He couldn’t give her anything, she hates it, she escaped in her mind to create stories = FOLKLORE AND EVERMORE
"I Hate It Here" and the line "a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy" describes her time with Joe during the pandemic as the relationship was really starting to die, imho. Specifically, it describes her time writing folklore, evermore (the "secret gardens"), and Midnights (the "lunar valleys") where she escaped to her fantasy worlds to cope with her life and her relationship. Like yeah, the pandemic sucked for everyone including Taylor who then needed to cancel the Lover tour, but it also further pushed her indoors with her depressed, anxious, introverted boyfriend. I think Taylor pushing Joe to write some music with her was one of her ways of trying to connect with him ("Pulled him in tighter each time he was drifting away" from So Long, London) and trying to get him out of his shell (trying to "drill the safe" of him, again from So Long, London). She really wanted him to be a poet who would share the deepest parts of himself with her, but at the end of it all he was just kinda a boring, stiff, closed off dude (a "finance guy"). So as this relationship was dying, she kept turning to her imagination to help her escape and process.

I like this interpretation! My own one was that she's talking to a random person Forrest Gump style. A finance guy. And she's begging this random person to wax poetry. To find his own escapism if that makes sense. It being a life story she's telling a guy explains to me why it opens the song and then closes it.

For me, volume one is raw, chaotic, and dappled with the first signs of self-awareness in the middle of the storm, when the wounds and experiences are still fresh. Volume two is pensive and self-reflective; conducting the autopsy after the dust has settled, coming to terms with the events, healing and moving on. The differences in the production of each part reflect this contrast. Absolutely love this project.

I swear the anthology gets better the more you listen to it. I was so exhausted the first time that I heard it cuz it was freaking 2 am lol, but I’ve been listening to the whole album over and over, and it gets more beautiful and meaningful each time. Saying "thank you" to a bully is a way of letting them know that they ended up helping you when they tried to destroy you and that's NOT a good thing for them. And Taylor knows that. I like this interpretation! My own one was that she's talking to a random person Forrest Gump style. A finance guy. And she's begging this random person to wax poetry. To find his own escapism if that makes sense. It being a life story she's telling a guy explains to me why it opens the song and then closes it.
i think she asks the person to tell her something awful in a clever way like how a poet would do and in the meanest way like how finance guys are (ex: wolf of wallstreet)
For me, volume one is raw, chaotic, and dappled with the first signs of self-awareness in the middle of the storm, when the wounds and experiences are still fresh. Volume two is pensive and self-reflective; conducting the autopsy after the dust has settled, coming to terms with the events, healing and moving on. The differences in the production of each part reflect this contrast. Absolutely love this project.

I swear the anthology gets better the more you listen to it. I was so exhausted the first time that I heard it cuz it was freaking 2 am lol, but I’ve been listening to the whole album over and over, and it gets more beautiful and meaningful each time. It was a grower like to me folklore and evermore were.
And you’re so right, I hate it here… the people who understand how it feels, they get it. This is a cruel world, where they tell you to toughen up… but for the gentle and sensitive, it’s a harsh place. Sometimes it feels you just cant connect. Like you saying something out there and ruining the mood and feeling why are you even there, you just wanna run away to your own world back where you have fun, in your own mind and on your own.
