Upgrade the axle to a 3500# axle. That’s what I did for my trailer. I run a pair of Ford Ranger wheels and tires. The added width helps stabilize the trailer even more.

Tip from a 70 yr old to save the back: When working alone, park closer to the garage to unload hefty boxes/packages. Slide 'em off the tailgate to the ground when possible. 😉
After-thought: are the nuts nylok/aircraft-type nuts, or did you add a bit of thread lock to the screw/bolt threads?

I have those same flip down legs, they work pretty good, I have one on each side of the tongue a frame as those flip down wheels don’t work well on an a frame being mounting only on one side. Might also consider some rock lights mounted underneath to give some under-glow, I put 4 on mine. Enjoy the trailer!

I think the plugs are only rated to about 10 amps and the heater needs about 15 on start up. I got a AC to DC converter and plugged it into the 120 outlet on my bluetti. Worked great. You wouldn't need the extra battery and would give you more storage space in the tongue box

Small trailers are such a pia to back up. I found myself moving my small trailer as much as possible by hand and then hitching it up. Saved me a ton of headaches.

That’s really cool! I believe the diesel heater has glow plugs or something that electrically heats the heater for start up. So it takes more current then.

Hey Brian, Great project. Carry tools to tighten things up. I've built several similar type trailers for friends and family. "Just the trailer not the cool part". They love to rattle loose. Recently I've been using nylock nuts or blue thread locker and so far it's been a good fix. I'm excited to see you use it. Thanks for the video's

I am gonna be 53 Years old in December and due to the Fact that I do have SEVERE Scoliosis physically speaking I Literally would never be able to Climb up into a camper Set-Up like that, Even though I would Love to. At One point in My Life 14 Years ago I was (Past tense) 6 Feet 3 1/2 inches tall, well I have been 5 Feet 10 inches tall since then so that Proves how much in height that I have Shrunk in 14 years time. So Point being if I could climb into a Set-Up Like that I would in a HeartBeat.

I Brian. I would install 15 inch rims because the small tires will cause sway at highway speeds. You can mount the axle under the springs and probably use spacers for more height.

Definitely need to upgrade the axle with a 5x4.5 5 lug 48” 2k pound axle from northern tools..did that with my build and glad I did…

Excellent 👌 You finally got the solar panel connected to power station with battery . Great job. Is it possible (here I go thinking the extra mile😊) to run back up wire from your truck alternator to have as stand bye back up to charge that power station and or extra battery in your rear silver cabinet? . nice setup. 4 lug to 5 lug wheel adapter, all you need are the correct measurements and you are good to add some 13 or 15 inch trailer tires. You might have to modify the fender to fit a taller tire.

Looks good! Nice little overland build. Slap on the same size wheels as the f150 so you will always have a spare or 2. Have you thought about a drawer system for deck? Or attach a slide pull out system for the cooler and tote supplies. Looking forward to the next video! 🍻

Pros : Truck caps look like a grandpa mobiles. This is what I have. The reduction to an everyday driver by leaving your camping gear at home would be a gas saving, plus you can now also use your truck as a truck.
Cons : Your excuse to not use your truck as a truck is gone. Lol Your access to some of your gear may not be with you. A little less secure and a little more setup time. I would think that getting ready to camp would be about the same depending on your setups.

If you can’t find wheels, check your spindle size and swap hubs to a common 15" trailer wheel bolt pattern. You may even try and find a heavier complete axle instead of one piece at a time. You might need a wider axle for bigger wheels and tires, also might need to modify the fenders.

It's the Ironton 40x48 from Northern tools. I used the equivalent from Harbor Freight
I have the same tent, and I am sure by now you have noticed at the foot of the tent there is a small zipper you can put the heater or A/C vent in.

With the truck bed now open and the second floor 😂 on the trailer you have a lot of room 😎 Northern tool may have just the wheels and tires you’re looking for. Take one with you and match the hole, and lug nuts spaces.
What’s odd is these wheels don’t even fit on lugs…they just slide onto the axle and held on with a castle nut and cotter pin. Not even sure why these wheels have 4 bolts/nuts on them

Man, I’ll admit I’m an idiot with this, but this is the first time I’ve ever had a trailer or anything that does not actually use the lugs to bolt to the axle. This axle just slides into the wheel and the whole wheel is held on with a castle nut and cotter pin. Do t even know why there are 4 bolts on the wheel….
@BrianWatersOutdoors been there with boat trailers in the past! If you can figure out the lug pattern, maybe you can go up at least to 13 or 14 inch!
I almost forgot, the four bolts are your lugs.

Just watched the next video....sorry to hear that it didnt work out. I wondered how you would back into camp spots with it.
The box was weather sealed so I wasn’t worried about moisture getting in.

Brian, Forgot to mention for wheels. Measure center to center of the studs, Count the number of studs.eg; 5 studs on 4.5' centers. In fact that maybe what you have.

