound ergonomically. The first XF continued that trend with a nice design that cleverly combined traditional vibes with modern materials and design. The last XJ was pretty good too. However, the XE, the second XF and the F-Pace had dreadfully drab interiors which were improved by the facelift you mentioned, through introducing nicer materials, but the design was still depressingly uninteresting. I'm sure they were at least partly responsible for the subsequent lack of sales.

I went down from an S-Type to an XE in 2016. £30/year VED, I've had 70mpg on a run, usually get 50mpg across multiple journeys, 0-60 in 6.2, corners well, tyres last 30k, and the only mechanical problem was the exhaust which was fixed under warranty. Not loads of space though. The self-parking is as reliable as a drunk blind monkey though, but that's not a problem.

I've had it eight years, driven it to Southern Spain and back several times, and absolutely love it. But, I live in London, it's not ULEZ compliant, and at has very nearly 200,000 miles. Therefore I'm sort of tempted by a Euro6 XF 3.0 diesel. The thing is that for that kind of money I could fix up my XJ and buy a lot of £12.50 Sadiq Khan TFL charges.
Great review. I didn't realize that the wagon (estate) version with the 3 liter gas (petrol) engine wasn't available in the UK. Makes mine even more of a unicorn I guess. The wagon looks a lot more extroverted than the sedan, and I only ended up with an XF because the wagon was so appealing. I totally agree with you on the lack of a V8 option being a real killer for the x260 XF. Aspirational brands need halo cars in each segment to get people in the door. I personally seriously considered a Lexus IS350 when I test drove an IS500 and decided it was a bit much both on price and on speed. Oh, tell the owner that Jaguar makes an aluminum shift paddle upgrade that you can swap in with just a screwdriver in 5 minutes. Best upgrade I've made on my XF.
Jay, you have taken the words right out of my mouth. they can spend all the marketing money in the world, without the "halo" model they wont sell nearly enough of the more practical models. I have been preaching this for several years now.
I have to say the 1st point you made IE a nice luxury car over a SUV is the road I went down, forgive the pun, ended up with a BMW 640d gran coupe yes the devils fuel, but it's a very nice thing for a long run.
Thanks James. Really enjoyed this and congrats to the Jaaaag's 27 year old keeper. This video was almost enough to make me forget about the woke nightmare JaGuar has now become.
If only you culture warriors had bought more Jaguars in the last 10 years instead of only remembering they existed once they did their last marketing stunt...
There is of course always exclusivity which is desirably, so when you buy German, you buy common, Jag, Alfa & Masserati, are rare & always will have a desirable feel. Moan all you want about reliability, then if you want reliable (and the germsns aren't that good) go Lexus.
@@markziff7234 seems like im not the only one, yeahhh german cars can go from 0-60 in 0.3 seconds etc etc… but english cars, old or new, they just have something that the others dont, i dont know what it is exactly
You said this perfectly, and the one thing you described the most perfectly is moaning. Yeah moaning. There is no oder way to describe that pain of miserable people driving german NPC cars mumbling about reliability just to valiadate their believes that they purchased the right car. While in reality they pray to God every morning before they start their overrated crapwagens to actually not have warning lights on.
James, I used to have a V6 diesel standard model and that was both softly sprung and dynamic, the way that a Jaguar should be. The engine was punchy and economical too. I agree with you about the S model that you just drove.
Nice looking saloon. I once owned a ‘93 XJ6 Sovereign. Kings Blue on the outside, Doeskin colored leather. Drove that beauty cross country on the I-10 from Phoenix to Jacksonville in a day and a half. Wasn’t tired afterwards since the vehicle was so ….Good. Really handled the twisting mountain/canyon roads all around Arizona. Also handled unimproved forest roads.
I remember Jaguar talking about going for the mass market in the 90s, particularly aiming at the 3 series. I guess that's what the XE was meant to be (about 20 years late). It's like Jaguar keep playing last week's lottery numbers expecting that they'll hit the jackpot.
The sad state of affairs is that they aren't making any cars and only have a pointless concept car. Don't be distracted by the bad advertising, they don't know where they're going other than hoping that RUclips influencers have money to burn.
