Lyrics:
I've watched your face for a long time
It's always the same
I've studied the cracks and the wrinkles
You were always so vain
Well, now you live your life like a shadow
In the pouring rain
Oh, it's called love
Yes, it's called love
Oh, it's called love
And it belongs to us
Oh, it dies so quickly
It grows so slowly
But when it dies, it dies for good
It's called love
And it belongs to everyone but us
I've lived my life in the valleys
I've lived my life on the hills
I've lived my life on alcohol
I've lived my life on pills
But it's called love
And it belongs to us
It's called love
And it's the only thing that's worth living for
It's called love
And it belongs to us
It's called love
Yes it's called love
Oh, love is found in the east and west
But when love is at home, it's the best
Love is the cure for every evil
Love is the air that supports the eagle
It's called love
And it's so un-cool
It's called love
And somehow it's become unmentionable
It's called love
And it belongs to every one of us
It's called love
And it cuts your life like a broken knife

Here in Brazil, in the 1980s, New Order was one of the most successful international bands, practically, all the teenagers of this generation loved it and had at least one New Order album, especially the incredible album Substânce 1987. And today with 47 years old, I still enjoy listening to the beautiful. electronic music of New Order, my favorite band
Absolut true!
real!
Sou brasileiro e tenho 22 anos, nascido em 98, sou super fã de New Order... queria que todos da minha geração tbm gostassem...
Same here in the Philippines, I was 19 when my Mom took me to the US for summer vacation. I picked up the Substance album in a record store in Hollywood Blvd. back in April 1987. I’m now 56 and I still love this music, one of my fave New Order songs.
@@theggirl93 It's nice to live in the Philippines, it's an archipelago of islands, very beautiful islands, which island do you live on???
They had more guts to play live on TOTP than any other bands
Top of the pops wouldn’t let groups play live, new order refused to go on unless they let them play live, other groups were just excited to get the publicity
Yea wasnt it mostly lip syncing with the album. With other groups i mean
In later years, they had to concede. But yeah, for the longest time they refused to do it.
New Order Lip synced once on German TV, they were really pissed off or embarrassed. They said they would never do it again.
yes but i think it sounds better when not live ..i heard the pet shops saying once that they hated doing live songs because they couldnt get sound the same from a lay down track
Hooky's bass in here👌👌
Heroic, as usual.
Great on the record but it sounds bloody awful on this.
Great - just a wee bit high in the mix.
@@lydianor Yes it is, but is their a cooler bass player anywhere?
he plays it like a guitar . Likes to stay in the high note ranges but I like it.
40 years ago this week. Amazing still!
No way! That's bananas, I am 40 on the 3 weeks time x
THIS is rhe reason i fucking love this band. The (un)perfect And angst Bernard vocals, his style that gives a shitty for audience cos he's singing for HIMself with closed eyes mustering the focus on singing, Hookie, in opposite show all his skills wirh zero shy, Gillian (My silent Godess, how i love her) doing his job on keyboards and the human durmam Machine, the most cool couple of rock. How we are fortunate for ali the masterpieces this mancunians had bring for us. Cheers for them!
Well said!
Gillian is the unsung hero.
Bernard Sumner was so beautiful ❤️
You’ve got to love the sheer bloody mindedness of playing live on TOTP, how do we get a 6 minute song down to 2 minutes without sounding like idiots.
You play the edited 7” promo version.
3 and a half minutes actually no need to exaggerate it mate.
Bernie-The best lead singer who by the way can't sing. But he's great.
That's what I always say, but it works 😂
Haha. I think hes got a very sexy voice.
He can sing but they never wrote in his key, so he was always struggling to make the notes until later years when they did write for his key.
@@steveant That’s interesting. But Bernard had a big part in writing the music.
Hook wanted to keep the music more as Joy Division.
@@catherinebonanno6545 He does have a very sexy voice! I've been in love with his voice and Dave Gahan 's voice for as long as I can remember. I used to wonder why Bernie always has his eyes closed...lights hurt his eyes? Is he shy? Is he trying to be more seductive?
