- Barry Gray's theme from UFO, arranged for big band from the original manuscript by Alfie Pugh.
Thank you for all the attention this video has received, and the many kind comments regarding the band and this arrangement.
Please note this is footage from a rehearsal, not a performance. The band were sight reading this, and not everyone in the room was involved in playing this number.
Unfortunately, although I have received many requests for it, I am legally unable to offer this arrangement for sale.
Played by members of the Century 21 Concert Band, conducted by Alfie Pugh, at their first meeting in June 2015, Exeter UK. - Видеоклипы
Barry Gray was a musical genius, bridging the gaps between classical music, jazz and the newely introduced synthesizers of the 1960's
I love Barry Grays original 1970 version. I have to say this band took this classic theme song to another level. Even though its a rehearsal they just nailed it. This is a performance that Mr Gray would definitely be proud of.
Holy cow! RUclips’s algorithms just threw this at me. One of the BEST TV Show themes ever , like I’ve NEVER heard it before. AMAZING. 👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
As a sax player, I loved the sax solo in this - sheer genius. My friends' Dad, John Taylor, worked on the early Gerry Anderson productions and I still love them!
I was 10 when UFO first started and it absolutely terrified me .It didn't help that it was set in 1980 only ten years in the future .They don't write theme tunes like that anymore. Excellent!
Lol, I was about the same age when I first so it. This theme always stuck in my head.
That, and the sound of the UFOs in flight.
I was 8 and I knew I would be fighting UFOs by the year 2000 when I'd be a late 30s astronaut/fighter pilot.
@@blakemore99 All shows and movies like this should be sued for false advertising! 😄
I kinda wished I was alive already when ufo was shown on tv. A book of a friend got me interested in the series and I luckily found a complete dvd box
I really liked watching this series when it started . Also my Roku TV on live TV channel 760 does show UFO along with other SCI-FI series.
What a classic theme. I loved the show as a kid. They don't make shows or themes like this anymore.
Where's the Organist, and why can we only see half the Band!!!
How the hell do even begin to arrange something like this...... awesome guys..... just awesome 👍
Wow fantastic, don't lose bands like this.
Who knew the future would sound so much like jazzy 60s exotica? Wonderful performances, especially the rhythm section.
The future will be powered by bossa!
out of all of Gerry Anderson films I think that this is one of his best intro pieces by Barry,
why limit it to Gerry Anderson?
This is one of the best TV theme tunes by any composer in any series in any genre
@@5ynthesizerpatel Go on!!!
This and Thunderbirds intro. Thunderbirds gives me goosebumps.
@Me Too Yeah, I’d rate the space 1999 intro, too - it’s both grander and a whole lot stranger. As good as UFO and Joe 90 themes are (and Stingray and Thunderbirds) they always sound dated but Space 1999 still sounds sort of modern, because it’s composition is so totally unusual.
Barry Gray was a genius - all the Gerry Anderson stuff he did is catchy, clever and often spooky. If you can find out, look for “Stand By For Adverts”, a collection of Mr Gray’s non-Anderson music. This collection really shows off his workmanship, depth of musical knowledge and is full of his charming directions to the players or the control room - he just comes across as a really gentle soul, despite the bombast in much of his music.
The "extensions" are three short, improvised solos on jazz organ/keyboard, alto sax, and trumpet respectively.....but yes, this is terrific!
I posted this to the U.F.O. fan page I'm on and they loved it.. Deservedly so.
Just exceptional! They certainly don't compose music like this any more!
But they do occasionally reuse it.

That is bloody good. I really enjoyed it.
Still one of the coolest videos on RUclips….
I remember when I wrote to Barry Gray when I was just nine years old about how he came about this intro. All he said was, is that one moment he wanted an intro to sound futuristic but every time he had it played back it sounded too sterile and too clean. Almost too machine like or synthocratic. It was then he decided to use a symphony orchestra to achieve his desired result and it worked so well, that when audiences heard it for the first time, the feedback he got was overwhelming. I loved this cover of UFO'S intro from this band. I never thought it could be done again until I heard this rendition. A wonderful and timeless piece for the sixties. But Barry did it again when he gave us the intro for Space 1999 propelling the home audience further into the universe.