From an American perspective, there's times I forget that Jaguar still exists. Dealers stateside mostly merged into their LR counterparts best part of a decade ago. I can't remember when I've seen an advert for ANY Jag after the famous campaign with Tom Hiddleston. Seemed like a brand that should've quietly gone out of business 8 years ago.
I have this exact car. Same year, In this exact colour combination (except mine has 20" black wheels, and the 3.0 Twin turbo Diesel engine). It's done 95,000 miles and never once let me down. It handles so well and has so much torque you forget how big it is. On a B road, you steer it by looking at the apex of the bend, it simply never misses. Then on a motorway it'll easily hit 60MPG, and I've never once been beaten away from the lights. I recently put a bit of money into getting it back up to showroom condition as I was best man at my mate's wedding, and had to get him to the venue on time. It looks better than pretty much anything else on sale today. If I ever meet Ian Callum I'm buying him a beer. I've got a couple of options on mine which I would recommend: The 700 Watt Meridian sound system is ludicrously overpowered. The trim starts to shake at about 50% volume and at 75% it gets loud to the point of being painful. I can't decide if they were trying to use this as a means to win over younger buyers (bare bass for me choons init bruv), or if it was fitted so their regular clientele could listen to the archers despite their geriatric hearing. Either way, it's great. Another option I'd recommend is the digital dash. For no reason other than the fact that it looks cool. And turns red when you put the car in sport mode. One other amazing thing about this car is how fast it warms up; as in, how fast the interior warms up on a cold day. With multizone climate control, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, even in the depths of winter it's still nice and toasty by the time I'm at the bottom of my street. In short, it's great. It meets the old Jag design brief (pace, grace, space) and saying you have a Jaaaaaag literally never gets old. Also, for the record, I'm 30. I realise this very much makes me a statistical anomaly, but I'd definitely take a Jag over the cars that car enthusiasts my age actually buy (Audi S3, Golf R, AMG CLA 45) for the simple reason that it's less tragic, less pretentious and less boy racer (and also all the above reasons). So yeah, if you're considering one of these, don't shy away from one just because of Jaguar's reputation. As long as it's had all the services done it won't let you down. Also for the love of god, don't take it to a main dealer. A specialist will give you a better service for half the price. So yeah. I agree with most of the points made in this video. Spend the 13 grand and get a 2016-2018 V6 S (the diesel is also good). And it is a shame they never stuck the 5 litre V8 in it.
Re the 5L V8, I had this conversation with a Jaguar dealer. He denied that there was such a model, but they are visible in Autotrader, unless they are incorrect details, 5L V8. I was close to buying a Project 8 and was looking forward to having that engine.
@chepsur forget age, these are great cars. While in France, I rented an M trim 5 Series, it was on winter tyres in summer, but was very disappointed and underwhelmed versus a 2016 XF 2.2 l diesel.
When you were talking about TayFM, I suddenly realised I recognised the countryside you were travelling through, as I've done so myself on many occasions. If the front was losing traction in Lumley Den at low speed, you need new tyres. I've zipped though there many times and never had an issue. I preferrred the previous XF, as it possessed the character this model lacks and that's not just because of the V8 engine. In certain colours, the XE gets it a little more right and I do fancy having a go in a 300. I wonder if the senior management of Jaguar that recently made itself apparent caused the XF and XE to miss the mark.
I've been looking at the XF S back in 2016 but ended up with my first ever Alfa Romeo instead - the Giulia QV. For exactly the those reasons you mentioned in the video.
I drive a 2020 Maserati grancabrio sport and a 2022 jaguar xf p250 rwd. It says a lot when I tell my wife that aside from outright acceleration and a boring exhaust note, the jag doesn’t pale much in comparison to the Maserati. The level of grip is astonishing (I did fit original 20 inch Bond villain wheels with Michelin ps4s tires). When pushed, it leans in the corners but handles well. Rides comfortably when I drive sensibly. Steering is accurate if not the last word on feel. Wish it had the 380ps v6 though! I’m keeping this one for as long as I can. Wife prefers it to the noisy Maserati, which she claims scares the baby 😅
I’m convinced the majority of SUV buyers (ie parents with young families) would be better of with a decent estate car such as the superb. Pity car manufacturers think otherwise
Unfortunately the manufacturers are only catering for demand. The average buyers choice dictates the type of cars they build. I am not a fan of SUV's but until public tastes change, the market for interesting saloons/estates will sadly continue to shrink.
