Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning, I sit around
Trying to smile, but the air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying (What did they say?)
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort, this heat has got right out of hand
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
The city is crowded, my friends are away and I'm on my own
It's too hot to handle so I got to get up and go
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer

The college years....so long ago!
I was heading into 9th grade after the summer of '84 --- not a cruel summer but actually kinda fun!
It's crazy, but I love this song more nowadays, than I did back in the 80's!

I was a kid in the 80s. It was so much fun. break dancing, bicycle groups of kids going to the pubic pool, everyone always outside playing sports or with a radio and waiting on that new 80 hit to come on so you could dance. My sisters making up routines to the music. Parents did worry about where you were just come home before the street light came on. Great fun.
I'm also a 80s kid and growing up in that era was so fun.

This song was made in 1983. It got lost in tunes like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Africa" by Toto, and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by The Culture Club. But it STILL is one of the best songs of that year. It just popped into my head for no reason today and here I am 🙂 That's the power of good music. It never really goes away.

As a metalhead, I can say without shame that I love this song. The structure, the chord changes, the backing vocals, everything is on point.
To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)
Same without shame
Same. It's got serious ABBA vibes.

Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany
Watching the karate kid as we speak
Excellent Post
Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.
On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.

Yes they were😐

Yes!
Well they weren’t exactly “carefree”. The was a major economic recession, renewed Cold War tensions, the AIDS epidemic, etc. But a lot of art at the time had a very “live for today” attitude, because any day could be your last.
Carefree for you maybe ;)
The production value of the 80's is just impeccable
Ya we need to tell people to stop remaking this song
It's like, are they going for 'high concept' with the shots of their feet and under the stairs etc, or is it, 'here ladies, have a few drinks and then get out there and have a laugh'? Or somewhere in between
It's been, over 41 years this song, is still standing local known and international respected.

@John Sluder, it seems like music back then embraced family, hope and opportunity. We had a taste of technology but we didn't choke on it like we do today. We had a sense of unity until smartphones took over. It's really sad. Human emotion is getting replaced by social media and then we wonder why our music no longer has life.

it was rough for me too. Was growing up, tough home life (mom was abusive), real hard time in school with kids teasing me incessantly... BUT.... I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. So despite all the badness I had in the 1980s, I still look back on it fondly for those things and wish I'd realized back then how great it was & that they'd go.
Yeah we got through it with massive underage drinking

Being a teen in the 80's would've been heaven
It was the best!
it was, without a doubt.
@@robmelstanek2358 It was the BEST and if i could go back I would but would never trade my kids in, I would take them with me:)

Look up what minimum wage was
One of my all time favorite songs. I truly miss the 80's era. There will never be an era like that ever again
Truly agree
Absolutely, and there will never be another day like today. Every day is a special day because you will never see that day again
......at least not while WE'RE still living.
i so wish i was born in the 80's
I grew up in the 90s/early ‘00s, but this song was played as a throwback often on KSFM 102.5 in Sacramento, CA. It reminds me of driving to Arden Mall with my mom, on a hot summer day. The nostalgia hurts so good 🥹
The One & Only Original
Cruel Summer Best Ever ❤
This is a masterpiece! Their voices are so pleasant
Yet powerful!
My type of women.
I think they are so underrated. They have wonderful voices.
Less than zero or desperately seeking Susan
Song 5, dancing 0, attitude 10. Madonna changed everything w the choreographed dancing clips
Ahhh, the 80's...the absolute best times of pure meaningful music.

Nothing like the 80's music 🎵
I don't think there will be music like this anymore 😢
Nope
Three London girls making it in the USA in the 80s. Represent. 🏴
Bristol England and 1 from Ireland
Tons of british bands made it hot in the 80s. It was called the 2nd British invasion
Yh I was just going to say The British really did invade the usa music wise. There are tons of usa 80s and before artists I love but in the 80s after Madonna & Jackson, the best music is what The Brits took
Ha ha Siobhan is Irish.
