  • I bought the cheapest hardshell tent available in 2024 for overland camping. The Naturnest Sirius clamshell roof top tent comes in at $1099 with a shipping fee of $300 plus tax, making it a total of around $1500 out the door. Although rooftop tents are not cheap in general, this is one of the best deal for a hardshell tent. There are several soft cover tents that are cheaper, but hardshell tents are more efficient and easier to open.

There’s definitely a learning curve to deploying and re-packing these tents. I’ve got an iKamper Mini, and struggled a bit the first few times, but in time, you will get very proficient at it. I had a terrible chemical smell in my tent, (when new) and left it open for a few days to air out. I’m a side sleeper, and couldn’t deal with the stock mattress. I replaced it with a Qomotop Double self inflating mattress. (4” thick) It was an awesome upgrade, and now I get a great night sleep. I use a 12 volt air pump to top it off with a little more air, and reverse the pump to suck the air out to close it up when done. With the air sucked out, the mattress is only 1.5” thick. It adds a little more time to putting it away, but it’s SO worth it!

I have a few different camping air mats, but nothing is more comfortable than the 5” mattress I carried in my prior vehicle. Sounds like you know how to get a good nights rest.
