Everybody talked about how cheap and built for commercial success this song was. Never realized how funky and groovy, and thus awesome, this really was.
I think I realized it, when I I first heard this song on the radio, at least I thought the song was a lot cooler than many others at that time. The pop, "built for success" songs seemed to get more airplay, & are usually the most often heard on the "hits of the '80's flashbacks" on radio stations, & most visible on RUclips, but it wasn't those were my favorites, it was songs like this one that I remember, & thought were the best.

Have you heard 'I Know' by Philip Bailey? (1984). And 'Janet' by the Commodores (also 1984). Most passionate power ballad ever, IMO, 'Into The Night' by Benny Mardones (1980). Most beautiful chorus in a ballad -- 'Baby Come To Me' by P. Austin & J. Ingram (1982). The '80s had a few inimitable gems.

It unbelievable to conceive this classic is 40 years old!
Isn't that crazy, where does the time go?
Sounds brand New..... unrealistically amazing.

Great way of putting it!❤
39 years later and I have discovered the bassist, Nick Beggs. What a talent.
Same here, hes amazing. Currently listening to steve wilson band of which hes a part of, really good stuff.
one of the best pop bassists, second only to Mark King
PDBass, one of the best music channels on RUclips does a great breakdown of the bass on this.
He is a really nice person I see him every now and then in my local town Leighton buzzard and o always say hi and he waves and says hi 😂
Epic💪🏾❤️
The memories, I'm 51 and this still sounds amazing👌😁👍🤘

I'll be 64 in October and this band IS on my IPOD!!
52 and wholeheartedly agree.
This is a very special song to me. 1983 my Dad died and in the same time my brain started to realize how much beauty this world offers despite of loosing him. It was somekind of opening a door to a whole new world waiting for exploration.EDIT: To the world of music, of course.
I can relate. Also in 1983 my grandfather died and his passing also opened for me a whole new world of exploration.

I'm a white dude from the suburbs in a country literally from the other side of the planet. I like this song too. I also like some hip hop songs. Should I tell African Americans that I like their music as well?
Its a cool song, regardless of your race or where you are from.
Why do Americans break stuff down like this. Just say "I enjoy this song" . Stop with your identity politics FFS. Why do Americans do this? Its like a fkn disease.

Oh believe me, I'd love to go back 40 years for all sorts of reasons, one of which the music back then was fucking better than the garbage on radio in 2023.

I remember I was 13 when this song came out. Everytime I went to the out door swimming pool they had this in the jukebox. Every 10 minutes someone would put a quarter in and always picked this song. I heard it at least 20 times a day but I ain't complaining 🖤
Yell yeah with sum hardass taqutios and waters quac
That’s why I still listen to 80s & 90s
This song takes me back to hanging out at the skating rink and playing arcade games
Can you believe that this is now 40 years ago old? Well I can't! I know it was number one here in Britain in early 1983, and it still sounds great today! Thank you.
Indeed-and somehow you could say it is still number one today in a way-at least as a tune for sure!
Thank you there for that too!
Time flies man.. It makes me a bit sad..
@@danielkoralle5818 The song came out 1-10-1983 and the year is from this comment 3-9-2023 which equals over 40 years old. Nobody cares that you are born in 1993.

In the summer of 1983 I was on the way home from Bavaria with my grandmother on the Interzonal train to West Berlin. In the next compartment sat a bunch of punks and heard the song very loud. That was in the GDR just before the border to Berlin. I'll never forget it. 80s FOREVER!!! MM (D/1970)
Thats so cool
Love your memory! Dang, that was the time of clove cigarettes! So many lasting memories of going to Los Angeles and clubbing! 80s FOREVER 🫶🏻
That is very cool!!
@lenorefriedrich1634 Yes! That clove cigarette smell 😊 and the punk styles with the hair over the front and makeup!
What were the most popular songs in radio in 1983?
Everybody talked about how cheap and built for commercial success this song was.
Never realized how funky and groovy, and thus awesome, this really was.
fyi just the beat alone is mind numbinglly out of this world..
The opening Bass line always got me.
I think I realized it, when I I first heard this song on the radio, at least I thought the song was a lot cooler than many others at that time. The pop, "built for success" songs seemed to get more airplay, & are usually the most often heard on the "hits of the '80's flashbacks" on radio stations, & most visible on RUclips, but it wasn't those were my favorites, it was songs like this one that I remember, & thought were the best.
bass players know, it take serious talent to play the nick beggs line
I mean the bass riff brah… taste like he just hung around a bunch of brothers
No matter what you may think of this genre, this song, or Limahl's hair, there is no denying the awesomeness of that bass line.

Wait people don’t like the hair!?

Lots of good writing then! Didn't have all the modern technology to make everything so easy, quickly throwing stuff together, like today.

"Too Shy" is one of the greatest songs of all time and the bass line is so godlike. Just an amazing tune.

i loved Big Apple too
You put that beautifully. ♥️
too Shy, one of the best songs of all time? hahahaha, hahahahahahahaha, great joke, thanks, it was getting a boring day.
Imagine life without this genre of music
1980's best decade for modern pop music!
It's amazing to go back and hear how well-written and creative stuff was then. The pre-chorus in this is incredible. It seems like gems like this were coming out every week, and the standard of bass playing was so high.
Amen to that 👏👏
Cuz I had to! No computers 2 do it for u!. Even the guys FM the 59s 60s70s. Watch the wreaking crew doc! U will learn!
Seriously. When I got older and really started paying attention, I couldn't believe how good John Taylor was from Duran Duran.
I saw Howard jones with nick playing bass with him last night. Was an incredible concert, brought back millions of memories of growing up during the best decade ever. They joked on stage …what was better than the 80’a of amazing hair amazing clothes and amazing music ??? We were certainly blessed!!!!

The bass and the Roland synthesizer are amazing.
Damn the 80s era was priceless for 1 hit wonders, killer mullets, catchy jams, fun videos!
I have to agree. How about Dexys Midnight Runners in "Come on Eileen"
British night clubs in the mid 1980's with this type of music must have been pretty special
But, Limahl didn't just have 1 hit. The Neverending Story song title was his other big hit.
Does anyone know what happened too Limahl and why was he fired from the band ??
That bass riff is amazing
This album was good from start to finish, "Hang On Now" was always my favorite track.
Very grateful to say that I grew up in an era when nearly the entire top 40 charts on any given week were packed with fantastic songs like this one. Quality & quantity. Great thing is... music is timeless...any age group can now pick up a device & listen to whatever they like.
I can't believe this is 40 years old!! I remember it when it came out. How time flies! Great 80's classic!
I was either 16 or 17, depending on what month it was released in '83.
Nothing compares to the feeling old music evokes, almost taking you back to a time and place when things were simpler, and safer. Far away from the darkness of modern times. Thank God for this classic and so many others like it :)

I miss the 80s so much! Best times of my life!
I found this song in 2023! His voice and the bassline is just amazing. I love some of the 80s music. This song has sensual yet trance like feel to it.
Great memories back in the 80s coming home late on a Friday night and watching MTV for hours.
Gotta love the facial expressions and dances. The lyrics, bass, and melody are pure magic what an 80s classic!