And the late 90s S Type , early 00s X Type? And the XJ retro series of the late 80s to 00s? And the xj220 or not? Jaguar's been confused since Maggie let Ford acquire the golden share and Jag itself. The Callum XJS, XE and XF were all fine, not developed further. Refaced evoques and RR, mmm. 2015 is late to the party. BBC dropped a vid a couple of days ago - from BBC2's Wheelbase of the late 6J0s on the eve of the XJ launch. Including a Lyons interview. And maybe too much mention of Jag's Wardour Street Bentley fame. And it wasn't just the Sweeney that used Jags for the bad guys. Jag's been in turmoil for all its life. Just the original Le Mans era really stands out
I bought a 4 cylinder 300ps XF two weeks ago in R Sport spec. It might not have 6 or 8 cylinders but it's smooth, powerful, has no lag and still sounds surprisingly decent - and my research suggests they're less likely to go wrong than the larger lumps. BMW sold the 328 / 330i with a smaller 4 cylinder lump as well - better to have 4 cylinders and a nice big turbo than some god awful electric car.
You suggested putting 20",rims on the car would help. I found the 20" rims on my 640 meant i was constantly suffering from bust tyre walls. 6 in a year due to potholes in the road. While i loved the car, i traded it tonredcue costs
The biggest mistake Jaaaag did was not put the straight-six ingenium engines in the XF, both Petrol and Diesel. Now I hear that the 4cyl version is not as good as intended (maybe I am wrong), but having fitted the 6cyl with 300-400BHP and 4WD, especially in the Sportbrake makes me purr.......A missed opportunity I think.
The halo model effect is real and strong. I guess the brand still contained halo vehicles (F-Type, for example), but the XF perhaps lacked 'cool' or 'aspiration' without one. Good call, JayEmm.
pretty sure the main reason this generation of XE/XF did not get the V8 is because from 2017 they were trying to sell the Project 8 for £150k and a cooking version of XE/XF with the V8 at half the price would have made that very difficult
If jag were raiding the ford bins for engines during this time it should have attempted a turbo barra. These bonnets are pretty big,. I'm sure it could fit.
I love the Jags, however, their reliability has had an effect on their reputation in Australia, whether that is because of the dealer network, or specific geographical issues, I am unsure. The old V12's were a hopeless cause with the persistent overheating issues, which are by now legendary in magnitude. If only I could feel a greater sense of confidence in them, I would be well pleased.
@JayEmmCars James I can't find your review of the XE V6 S Supercharged that you mention in the video, can you share a link or have not posted it on RUclips yet?
How’d Jaguar fall off so greatly from this era? In South Africa the main reason was pricing. The XE cost more or less the same as the 5 Series and E-Class. The XF was the same price. Made little sense.
Think you’ve pretty much got it right. I’m probably in the jaguar marketing segment but at 60 i think this car is for old people 😅. Not that it needs to go all M3 tear your face off but something a little more saucy would be all it needs
Here in the U.S. 4 door sedan sales are almost dead. Almost everyone is buying crossovers or SUVs. Ford stopped making sedans entirely a few years ago.
I have heard, that according to their recent advertising campaign, Jaguar have abandoned their customer base, and alienated future new buyers as well? So, one way or another, it is business as usual then.
Great stuff, thanks. You lost me with your BMW comparisons - you said it was a rival to the 5 series (which is what I thought), but you said it was larger and compared it to a 7 series, then you kept comparing it to a 3 series.
What’s the Problem with the V6 Diesel. I have the 2018 model, I have put 140.000km on it so far and didn’t have any problems aside from the camera in the right mirror breaking every 12-18 months for no apparent reason since it’s out of warranty I didn’t fix that, as I don’t use the 360 cam anyway. Is there anything to be aware of that I didn’t notice?
Speaking of Jags that should have done better, I am curious about your take on the I-Pace. Have you driven one of those? What might it tell us about the future of Jaguar?
So, as the car already HAS the V8s bottom end just with only the top end of the first 3 cylinders of each bank, surely fitting the top end of the 5.0ltr V8 should be a fairly easy conversion? Obviously with the supercharger too! Then a little tuning to deliver an easily achievable 666bhp (I'm sure that was the demonic power figure quoted?) Sounds like it needs a little work on the suspension, brakes, wheels n tyres to be able to handle the near double power but it would be an EPIC car if this was all possible!
