Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany
Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.
On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.
Hey! Marke ! I am 52 as well and this song is the first record I bought with my piggy bank. I am listening g to it right now as I sip my morning coffee, getting up at Times to dance…I probably still will 30 years ahead from now. Have a great day!

I know this song from the 90s, had the privilege of hearing it being played by these content creator's playing in the background, unfortunately at the time I had forgotten the artist name but I knew the song title.... This is a masterpiece 👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿
Me, a baby to a young boy not realising how great the music was and also liked the 90’s and from there on music has gone to absolute trash, I mean at what point did it go so horribly wrong?
@@eccawarrior around 2004-2008 when all the “big names” rose up. Ya know, Justin Bieber, pretty much every other wannabe rapper kid at the time, all the trash that crawled its way out of the woodworks and found a home in places like the early apps like SoundCloud and stuff.
yknow if u search a bit u can find bands who make music which sounds like in the 80's because the style of the music became so iconic ppl are tryna recreate it, and with cellphones and internet and youtube, you can listen to the music you like wherever you want so yeah
This song is nostalgia. There's an ethereal quality to the song. Because the three sing the whole song in unison, not just the chorus, it almost sounds like whispering. This song always sends me.
Ngl, no matter how much I love this song its opening will forever remind me of the opening from the 'King Arthur and The Knights of Justice' (1992) show. What a blast!
The 80s were such a special decade. Cruel Summer takes me back to the summer of 1983. I truly miss the 80s and wish I could re-live it. Cruel Summer brings back SOOOOOO many AWESOME TEENAGE MEMORIES ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I completely concur! Growing up in the 80s and early 90s was actually really awesome! How very nice and 'simple' most things were back in those days (esp. pop and rock music-wise)! Such a very happy and careless childhood I had!❤ Thank you, Universe!!!
Y'all kids just don't understand the grooves and feels of this track back in the early-mid 1980s when this hit. Us Gen X kids were blown-away as it was not only a danceable track... But it was amazing to roller and ice skate to at the local rinks all across the U.S.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the summer of 1983. I swear, I can close my eyes and smell the chlorine in the air from the swimming pools!!
Mom, I was 10 in 1984 and I remember us going to the movie theaters back in the day and watching Karate Kid together. Every time I hear this song I think of you. Now your'e gone... I miss you so much! It's been a cruel summer ever since.
My wife of 18 years passed away 2 months ago today. This song came on the radio, haven't heard it in nearly 20 years, as it played I had to pull over and cry on the steering wheel. Song was always good, really hits close now.:(
it was rough for me too. Was growing up, tough home life (mom was abusive), real hard time in school with kids teasing me incessantly... BUT.... I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. So despite all the badness I had in the 1980s, I still look back on it fondly for those things and wish I'd realized back then how great it was & that they'd go.
That vibraphone and jangling guitar in the background, talk about HYPNOTIC beat ! The 80's were full of songs like this. Everything taken for granted. The magic of the internet allows us to fondly remember a much simpler place and time when good times flowed freely.
This music did come back to the limelight in 2011 a grounbreaking album by full mackintosh came out and suddenly a world of gen z underground musicians were making early 80s sounds again
I was born in Poland in 86' and I remember Bananarama being huge in Europe. We still have their cassettes at my parents house where I am for Christmas right now. Merry Everything everyone.
@@RandomSkyeRosesWell, the 80s weren't really pretty in the USSR and their allies. Wage and economic stagnation, an influx of American/Western European goods that were sold on black markets and expensive as hell. The music was good though.
I was born in '07 and grew up in the 2010s. Everyone was listing to Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift 🤢 but I was growing up on bananarama, tears for fears, madvillain, huey lewis and the news, and especially the footloose soundtrack

David Johnson 80s music was good MTV made it better. But I have to give the 60s the nod best music generation of all time. But the 80s definitely better than the 70s or the 90s or anything we have now
80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.
@@KNOWHOPE72 The 60s were The Beatles, the all time leader in record sales. Why because there still selling music 50 + years after they broke up. Add to that the Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix who set the standard for modern electric guitarists, Janis Joplin. Not to mention the great R&B & soul artists & groups. I love the 80s but please no comparison with the 60s.
I had no way of knowing at the time that I grew up in the most amazing decade of all time imo this music was and still is second to none. Argue with your grandma. One of my top 10 favorite songs of all time.
This song has something poignantly mystical and melancholy longing about it. The gray-blue fading light in the big city backdrop at 2:10 reinforces this enchanting impression.
bro its the 80s in general, theres something different about this time period and i dont know what it is. It was some sort of transition? I dont know but sometimes i get overwhelmed but looking at pictures and videos of the time. Many MANY people share the same feelings, even if they werent alive at this time. It was truly special, maybe one of if not the more significant point in history. I am truly blessed to have been able to experience it,
it was really hot that summer too. kinda slowed everything down and made it surreal. then this song came out. i still remember wiping sweat of my shoulder wearing a wife beater like WTF. the a year or 2 later came game 6. magic

Most awesome time ever in the world not like today which is violence everywhere everybody was actually happy at that time there is a couple things going on around the world that were bad like the Cold War but it was still a good time to be alive
@@luisrodriguez-mb7ccAbsolutely, from The Beach Boys to KC and the Sunshine Band. I grew up in the 1980s but I think we had around 35 years of great modern music where people composed music and played instruments.
To go back to the 80s, if only for a little while. Even if you aren't lucky enough to have been alive then, this was a true golden age that everyone can escape to. No social media, no internet, smartphones, etc., just awesome tunes, movies and good times. If time travel is ever invented I'm going back there without a second thought.

One of my all time favorite songs. I truly miss the 80's era. There will never be an era like that ever again

Absolutely, and there will never be another day like today. Every day is a special day because you will never see that day again

The 70s & 80s were the best for popular music, and were a special time for those of us fortunate to grow up during those decades.
Yup. Best music ever made.
TodayWasAGoodDay9 The song writing was so good.

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them..
Same here! And with some early to mid 90’s.
I completely concur! Growing up in the 80s and early 90s was actually really awesome! How very nice and 'simple' most things were back in those days (esp. pop and rock music-wise)! Such a very happy and careless childhood I had!❤ Thank you, Universe!!!

The 80's were tough for me. I was so unhappy that music was my only escape. Só I am grateful for songs like this. They kept me alive
It was a mix of good and bad memories, but yeah the music was an escape listening to the top songs on a radio in my bedroom.
I'm glad you survived, no one should be cruel to another.
it was rough for me too.

@Existential Transhumanism nah, i was just making a quick meme, i do actually like this song
The 80's produced the best feel good pop music, not to mention the most magical music.
80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.
I mean idk the 70s started the psychedelic thing so 80s is a fresher feel on a slightly psychedelic funky pop
Thats funny, I grew up and feel the same way about the sixties.
@@jamesofalo6247 They say every generation feels the decade of their youth was the best. Yet the 80''s had genuinely MAGICAL music, TV and movies.
