i once witnessed a senior female crew having a go at a junior female FA in the galley (i was in First Class of a 747 Malaysia Airline, flight from LA to KL via Taipei).. i was just waking up, n over heard the quarell (as my seat was at the back,near the galley). then i paged n asked for some water, the junior came n can tell she had watery eyes, but still managed to put a smile. she took my order n gave me my water. after we touched down n taxi at Taipei airport, before i left while waiting for the dooor to open, i told her (in front of her senior), “ dont stop smilling, coz u have a very beautiful face and a beautiful heart”…. i saw the senior’s face like black even though she was smilling n i ignored her when she said “thank u see u again”… that senior has an attitude problem, cannot be an example to the juniors. this was back in 2003….

Febby I have been in Management for an International company for more than 40 years, I need to tell you that Bully behavior was never tolerated in my departments, and every 3 months I had the workers give me a review of their supervisors, then the supervisors reviewed their managers, the managers reviewed their next line in authority, my reason for this was because I had learned that people dont truly quit companies, they quit managers, so I informed my managers and supervisors to love them or lose them and it worked for me, additionally I did one-on-one private exit interviews as to the reasons that someone wanted to resign so that I could constantly improve our organization. Don't ever allow another person to not see the value in you, they actually dont value themselves enough to open their eyes and accept your contributions to the team and to the organization. After graduated from the Uni, i really wanted to work as air crew to see the world before i work in the normal corporate world (or work as management trainee at some airlines) I applied to Garuda Indonesia, SQ, Emirates, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, to name a view. I got rejected from all of airlines that i applied for ( and keep all the rejected letters until today). I was so sad, but so grateful now to learn about the culture in an airline industry could be that toxic. And i realized later that it was not my path in life, instead i was accepted as management trainee in an oil company, then have a change to travel around the world as passenger in business class for more than 20 years now. So yeah, i learned not to be discouraged, there are other pathways that suit us better.

The purpose was you remembered for life the lessons learnt on your that second flight. That's why you can still tell your story today. It toughened you up for your future challenges in life. It shouldn't be classified as a dark episode. Personally, I have had a worse experience working as an intern in the construction industry full of rough and tough men. I faced Gordan Ramseys everywhere and everyday. I saw past 'bullying' for the invaluable trade lessons learnt from those experienced and hardworking men.

I came across your video today and I have to say well said. I was an ex crew member as well from that same particular airline. I’m usually very vocal I would say and I if I do see some form of bullying I would usually help my fss out no matter what the rank. But what I’ll never forget was, a flight where I was dead tired and I had to arrange the carts in the galley, and a senior crew member saw me all tired and said this exact words. ‘ my name, do you regret not studying hard enough’ at that moment I was like what… and I was so pissed. I’m not gonna reveal my education qualifications here but when I went back to the other galley the other stewardesses saw that anger in my face , and asked what happened and felt disgusted. Well jokes on him, I’m a pilot today. 👍🏼

a fellow cabin crew here! i just got back from my leaves and finished operating my flight to FRA. thru out the time operating i wasn't in my 100% to socialize. what matters to me is i did my job and no complaints from my guest. felt lonely when i reached the hotel. the crew member didn't asked me to go out with them as well despite them asking others in front of me. i am not offended cause i wasn't interacting much with the rest. for me, this flight i just want to get everything over with. i just feel indifferent at everything honestly. with my life in totality. flying has suck the light out of me and i am just unbothered with what's going on around me. i don't have the energy to even make new friends anymore bcs it's exhausting after a long-hour of attending to people. and its sad because you need a social life outside of work so that you're life is not just work. but its also hard because flying really does take a toll on your body so trying to even do smth outside of work really does takes effort. so glad i bumped into your video. thanks for sharing this, felt less lonelier now :") now i am just trying my best to focus on smashing my personal goals so i can quickly leave this job for good.

Omgggg!This is so true...I have watched so many videos on why people left their job as a flight attendant...but nobody has ever talked about these reasons...I can feel you,all the things which you mentioned are the ones why I left. These were the things which used to be in my mind all the time while I was working as a FA and I used to think that what am I even doing here why I am taking all this,but you can't do anything until you reach that level of seniority,and this is so true that you do become submissive when you are starting your career and for some people it takes time to come out of that. I work in the airline industry. In my previous job, I was managing the airline call center in SG, and wow, we hire really good-looking call consultants. The supervisor said, "yeah, most of them were ex-cabin crew." What I realised most of cabin crew couldn't find a proper job after decided to come on the ground, and some had to settle for call center.

