Ceremony is their perfect transitional song. I think it was finding light with New Order in the dark shadows of Joy Division.
    Powerful, emotional and hypnotic.

Agreed. But Procession might be even more transitional. It's kind of the perfect blend of NO and JD. I think Ceremony is more of an NO song than JD. I think all the did is perform it live a couple times before Ian died. It was fully formed and recorded as NO.

I’ve always felt like this song embodies the difference of joy divisions and new order. They’re like light and day. Joy division is the long lonely night, but new order and ceremony specifically feel like waking up to a brand new beautiful day and feeling a sense of optimism

It most definitely was a difficult time for them: Also as well, from reading interviews over the years, many of the group didn’t listen to their first album “Movement” for several years, simply because recording it was such a horrendously difficult time for them emotionally, and the thought of even listening to the album would have brought back bad memories of that time…
I remember reading a few interviews, from Hook and Morris, years later, talking about the time they recorded “Movement”, and Martin Hannett (a genius producer, but who could also be a very difficult character at the best of times), went from being difficult to totally off-the-wall unbearable to work with during the recording, and this was a main reason this was the last album they worked with him..

    [Verse 1]
This is why events unnerve me
They find it all, a different story
Notice whom for wheels are turning
Turn again and turn towards this time
All she asks the strength to hold me
Then again the same old story
Word will travel, oh so quickly
Travel first and lean towards this time
    [Verse 2]
Oh, I'll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
Watching her, these things she said
    The times she cried
Too frail to wake this time
    [Verse 3]
Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
    Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me and then you start watching
    Watching forever
    [Outro]
    Forever, watching love grow
    Forever, letting me know
    Forever

I always thought Peter Hook should have sung more. He isn’t a great singer either but he can at least stay in key. But to be fair to Bernard this is barely a year after Curtis’ death and he never meant to be the singer. Stephen Morris is even worse, his attempts at singing were almost comically bad.

Watched a great documentary about New Orders 2nd album; love how down to earth & likeable they all are. As a kid listening to music I'd assumed adults had it all sorted; I didn't realise they got nervous, like Barney initially was about his voice, I didn't realise how brave he was to stand up as 'accidental' front-person; fair-play, & to the others, for doing their thing & enhancing the lives of the rest of us with their music, something I'd never have the front to do! 💜
