A starter tent....!?! Bro this is the TENT to get..... i guess it makes sense to pay over 3 times something that is actually worse then the 4k tent. I have the Naturenest tent which is identical to the 4k roofnest tent. Its actually bigger then this video. mine sleeps 3 people!! Gotta love not getting screwed over!
@@simonbenn5340 I meant to start camping out of a rooftop top tent. I don't even know if it is for me yet. I've been camping out of my cargo area or ground tents. It's hard to find something affordable that checks all my princess needs. I haven't made the investment yet, just getting out there with what I have. Will @Venture2Roam already sold me on it, you don't gotta try to convince me further. I'll get it when I can afford it 😮💨
My FSR tent came with round nylon style spin on handles for the mounting hardware. Like you, I have always used a lawn mower T-handles and so I replaced them with those. I really do like the FSR high country tent, far better than wedge tents, I also enjoy the optional insulated inner wall kit, but like most flip out sideways tents. It is a royal pain in the arse, to remove the cover and deploy the tent on top of my trailer, I would imagine it’s the same pain on any lifted jeep. That’s something that I really find me very important with these rooftop tents is how easy are they to deploy in inclement weather in the field.
That’s one of the reasons I like these wedge tents at the moment. There are so fast and easy to set up and pack away. But they all have trade offs. Thanks for sharing about your FSR!
I completely agree with your final assessment. I started big three years ago and went with the James Baroud $5000.00 tent which I don't regret actually. Its a great tent! just limited inside with room. Its still going strong by the way. I also agree its awesome to be able to store the ladder and all bedding inside the tent... just saves room inside the jeep for all the other really expensive and cool toys we all like. One last thing, I really enjoy your videos! you are so dynamic and and your production value is great!!! thank you and keep them coming. Great things are definitely coming to this channel!

I agree, I started by renting tents to see what I liked. When I made my big purchase I went with the FSR EVO2. No tent is perfect. I gained a better insulated blackout tent than the soft sides I tried, but miss the skylight.

I recently bought the top oak tent, after about 2 months comparing numerous tents. Fits my needs, works very well and saved me a lot of $, which allowed me to finish building out my Jeep. Enjoyed the review, and your videos. Making family memories 👍 is what it’s all about.
Great review and love the thoroughness of evaluation on both. Earned a subscribe! Curious though on limits to leaving sleepings bags and or pillows in either of the RTT's and being able to still close them. Do both, either, or neither allow you to leave lets say two 20 degree rated sleepings bags and a pillow in there?
One advantage that I can see from the RoofNest is the bar that crosses the skylight might actually act as a ridge line keeping the water from pooling on top. Probably not a huge problem given the slope of the tent but every little bit helps?
Bought a Roofnest falcon, i must admit it is an awesome tent but i quickly realized I'm too tall for a wedge style tent. James Baroud makes the PERFECT tents IMO but that price is gut wrenching lol. If you're gonna buy a wedge style tent just make sure you're short enough to sleep comfortably
I think frequency of use is also a big determining factor, I only get out 3 to 4 times a year if I'm lucky, for me the cheaper tent would be a no brainer. At this point I'm using a ground tent and am pretty happy with it, but since I bought my Gladiator and put a cap on it I've been considering a RTT. I also found a cap that is an exact copy of the Smart Cap at half the price.
Nice video! I did this comparison in my mind last night and whattaya know, RUclips served up a fresh video the next day. Love the algorithm. Anyways - you mentioned you take the tent off often; how do you store it? I plan on using both my rigs interchangeably with 1 tent until things change, so an off / on / store system is rattling around in the back of my mind. Thanks in advance, and again, nice video. I swear Google is spying on us somehow...or they've figured out how to read out minds. I use a Harken Hoist system. I have two in my garage so I can hang both tents. It take 10-15 mins to get them on and off. Maybe I should make a video about lol.
Wow, thank you for all the information! I am on a fixed income and building my Tacoma out and this will really help out. I was wondering on space with 2 people and two small dogs as far as room?
One question/subject I had that was not talked about or answered in this video is how much weight can you carry on the top of the wedge, sing the provided cross bars? If I went that route I'd need to move my two riffle-carrying cases (harbor freight low profile) that I used to carry recovery tools and whatnot while on a trip as well as my solar panel to the top of the tent's shell. I don't overload these gun cases because evidently center of gravity dictates that a lot of weight on top is not that good but still I'd want to know if the two gas struts would take the weight. You can add mattress thickness to the stock mattress. Don’t see the value in paying 3x the money for a tent that does the same thing and may be swapped out prior to its wearing out.
Would love if you test the aerodynamics (sense of drag, wind noise, AND fuel efficiency) of the two tents. It would be interesting to know if the roof lines of the falcon pro make a difference. I assume the difference is subtle. However, for regular long haul trips improvements of 2 mpg might be worth the higher cost of the falcon pro. ???
Great recommendation. Personally, I haven't found a blow up foam mattress that I like though. They are more comfortable, but take forever to deflate...unless the FSR one is fast to deflate? I value speed to break down camp a lot...and these two are lightning fast.
@@Venture2Roam I don't like that either haha. I left it open to self inflate and it was still able to close with one blanket . So I just left it semi inflated. Comfy enough for me.
Hi, what’s your opinion on say the Napier Z sport truck bed tent? I’m at a crossroads bc truck bed tents have way more room; however in bad weather the RTP obviously is way better. Please let me know your opinion. FYI: I own a Ram Rebel 1500 but crew cab= great but a short 5 7’ bed. The bed tents do include/ enclose the tailgate do that’s another 2 feet etc Help; please 🙏
I've never used a truck bed tent, but have a few friends who've used them. I think they are a good lightweight, affordable option. My two cents is this. If you are an occasional camper, like just a few times per year, the truckbed tent is a great option because it's so easy to stow and you don't need any additional racks, etc to use it. If you are going out many times throughout the year, an RTT or something like a Go Fast/Alucab/Super Pacific bed tent set up are fantastic. In general I'd say start with the most inexpensive, easiest option...I guarantee that if you like the lifestyle - you're going to iterate on your setup anyway.
do you think 6'4" in would fit length wise without toes being compressed by roof? i tried my buddies roofnest falcon xl but the wedge didnt work well for 6'4" folks. do you think either of these would work better?