It’s not just SIA, my brother works as an engineer for SIA Engineering, they have the same toxic culture, when he first started, he got bullied by his seniors. Good thing he pushed through and has been with them for over 8 years.
When I was in my cabin crew training my communication instructor would tell us to prepare three briefings per day and then give viva the next day which was very difficult for some of us. Since I was not well and couldn’t study the briefings because of being sick and my batchmates and I had to shift to our own flats/paying guest houses the next day due to which I had to pack and even give my viva the next day and hence I couldn’t perform well due to which my instructor shamed me for my age and insulted me before everyone in my batch that there are others who are doing it and I’m not doing it. She said I was giving excuses but I never gave excuses for not studying it was something genuine which was so terrifying. This instructor was very inhuman because she wanted us to smile throughout the viva whereas there are some who are so sweet and patient. Also, the training is very intense they don’t care about your health. They just want more and more employees so that they can exploit them.
I was definitely like you when I was new. I had my senior cabin crew with whom I used to fly a lot. She had some issues with me but never said what! So during my flight she used to scold me or try to take me down each time she could, during our briefing I was the center of her briefing where she used to ask all the questions to me. I cried 2 times because of her during my flights. Being new i never understood what was happening to me. At the end I told her she can talk with me if she has any problems. I shared this experience with my pilot friend and he told me what to do next it this shit happens again. In the end i changed my roster, because we have a fixed roster and just went to her opposite ones. Now I'm a cabin supervisor and whenever I hear such stories similar to my own experience without hesitation I tell them what to do and that it they need me I will go with them to the office. I try to keep a very friendly environment during my flights and respect the newest cabin crew members. It is not easy when you become a cabin crew and meeting such horrible people makes us feel just way worse. I hope one day all this to be gone for good and just enjoy our flights because in aviation unfortunately meeting people most of the time is, temporary meeting. ❤️
I'm a train attendant in the USA aboard long haul passenger trains. All of your points I have personally been subjected to. The bullying, gaslighting, gossip, physically & emotionally demanding work load! Another dark reality I will chime in is the absolutely un supportive management/supervisors. We are just a number to the company. Virtually zero appreciation & recognition for what we do.

The people that oversee and supervise even the senior cabin crew need to address the issue of bullying and emphasize that seniority does NOT give anyone a free pass to bully or reprimand a junior cabin crew, and discipline should be rendered to those senior cabin crew who engage in such unprofessional behavior rather than just ignored that behavior. It is the airline's responsibility to make sure ALL cabin crew (even the juniors) be made to feel comfortable while working. It might even reduce some of the turnover.
True, sadly in our current world, people in senior management only care about lining their own pockets more rather than sharing more of the profits with their employees on the ground. When profits are low, staff are cut off or bonuses removed, but when profits skyrocket, management pockets more shares and bonuses.
I remember being shocked by the way a Singapore Airlines stewardess spoke to me. She was serving coffee and I tried twice to take the cup off the tray she was holding, not realising that she had to give the cup to me. She snapped at me and kept moving the tray away. I get it, she was trying to minimise the risk of me being burned by hot coffee, but her manner wasn't good at all. Out of all the stewardesses in the economy cabin that flight, she was the least smiley. She didn't seem happy to be there. I don't know if she was in training, but she changed my opinion of Singapore Girls.
Ironically the things you said you were encouraged to do in your MBA class at the exact things you are meant to do as part of good CRM. Witness the number of fatal accidents that occurred when a junior member knew something was not right but failed to speak up because of the culture of “whatever the senior person says goes”. From a human factors standpoint that is extremely dangerous.
I’d say “what the senior says goes” would be applicable to the daily non-life threatening situations. when it comes to potentially fatal accidents, that's a different story. goal would always be to help address the situation. sadly most of the time, if the issue doesn't impact others, the injured crew members themselves choose to keep quiet cuz they don’t want to be grounded and take a pay cut. overall, agreed with you that everyone needs to feel safe to speak up regardless of how big or small the situation is. thanks for watching!
If you just worked less than a month and your boss or colleague already complain you are slow then I think that’s bullying already and you should really consider quitting the job already before it get worst . I mean if you are new and it’s normal that you will be slower .
I grew up in Malaysia flying MH and SQ as a passenger. I work for a US airline and in my 24th year. Everything you touched is present in all airlines. Yes, I was bullied as a Chinese speaker on my first China flight. The senior galley in business class complained about me being "slow" with the service and the purser just told me to eat my meal and just go on break. She didn't stand up for me. I went in the bathroom and splashed some water on my face and continued. It's shameful that bullying is tolerated and the union does nothing.

Diversity is not only within each country. The environment in the airline could resulted from this as well. During the time I was couched and prepared to become flight attendant in academy, I have been told that "there have been 2 main mindset that set a standard of flight attendant between Asian culture and Arabian culture. Those working in Asian environment are to be submissive and convey great sense of hospitality regardless of any situation. However, when it comes to Arabian culture, you are the one who decide and command and find whatever it best suit for each situation. This is quite contrast and I am certain that the situation you have been through has its own purpose for your own achievement. No one can be like you. ❤❤
Asides from getting bullied, sabotage, blamed, I have gotten fat shame many times. Yes my body is more muscular and doesn’t fit the Asian beauty standards perfectly, and whatever they said to me and to others does not really bother me. However I think it’s pretty toxic as it happens to many others as well. The most toxic is that whenever us crew fly with a nice (normal) crew we felt very very appreciative as we know it does not happens often. Shouldn’t it be the other way around 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I always dream to become a cabin crew, and currently i am working as a Customer Service Representative for 4 years and still counting in Airlines. When i was junior 20 years old, I remember i was crying because i failed about 2 times for XX Product Knowledge. My senior keep bulying me like I need to be fast, I need to remember this & that, write that, been asked and get scold when I cannot answer the question. Now I finally became a senior, and I dont do that to people because I knew how hard it is to be felt when I was young in Airline Industry. Im not saying im strict, but I teach people well those who really show effort to learn. Reading your journey as Ex- Cabin crew, sometimes this might be the answer why God still not give me my dream job. But anyway, I believe, everyone have different journey, different characters, and lets however be nice to people around. Thanks, I give you like for the video.

