It's not about Singapore Airlines or Asian airlines... but it's about mostly Asian culture, especially Singapore.
Currently a CC in SQ, it’s not my first job so I must say that I’m handling it better than I would if I joined 10 years ago. Furthermore, I’ve heard from seniors that (most) of the (notorious) people have mellowed down since the pandemic. To tell you the truth, before I joined, I was petrified about the culture reading comments from Reddit and whatnot. And after flying, tbh, I think that a lot of it could be how the negative experience is being magnified. I’ve had good seniors, I also have had bad ones. But I let the bad ones roll of my shoulders after feeling the anger because it speaks more about them than you. There are many that are nice, many that share the same perspective as me (treating everyone with kindness and respect). Of course there are “evil people” who try to get you down, but you can bump into such people anywhere. I worked in an office job before, and it was bad in my opinion for my preference. I deal with toxic people everyday (the same ones), for flights I see them maybe 3 times (if unlucky and you get rostered with them). I treat my juniors better because I believe the change start with me and also I try my best to help change the culture, it’s a David and Goliath battle, but I think that it can still be better. Overall I enjoy the job; it IS labour intensive, but it’s still less stressful than my previous office job that paid way lesser. I see my family lesser, but I manage. It’s all about your personal management.
As for toxicity, I will admit there are some rules I find ridiculous. And there are some lame people around who have nothing better to do and are so bitter about their lives that they don’t realise how they are to others. Some people make up their own ones and don’t even have the balls to tell you that it’s “wrong”. But like I said, it speaks more about them than you and usually such people have lesser “friends” and you strike up an “alliance” with other “victims”. I don’t believe that the seniors are always right, but they will treat you better if you aren’t aggressive (they can change a whole 180). And I’ve learnt that such battles aren’t worth fighting because I’m too old for that crap. I just be copacetic and move along, and just be wary when you fly with them again. Not all hope is lost; there are some lost causes definitely, but like I said, it speaks more about them than you and with time, these dinosaurs will be retiring along with the prehistoric toxic culture they were brought up with in the company
Toxic culture is all over the world not just SQ. Would be naive to think it’s only happening in some airlines.
The thing to remember is that, for the majority of customers, flight attendants are the face of the airline. They and gate agents are the people that the vast majority of passengers deal with. Everyone else, including senior management, are support staff. If you don't touch customers, then you support those who do. Management tends to forget that. Flight attendants should be paid accordingly.
We get paid enough for our job.
The seniority part is similar in UAE... you won't dare talk down to your seniors or give your opinion... that is how the game works, at least Emirates, is massively toxic. It's really designed for the early 20s folks with not much experience and zero concept on their heads. Cabin Crew jobs are romanticized but in reality it is far from it...

@theaminhd3946 thats very true..ive flown with EK for 4y. They now go for the early 20s as they are easy to manipulate with their controversial policies. There stories everywhere on how EK has a toxic environment behind the scenes..take it or leave it. In the end its the UAE, there's no such thing as workers "rights". It's definitely a good experience but not a long term one
@@filipepedro8272 good money, if you invest wisely. Tell me a job that pays you so well straight out of college if you aren’t in US. Great opportunity for many people. And I actually enjoy the job tho
1. Every look like glamorous job is not so glamorous behind the scene. That even includes pop stars, actors, etc.
2. Asian culture, one usually doesn’t tell your boss what to do. It’s kind of respect, but one can bring opinions in group discussions.
3. Bullying is personal characteristics not a company culture.
I hear that's the case in most airlines in the Middle East.
A few videos I've seen that were made by former SIA cabin crew have said that the pay is not that good. They get a very low 'base' pay, and most of the pay they get comes from 'work' hours That is, when they're actually on the plane doing their job.
SQ is an airline with a very strong reputation for great service and the people who fly them have very high expectations. That’s why the senior crew are “strict” because they have to uphold that standard and make sure all their crew are providing that world class service SQ is known for. You have to be tough and strict. If you can’t handle this type of criticism, then you should consider applying for an airline that doesn’t have a reputation for being the “best”.
Oh boi you know nothing about seniority in airlines. They bully you just because they can and just because they are in the mood to make their junior’s life miserable. Sure being strict to maintain the company standards is good, but those who works in airlines know it’s more than that :)
I think toxic cultures can also be seen at the health care facilities especially the nurses.
i always wonder how does women stay in makeup for sooo long hours. i as a girl cant stay in makeup after 2 hours or less plus when I flew with an airline i saw flight attendants looked super tired but still smiled you can say forced themselves to smile. i can really understand how hard this job is.
Yep, part of the job. Some flights are 14h + and they’ll have to replenish the make up during flight..
I've read news and viewed many vlogs that the culture in Middle Eastern Airlines is very toxic, so I really don't know why you said that the culture in Singapore Airlines is different from ME Airlines, which is supposedly collaborative. I'm sure you've heard or read recently about how toxic Qatar Airways is, and how its management treated its staff. Etihad staff culture, I gathered some time back was pretty toxic too. I know that Emirates gave its staff huge bonuses post covid recovery, but so did Singapore Airlines, both being among only a handful of airlines rewarding its staff handsomely for their post covid recovery. Finally, regarding Asian and Middle Eastern culture, both are quite similar in respecting authority and seniority. So again, I don't quite know why you said it's different for Middle Eastern. In fact, I think, imo, Middle Eastern is stricter, being Islamic.
Generally, being in a customer service position iin itself is tough, especially when a company aims to be the best. Being a flight steward is even tougher as you are flying odd and possibly long hours in the air, stuck in a metal tube with pax who could be really tiresome. It definitely is not an easy job, despite the supposed glamour.

