To understand this song and the entire debut album it's on (The Hurting, 1983), one thing must be said: both members of the band were enchanted by the work of the psychotherapist Arthur Janov, whose most renowned book was Primal Scream (1970). Janov was the inventor of “primal therapy”, a treatment that encouraged the patient to explore his childhood traumas, experiencing them for a second time and then expressing the long-repressed pain. One way to release this pain is this primal scream. The same name of the duo, not by chance, comes from a psychotherapeutic treatment developed by Janov, during which the patient lives again the earliest sensations of the perinatal age, hence the name “Tears for Fears”. Both members felt that their parents had not given them love, but only a weak, “Pale Shelter”. Composing The Hurting was a way to throw out all the things they absorbed in the childhood, to take the feelings of abandonment, rejection and anger and turn them into something active. With its pure emotions, The Hurting is the album for those who have experienced what being imprisoned in our own emotions means; for those who have felt the desperation that makes its way, when you cannot escape, whether it comes from childhood or not. Not just a hit maker. These guys really knew how to arrange and produce songs, incorporating interesting breaks, instrumentation, lyrics, and passion that helped put them above the majority of 80s bands.
The extended version of this has to be there best song amongst many. Especially the longer introduction and the extended base guitar breakdown in the middle.
Yes it was. We bought a single every week with our pocket money. My first was If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby. Years gone by and still love it. 70s and 80s were great times to grow up in.
To be honest, I’m not surprise that after four decades, the power of these songs can still stir up the senses of today’s generation. New Wave music is the best, hence, it’s forever!
No question. Let's remember this was the start of the MTV age. Pop music was coming into its peak. In all of its variations. 1983 will go down in long term history as an epic year for music.

Probably the best New Wave band of the 80s, their transition from synth pop (at the beginning of the decade) to jazz influenced songs (at the end of the decade) shows how good they were by then.

Then how Rolands ego grew and grew until it devoured TFF. you can see that with Kurts look on the video for "woman in chains" even today with them reunited, In the interviews Kurt very cautious and Roland very look at me Im everything with his ego. Where is the fun of the group it had during the beginning.

One of the best song ever , this brings me back to my childhood in italy ❤ I was so happy with my grandparents my parents and friends over there 🇮🇹 time changed I don't feel that happiness anymore . Only this music is still here that helps to cope with this dark days
Keep going, things will improve
I long for the 80s too my friend, my dad would play this in his pick up while me and my 10 year old mates sat in the rear bed of the truck, no seatbelts, no real seats, no cares!!
I love when they both share the songs. Curt's Angelic voice balanced out with Roland's Dark Booming vocals.
Absolute perfection
agreed
Totally agree, and there voices blend very well together!
O Curt tem a vóz angelical, fisionomia angelical, olhar angelical...ele é um anjo???❤
Yes, I thought rolands singing is more in his throat, and Curts is more in his nose. I dont know about the Curt one but Im positive on Rolands. 😅

1982, 1983, 1984, the three very best years ever in the Music History, without doubts!! Too bad Music is never be the same quality again :(
Music is the same quality. You just do not listen to it.
They are putting out a remastered version of all their songs. 👍
Every year of the 80s created someones story
maybe 82 83 and 84 were just your ears and mind's best focus on music.
Not sure if they were the best years ever but they were nonetheless tremendous. So many great albums/singles were released in those years.

One of the best overlooked songs of all time!
Source: auralcrave.com
Of course, John and Yoko also did primal scream therapy with Dr. Janov, influencing the Plastic Ono Band album, released in October 1970.
Thank you very much for this comment. Very important info!
Oh wow, that is really cool to know. Thanks.
Very impressed by your knowledge and thankful for your patient explanation.
If you are a chick we should get married. If you are a dude. . . Cool story bro.
Not just a hit maker. These guys really knew how to arrange and produce songs, incorporating interesting breaks, instrumentation, lyrics, and passion that helped put them above the majority of 80s bands.

I absolutely adore TFF, this song and this video. What would this world be without them?
A Brilliant Track 👍👍👍 80's Sound in Perfection ❤❤❤
I still have a green vinyl version of this single that I bought from Woolworths. Buying music was a lot more interesting in the old days.
Yes it was. We bought a single every week with our pocket money. My first was If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby. Years gone by and still love it. 70s and 80s were great times to grow up in.
Yes no one nowadays is going to have fond memories of downloading a song. The music’s rubbish now anyway.
Would you ever consider selling this to me?
ironically my parents had to just dispose of a lot of vinyls they had since we had no room for them anymore, they would be worth so damn much nowadays
Yes picked up many bargain lps from woolies.
I was 18 in 1983. Great Times. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could.

fantastico esta musica !! melhor banda Tias Fofinhas!
I'm so obsessed with this song!
Sometimes I wonder what it was like to hear these songs new. I envy those people who lived during the times 80s classics were released
Not just the musical environment it was much easier everything so much cheaper, nothing but possibility. No social media just real life
Every Thursday you would wait for the new videos to release.
The epic hits seemed to be non stop between 83 and 86.
Great time to be alive.
can't name one thing better now
Oh my gosh..... I love this song so......much. I remember hearing this track, change, and shout and just fell in love with the band. They’re so freaking talented, what I like about them is how much thought they put into the writing off there songs, there music is very conscious. I just heard there new song Tipping Point and I love it so much. There music is beautiful they really make you, if your that type off person who really.....listens to music have you captivated by the lyrics and message in there songs. I would love to see them in concert.❤️☝🏾

Uncle Chopper you have no right to say that
Probably the best New Wave band of the 80s, their transition from synth pop (at the beginning of the decade) to jazz influenced songs (at the end of the decade) shows how good they were by then.
Because they don't do the same thing twice
I love this song 😎❤

Roland got hit in the eye with the plane, I wonder who caught his wrath and what did he say. looking back at TFF from the earliest videos to the break up of the band its amazing how it started up where it appeared everyone got the spotlight in the videos, like every brand member got exposure, a piece of the pie. Then how Rolands ego grew and grew until it devoured TFF. you can see that with Kurts look on the video for "woman in chains" even today with them reunited, In the interviews Kurt very cautious and Roland very look at me Im everything with his ego. Where is the fun of the group it had during the beginning.

How can I be sure

I asked for more and more
How can I be sure
When you don't give me love (You gave me pale shelter)
You don't give me love (you give me cold hands)
And I can't operate on this failure
When all I want to be is
Completely in command
How can I be sure
For all you say you keep me waiting
How can I be sure
When all you do is see me through
I asked for more and more
How can I be sure
When you don't give me love (You gave me pale shelter)

And I can't operate on this failure
When all I want to be is

I'm calling you, I'm calling you
I ask for more and more
How can I be sure