As a one of ex middle east major airline crew. I totally agree about your opinion. As I heard SQ has strict seniority that most of asia airlines have. My previous airline has black lists for those crew that bully many junior crew. Actually, they think thay are empowered when they become supervisor. My previous airline also has reporting system which has been misusing and crew can report each other. But there are still some nice supervisors exist. From my perspective, airlines which has high reputation has more pressures to maintain the high rank about the service and quality. My ex airline ceo always wants to get best airline award but SQ always took it as I heard.

Yes, 20 years ago I was an Sq crew and I was zapped.. I only flew for 2 years and I left. Not to mention night stops where stewards tried on the stewardess.. it is horrible

@febbylyan I don't regret my time but I would not have made it my career long term... eventhough when I left 2 years was considered senior and my team flights were great but there was the standby call ups where creepy stewards and pilots were just a nightmare... maybe I am old school so I did not like these things but all in all, it was good for a while
Actually bullying and gossiping is in every workplace, but then i dont understand why people normalise it, aside from that if you work in a foreign country, there is discrimination, but then you still keep going even its hard.

I don't know about point one. It sounds more like impatience than bullying. If she kept picking / referring to your mistakes, using hurtful words / actions etc every time she saw you, then that is bullying. I remember when I was in Pri 2, the teacher asked me to fold some papers because I was in the front row and close to her. My family hardly use English (this was back in the 70s). It was always Hokkien so I had not the slightest idea what the heck was "fold the papers". I sat there dumb and didn't move. Seeing that I didn't do anything, the teacher yelled impatiently. "Fold! Fold! Like this! You understand or not? Simple thing like folding." She then pushed the papers to my desk mate and told her to do it. No prizes for guessing how I felt then. I didn't cry though.
I don't think you get to decide what bullying means for someone though 😬😬 getting berated by a senior just because you handed them a drink from your hands instead of offering the whole tray kind of sounds like needless picking to me.. which is bullying 🤷♀️
Gossip is quite understandable. Especially when you get passengers who beat off over you, rumours of the cute stewardesses giving a teenager a handjob and her phone number, even rumours of a smuggling operation by crew. It’s no different than in any industry.
Personally I observed that Workplace Bullying seemed to be the Norm in Singapore’s work environments. Not just in the Airlines. Doesn’t help that the Unions there are basically for window dressings or simply just another COVERT HR department representing the companies’ interests instead. Alot of toxic work environment over there with no authentic protection for employees.

One thing I noticed during my cabin crew interview in Mumbai Indian that was HR team was good no doubt but they were very particular and only chose the girls who were skinny mind you they were okay to select girls who were low on bmi was they were skinny but still didn’t select girls who looked medium size or little chubby even though they were extremely healthy and were under bmi requirements. So yaa with my own first hand experience i can singapore airlines is one the airline promoting extreme beauty standards.
Not only flight attendant , i was waiter before ,senior bullied me because i am junior .but how i overcome this situation , i being asertif , when they did something not right i warning them report to management. Then they stop bully me

Emirates does the same thing you never fly with the same crew I think it probably has a lot to do with avoiding labor unions, or any talk of organization.
Asian passengers rate the flight attendant job similar to waiter / waiteress & does not visualize the pressures on the job to take care of the passengers . I being a frequent flier can immediately figure out a new & an experinecd flight attendant by the intial responses.
I was surprised you didnt talk about unruly passengers or harassment from male passengers, as I thought for sure that would be something youd encounter as a flight attendant
do not agree with the example you gave in point no.5. you definitely can't say no to the customer right away. even pretending to go one round and coming back with the no is better than rejecting upfront.

i work at the airport with cabin crews and the seniors especially the malaysian cabin crew seniors always have an attitude, even with me she was so rude. at my workplace they are known for always being rude. at the end of the at any and every workplace seniors will always have a higher hiearchy
I was expecting something specific to the Flight Attendant job itself, but most of the points you mentioned (with the exception of the physical demands) are generic things that people would encounter at just about any workplace. And given that the things you mentioned are very human-centric.. it'll be unique to each individual's experiences.. when you title it as "the DARK side of being a flight attendant" it's misleading, like you're speaking on behalf of the entire airline industry. It would be better if you titled it something along the lines of your own experiences as a flight attendant 🤔
and the work as cabin crew will never get as many praises, appreciation or as good enough. This constant nagging puts us and forces our mind to work in the cabin galley as basic rank flight attendants until we retire just so as to be appreciated . We cant expand our mind and knowledge if we are bombardment with these sort of nagging endlessly, non - stop. Please correct me if I am wrong @febbylyan
Thank you for this insight into the work culture of SIA. As a former flight attendant with Lufthansa German Airlines I am a little shocked how deeply Asian mentality impacts the way of how to interact with each other. I was a senior myself for many decades, but our company's culture was entirely different. We always appreciated the fresh input juniors can provide, new ideas of the juniors combined with the senior's experience, that is Lufthansa's cabin crew policy. And we all had to work 'according to the book', seniors and juniors alike. Another example: if I was granted a trip to Singapore (many flight hours, popular destination, longer rest time after returning home) I requested for January, and if I requested the same trip again next month, but a junior did not get that trip in January, the junior would be next in February. And btw.: the uniforms are all the same, except for the pursers, they have more stripes on the sleeves of their uniform. After 33 years of working as a flight attendant with Lufthansa, now I am enjoying my retirement and look back to all the pros and cons, not entirely without sentimentality 🙂😢