You can put a roof top tent on almost anything as long as you have a rack or crossbars that support the dynamic weight of the tent. I don't really know what rack you should buy for a Honda Fit - but you should look for something with a dynamic weight rating of 180lbs or so.

What made you move on from the soft top smittybilt. I am considering my first RTT and I have a family of 4. However, we may pair with an annex or the kids sleeping in the rig.
I think the Smittybilt was a great starter tent. I moved on because after so many nights in it, I wanted something that would set up and tear down much faster.
you have a V shape tent, ground or roof, get the kind with a bug screen little window at the point of the lower V. Air comes in and goes through the whole tent that way.
Yes and no...everything is a trade off. That design is harder to close up because you have to navigate two additional hinge points on the shell. Just depends what you think matters the most.
I have heard rooftop tents and other things being stolen, especially these days. Does Wingnuts make that a lot easier. So for those of you watching don't forget to take that into consideration over the convenience of a Wingnut
I've never heard of an RTT being stolen...but I'm not debating you that it happens. In that case, the wingnuts probably do make it easier for someone to get it off the rack...If crime is a concern, maybe figure out how to use a bike lock or something to secure it to your rig?
It seems like the Roofnest is only maybe -- that much better but costs ------ that much more. Do you ever water proof spray the fabric for extra protection?
The Roofnest is a very good tent no doubt in my mind. It's is much more expensive though. I haven't ever sprayed my tents..but living in SW Idaho, I don't really get too much rain, so I've never thought I've needed more that what comes with the tent.
This was really helpful. I'm considering getting a RTT but I'm not convinced. In terms of overall convenience for an extended trip with daily excursions, isn't easier to have a ground tent that doesn't require being closed up and set up again every day? What about those off-camber situations where an extra 120lbs up top just might cause serious problems? I guess it comes down to preference and defined needs. Since bears and other critters can climb ladders, there's no difference in safety.
I think in the end it boils down to personal preference. I love the speed at which I can set up and tear down camp. Our style of overlanding/camping is to head to a place every night, so RTTs fit. The extra weight is something I manage, but other than rock crawling trails, it hasn't stopped me from going anywhere. Some ground tents are fantastic though...really just trying to find what fits your style best.
RTT will only help you from certain ground critters like wolf, deer, bison, hog, and etc. Unless your RTT is mounted 15+ feet above the ground, an adult brown bear will have no problem reaching for you just by standing up.
Hey Will, do either of them come with mounts to the jeep, did you have to buy those separately, did you buy a separate roof rack to mount to? I have been looking into getting a tent for mine and not sure how these attach. Thanks
They both come with mounting hardware to attach to a roof rack. The thing you need to look at is the dynamic load rating of your rack. Make sure it can handle the weight of the tent. Generally you need to buy a separate rack or load bars.