Excellent job! I still wonder why the current free T.V. stations (e.g. MeTV, Antenna TV) don't show reruns of UFO. :-(
A magnificent rendition, and I like the part in the middle where it transitions back into the main part of the UFO theme. Very well done to all involved.
Fifty four years ago and still COOL !
Absolutely SUPERB, favorite TV program from my misspent youth
Wow!!! Just.......WOW!!!!!
Top marks people- this takes me back to my wonderful Gerry Anderson filled childhood 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Wow, wow and WOW! This is fantastic! Thank you for bringing back to life this wonderful music from Barry Gray. I never thought i would hear it "live" this way, it's just fantastic! Thank you for sharing it.
Brilliant! The best of all the Gerry Anderson themes. Loved UFO when I was a kid.
I can't stop replaying this!!
Too many tv shows think that the opening theme music needs "refreshing" in subsequent seasons/series and the results are more miss than hit. Yet this rendering of an iconic tv series opening could have graced potential seasons/series of UFO quite easily. BTW, it would work just as well for a re-boot.
This theme tune still gives me goose bumps
Barry Gray would have been proud. Awesome job guys. Love it!!
happy days
Great to see (and hear) this!
Wonderful. I was about 10 years old and my mom was young. God knows how much I miss her.
I expected to see Ed Straker walking through :D ...dear gods the hairs on the back of my neck stood up listening to that. Amazing! (UFO theme is my smartphone ringtone :))
How do I go about getting that ringtone? Am having a hard time.

OUTSTANDING and a great show..UFO
LOVE THIS VERSION! What an incredible band--and just a practice???!!!❤❤❤ Remember watching the show in 70s, love watching it in 2024. 😊
10/10 for the orchestra, 6/10 for the camera op.
Awesome rendition of the theme.
Carl B agreed!
My favourite TV film ever seen. opened my mind and fall in love with the starry sky. Love Barry Theme
Just fantastic.. .This is from my Fav program ever...
Looks like so much fun! I bet it would be the happiest time if I could play along too.
This is bloody marvelous :)
Indeed...
As a drummer and Anderson fan, I can say with a little authority the original drum parts of most Gerry Anderson's/Barry Gray themes were controlled; tight snappy hi-hat, tight slightly wooden sounding snare, precise and minimal. This drummer nailed it. The whole band did. Well recorded too!!! Cheers from sunny Australia
I can't remember the theme to Space 1999 but I will never forget the theme to UFO.That a great show to grow up with.
What a tension builder - brilliant
What a superb theme, and a brilliant arrangement,Big Band and a nice bluesy feel, brilliant composer was Barry Gray!
Fantastic! UFO is still my #1 fave TV programme of all time and I watch 3-4 episodes a week, love it so much and Barry Gray was a genius!
Perfect tempo and brilliantly played by all!
Extraordinario. Fantástico . Sublime. Grandilocuente .
Gracias por rememorar esa serie de tv tan fabulosa.
Gracias a la orquesta , a todos los músicos , a los realizadores, y gracias , también , por subir el video.
Saludos desde Chile.
Best theme ever well played
That was brilliant. just like i remember.
How can you possibly give this a thumbs down?!? It's a great tune and the musicians play it marvelously well. Some people, sheesh...
Ufff !!! I go back to my adolescence .... I did not miss a single episode ... excellent original interpretation. Thank you so much for sharing it
Aged 14yrs, My drum teacher told me to play learn and play along to this theme", we were both "Rock drummers!, such a great piece of music" the end theme! is so"Spooky"
The amazing thing is how different all Barry Gray's themes were, but not a duff one among them. But the Thunderbirds March is his masterpiece.
Can't stop returning here!
They certainly don't compose music like this anymore! Simply fantastic!