I'm so sorry that you had to exp the bullying & foolishness - you seem like a nice young woman. I was an FA for 12 yrs with a major (U.S.) carrier, and I witnessed alot of crap! So after 12 yrs, I resigned and went back to school and got my Masters in healthcare - nest decision ever. Although I loved (and still do) Aviation, I do NOT miss the ignorance, scheduling, the $$ or lack of, and the competitiveness - smh. I'd take an "irate" pax anyday, than work with some of my crew mates.. Not everyone was awful - I've met very nice /cool folks, and I've seen alot of cool places! It was a wonderful experience, but I wouldn't do it again!! and I would recommend every young woman or man, to just do your research , and don't just want the job because of the "glamour". I am glad you found this useful! I think for this one it all depends on the individual and how they honour their own commitment. I've heard (and seen) both good and bad things. I personally was already in a relationship before I started flying. now, a couple years after I quit, we are still together :)
Disgusting. SIA tolerates bullying. This is really bad Karma and sounds like toxic culture. Having said that, a smart organisation will see your value in good HR management. The point I am making here is even big organisations like SIA failed to realise that HR managers should be sensitive and alert to these issues and make corrections before it becomes toxic.
unfortunately, I feel like some of these cultures have already been ingrained for decades so they are normalized. I am hopeful that with more and more of the younger generation who is typically more outspoken joining the workforce, things would somehow improve for the better eventually
SIA will never give a accomodation to their cabin crew unlike the middle eastern five star airlines, SIA do not care about their employees. You will see when you travel with SQ, when you look at the cabin crew, you will see stress and unhappiness on their faces in spite of smiling at you, totally different that the vibes you got from Emirates, Qatar and Etihad cabin crew. SIA cabin crew wear the fake smile. Based on my experiences.
Whatever you mentioned in this video is the consequences of your job & the cliche things that happen in all workplace. The difference is, that other 'workplace' doesn't pay them to have high salary & allow them to experience luxurious lifestyle in multiple countries. Flight attendant nowadays complain about their job consequences which they should have considered before applying for it. No surprise & no sympathy 😒👎

Bullying and seniority system in this video surprised me because I thought those do exist only in Japan and Singapore Airlines is the company more open and westernized organization ...
I am not sure what the culture is like in Japanese airlines but I’ve heard similar stories from people working for other huge Asian airlines, so I am guessing the cultures might be similar
Id have fought the bully right on. Right then and there. Id make a commotion to let the bully know I will not be bullied/ take it lying down. There are right and not right ways to be an example / to mentor your fellow coworkers. You handed her the drink from the standpoint of one coworker to another. If she wanted to be a client then be a client and stop pretending to be a flight attendant. Id have raised hell to the point of that plane requiring to land somewhere as emergency landing. Id have made headlines as IDGAF. I do not give a f*ck. Come mess with me and find out. I work at SFO airport and I was bullied by the Security / TSA agent and I argued with the guy in front of all to see. He tried that again another time and I got him reprimanded.
Although it’s somewhat true, just a reminder that point ① zapping doesn’t only happen in SIA. In real world, any industry, any country, when we’re still new, it’s pretty common. I DON’T condone bullying, it’s just that sometimes we “live in a lala land” thinking that everybody is supposed to be nice to us. Any job, there will be good days & bad days. I get what you mean and I am with you conceptually. that said, before I joined the airline and after I left, I personally have never experienced point 1 to the same extent like I did when I was flying. I think it also has something to do with both the industry & company cultures which dictates what is normalized/acceptable. anyways, hope you are enjoying your time on ground after leaving the airline :)

She is just reminding people to be good and decent human beings to each other because once upon a time we were all new to something. Doesn't give people the excuse to be mean. If bullying is the norm culture then maybe ask yourself why it has to be. You could use a reminder too 😅
I know many F/A that love their job. One man meat is another man’s poison. I do agree that somehow we do get home sick. I have notice that cabin crew eating their meals standing in the gallery. Then again whatever happened in Rome stays in Rome. From the passengers point of view we do understand your predicament. I always thanks the crew for the excellent service they provide. Maybe it’s not a job to your liking but there are others that adores the freedom and the lifestyle. The rewards are plenty as a package including high bonus. Think about all the money you have made to be able to study and the exposure to be independent. I wish you well in the cooperate world. Equally stressful and if not more demanding.