@@dupton8000 I use the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform with the Backbone system. You might look at their roof bars instead of the platform. Also, Adventure Rack Systems makes some great options for JLs...it's owned by MetalCloak (channel sponsor) and my buddy Chris has run their stuff for years and loves it. Good luck!!!!
Great video thanks Will, and hello from Boise. We have a Thule Tepui Explorer on our Tacoma and it works pretty well, other than the time it takes to set up and take down. I'm 6'2" and I'm not sure these wedge style tents will have as much interior space as the older style Tepuis like ours, although I think you said you're also over 6' ?. We leave it installed year-round because the truck is always garaged and its a total pain to take the RTT off and on the truck. I think what many people forget is that using a RTT and moving camp every day is a major pain. They are best if you're going to stay put for a few days in each place, IMHO. But your comparison is sure leaning me towards that TopOak. ;-)
These style wedge tents have enough room for you because of the extra pop out. I’m 6’1” and have lots of room. He cool thing about these RTTs is they are blazing fast to set up and tear down. My old soft shell took forever and was a mess to put up and take down…but these are really fast and easy. Nice to see comments from a fellow Boisean!
Good to know the space is adequate for taller guys in these wedge RTTs. I agree that the real downside of the older style is the setup and takedown time. I have to say that between your channel, Outdoor Auto, Revere Overland and Chase Christopher (another Boisean) you guys have absolutely the best channels on YT and they always have gems of info that I can use. @@dnf1812 Yes I did drill through the one on my 392 to mount the Roofnest. You could also take of the C channel mounting strips from the bottom of the tent, and re-mount them going the other direction. I've done both, and prefer to just drill through my rack.
Both tents seem to be pretty heavy compared to something similar like a Free Spirit Alpine lite which are 60 lbs lighter and priced between these two when they had their sale in November. Either tent would be a great addition and I think I would go with the Top Oak and get a good mattress with the difference.
I've looked at those. They are interesting tents. More latches to get it closed, not sure on whether you can keep bedding in there..but I like the design and style of it!
Was very close to getting the Topoak but went with the Aspen Lite during the recent sale. I intend to move the RTT from one 4x4 to another so I need the lightweight Aspen Lite.
@@MissionOffRoad I have the Harken Hoist system..and a Harbor Freight winch on my ceiling to make getting them on and off easy..but if I didn't, I'd have to call a friend every time.
The best Amazon clam shell is actually the nauturnest (all black one, good RUclips Review) The topoak is ok if you just have that pop out front (I don’t find it compelling)
Glad you are happy with your purchase. I think the pop out design is exponentially better than a standard wedge/clamshell design. The additional head room/foot room it provides makes it a much more comfortable space to sleep in, especially if you are 6 ft tall or more. I think everyone should buy the tent they want to buy, so I'm happy you found the right tent for you...this is just my opinion on the design differences.

I loved the Smittybilt as a starter tent. However, the set up and tear down was cumbersome. I also didn’t like the soft shell because it got me really dirty when putting it on. But I don’t regret having that tent. It’s just that the wedge and cantilever style tents are much easier to use.
Hi there. Im looking for a similar tent. However, the problem is I live in Canada. I looked at the shipping, customs, and other fees. It adds quite a bit to the price. On top of the Canadian dollar versus American dollar difference. Can you recommend a similar Amazon model, that is available on Amazon Canada?
Dang!! That’s a lot of tent for $1200. I was not a fan of the tan 1st gen smittybilt tents. The grey gen 2 were a lot nicer. I used a gen2 xl for years. Iv moved up to a wedge tent and love it. Great review on both.

I bought the Topoak RTT a few months back and just mounted it to my FJ last night. I inspected it when it was delivered and no damage. When I hook the ladder in place to climb up I noticed one of the locking tabs was dented in and will not lock in place. The other issue was the telescoping support arm that attaches to the “U” bar, the latch broke. I contacted Topoak last night and had a response when I woke up. They said I would have to replace the support arm, I’m hoping they send me one. They didn’t believe the ladder was broke and told me to get the lock tab to set with a tool? I’m still happy with the purchase and tent delivered for $1,598.
My telescoping support in my Roofnest broke too. Same in my smittybilt. Those things do not hold up well in the cold…especially the plastic connectors at each end. Odd ladder problem…I’ll ask Topoak to read this comment.

Would buy roofnest again have a sparrow xl, older one with the plastic roof. Only complaint is it’s not ready to be out in the sun 24/7. Started cracking year 2. Aluminum would fix this, which is the only complaint.