The intro is insane. The lyrics are intense. The bass line is awesome as usual. This is a great live version
My favorite New Order song for over 30 years. Just beautiful. Wish it was the long version, though.
I saw NO play this live a few months later at Sunderland. Was my favourite song of the night
Peter Hook has such a distinct sound it's amazing
so distinct, his bass sticks out but stays in the back all at once 🤌🏼
@@sebs6508 Or in simpler terms: Hookerrific, Hooktastic, Hooksational.
Aw, bless, Barney and Hooky wearing matching leather jackets. Then there's that soft melody with the bass tone like a lion's roar. Spectacular.
I love them so much.
Thanks for this. Magic!!!
I can't recall a video or photo where Peter Hook hasn't got a beard-i bet he had that rug since the age of 12 !!!✌✌✌
Literally the only photo I've ever seen of a clean shaven Hook is from when he was 10
Bom dia minha banda de rock preferida da minha época anos 80.
Bons tempos inesquecível.
The TV show Host said they were singing LIVE, though everything they're playing is LIVE.
New Order wouldn't stoop to miming.
They had a PUNK ethic, even if the music wasn't.
Though some people will challenge me on that, saying they played PUNK Electronic Dance music.
I've had the immense pleasure of seeing them LIVE twice.
I own the 12" vinyl of this song.
it has brought to a blubbering mess on quite a few occasions.
Amazing 😍❤
Dang, proof there are some real gems still out there that I hadn’t seen good copies of.
I had the 12" of this - back whenever.
Thank you New Order! Loved you then, STILL loving you today in 2024!
I miss those 80’s days so much.
what a great liveversion! And Bernard's voice is so good on this one!
Agreed, it might be their best Top Of The Pops Live performance (they had a few shambolic ones)... This is Great.
In the early 80s they already invented the 90s. The talent of these musicians is crazy.
LUV THIS SONG SO MUCH .....
Beautiful Song
brilliant - only seems like yesterday ...
Love that hollow sounding bass being played like a guitar.
One of the greatest tunes ever written.
I love this kinda music
Luvvvvvvvv yaaaaa! How I wished all my life I lived in England in the 80s just to go to every New Order gig
and the Smiths!!
New Order live on TOTP were awesome all performances. Hookys bass playing was awesome
Yes, they are the best 🚴🚴🚴🚴❣️
That was Thieves Like Us by New Order. Now here's Footloose by Kenny Loggins; that's called going from art to rubbish in two seconds.
AHHH MY FAV TRACK BY THEM....BY FAR....SO PRETTTTTY
Hooky being proper cool there. That bass sound 😂 brilliant
Awesome so good new order the best band ever !!!
'Thieves' was arguably one of the best - if not the best - track they ever did. Looking back at this performance 36 years on, there really was nothing else quite like them. Everybody had their place - and were certainly greater than the sums of parts - which is why things now aren't quite the same.
Barney seems to be enjoying himself and the mix on Hookys bass was OTT at the start, fine at the end.
i love how the most replayed parts of new order videos are hookys best bass parts
I love how Bernard and hooky are doing their twinzie thing with matching outfits 🥰
Oh how things have changed : (
Berns voice and Hookys bass was like peanut butter and jelly... a perfect duo
This song is one of my absolute favorites.
And NO did it LIVE!
Bernard Sumner - coolest rock star ever. Peter Hook - absolute legend, Gillian Gilbert - beautiful and Stephen Morris - gifted. The classic New Order line up playing live what more could you want?
Bernard is the most UNCOOL rock star ever, he was unique and special in the 80s but now he is an embarressment. Gillian is an enigma, it's hard to tell what she actually brought to NO but the results are on record, bit of a slam to call her just "beautiful" like she was just a visual element.
o__ooo__o iii She was the most capable of composition in the group. She was great making out a form and even had to teach Sumner how to tune up a guitar after he arrogantly said to her one time, “Don’t take too long to tune, alright?”
@@HaloAdmiral When she joined the band she could actually read music, So that helped.
Michael Wilson Yep! Plus you can really hear how she contributed to the music of you listen to Gillian and Stephen’s project, The Other Two. She’s a good vocalist!
@@HaloAdmiral I remember an interview with Gillian in which she said, in New Orders early days, she asked Hooky to play a certain note on his bass and he was clueless.
I always fancied the keyboard player !