Jaguar Cars must have been infiltrated by the agents of the competition that have slowly got together and formed a deadly tumour within the Jaguar Car company. Much like a deadly tumour our in any cat, the end will be by the hand of man putting the brand out of it's misery and to death. However, one day I do believe another man will resurrect the brand and make it a small but perfectly formed sports car maker like Sir William Lyons did when the SS100 first hit the road and the JAguar XK120 followed a few years later!
The old man keeps his current xj and the young man wants an xfr. Oh, and btw, the dealer situation is a widespread problem. It's also a mess in mainland Europe. Jaguar thinking with their future remake that people will spend Bentley amounts of money for this kind of service beyond me.
i was big fun of Jaguar as a young boy. But this woke nonsense they are disrespectful. On subject of low selling numbers in past 9:46 is one of the answers: So Jaguar is so lazy thet they didn't bother making real V6 just put half V8 so we don't have power and sound of v8 and we don't have space for mechanics to work on smaller V6?!
JLR has been confused since Tata took over. Jaguar making SUVs competing with Land Rover. V6 and diesels in Jaguars. I never got the feeling they were competing with the BMW 5 series. They make good cars, but the heart of the Jaguar is the engine. I was looking at an L322 the other day and the owner was trying to pawn it off as having a Jaguar engine (though it was the 4.4TDV8 which is a Ford engine let's face it) because *that's* what he thought was super cool. Shame what happened to Jaguar and JLR. Land Rover is going to have some rough times ahead with this management and designers.
I went from the XF V8 to the XE R-Sports fuel economy was the main reason, its the same age as the car your driving and tbh its been faultless really great to drive, but I completely agree with you eve then you could see that Jag really didn't have a clue what they way forward was the interior was good for its time but very copy and paste, as I found out when I saw my sister in laws e-pace, when i heard they were scrapping the XJ and did not understand why as it was the "prestige model" had having lucked out and driven one I could not help and think they were going away from there own market, Still yet to try a F-type but sadly will be looking for something soon and will end up with a Volvo or the Peugeot 508 after thinking i would own nothing but Jags then they killed the brand, and i am not a old man 😂

I think you are spot on. The reason that BMW have sold so many of their 320D over the years was because of the M3.
The Woke mind virus tearing down things as though people would buy Jags if only they weren't so s££t
Sorry but what exactly was woke about that advert? It was misguided, pretentious, ridiculous, didn't even feature a car, but why was it woke?
If only you culture warriors had bought more Jaguars in the last 10 years instead of only remembering they existed once they did their last marketing stunt...
I really would like an XF but I am only interested in petrols and the only ones that appeal are the XFR and XFR-S. Wish they put the 5ltr in the x260.
@@daner650its called class and elegance something that is forgotten in today's world.
Jaguar made such elegant machines, sad state of affairs now
The sad state of affairs is that they aren't making any cars and only have a pointless concept car. Don't be distracted by the bad advertising, they don't know where they're going other than hoping that RUclips influencers have money to burn.
“Oh gosh I’ve got a bit of an issue with my wallet you know”
Had the pleasure of putting a couple hundred miles into one of these a couple years ago. 3.0d V6S and it was a lovely car
I had a v6 s D, the huge torque was great. I would have another . V6 S d sportbrake.
Don’t rule out the high output 2 litre petrol. 0-60 in the 5 sec range. AWD. Over 40MPG.
It's happening! It's like someone has sent the cat to a swiss clinic
@JayEmmOnCars , what happened to the cool flashy shirts?😮
You being 30 makes you an anomaly what does it make me owning one at 22 😅
Re the 5L V8, I had this conversation with a Jaguar dealer.
@@chepsur ...far less likely than your peers to ever be pulled over by the police
The SV8 is the XF with most Jagness
The left, rear three quarter view of the car, is sublime.
As much as I'm a sucker for V8, Jag's V6S just sounds great! I'd even be more than happy to take V6S F-Type over V8S/V8R F-Type.
You would be disappointed. The V6 in a non F-Type is just...meh. V8 or nothing.
Jaguar should have made straight six agains.