Another couple of points to consider based on several hundred nights in our RTT. How easy is it to re-apply some level of water proofing? Can you get the rain fly off and treat it on the ground / driveway or do you have to wrestle it in place? A another huge issue, what happens when you bust a screen door/window zipper? Can it be fixed? Can you get some section of the tent down for repair or do you have to, or can you even, get things apart for repair (This is a big one for us as we're in need of the door screen to be fixed, and yes, we tried to use the "repair" zippers" the teeth are just worn out). Not a big issue if you are just a few nights a year camping in the east, but a big issue for us as we go for months and months at a time camping in the dusty western states. We have the TS Alpha, which is not a wedge but basically the same sort of animal (we need the extra space as we have a dog that believes he deserves way more space than my wife and I combined :). You didn't mention the warranties, but that can also be a point to consider in the final decision. You do a great job presenting and this is a wonderful video. Looking fwd to the next. Thanks
Really really great points. I didn't talk about warranty or customer service. Honestly, Topoak has been really responsive...but that could be because they knew I was doing a video on it. I too have had to replace screens, zippers, and canvases in past tents...generally it's an insurance claim the companies make with the manufacturers...which is a pain. Both of these tents have zip in canvases, so replacing them isn't that big of a deal..but I can't speak to how the companies handle that yet. I hope folks read this comment because it's a good one.
One more point - That skylight is great for the 1st 6 months or so of use.... but turns to a yellow mess soon after. It also is a huge condensation collector. We have two rain fly's for our tent, one without and one with funky yellow plastic... You can guess which one goes camping now.
@@allensbbqrotisserie5989 Not sure. I think there are some other other options out there, but not sure of the brands or price. Alucab makes a good one. Kuat is coming out with something similar. But there are some "off-brands" out there too.
I had a tent very similar to the Alpah (desert armor tank xl). It was a massive step up from my smittybilt, but the newer wedge style tents are offering more room and super fast set up and tear down...so it's hard to think about going back.
yep! My friend has a wedge style and its really quick. The only thing the tuff stuff alpha style tents have is more room. We can do 2 adults and 2 smaller kids without feeling like a can of sardines. That said I think Ill be switching to a wedge style and probably one of the $1200 versions and put money into the mattress. :)@@Venture2Roam
@@RavensEyeOffroad My parents run a 2 person alpha and the the mattress looks really nice in those. On the wedges...we bought 6 inch exped foam inlfatable mattress...it's incredibly comfortable..but much more cumbersome to pack away because deflation is a pain.

When my wife and I first started looking into Jeeps and overlanding, I was convinced that I wanted a Gladiator, and I was seriously looking at the Mojave for a lot of the reasons that you mentioned ... then life happened, and we needed to get a vehicle unexpectedly, and the Gladiator was out of our budget at that moment in our lives, so we got a 2015 JKU Sahara w/manual trans. instead, and we love it! The Gladiator might still be out there for us at some point, but for now we are loving the JK! Thanks for all of your great videos, we really enjoy them and have been inspired by you and some others to take a stab at this overlanding/camping/outdoor adventure thing. Keep it up!@@Venture2Roam
I think the roof rack is more important than the rig. Just make sure the dynamic weight rating if your cross bars or rack is enough for the weight of the tent.
I didn't cover that because I didn't think I was equipt to do so. Customer support is big company vs little company. Topoak, being the little company is kind a smaller outfit, but they have been very responsive. Roofnest is larger and has more infrastructure, so you can chat with them on FB or other places pretty easily. Topoak has a 2 year warranty, but I don't know exactly what it entails. Not sure about Roofnest's warranty, which is why I didn't mention..didn't want in tip the scales just because I didn't have the info.
Love my RTT, but the price of these brands are getting insane. My opinion...I just don't see the value of the expensive option. Especially since I use a comfy Hest air mattress in all my tents. Now, paying silly money for a camping trailer...totaly justified😅😂(yeah, i did that)
I got my Roofnest falcon pro for $2500 direct through Roofnest as an open box, so that’s another option to consider to save money. Same warranty and everything, it did arrive with a very small dent on the roof, I called them, they offered to exchange it or just give me $300 back, I took the cash because it was tiny, superficial, and nobody will ever see it.
That's a smoking deal on those tents. I looked at doing that when I got mine, but none were available. At that price, it's hard not recommend going with the Roofnest if you can afford it.
Dang. They keep selling out. You might go to their website instead - last time I emailed the owner he said a shipment was coming in soon and you can still buy it...it just has a delayed shipping date.
i made the mistake of buying an Ikamper.. definitely not the quality i expected. worst most expensive tent on the market. customer service was awful . dont ever buy
I wouldn’t call it a rip off..it’s a nice tent…but more of a premium product at a premium price. I’d like to see the price come down on it though, and competition will help that happen.
please stop talking in inches and pounds, or at least write on screen during editing the equivalent, the other 95% of the world that uses the metric system will be put off by that. 180 pounds it's incredibly heavy, considering there's rooftop tents out there, that costs less, that are around 40/50kg.
I forget I have international viewers , but the vast majority of my audience is from the U.S. I’ll take this request into consideration. As for the weight of the tent…please convert 40/50kg to lbs so I know what that means 😂. I agree that 180lbs is heavy..there are more tents coming on the market that are lighter. I’m hoping to be able to review them as well.
I wish they would make a flip up floor so you could climb in from your vehicle instead of needing to climb the outside ladder