Hi from Manchester 👌
Hi! I thought you were both dead!
@@MrJonno85 i live in Middleton, it's worse than being dead! ☺👍
Spent many hours in front of my mirror in my teen years singing this.
I love this song.
Banda e música maravilhosa demais.Lembrando muito minha juventude.
Love this. Please get the Crystal on Jools Holland version up. The best live version of any song that New Order done on TV. Hooky says its the greatest. I don't disagree.
It's already on here..!!

@@samisticlife Yes its brilliant. But the BBC must have the Master tapes with crystal clear sound.
just logged into to like this comment mate. 100% agree. I'm obsessed with that performance of Crystal and everytime the Beeb upload their HD archive material I pray for that one!
Hello Swain Lach my name is Charles in I think Berine could sing he just had his own way of doing it also he started a band after his best friend and lead singer Ian Curtis passed away I think that's truly brave to carry on .
Som antológico epco
Arthur Baker jamás volvió a producir una canción más bella que ésta. Besos, muchos besos desde Sevilla/Spain.
Gillian- the girl next door as rock star. I love her.
Notice how the host had to mention that thew were playing live and singing live, because so many acts on TOP lip-synched.
i love Bernie's pure energy here
This is probably a prime example of why Barney thought Hooky's bass was too high.. He'd have a point here, much as I love Hooky's bass, that's far too much..
It is high, but it works... However, if it is high all the time on every record, then its effect is lessened. Barney had a point, but only to a point.
@@djh29971 Just to be clear - I meant high in terms of volume, not tune.
It's NO YES!!!
Ladrões como nós👈bandidos falando de certos políticos
Thievis like us é top demais😍
To think, New Order have never just been 'pop'. To get live airplay of a tune like this on TOTP was pretty sweet.
Who else dare to play live on top of the pops back then ? 😄
Brilliant song from my favourite band of all times 👍🔥
Am i the only one who thinks Barney looks like a middle aged David Bowie on the thumbnail for this?
It is impossible to listen this NO hymn cut, butchered, just for TOTP. But it is a like, anyway, cause in the begging it writes New Order.
As músicas do New Order é um 🎁para os ouvidos mais seletivos.
😍
I love you!!! You're the OST of my life!!!
Hook's bass sounds like a fart
one of the greatest things in the history of all stuff - New Order deserved a bit more success and I can name many, many bands who deserved a bit less...
This shit's fantastic. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Oh! It's called love!! 💕
This is funny, were Bernard and Peter dressing as a kind of "new wave rockers" or what? in any case, great life performance
Brilliant! Nothing like Footloose following TLU.

This is 1 of my all time favourite songs......
Back in the day they were my favourite band and I must have watched this. Disappointed the BBC couldn't rise to the challenge. Performance 10/10 Mix 5/10.
BBC still abysmal even now...

New Order is the best, and so was Joy Division. If only Ian was still alive......
Real music 👍
Unique sound. Miss the 80s❤❤
The keyboards all covered in tape so you couldn't tell they were an Octave VPK-5 and an E-mu Systems Emulator.
One of my favorite New Order songs!
Was just thinking @ the morning sun, this popped up!! This is
Great. Ty.
Not me singing along with this lol xD Such a great song
I had the same hairstyle as Barney back then.
Love you, New Order!!!!
wait are bernand and peter in matchng outfits here
Fancy cutting off at Kenny Loggins. Pah!

Can we appreciate Hooky letting it rip at 2:25

Except for "Power, Corruption and Lies", "Technique", and "Low Life", they've been mostly a SINGLES type of band, just like Duran Duran, and other bass of their time.

My ears hurt ffs ☺
Hook likes his guitar at his ankles. Following New Order with Kenny Loggins Footloose. At the time, that might have been okay. Now, it appears like the worst decision. Lol ...Don't ever follow anything by New Order with anything from Kenny Loggins.