I think because of the work environment, having flings and affairs become easier than in other industries so these do exist, but at the end of the day, it's a personal choice and there are definitely many folks who honour their relationships and do not play the game

i once witnessed a senior female crew having a go at a junior female FA in the galley (i was in First Class of a 747 Malaysia Airline, flight from LA to KL via Taipei).. i was just waking up, n over heard the quarell (as my seat was at the back,near the galley). then i paged n asked for some water, the junior came n can tell she had watery eyes, but still managed to put a smile. she took my order n gave me my water. after we touched down n taxi at Taipei airport, before i left while waiting for the dooor to open, i told her (in front of her senior), “ dont stop smilling, coz u have a very beautiful face and a beautiful heart”…. i saw the senior’s face like black even though she was smilling n i ignored her when she said “thank u see u again”… that senior has an attitude problem, cannot be an example to the juniors. this was back in 2003….

Febby I have been in Management for an International company for more than 40 years, I need to tell you that Bully behavior was never tolerated in my departments, and every 3 months I had the workers give me a review of their supervisors, then the supervisors reviewed their managers, the managers reviewed their next line in authority, my reason for this was because I had learned that people dont truly quit companies, they quit managers, so I informed my managers and supervisors to love them or lose them and it worked for me, additionally I did one-on-one private exit interviews as to the reasons that someone wanted to resign so that I could constantly improve our organization. Don't ever allow another person to not see the value in you, they actually dont value themselves enough to open their eyes and accept your contributions to the team and to the organization. After graduated from the Uni, i really wanted to work as air crew to see the world before i work in the normal corporate world (or work as management trainee at some airlines) I applied to Garuda Indonesia, SQ, Emirates, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, to name a view. I got rejected from all of airlines that i applied for ( and keep all the rejected letters until today). I was so sad, but so grateful now to learn about the culture in an airline industry could be that toxic. And i realized later that it was not my path in life, instead i was accepted as management trainee in an oil company, then have a change to travel around the world as passenger in business class for more than 20 years now. So yeah, i learned not to be discouraged, there are other pathways that suit us better.

The purpose was you remembered for life the lessons learnt on your that second flight. That's why you can still tell your story today. It toughened you up for your future challenges in life. It shouldn't be classified as a dark episode. Personally, I have had a worse experience working as an intern in the construction industry full of rough and tough men. I faced Gordan Ramseys everywhere and everyday. I saw past 'bullying' for the invaluable trade lessons learnt from those experienced and hardworking men.

I came across your video today and I have to say well said. I was an ex crew member as well from that same particular airline. I’m usually very vocal I would say and I if I do see some form of bullying I would usually help my fss out no matter what the rank. But what I’ll never forget was, a flight where I was dead tired and I had to arrange the carts in the galley, and a senior crew member saw me all tired and said this exact words. ‘ my name, do you regret not studying hard enough’ at that moment I was like what… and I was so pissed. I’m not gonna reveal my education qualifications here but when I went back to the other galley the other stewardesses saw that anger in my face , and asked what happened and felt disgusted. Well jokes on him, I’m a pilot today. 👍🏼

a fellow cabin crew here! i just got back from my leaves and finished operating my flight to FRA. thru out the time operating i wasn't in my 100% to socialize. what matters to me is i did my job and no complaints from my guest. felt lonely when i reached the hotel. the crew member didn't asked me to go out with them as well despite them asking others in front of me. i am not offended cause i wasn't interacting much with the rest. for me, this flight i just want to get everything over with. i just feel indifferent at everything honestly. with my life in totality. flying has suck the light out of me and i am just unbothered with what's going on around me. i don't have the energy to even make new friends anymore bcs it's exhausting after a long-hour of attending to people. and its sad because you need a social life outside of work so that you're life is not just work. but its also hard because flying really does take a toll on your body so trying to even do smth outside of work really does takes effort. so glad i bumped into your video. thanks for sharing this, felt less lonelier now :") now i am just trying my best to focus on smashing my personal goals so i can quickly leave this job for good.

Omgggg!This is so true...I have watched so many videos on why people left their job as a flight attendant...but nobody has ever talked about these reasons...I can feel you,all the things which you mentioned are the ones why I left.
These were the things which used to be in my mind all the time while I was working as a FA and I used to think that what am I even doing here why I am taking all this,but you can't do anything until you reach that level of seniority,and this is so true that you do become submissive when you are starting your career and for some people it takes time to come out of that.

I work in the airline industry. In my previous job, I was managing the airline call center in SG, and wow, we hire really good-looking call consultants. The supervisor said, "yeah, most of them were ex-cabin crew." What I realised most of cabin crew couldn't find a proper job after decided to come on the ground, and some had to settle for call center.

It’s not just SIA, my brother works as an engineer for SIA Engineering, they have the same toxic culture, when he first started, he got bullied by his seniors. Good thing he pushed through and has been with them for over 8 years.