I agree, I started by renting tents to see what I liked. When I made my big purchase I went with the FSR EVO2. No tent is perfect. I gained a better insulated blackout tent than the soft sides I tried, but miss the skylight.
It pays to know what trade-offs matter to you! With RTTs it's really hard to get that info before buying. Renting sounds like a great option.

Curious though on limits to leaving sleepings bags and or pillows in either of the RTT's and being able to still close them. Do both, either, or neither allow you to leave lets say two 20 degree rated sleepings bags and a pillow in there?
Yes, both do. The Roofnest has a bit more room to leave bedding, but what you described will fit in either.

One advantage that I can see from the RoofNest is the bar that crosses the skylight might actually act as a ridge line keeping the water from pooling on top. Probably not a huge problem given the slope of the tent but every little bit helps?
I never thought of that…you might be right. Intrepid has it in the same place, but designed the sky light around it.
Bought a Roofnest falcon, i must admit it is an awesome tent but i quickly realized I'm too tall for a wedge style tent. James Baroud makes the PERFECT tents IMO but that price is gut wrenching lol. If you're gonna buy a wedge style tent just make sure you're short enough to sleep comfortably

I will be doing more tent videos this year, more comparisons...I like the idea of doing a water proofing test.
I think frequency of use is also a big determining factor, I only get out 3 to 4 times a year if I'm lucky, for me the cheaper tent would be a no brainer. At this point I'm using a ground tent and am pretty happy with it, but since I bought my Gladiator and put a cap on it I've been considering a RTT. I also found a cap that is an exact copy of the Smart Cap at half the price.

Anyways - you mentioned you take the tent off often; how do you store it? I plan on using both my rigs interchangeably with 1 tent until things change, so an off / on / store system is rattling around in the back of my mind.

I swear Google is spying on us somehow...or they've figured out how to read out minds. I use a Harken Hoist system. I have two in my garage so I can hang both tents. It take 10-15 mins to get them on and off. Maybe I should make a video about lol.

One question/subject I had that was not talked about or answered in this video is how much weight can you carry on the top of the wedge, sing the provided cross bars? If I went that route I'd need to move my two riffle-carrying cases (harbor freight low profile) that I used to carry recovery tools and whatnot while on a trip as well as my solar panel to the top of the tent's shell. I don't overload these gun cases because evidently center of gravity dictates that a lot of weight on top is not that good but still I'd want to know if the two gas struts would take the weight. You'll have to check the websites on these two tents..but I think it's 150lbs...so quite a lot. Plenty of capacity for those cases I think.
iKamper Sky Camp seems like the best of all. Hard shell, large space & can keep bedding inside. Plus insulation kit available
Totally different category of tent though. Lots of trade offs with the iKamper style. There’s no one perfect tent.

You can add mattress thickness to the stock mattress. Don’t see the value in paying 3x the money for a tent that does the same thing and may be swapped out prior to its wearing out.

Would love if you test the aerodynamics (sense of drag, wind noise, AND fuel efficiency) of the two tents. It would be interesting to know if the roof lines of the falcon pro make a difference. I assume the difference is subtle. However, for regular long haul trips improvements of 2 mpg might be worth the higher cost of the falcon pro. ???
Really great point. I haven’t tested that, but I imagine it does make some difference. The stamped aluminum design is very well designed.
Out of both of these.. I i prefer the FSR aspen lite. Very similar. But lighter and air up foam mattress.
Great recommendation. Personally, I haven't found a blow up foam mattress that I like though. They are more comfortable, but take forever to deflate...unless the FSR one is fast to deflate? I value speed to break down camp a lot...and these two are lightning fast.