F-Pace had straight 6s
@maz500 i needed the straight 6 in the saloons and coupes, there is a romance to it.
They don't do straight any more.
@mothbreeder641 didnt they bring the straight six back the enginum program?
Anyway, i would have loved if they fitted em in the saloons and coupes.
XF is a great car, drives really well and is very comfortable. And still handsome.
22:10 that is also a prefacelift but with full LED headlights
Well it’s not the final facelift of 2021 😅
@AndyK.1 there was only 1 X260 face-lift in late 2020; from 2015 to mid 2020 you can opt for either Bi-xenons or full LEDs. F-Type had 2
PreFacelift owner here.
Better build quality than the X260 me thinks.
Reckon you could find an XE V6S with the supercharged petrol? Nearly bought one of those a couple years back but couldn't find the right spec
A great opening to the show! Very funny!
You suggested putting 20",rims on the car would help. I found the 20" rims on my 640 meant i was constantly suffering from bust tyre walls. 6 in a year due to potholes in the road. While i loved the car, i traded it tonredcue costs
This Xf was just to safe, both from outside and the inside.
It’s a shame that the V6 disappeared with the final couple of model years, because that’s when it got the interior it deserved
Motoring Journalists might like to reflect own role in the sedans demise. This review is another example.
The halo model effect is real and strong. I guess the brand still contained halo vehicles (F-Type, for example), but the XF perhaps lacked 'cool' or 'aspiration' without one. Good call, JayEmm.
Maybe an opportunity for some aftermarket added spice?
pretty sure the main reason this generation of XE/XF did not get the V8 is because from 2017 they were trying to sell the Project 8 for £150k and a cooking version of XE/XF with the V8 at half the price would have made that very difficult
I am not sure I agree. The Project8 was far more than an XE with a big engine. This and a V8 XF would be completely different animals
@@EatingMachine23 And there were only around 300 made. Plus it was far more than just the engine.
TY J 🙏🙏
@JayEmmOnCars a few videos ago you said that you reviewed a 2015 Jaguar XE S. Is the video coming or you've canceled it.
Jaguar persisted with Diesel versions when the customers were abandoning them. The real crying shame was you could only get diesel is the Sportwagon.
Car ranges are like a wine list - if it goes up to £75 people spend £30; but if it goes up to £1,000 people will spend £100.
On the F-Type, i couldn't wait to shred the Pirellis and get some Michelins fitted!
Crazy to think the USA market for 4 door saloons is bigger than the UK market that is driving SUVs
Here in the U.S. 4 door sedan sales are almost dead. Almost everyone is buying crossovers or SUVs. Ford stopped making sedans entirely a few years ago.
Fellow American here, and yeah.... every year I see more giant SUVs, luxo Trucks, and crossovers.
2011 xfs is all that I need 🎉
That "all new" aluminium architecture was basically the S-Type platform made in alloy.
Your comment is basically BULL*HIT
That's what the X350 was lad
No, you cant do that. Get an XFR and be happy with it, or tune it to 650hp
This XF is better than any new car the company may or may not make. The brand is on the verge of death.
You are having some good taste over Xmas
Is James trying to remind us that Jaguar used to be a car company? 😅
How is the situation with this V6? Will it break? I'd really like an early XF, with the Ford V6.
Timing chains can go apart from that they are solid.
A Few broken ones around. Particularly in UsA
i was big fun of Jaguar as a young boy.
Well done that was a decent Tayside accent to me but I’m from Edinburgh so how knows 😅
How reliable are these XF's i want one but everyone tells me to steer clear of them JLR typical problems
Depends on the engine, but if you're worried about expensive repair bills I'd recommend you stay away.
Is the XE S mentioned coming in review video soon?
Good looking, very smooth suspension, good handling, but the smaller engines were not really good, and the brakes a disaster.
He should put a leaper on the bonnet! 😅😅😅
This is a PETROL V6... Not a diesel...
To all those saying " I have the same car", you don't...
Petrol is petrol... Diesel is diesel... Period...
Jaguar: Turning drivers into mechanics ! 😢
Ha ha.

Toyota...yawns 🥱🥱
The price of petrol and the road tax has killed the big cars
Tax post 2016 is more to do with the value being over £40K or not. And lasts 6 years
You’re not selling it to me Jay!😮