When I was in my cabin crew training my communication instructor would tell us to prepare three briefings per day and then give viva the next day which was very difficult for some of us. Since I was not well and couldn’t study the briefings because of being sick and my batchmates and I had to shift to our own flats/paying guest houses the next day due to which I had to pack and even give my viva the next day and hence I couldn’t perform well due to which my instructor shamed me for my age and insulted me before everyone in my batch that there are others who are doing it and I’m not doing it. She said I was giving excuses but I never gave excuses for not studying it was something genuine which was so terrifying. This instructor was very inhuman because she wanted us to smile throughout the viva whereas there are some who are so sweet and patient. Also, the training is very intense they don’t care about your health. They just want more and more employees so that they can exploit them.
I was definitely like you when I was new. I had my senior cabin crew with whom I used to fly a lot. She had some issues with me but never said what! So during my flight she used to scold me or try to take me down each time she could, during our briefing I was the center of her briefing where she used to ask all the questions to me. I cried 2 times because of her during my flights. Being new i never understood what was happening to me. At the end I told her she can talk with me if she has any problems. I shared this experience with my pilot friend and he told me what to do next it this shit happens again.
In the end i changed my roster, because we have a fixed roster and just went to her opposite ones.
Now I'm a cabin supervisor and whenever I hear such stories similar to my own experience without hesitation I tell them what to do and that it they need me I will go with them to the office. I try to keep a very friendly environment during my flights and respect the newest cabin crew members.
It is not easy when you become a cabin crew and meeting such horrible people makes us feel just way worse.
I hope one day all this to be gone for good and just enjoy our flights because in aviation unfortunately meeting people most of the time is, temporary meeting. ❤️
I'm a train attendant in the USA aboard long haul passenger trains. All of your points I have personally been subjected to. The bullying, gaslighting, gossip, physically & emotionally demanding work load! Another dark reality I will chime in is the absolutely un supportive management/supervisors. We are just a number to the company. Virtually zero appreciation & recognition for what we do.

The people that oversee and supervise even the senior cabin crew need to address the issue of bullying and emphasize that seniority does NOT give anyone a free pass to bully or reprimand a junior cabin crew, and discipline should be rendered to those senior cabin crew who engage in such unprofessional behavior rather than just ignored that behavior. It is the airline's responsibility to make sure ALL cabin crew (even the juniors) be made to feel comfortable while working. It might even reduce some of the turnover.

True, sadly in our current world, people in senior management only care about lining their own pockets more rather than sharing more of the profits with their employees on the ground. When profits are low, staff are cut off or bonuses removed, but when profits skyrocket, management pockets more shares and bonuses.
Depends on the airline. Singapore Airlines crew make US$3000 on average and they get about US$20K bonus every year.
I remember being shocked by the way a Singapore Airlines stewardess spoke to me. She was serving coffee and I tried twice to take the cup off the tray she was holding, not realising that she had to give the cup to me. She snapped at me and kept moving the tray away. I get it, she was trying to minimise the risk of me being burned by hot coffee, but her manner wasn't good at all. Out of all the stewardesses in the economy cabin that flight, she was the least smiley. She didn't seem happy to be there. I don't know if she was in training, but she changed my opinion of Singapore Girls.

Ironically the things you said you were encouraged to do in your MBA class at the exact things you are meant to do as part of good CRM. Witness the number of fatal accidents that occurred when a junior member knew something was not right but failed to speak up because of the culture of “whatever the senior person says goes”. From a human factors standpoint that is extremely dangerous.
I’d say “what the senior says goes” would be applicable to the daily non-life threatening situations. when it comes to potentially fatal accidents, that's a different story. goal would always be to help address the situation. sadly most of the time, if the issue doesn't impact others, the injured crew members themselves choose to keep quiet cuz they don’t want to be grounded and take a pay cut.
overall, agreed with you that everyone needs to feel safe to speak up regardless of how big or small the situation is. thanks for watching!
If you just worked less than a month and your boss or colleague already complain you are slow then I think that’s bullying already and you should really consider quitting the job already before it get worst . I mean if you are new and it’s normal that you will be slower .
I grew up in Malaysia flying MH and SQ as a passenger. I work for a US airline and in my 24th year. Everything you touched is present in all airlines. Yes, I was bullied as a Chinese speaker on my first China flight. The senior galley in business class complained about me being "slow" with the service and the purser just told me to eat my meal and just go on break. She didn't stand up for me. I went in the bathroom and splashed some water on my face and continued. It's shameful that bullying is tolerated and the union does nothing.

Diversity is not only within each country. The environment in the airline could resulted from this as well. During the time I was couched and prepared to become flight attendant in academy, I have been told that "there have been 2 main mindset that set a standard of flight attendant between Asian culture and Arabian culture. Those working in Asian environment are to be submissive and convey great sense of hospitality regardless of any situation. However, when it comes to Arabian culture, you are the one who decide and command and find whatever it best suit for each situation. This is quite contrast and I am certain that the situation you have been through has its own purpose for your own achievement. No one can be like you. ❤❤