Wizzair is horror... they give you random size uniform then tell you to tailor it on your own... and if its small... then its your responsibility... as if i am the ceo of airline and they are working for me. The management is not nice.

True 👍 Just look at their sarong kebaya. Different colours of the background of the fabric due to the rank of the flight crew.

I’m from brazil and when it comes to juniors and seniors it’s the same thing, we should be afraid of them at all times, just keep our heads down and pretend nothing’s happening. Hierarchy all the way as strong as it could be. I’m trying Etihad this year, just waiting for the confirmation on the AD date, wish me luck ❤️
Singapore is fantastic Arline ! This is the business and Singapore Arline doing fantastic job ! But I heard that many Arline crew is very rude to hotel workers ? Like housekeeping etc

125-135 flying hours is normal in QR😂. I know a F1 crew she posted on her instagram story about her highest flying hour and it was 165.

Hi Alexander George to it soft on what your trying to say in Gulf countries they work as a team those they have masters but when it comes to manual process they work as a team thank you
They used to force employees change the contract and there will be a termination if employees don’t agree to change. It is true they enjoy bullying people around. However, one of my friend said he/she is very proud of SIA.
For me I try to be neutral, those friends become parents so they can’t loose face, must practice “proud & honor” feelings. It’s good & bad, nothing is perfect

I think you need to really have an objective viewpoint. Stop being biased, and look properly.
There was a documentary on SQ sometime back regarding the crew, and some toxic behaviour.
However!!! This is NOT limited to just cabin crew.
Although, you need to look at EY/EK/AA etc ALL airlines, and not just say oh well we don’t have here at…..😒.
I do understand cabin crew role is NOT glamorous, and it is hard work.
Maybe you could share a bit more of both sides. The good and bad, because customer service starts from reservations to cabin crew.
Not all cabin crew are nice either.
The best airport, period.

5’5 is quite low my friend I’m not gonna lie. Chances are slim, but as I always say, there’s always a chance.

Some like the lifestyle some don't. Leave it to the wannabes to make their choices. Toxic culture is everywhere. Some more than others. Office , airlines , anywhere. Probably you are already jaded with the job , and you have moved on. Enjoy and Cheers !

Singapore Airlines 🇸🇬 is still the best
People forget that ME carriers that flourish on a global standard today was due to SQ crew who resigned and joined them, imparting SQ skills in the 80's. SQ staff was a super hot commodity. That's how they eventually become world-class.
Another note, 120 flying hours isn't so bad considering that being based in Singapore, majority of our duty period is at least 8hours one-way.
it happens to any airline here in southeast Asia. we do not follow European or western style. we have seniority and levels of heirarchy unlike the other airlines. maintain that SQ. no need change. all airlines does that.

It’s in all airlines…..and it should be so, to a certain degree….due to the amount of steep learning curve required in aviation. Aviation isn’t for everyone……..due to its high-intensity investment and potentially dangerous conditions, steep learning curve is required…….thise who can’t hack it, is politely recommended to leave this industry, due to its potentially dangerous conditions.
If there’s decompression at 35,0000 ft…..you literally have secs to make a difference between life and death of hundreds if people.
If you don’t meet the stringent requirements…..please do not proceed. Please resign, before you could inadvertently kill hundreds of people.
