They were picked on by the so called music critics for using the line ' used to be some shops' but what they were expressing is how simple life was and then the girls come in, quite hard I have to say " is where the snipers sometimes hide" that sends shivers, can you imagine living in that kind of fear. Phil had a friend in Lebanon who would send him art work and communicate to him of the atrocities and that's when he made this song

Haha me too! I remember queuing for a long time, then being inside for a long time. Them doing bits of playback and laughing when the music stopped as they were cut short in their performance, as were we with our 80s dance moves. My mate and I went because a friend begged us to go, yet she didn't turn up. Was fun though!

And there was a 'competition' to win Human League prizes, but it was obviously rigged, and was 'won' by the League super fan who wore Human League badges head to foot, and Human League scarves and so on. Which was fair enough. No one semed to mind.@@JimHanner

Yes,caught people by surprise all right. The only other Western pop song I'd heard (unless there are any that have slipped my mind) before then dealing with the subject was the one Mr Sarstedt did in summer 1978 called Beirut - Crumbling Stone By Stone. Bit of different vibe to this one!

Kelly14UK, I fully agree with you. This song is definitely one of the best songs ever just like so many of The Human League's other hit. After learning that this song reached #11 on the UK pop charts and #13 on the NZ pop charts, I felt the song should've peaked in the Top 10. Still, I've loved this song since I first heard it in 1984 and I always will.
