After the show I was still weak and I think they helped me carry the heavy stuff to my car and we had to drive back home which was one of the scariest things because I was falling asleep. The work of a musician when young and a professional one of the hardest jobs out there in my opinion.

    2:13 Guitar players take note. In a few seconds you're going to hear a wailing note but the guitar player is chunking chords around the nut. The next shot shows the bass and guitar player---who transitions up the neck to mime the solo, and as he steps out of the shot, discontinues playing although the notes are still audible. The vocals on this track are live and are amazing!!

    • @cdkilo77
      @cdkilo77 2 года назад +4

      I was sitting here watching this and began to realize it was mostly mimed. Not just the guitars but the vocals too. Ian was definitely live but he was only singing the in-between parts of the chorus. Also, there were backing vocals but no mics. They basically used the album version and I wouldn't be surprised if the drums weren't miked or were turned down.

      100%! I first saw them in a New Orleans club with GnR opening, right before Guns blew up. I think GnR really set the bar & pushed them to be better that night because The Cult put on an AMAZING show that I'll never forget! They were outstanding.
      Fast forward just a few short years later & The Cult came to town opening for Metallica in Biloxi, MS and The Cult were absolutely HORRIBLE. I mean, like maybe one of the worst concert performances I'd ever seen - no exaggeration. Everyone was stoked because word had gotten out that guitarist Steve Jones of Sex Pistols fame was set to join The Cult on stage at some point. The 15,000 seat arena was wall-to-wall packed with absolute rabid Metallica fans, and what we witnessed during that opening set was bad to the point of comical. Ian Asbury was so drunk that he was slurring, falling down, forgetting the words to his own songs, etc. At one point I remember him drunkinly mouthing off to the crowd because kids were booing them hard, and then immediately tripping and falling on his ass. What a complete 180 from the first time I saw them! I had been telling everyone for days how amazing The Cult were gonna be, and this was a complete train wreck. By the time a just-as-drunk Steve Jones joined them onstage for "Fire Woman" Ian wasn't even bothering to try and sing at that point. He just stumbled around the stage slurring & yelling shit into the microphone during the verses and screaming the chorus completely off-key, like a drunk dude at the end of the bar yelling the words over a jukebox FIIIIYAAAAAH-UHHHH-UHHHUHHHUHH! 🤣
      All I can say is THANK GAWD for Metallica!! They proceeded to come out and melt our young faces off for two hours, & The Cult became the butt of everyone's jokes afterwards. We went from watching one of the worst performances imaginable & feeling totally ripped off, to witnessing one of the very best concerts I've ever seen in my life - before or since. If you've ever seen Metallica's infamous Seattle show from "Binge & Purge" it was the same show, only Metallica played a few extra covers that night during the encore. I saw that tour on a few different stops with different bands opening the show (Queensryche; Suicidal Tendencies), and every show was damn near flawless. Metallica were just clicking on another level back then. But that night in Biloxi was truly special... despite The Cult's attempt to ruin it.

    Ian is an amazing performer. Always ost in the moment but totally in control at the same time you can see he was influenced by the great Jim Morrison.

    • @judetheneilyounggirl2358
      @judetheneilyounggirl2358 9 месяцев назад

      Oh,yeah, BIG TIME Morrison influences! The first time I saw him in the Fire Woman video, I couldn't help but notice how much he emulated Morrison. He channels Jim like no one else I've ever seen. Then I found out that he had been Oliver Stone's first choice to portray Jim in the Door's movie, but he had not taken the role. It's so obvious why Stone wanted him. He really, naturally, looks like Jim, not to mention his performing style. And then, there's that gorgeous HAIR! OMG! Ian is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and amazingly talented! What a voice! I agree with the person who said they liked his voice even more with it being all raspy and horse. AMEN to that! He is just the perfect Rock God and I LOVE HIM!!!

      True, but to be fair, the VMAs believe it or not, used to be pretty decent. I’d hate to see the “ceremony” now. All those shitty top 40 tracks all have the same canned trap beats. Yawnworthy.

    For everyone asking about them playing to a track, yes they are... this was the VMA's in 1989. They did this to most bands for reliability and quality control since it's broadcasted to millions and millions of people. Can't afford to have any technical issues or band screw ups on this prestigious of a program people 😉
