Hook and Morris are so good, and Gilbert fit right in. You can see how stressful these early shows are on Sumner, and they are a testament to overcoming what some may refer to as a lack of talent to become a consummate front man. Their perseverance has brought enormous beauty into my life.
To those complaining about the crowd , this ain't a song to dance to, it's one in which you contemplate. New order gave plenty tunes to dance to but this is a joy division song. It's one where you think deep and your mind goes to someplace else. What you do is close your eyes and start bobbling your head. That's what the crowd does here.
I'm kind of getting back into New Order after recently seeing Peter Hook. I have just discovered that he was one hell of a drummer even way back then. He is always on his game.
The eternal enigma of New Order. They're all over the place half the time live and yet you can count on one hand the number of bands whose music moves me as much as theirs. God love them.
They looked so young, awkward, lost and scared yet they're still up there playing. They have my utmost admiration for moving on despite their tragedy and shortcomings; it shows their desperation. Others thought they were done, Tony Wilson expected A Certain Ratio to be the next success story. Against all odds, it was the remnant of Joy Division that would yet again save Factory Records.
+canuck21 1. They didn't "look" young, they WERE young. 2. It shows their "desperation"? Dead wrong, it shows their resolve and persistence, perhaps even courage although that might be a stretch. In spite of any tragedy, life goes on, and so we all must as well.
Weld 797 \m/ The perception of youth is all relative. Sure they were young compared to now, but they were in their mid 20s in this video which is rather normal. When I say young, I meant like little boys.. and girl.
Actually Sumner made a lot of mistakes live on guitar in the Joy Division period and early New Order too - perhaps since then have taught to play his part correctly.
Yea I know technically it sounds bad, but I think its the perfect version of it because it is channeling the suicide and sadness of Curtis and you can see that the band were struggling with the loss.
***** Probably not, unless Ian changed his style with them as he wasn't completely gothic and baritone. He actually had an amazing tenor baritone range that wouldn't have restrained him at all in his experimentation of style if he lived to see the rest of the eighties. But who knows really since we don't live in that alternate universe.
This is so raw. They look like they were just told about Ian fifteen minutes ago. And they are BABIES. Sumner can barely get the words out, the guitars pushing him through, and the incredible double-timeheartbeat of the drumming, an engine that can't stop. And the audience standing around grimly like they're at a wake, and the lone man dancing.

I don’t think they realised how massive they would be. 40 years later and this song is simply breathtaking. What phenomenal musicians. Imagine being born 40 years from now. No one will tell you how good they were.
All of them are complete musicians. And Peter and Gillian are very good singers (much better than Bernard) But I like Sumner singing out of tune, loosing his voice, I think very organic. New Order is - like Joy Division was - very special. Always will be
This must have been so hard for them to perform, so soon after Ian’s death. Hats off to them for continuing on with the music. RIP Ian Curtis. You are missed, and I hope you finally found your peace.
I think this was recorded on 23 April 1981. To give a bit of context, Ian Curtis had died on 18 May 1980, Gillian Gilbert had joined the group in October 1980, and there first album Movement would be released in November 1981, about seven months after this performance. So this is very early New Order and Sumner is not yet an experienced singer, hence why he struggles. Hook and Morris were doing the same thing they had done in Joy Division, so they are giving a much needed stability to the group while Sumner finds his feet, and Gillian Gilbert picks up the slack as the guitarist.
Such a perfect song. Such a perfect band. Joy Division/New Order on the top. One of theirs masterpieces. And Ian Curtis' lyrics are wonderful, beautiful, so rough and so powerful.