LA Mia infanzia, quanto mi piaceva questo telefilm. Bei tempi 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Ausgezeichnet - So ein Zusammenspiel, Ihr seid zusammen richtig SPITZE!!!
Wow, simply fantastic thanks 😎
I wish that you had the whole piece from the start this is a wonderful performance.
That was brilliant: the band really nailed it!
Brilliant. Loved the series and have the box set
Now, that is good. One of my favourite tv series.
This is awesome. To see how it comes together is just outstanding.
Wow. As a young boy i was awe struck by the show, thanks for the memories.
Wow. Great job. Loved seeing a band play the theme extended with solos.
Fantastic thanks for the upload. ❤️🎵🎶🎉
I can see in my mind when this band plays the last few notes, bop-bop-bop-bop, the missiles firing from the interceptors (that extreme close-up) and the UFO exploding in that last BOP! Nothing like a live band.
This is the best rendition I've ever heard. Made my day!
Excelente serie!! No me la perdía de joven... Pero el tema es una belleza!?
Could you put this together again and record it beginning to end? This was awesome!
This is so good in the original era style too. :-)
Belter! Absolutely brilliant arrangement!
Wow, takes me back to my childhood! I thought that show was so fascinating. Even if I don't remember all the episodes, that theme song has always stuck in my head after all these years.
This is a great rendition!
Brilliantly done, took me way back..
love this..really bloody great
Taking a great theme and elevating it to concert level! Many thanks!
Awesome, I love the UFO theme tune and what a great arrangement too. Bravo.
Nice extention to the original! I'm sure Barry would be proud.
So much energy in that performance! I've heard quite a few weak renditions of this theme but this is stunning!
i remember watching that show on TV when I was young.
The funny thing is most of the band wasn’t even born when the show came out but I love it
You mean like Mozart, Brahms, Gershwin, Gibb?
It's even money whether the PARENTS of the members of this band were alive yet themselves when this show first aired!

Brilliant. Great salute to an amazing show that was years ahead of its time.
One of the grooviest musical pieces from that era. They don’t make theme songs like this anymore.
An absolutely smashing rendition of one of my all-time-favorite TV themes. I love how your drummer cracks a broad grin at 2:06 as the band starts bringing it home. I'd gladly pay for a good-quality recording of the entire piece if you ever decide to publish it, Alfie. My highest compliments to you and the Century 21 Concert Band!
Incredible arrangement! This was my favorite show as a kid and I loved the theme, but I think this version is even better! The drums in particular are awesome!!
R u lo call?
Thanks for keeping the music alive !!!
I′ve been longing for meet this theme again , Wow
Beautiful job - takes me back to the excitement of waiting for a new episode and the prospect of seeing a UFO again (which always thrilled me as a teenager) 👍
Wow! Love this, fantastic version of my favourite theme from my favourite show!
Ohhhhh they killed it... DAMN GOOD JAM SESSION!!! (But why are the musicians just sitting there???🤷🏾♂️ Mannnnn... if my high school or college band had performed that, we woulda’ been rockin’ and reelin’ all over the place🤣🤣🤦🏾♂️!!)
Have you listened to their stingray rendition? Its Amazing , and yes I thought the same, sat there like wooden dolls.lol..but they are fantastic.
They're British.
Most of them are old farts like me lol, it’s the case with most every jazz band - but who cares? Man, can they knock those tunes out!!
They killed it! I thought I was about to watch an episode of UFO!
Awesome....takes me back to my childhood....
More lively than some of the musical groups I've heard play the UFO theme on RUclips. Well done.
The algorithm must’ve done a mind-meld with me!
Awesome rendition of this theme. I have the series on DVD and may have to break it out this weekend.
lol, wow -it's rare for later versions to sound as good as the original -absolutely awesome
Loved it! It's my ring tune as it reminds me of Saturday mornings in the 60's
Damn, that was good!!!!!!
Knocked it out of the park! WOW!!