Hi, what’s your opinion on say the Napier Z sport truck bed tent? I’m at a crossroads bc truck bed tents have way more room; however in bad weather the RTP obviously is way better.

FYI: I own a Ram Rebel 1500 but crew cab= great but a short 5 7’ bed. The bed tents do include/ enclose the tailgate do that’s another 2 feet etc

I've never used a truck bed tent, but have a few friends who've used them. I think they are a good lightweight, affordable option. My two cents is this. If you are an occasional camper, like just a few times per year, the truckbed tent is a great option because it's so easy to stow and you don't need any additional racks, etc to use it. If you are going out many times throughout the year, an RTT or something like a Go Fast/Alucab/Super Pacific bed tent set up are fantastic. In general I'd say start with the most inexpensive, easiest option...I guarantee that if you like the lifestyle - you're going to iterate on your setup anyway.

No I don’t. I think you’d be squished. You might look at the Colorado 4X4 that pops the hinged angle up and allows for a bigger footbox

You can put a roof top tent on almost anything as long as you have a rack or crossbars that support the dynamic weight of the tent. I don't really know what rack you should buy for a Honda Fit - but you should look for something with a dynamic weight rating of 180lbs or so.

What made you move on from the soft top smittybilt. I am considering my first RTT and I have a family of 4. However, we may pair with an annex or the kids sleeping in the rig.
I think the Smittybilt was a great starter tent. I moved on because after so many nights in it, I wanted something that would set up and tear down much faster.
What roof rack did you buy to mount the one on your Rubicon? Or does that mounting system come with the tent system?
I have the Rhino Rack Backbone system with the Pioneer Platform. It's super strong and sturdy, but honestly a really pain for mounting tents.
you have a V shape tent, ground or roof, get the kind with a bug screen little window at the point of the lower V. Air comes in and goes through the whole tent that way.
Yes and no...everything is a trade off. That design is harder to close up because you have to navigate two additional hinge points on the shell. Just depends what you think matters the most.
I have heard rooftop tents and other things being stolen, especially these days. Does Wingnuts make that a lot easier. So for those of you watching don't forget to take that into consideration over the convenience of a Wingnut
I've never heard of an RTT being stolen...but I'm not debating you that it happens. In that case, the wingnuts probably do make it easier for someone to get it off the rack...If crime is a concern, maybe figure out how to use a bike lock or something to secure it to your rig?
It seems like the Roofnest is only maybe -- that much better but costs ------ that much more.
Do you ever water proof spray the fabric for extra protection?
The Roofnest is a very good tent no doubt in my mind. It's is much more expensive though. I haven't ever sprayed my tents..but living in SW Idaho, I don't really get too much rain, so I've never thought I've needed more that what comes with the tent.
This was really helpful. I'm considering getting a RTT but I'm not convinced.
In terms of overall convenience for an extended trip with daily excursions, isn't easier to have a ground tent that doesn't require being closed up and set up again every day? What about those off-camber situations where an extra 120lbs up top just might cause serious problems? I guess it comes down to preference and defined needs. Since bears and other critters can climb ladders, there's no difference in safety.
I think in the end it boils down to personal preference. I love the speed at which I can set up and tear down camp. Our style of overlanding/camping is to head to a place every night, so RTTs fit. The extra weight is something I manage, but other than rock crawling trails, it hasn't stopped me from going anywhere. Some ground tents are fantastic though...really just trying to find what fits your style best.
RTT will only help you from certain ground critters like wolf, deer, bison, hog, and etc. Unless your RTT is mounted 15+ feet above the ground, an adult brown bear will have no problem reaching for you just by standing up.

I have the front runner load bars in the rack. Makes putting on an RTT pretty easy.

They both come with mounting hardware to attach to a roof rack. The thing you need to look at is the dynamic load rating of your rack. Make sure it can handle the weight of the tent. Generally you need to buy a separate rack or load bars.

The vertical removable pockets are for slippers, if it gets dirty you can wash it in the sink