@seymourwrasse3321 check your maximum speed on your wheels and tires, these trailers are notorious for having 45-55 maximum speed limits on the tires and rims. what ever size tires you go with, make sure they are trailer tires
Great catch! Manual says don’t exceed 45 mph. In Texas that’s neighborhood riding around speed.
Yeah…they are “rated” for 55. I found some 4 on 4 13” wheels rated for 80mph on E-Trailer

Built many of those trailers to pull behind motorcycles. Always took a leaf out of each spring. And the most important thing! Tongue is to short. Sharp turns even with a motorcycle trailer got really close to saddle bags. 2" square tubing a foot longer fixed the problem and pulled down the road much better. Short tongue created a lot of trailer sway with a bike. I know sway wouldn't be an issue for you but clearance while turning would be improved. Maybe a place for that extra battery too

I love how neat and tidy your work is! I was looking at Harbor Freight's folding trailer and a few people posted their pics of the modifications they did on the ones they bought. A few added larger tires and explained how they did it. I'm a little surprised the tiny size you chose, I would have gone with one at least the size of the floor of the tent. That's going to be an interesting tow, a couple of things to keep in mind would be the bouncing and vibration. I would either really pad the battery box or put the battery, Bluetti and the fridge in the truck while towing as the jostling around is really hard on the plates in the battery and the electronics. Going with a heavier duty RV or boat battery might not be a bad idea either. Hopefully it tows well and you won't have to worry about it. I'm looking forward to the video of the maiden voyage. : )

@@BrianWatersOutdoors You're welcome! I used to work in a parts store and I remember some of the off roaders would bring their batteries in that were trashed. The guy who delivered them to us showed us a core someone turned in that had broke open, and some of the plates broke loose and were leaning on the others.
Like... lead plates in a lead acid battery?

The standard wheel patterns are 4 by 4 inch. Just buy wheel with standard 4 by 4 inch bolt pattern and should work for you.

Brian, cool setup. I wish you'd have used a bigger trailer though. From other channels, those power stations a weird about fridges and diesel heaters, wattage is usually too low, or the in rush is too high, but I varies brand to brand.

You can get trailer wheels in a bigger size but they won't clear your fenders northern tool has them in stock if you got one in your area
I’m not worried about the fenders…I can take those off and fab up something else. What I can’t figure out is the wheels. There are no lugs on this trailer the wheels fit on, they just slide onto the axle and are held on with a cotter pin and castle nut. Not even sure why these wheels have 4 bolts/nuts on them🤷🏻♂️
@@BrianWatersOutdoors that nut and pin hold's the hub on and the wheel bolts to the hub well every one of my trailers are that way hard for me to say since i've not seen yours in person

I'm not sure what you used to secure the D-rings to the floor? If you used screws I would replace them with bolts, washers and nuts. I secured D-rings to my wood floor on my trailer with the provided wood screws and they pulled out with all of the shaking, rocking and rolling on rough dirt and gravel roads. Luckily I didn't lose any cargo, only one strap, but it was a valuable lesson.

you missed out on the good pressure treated lumber, it had arsenic in the treatment, the heater will pull about 10 amps at start up.
It was jumping to around 130 watts, which technically is more than my 12v outlet is rated for.
@@BrianWatersOutdoors that's almost 11 amps, so you were at the very limit
I feel like a 12V electric blanket is a much simpler solution than that diesel heater.
If you have enough battery juice I guess
@@BrianWatersOutdoors you've already added extra battery, and you only really need the electric on to preheat the sleeping bag.
Very nice build. Well thought out. Well done. Couple of questions; 1. Diesel heater, is the long tube going into the tent insulated? 2. With the diesel heater flange, instead of opening a zipper, could you use heavy magnets glued to the flange and put the flange on the inside of the tent, and have the magnets hold it to the flange on the tube side?
I really like the build. Also, you guys are looking good, both of you have lost weight it appears. That is awesome, and a journey I am in as well.

I have another idea for the heat duct deal, but it would require a fair amount of modification. I’ll tinker with it and see what I can come up with, and share if it works.

I didn’t end up using it. Honestly, it was a bad design and I didn’t feel comfortable towing it.

Everything looks great Brian. I'm a little concerned with that small of a trailer and towing it on the highway. I think you will also find it a PITA to back up into camping sites. It's so short. Have you test out backing it up?

Wondering what the weight will be of the total build.. i have an 05 jeep liberty 4x4 it a 4 cyl standard cant pull more then 2800 lb if im not mistaken. so even a mico rv is out of the question for me
This weighs nothing, I move it around by hand. Maybe 400 lbs fully loaded.
Hey Brian! Great build and you’ve got a new subscriber! I recently built my first RTT camping trailer after purchasing a Rubicon and I’m excited to get out there! I’m curious, did you consider welding the trailer frame to avoid depending on the bolts and hardware staying tight? I’m not a welder, but my build escalated (as projects often do) and I decided to purchase a welder to assist with some ideas I wanted to incorporated. I upgraded my wheels and tires using wheel adaptors from Amazon to convert to a standard Jeep bolt pattern and provide the extra spacing necessary for some much larger all-terrain tires. They required flipping the axle first to gain additional lift and clearance, but now my trailer rides level behind my Jeep. It’s been working very well so far! Looking forward to seeing yours in action! Happy to chat further if I can be of any help!
Thanks Ryan. But….i ended up scrapping this idea. The trailer was just too small to tow safely, so I’m going with another RTT setup over my truck bed. I also thought about welding up the trailer, but between the nylon lock nuts and split washers I felt it was pretty secure. If I put the trailer through its paces I’d probably come back and weld it up though like you did. Better safe than sorry👍🏻
Can you give a rough estimate of the cost of this setup? I’d really like to get into truck camping and doing vids and some catch clean cooks. This looks like the most realistic, obtainable setup that I could do on weekends..! Any info would help! Thanks 🙏 can’t wait to see how it performs!
The tent was around $1400 shipped, and the trailer was $299

Does your battery box need some ventilation? Also, batteries are affected by temperature so should that box be insulated so your battery doesn't lose its charge? Or freeze? (Overheat in hot weather?)

I’ve had really good luck with Bodega coolers. Pretty inexpensive for a 12v cooler on Amazon