Asides from getting bullied, sabotage, blamed, I have gotten fat shame many times. Yes my body is more muscular and doesn’t fit the Asian beauty standards perfectly, and whatever they said to me and to others does not really bother me. However I think it’s pretty toxic as it happens to many others as well. The most toxic is that whenever us crew fly with a nice (normal) crew we felt very very appreciative as we know it does not happens often. Shouldn’t it be the other way around 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I always dream to become a cabin crew, and currently i am working as a Customer Service Representative for 4 years and still counting in Airlines. When i was junior 20 years old, I remember i was crying because i failed about 2 times for XX Product Knowledge. My senior keep bulying me like I need to be fast, I need to remember this & that, write that, been asked and get scold when I cannot answer the question. Now I finally became a senior, and I dont do that to people because I knew how hard it is to be felt when I was young in Airline Industry. Im not saying im strict, but I teach people well those who really show effort to learn. Reading your journey as Ex- Cabin crew, sometimes this might be the answer why God still not give me my dream job. But anyway, I believe, everyone have different journey, different characters, and lets however be nice to people around. Thanks, I give you like for the video.

As a one of ex middle east major airline crew. I totally agree about your opinion. As I heard SQ has strict seniority that most of asia airlines have. My previous airline has black lists for those crew that bully many junior crew. Actually, they think thay are empowered when they become supervisor. My previous airline also has reporting system which has been misusing and crew can report each other. But there are still some nice supervisors exist.
From my perspective, airlines which has high reputation has more pressures to maintain the high rank about the service and quality. My ex airline ceo always wants to get best airline award but SQ always took it as I heard.

@febbylyan I don't regret my time but I would not have made it my career long term... eventhough when I left 2 years was considered senior and my team flights were great but there was the standby call ups where creepy stewards and pilots were just a nightmare... maybe I am old school so I did not like these things but all in all, it was good for a while
Actually bullying and gossiping is in every workplace, but then i dont understand why people normalise it, aside from that if you work in a foreign country, there is discrimination, but then you still keep going even its hard.
Bullying happens in most service industry, especially in Hospitality industries such as Hotels, Restaurants and also, airlines! Terrible things! Karma is watching!

I don't know about point one. It sounds more like impatience than bullying. If she kept picking / referring to your mistakes, using hurtful words / actions etc every time she saw you, then that is bullying.
I remember when I was in Pri 2, the teacher asked me to fold some papers because I was in the front row and close to her. My family hardly use English (this was back in the 70s). It was always Hokkien so I had not the slightest idea what the heck was "fold the papers". I sat there dumb and didn't move. Seeing that I didn't do anything, the teacher yelled impatiently. "Fold! Fold! Like this! You understand or not? Simple thing like folding." She then pushed the papers to my desk mate and told her to do it.
No prizes for guessing how I felt then. I didn't cry though.
I don't think you get to decide what bullying means for someone though 😬😬 getting berated by a senior just because you handed them a drink from your hands instead of offering the whole tray kind of sounds like needless picking to me.. which is bullying 🤷♀️
Gossip is quite understandable. Especially when you get passengers who beat off over you, rumours of the cute stewardesses giving a teenager a handjob and her phone number, even rumours of a smuggling operation by crew. It’s no different than in any industry.

I remember my cousin shared with me how the trainer was being racism against her - colour shaming. She almost gave up!
Personally I observed that Workplace Bullying seemed to be the Norm in Singapore’s work environments. Not just in the Airlines.
Doesn’t help that the Unions there are basically for window dressings or simply just another COVERT HR department representing the companies’ interests instead.
Alot of toxic work environment over there with no authentic protection for employees.

One thing I noticed during my cabin crew interview in Mumbai Indian that was HR team was good no doubt but they were very particular and only chose the girls who were skinny mind you they were okay to select girls who were low on bmi was they were skinny but still didn’t select girls who looked medium size or little chubby even though they were extremely healthy and were under bmi requirements. So yaa with my own first hand experience i can singapore airlines is one the airline promoting extreme beauty standards.

Emirates does the same thing you never fly with the same crew I think it probably has a lot to do with avoiding labor unions, or any talk of organization.

Asian passengers rate the flight attendant job similar to waiter / waiteress & does not visualize the pressures on the job to take care of the passengers . I being a frequent flier can immediately figure out a new & an experinecd flight attendant by the intial responses.

i work at the airport with cabin crews and the seniors especially the malaysian cabin crew seniors always have an attitude, even with me she was so rude. at my workplace they are known for always being rude. at the end of the at any and every workplace seniors will always have a higher hiearchy

No. Singapore Airlines puts layover crew in major hotels in Manhattan.
I was expecting something specific to the Flight Attendant job itself, but most of the points you mentioned (with the exception of the physical demands) are generic things that people would encounter at just about any workplace. And given that the things you mentioned are very human-centric.. it'll be unique to each individual's experiences.. when you title it as "the DARK side of being a flight attendant" it's misleading, like you're speaking on behalf of the entire airline industry. It would be better if you titled it something along the lines of your own experiences as a flight attendant 🤔
and the work as cabin crew will never get as many praises, appreciation or as good enough. This constant nagging puts us and forces our mind to work in the cabin galley as basic rank flight attendants until we retire just so as to be appreciated . As a former flight attendant with Lufthansa German Airlines I am a little shocked how deeply Asian mentality impacts the way of how to interact with each other.
I was a senior myself for many decades, but our company's culture was entirely different. We always appreciated the fresh input juniors can provide, new ideas of the juniors combined with the senior's experience, that is Lufthansa's cabin crew policy. And we all had to work 'according to the book', seniors and juniors alike.
Another example: if I was granted a trip to Singapore (many flight hours, popular destination, longer rest time after returning home) I requested for January, and if I requested the same trip again next month, but a junior did not get that trip in January, the junior would be next in February.
And btw.: the uniforms are all the same, except for the pursers, they have more stripes on the sleeves of their uniform.
After 33 years of working as a flight attendant with Lufthansa, now I am enjoying my retirement and look back to all the pros and cons, not entirely without sentimentality 🙂😢