Great video thanks Will, and hello from Boise. We have a Thule Tepui Explorer on our Tacoma and it works pretty well, other than the time it takes to set up and take down. I'm 6'2" and I'm not sure these wedge style tents will have as much interior space as the older style Tepuis like ours, although I think you said you're also over 6' ?. We leave it installed year-round because the truck is always garaged and its a total pain to take the RTT off and on the truck. I think what many people forget is that using a RTT and moving camp every day is a major pain. They are best if you're going to stay put for a few days in each place, IMHO. But your comparison is sure leaning me towards that TopOak. ;-)
These style wedge tents have enough room for you because of the extra pop out. I’m 6’1” and have lots of room. He cool thing about these RTTs is they are blazing fast to set up and tear down. My old soft shell took forever and was a mess to put up and take down…but these are really fast and easy. Nice to see comments from a fellow Boisean!
Good to know the space is adequate for taller guys in these wedge RTTs. I agree that the real downside of the older style is the setup and takedown time. I have to say that between your channel, Outdoor Auto, Revere Overland and Chase Christopher (another Boisean) you guys have absolutely the best channels on YT and they always have gems of info that I can use. @@dnf1812 Yes I did drill through the one on my 392 to mount the Roofnest. You could also take of the C channel mounting strips from the bottom of the tent, and re-mount them going the other direction. I've done both, and prefer to just drill through my rack.
Both tents seem to be pretty heavy compared to something similar like a Free Spirit Alpine lite which are 60 lbs lighter and priced between these two when they had their sale in November. Either tent would be a great addition and I think I would go with the Top Oak and get a good mattress with the difference.
I've looked at those. They are interesting tents. More latches to get it closed, not sure on whether you can keep bedding in there..but I like the design and style of it!
Was very close to getting the Topoak but went with the Aspen Lite during the recent sale. I intend to move the RTT from one 4x4 to another so I need the lightweight Aspen Lite.

The best Amazon clam shell is actually the nauturnest (all black one, good RUclips Review) The topoak is ok if you just have that pop out front (I don’t find it compelling)
Glad you are happy with your purchase. I think the pop out design is exponentially better than a standard wedge/clamshell design. The additional head room/foot room it provides makes it a much more comfortable space to sleep in, especially if you are 6 ft tall or more. I think everyone should buy the tent they want to buy, so I'm happy you found the right tent for you...this is just my opinion on the design differences.
Buddy, if the skylight and extra headroom aren't appealing, then I really don't know what you're looking for in a rooftop tent.

I loved the Smittybilt as a starter tent. However, the set up and tear down was cumbersome. I also didn’t like the soft shell because it got me really dirty when putting it on. But I don’t regret having that tent. It’s just that the wedge and cantilever style tents are much easier to use.

Dang!! That’s a lot of tent for $1200. I was not a fan of the tan 1st gen smittybilt tents. The grey gen 2 were a lot nicer. I used a gen2 xl for years. Iv moved up to a wedge tent and love it. Great review on both.

I bought the Topoak RTT a few months back and just mounted it to my FJ last night. I inspected it when it was delivered and no damage. When I hook the ladder in place to climb up I noticed one of the locking tabs was dented in and will not lock in place. The other issue was the telescoping support arm that attaches to the “U” bar, the latch broke. I contacted Topoak last night and had a response when I woke up. They said I would have to replace the support arm, I’m hoping they send me one. They didn’t believe the ladder was broke and told me to get the lock tab to set with a tool? I’m still happy with the purchase and tent delivered for $1,598.
My telescoping support in my Roofnest broke too. Same in my smittybilt. Those things do not hold up well in the cold…especially the plastic connectors at each end. Odd ladder problem…I’ll ask Topoak to read this comment.

Would buy roofnest again have a sparrow xl, older one with the plastic roof. Only complaint is it’s not ready to be out in the sun 24/7. Started cracking year 2. Aluminum would fix this, which is the only complaint.
I still really like my Roofnest. It's a nicer tent..also more expensive, but I don't regret buying it!

Does the top oak have enough room to leave sleeping bags or bedding in it while closed?
Yes. It has room for sleeping bags and pillows.
Another couple of points to consider based on several hundred nights in our RTT. How easy is it to re-apply some level of water proofing? Can you get the rain fly off and treat it on the ground / driveway or do you have to wrestle it in place? A another huge issue, what happens when you bust a screen door/window zipper? Can it be fixed? Can you get some section of the tent down for repair or do you have to, or can you even, get things apart for repair (This is a big one for us as we're in need of the door screen to be fixed, and yes, we tried to use the "repair" zippers" the teeth are just worn out). Not a big issue if you are just a few nights a year camping in the east, but a big issue for us as we go for months and months at a time camping in the dusty western states. We have the TS Alpha, which is not a wedge but basically the same sort of animal (we need the extra space as we have a dog that believes he deserves way more space than my wife and I combined :). You didn't mention the warranties, but that can also be a point to consider in the final decision.

