      I have had the Smittybilt XL tent for 2 years (78 nights camping) and the small version like yours for 2 years prior. They have both been very well built IMO and survived numerous hard thunderstorms in Colorado, Utah, Big Bend, New Mexico and the Texas coast. One trick to any roof top tent IMO is to get an air mattress. For the small Smittybilt, I used a full-size. For the XL, I use a queen size air mattress. A Ryobi 18v compressor inflates it in just 2 minutes. Best part is that since the air mattress takes up MUCH less room when deflated, you gain a TON of additional storage when the tent is closed (prior to putting on the travel cover. I can actually store 2 small duffels and a few other items in the space the foam mattress used to occupy. You just fold the tent closed and the the one side (between the hinges) will be wide open to load up stuff. Once loaded, put the cover on and roll.

    I keep on coming back to this video because it reinvigorated my desire for camping. Pre-eighteen, my family and I used to go camping like 8-10 times a year, but as you get more experience, you start upgrading more. We went from a tent, to tent trailer, to trailer, to RV, and once you start getting up there it feels less-and-less like camping and more like a hassle because of all the preparation.
    Roof-top tents really feel like a great mix between tent camping with modern amenities to make it easier.

    Regarding camping in winter, someone else might have already answered, but the low tent seems to be more apt for it.
    Number one priority in winter camping is sufficient ventilation, to avoid condensation, that will get your sleeping bag humid, and thus, ineffective to keep you warm.
    Second most important thing is to have enough support in case it snows during the night. Snow doesn't drip down the roof, and it's heavy.
    We had a surprise snowfall during the night on mother's day weekend.... one of the tents collapsed... that's how the occupants woke up 😬

      I would go cheap no doubt, the expensive one as Pumphrey said left too much Wow factor on the table;. In place of a map;
      hard topped one could have easily integrated so much more a soft tent could not: An little 20-40watt exterior solar panel, a battery pack with a tender to prevent overcharge/heat, interior lighting, usb charger for fans/mobile and still have room for an acrylic window.
      Solar panels, wiring and acrylics hate kinking. In this day and age that could increase build cost by $300 tops. If it had that, I would pay $3k or it.

She couldn't find the ladder, turned around and slipped from the very top. Broke both wrists and faceplanted, leaving gravel embedded in her face, a huge lump and needing stitches in various places. 4 hr drive out to a hospital. (Needless to say it could have even worse) Those ladders are DANGEROUS! We will likely get rid of our tent now, but I would definitely recommend grip tape on the rungs (and maybe a fall mat!)

      So with Tacomas (all models), the mounts for the bumper bolt into where the crash bar was. These are very thin plates since it was only ever designed and engineered to absorb impact, not the opposite and pull other vehicles up mountains, hills, and out of ditches.
      A common upgrade for anyone who actually uses their winch or recovery points on plate bumpers is to cut the original mount off, and replace it with fabricated brackets from thicker plate steel and fillet weld them to the frame.

After they initially received slew of complaints about it, ARB added mounting hardware into the kit for the bumper brackets to be essentially pinned in place through the frame with a 3/8” gr. 5 bolt and a sleeve. One of the guys at the 4x4 shop I buy parts from actually worked at ARB when they figured this out. This got rid of the issue but the ARB instructions are so poor that most people don’t do it when they install. I honestly wouldn’t have known to do it if I hadn’t heard it from the guys at the shop. My guess is that they didn’t do this when they installed the bumper, which then put all the strain from the winch on the, frankly flimsy, frame endcaps.

    I have been thinking of getting a roof top tent for a while now. My biggest thing was either hardshell or soft. From this, I didn't even think about the hardshell side not having a window, which isn't a huge thing but definitely not ideal. It would also be great to have the bed set up in there all the time, which the hardshell can not.
    I also didn't quite think of the truck bed accessibility but not much you can do about that except putting in drawers. Great video though for sure

    It's also interesting that the ikamper won the setup contest even though the Smittybilt took a minute longer but is ready to sleep in when you're done with it, whereas with the ikamper you still have to go get all your shit that you're going to put inside of it.

      I own a "iKamper 1.0" and can say that the mounting should be a draw. It really is luck of the draw when it comes to install. I know mine can literally be taken on or off in less than 2 min. With the use of a cordless drill driver. As far as being able to store your bedding under the shell, it has to be done in an exact way or it won't close but it does hold it. Biggest reason I switched to an I camper was the shell blocks the wind when set up right and I was able to comfortably sleep my wife and I and our two kids (4 and 5 y/o). It makes the overlanding experience fun because your only spending 10 - 20 min breaking camp in the morning so you can move to the next area and it keeps everything relatively clean. Breaking camp with a tent on the ground can get pretty dirty in my experience.

    • @deejayimm
      @deejayimm 2 года назад +3

      @@jaredslattery4584 I'm not taking anything away from the ikamper, I'm just simply saying that the Smittybilt has been designed to be very easily mountable just about anywhere.
      Anytime you make a product that is one-size-fits-all, it's not going to be as good in some places as a specific product like the ikamper, but will also be better in others. Of course this is a sample set of one, and everyone's experience will be different, but there's just something dishonest about them literally showing that the Smittybilt is easier to mount and setup, but then saying the ikamper is....