I'm so sorry that you had to exp the bullying & foolishness - you seem like a nice young woman. I was an FA for 12 yrs with a major (U.S.) carrier, and I witnessed alot of crap! So after 12 yrs, I resigned and went back to school and got my Masters in healthcare - nest decision ever. Although I loved (and still do) Aviation, I do NOT miss the ignorance, scheduling, the $$ or lack of, and the competitiveness - smh. I'd take an "irate" pax anyday, than work with some of my crew mates.. Not everyone was awful - I've met very nice /cool folks, and I've seen alot of cool places! It was a wonderful experience, but I wouldn't do it again!! and I would recommend every young woman or man, to just do your research , and don't just want the job because of the "glamour". I am glad you found this useful! I think for this one it all depends on the individual and how they honour their own commitment. I've heard (and seen) both good and bad things. I personally was already in a relationship before I started flying. now, a couple years after I quit, we are still together :)
Depends on where you're based, and if your bf is commited to you. He willl meet people who will flirt with him and give him offers. Its very easy...

Disgusting. SIA tolerates bullying. This is really bad Karma and sounds like toxic culture. Having said that, a smart organisation will see your value in good HR management. The point I am making here is even big organisations like SIA failed to realise that HR managers should be sensitive and alert to these issues and make corrections before it becomes toxic.
unfortunately, I feel like some of these cultures have already been ingrained for decades so they are normalized. I am hopeful that with more and more of the younger generation who is typically more outspoken joining the workforce, things would somehow improve for the better eventually
Do they provide accommodation and cab during duty?
SIA will never give a accomodation to their cabin crew unlike the middle eastern five star airlines, SIA do not care about their employees. You will see when you travel with SQ, when you look at the cabin crew, you will see stress and unhappiness on their faces in spite of smiling at you, totally different that the vibes you got from Emirates, Qatar and Etihad cabin crew. SIA cabin crew wear the fake smile. Based on my experiences.
Whatever you mentioned in this video is the consequences of your job & the cliche things that happen in all workplace. The difference is, that other 'workplace' doesn't pay them to have high salary & allow them to experience luxurious lifestyle in multiple countries. Flight attendant nowadays complain about their job consequences which they should have considered before applying for it. No surprise & no sympathy 😒👎

I am not sure what the culture is like in Japanese airlines but I’ve heard similar stories from people working for other huge Asian airlines, so I am guessing the cultures might be similar
Id have fought the bully right on. Right then and there. Id make a commotion to let the bully know I will not be bullied/ take it lying down. There are right and not right ways to be an example / to mentor your fellow coworkers. You handed her the drink from the standpoint of one coworker to another. If she wanted to be a client then be a client and stop pretending to be a flight attendant. Id have raised hell to the point of that plane requiring to land somewhere as emergency landing. Id have made headlines as IDGAF. I do not give a f*ck. Come mess with me and find out. I work at SFO airport and I was bullied by the Security / TSA agent and I argued with the guy in front of all to see. He tried that again another time and I got him reprimanded.
Although it’s somewhat true, just a reminder that point ① zapping doesn’t only happen in SIA. In real world, any industry, any country, when we’re still new, it’s pretty common. I DON’T condone bullying, it’s just that sometimes we “live in a lala land” thinking that everybody is supposed to be nice to us. Any job, there will be good days & bad days. Just enjoy the ride & stay positive. Speaking as ex SIA crew here :)
I get what you mean and I am with you conceptually. that said, before I joined the airline and after I left, I personally have never experienced point 1 to the same extent like I did when I was flying. I think it also has something to do with both the industry & company cultures which dictates what is normalized/acceptable. anyways, hope you are enjoying your time on ground after leaving the airline :)

I know many F/A that love their job. One man meat is another man’s poison. I do agree that somehow we do get home sick. I have notice that cabin crew eating their meals standing in the gallery. Then again whatever happened in Rome stays in Rome. From the passengers point of view we do understand your predicament. I always thanks the crew for the excellent service they provide. Maybe it’s not a job to your liking but there are others that adores the freedom and the lifestyle. The rewards are plenty as a package including high bonus. Think about all the money you have made to be able to study and the exposure to be independent. I wish you well in the cooperate world. Equally stressful and if not more demanding.

I think because of the work environment, having flings and affairs become easier than in other industries so these do exist, but at the end of the day, it's a personal choice and there are definitely many folks who honour their relationships and do not play the game