Really really great points. I didn't talk about warranty or customer service. Honestly, Topoak has been really responsive...but that could be because they knew I was doing a video on it. I too have had to replace screens, zippers, and canvases in past tents...generally it's an insurance claim the companies make with the manufacturers...which is a pain. Both of these tents have zip in canvases, so replacing them isn't that big of a deal..but I can't speak to how the companies handle that yet. I hope folks read this comment because it's a good one.
One more point - That skylight is great for the 1st 6 months or so of use.... but turns to a yellow mess soon after. It also is a huge condensation collector. We have two rain fly's for our tent, one without and one with funky yellow plastic... You can guess which one goes camping now.

I had a tent very similar to the Alpah (desert armor tank xl). It was a massive step up from my smittybilt, but the newer wedge style tents are offering more room and super fast set up and tear down...so it's hard to think about going back.
yep! My friend has a wedge style and its really quick. The only thing the tuff stuff alpha style tents have is more room. We can do 2 adults and 2 smaller kids without feeling like a can of sardines. That said I think Ill be switching to a wedge style and probably one of the $1200 versions and put money into the mattress. :)@@Venture2Roam
@@RavensEyeOffroad My parents run a 2 person alpha and the the mattress looks really nice in those. On the wedges...we bought 6 inch exped foam inlfatable mattress...it's incredibly comfortable..but much more cumbersome to pack away because deflation is a pain.
@Venture2Roam the alpha mattress is ok. I took it out after our Utah trip to clean it and it's just 4" thick foam. Not much to it honestly.

How thick is the Top oak when closed? On their website it says its 4.75' but the Roofnest says 8'

When my wife and I first started looking into Jeeps and overlanding, I was convinced that I wanted a Gladiator, and I was seriously looking at the Mojave for a lot of the reasons that you mentioned ... then life happened, and we needed to get a vehicle unexpectedly, and the Gladiator was out of our budget at that moment in our lives, so we got a 2015 JKU Sahara w/manual trans. instead, and we love it! The Gladiator might still be out there for us at some point, but for now we are loving the JK! Thanks for all of your great videos, we really enjoy them and have been inspired by you and some others to take a stab at this overlanding/camping/outdoor adventure thing. Keep it up!@@Venture2Roam

I think the roof rack is more important than the rig. Just make sure the dynamic weight rating if your cross bars or rack is enough for the weight of the tent.
What about customer support, or warranty?
I didn't cover that because I didn't think I was equipt to do so. Customer support is big company vs little company. Topoak, being the little company is kind a smaller outfit, but they have been very responsive. Roofnest is larger and has more infrastructure, so you can chat with them on FB or other places pretty easily. Topoak has a 2 year warranty, but I don't know exactly what it entails. Not sure about Roofnest's warranty, which is why I didn't mention..didn't want in tip the scales just because I didn't have the info.
Love my RTT, but the price of these brands are getting insane. My opinion...I just don't see the value of the expensive option. Especially since I use a comfy Hest air mattress in all my tents. Now, paying silly money for a camping trailer...totaly justified😅😂(yeah, i did that)
Companies like TopOak are putting good pressure on the market. Prices have to come down I think.

No differences as far I'm concerned, I only sleep in it so yeh cheaper the better
I got my Roofnest falcon pro for $2500 direct through Roofnest as an open box, so that’s another option to consider to save money.
Same warranty and everything, it did arrive with a very small dent on the roof, I called them, they offered to exchange it or just give me $300 back, I took the cash because it was tiny, superficial, and nobody will ever see it.
That's a smoking deal on those tents. I looked at doing that when I got mine, but none were available. At that price, it's hard not recommend going with the Roofnest if you can afford it.

Stainless steel costs more than rust prone painted steel. Stainless hardware is points for Roofnest.

But, is the RoofNest $3,000 better....?
That’s really subjective to the buyer I think. The Roofnest is a great tent, but it’s not a budget tent.

The long pockets on each side look like you could store your flip flops or shoes in them one side for wife one side for husband

i made the mistake of buying an Ikamper.. definitely not the quality i expected. worst most expensive tent on the market. customer service was awful . dont ever buy

I wouldn’t call it a rip off..it’s a nice tent…but more of a premium product at a premium price. I’d like to see the price come down on it though, and competition will help that happen.

please stop talking in inches and pounds, or at least write on screen during editing the equivalent, the other 95% of the world that uses the metric system will be put off by that.
180 pounds it's incredibly heavy, considering there's rooftop tents out there, that costs less, that are around 40/50kg.
I forget I have international viewers , but the vast majority of my audience is from the U.S. I’ll take this request into consideration. As for the weight of the tent…please convert 40/50kg to lbs so I know what that means 😂. I agree that 180lbs is heavy..there are more tents coming on the market that are lighter. I’m hoping to be able to review them as well.