Yes its pricey but at 4 in the morning when nature calls, it has a bathroom with toilet and shower. One thing that comes to mind with the low tent is all the minor things you can fix that they had issues with. You could get mattress pad to add extra comfyness. You could probably keep it in their to because in the video they made it sound like they had a couple inches of room and could keep their sleeping bags in it. For the zippers making noise in the wind you could just put some black electrical tape on the zipper. You could probably even get some of those clear plastic windows and Velcro it on. all these modifications could potentially get rid of all the issues team low talked about while still being way below team high.

When your done camping just fold it. Wheel it to the truck and slid it on top of the stuff in your bed. If the tent had straps on it with a ratchet that would be cool. the great roof top tent debacle.
    I'm a pretty avid camper and live relatively close to a decent national park that sees a lot of off roading at times of the year on the east coast. The only time you can use them here is at an established campground which I dislike some of the areas for that (too many people with no campground etiquette or too close to other campers). Only a few trails near by for overlanding and most have been ruined by those with no trail etiquette and destroyed some of it and most have limited spots to camp (which I have issue with because of people lacking trail etiquette).
    Meanwhile dispersed camping I know a bunch of spots and trails for (owing most to the Appalachian trail). since I already own most of the stuff for backpacking I can car camp relatively just as easy with slightly longer setup time (about 5 minutes for the tent and 2 minutes for the mattress). If you go this route I highly suggest a decent tent (Lynx ALPS is good for 3 season and like 180), a ground tarp or footprint (30 or so), sleeping pad for 50 (klymit static V, used it to sleep on while visiting my friends), and throw in a foam mat for 30 or so. only slightly worse than sleeping on a bed. If you need more comfort spend more on the pad or a thicker foam mat. Klymit has a 5 inch think foam padded bag for 150ish (it's 2.5 inch foam and 2.5 inch air basically what i have for cheaper but 1 package), Alps foam mat has 2 different thickness, 375 and 625 (that's their thickness btw)
    If I go with the low tent budget you can get REI grand hut 4 (300$ slightly larger than both tents) + footprint ($25), NEMO tensor pad ($170), and whatever style of foam mat you want (most are in the $50 range). 55$ cheaper than low and can add my dog into it unlike a roof top tent unless I want to spend 200 on the doggo ramp. I'm not climbing up and down with my 80lb beast under one arm and jumping from roof height is not good for the bones especially as they age.

    I have owned an IKamper 2.0 for two years. I camp with my 3 boys and I am a tall dude at 6'6" so the room in the IKamper is what sold me on it. It is very warm in cold environments making a tent heater unnecessary. It also has the nice feature of the hard shell which means it has virtually no noise when driving it. If you are a tall person or have more than one other person sleeping with you I would go with the IKamper. The only issue I have had is the paint on the roof started to break down after 18 months and I had to spray LineX on the roof to protect it.

    A friend has one that you push a button on the dash to set it up and it cast less than your expensive one. Added bonus with the hard shell you can mount a solar panel on it

    Would be interesting to see how they both perform on a longer trip fo say 6mths or so. Just to see what breaks and what don’t.

    The clam shell has two big advantages which is superior wind protection and at least some insulation for when it’s cold

    • @ChrisSmoove77
      @ChrisSmoove77 Год назад

      the insulation is huge as well as sound deadening. ikamper also makes a internal insulation blanket tha covers the whole roof and sides. Thats a big deal when you're getting to 32* and below

    Hard shell is amazing when you have heavy wind or rain. You can point the hard shell into it. Doing that in the softer shell will be a rough night.
    From experience with both.

    A rooftop of any sort does keep you up and away from most of the critters. But I've been happy with my 11x11 foot modified dome tent. Rooftop tent seems like a lot of work just to say you put a tent on your roof.
    Nice that you can un-bolt the Low and set it up on the ground. Probably a lot quieter, down on the ground. A lot of people report how noisy they are in the wind. I can usually sleep through any kind of racket, myself. The knowledge that I'm out of the wind but there IS strong wind is somehow quite restful, and it's like a lullaby.

    Definitely would choose the Smitty Built tent. I like the access from both sides and the openness/views that provides. In cooler weather the slightly smaller size means better temperature control. As for the “not so great” mattress, there are plenty of options for upgrading to a more comfortable one (especially considering the savings over buying the much more costly tent). The price difference leaves plenty of money to invest elsewhere such as a Dometic camp fridge/freezer. I would prefer the higher mounting set up like what was used on the hi-truck simply for the better access to the truck bed.
    All said, I thoroughly enjoyed this comparison video as I have looked into both tents and couldn’t see the advantage that justified such a price difference. 👍

      @@Azzy_Mazzy the only vans I’ve seen that were even remotely able to go some rough places were lifted and built for it but by the time you do that, you could have had the ultimate truck set up lol I’m building a van myself for travel but not over landing. If I was going into rough country I’d for sure go with a truck
