New Order - The Perfect Kiss (live Toronto '85)

- An extraordinary video of 'The Perfect Kiss' from International Centre - Toronto - August 4th, 1985. For some reason, this wasn't included on "Live In Glasgow", which features three other songs ('We All Stand', 'Age Of Consent', and 'Temptation') instead. Much of this is a close-up of a shirtless Hooky...quite a contrast to the clinical approach the band exhibited in Johnathan Demme's short film of this song. This recording is said to originate directly from Paul Boyd, who filmed it...unfortunately Paul passed away a couple of years ago, so this is dedicated to his memory.

Nice to see Peter Hook playing with his pleasure zone.
lol
Well I must say he knows how to move those hips ;-0
@Debra Zemplinsky - Hook's the only one moving on stage!
And sexy shirtless
Hooky had to choose between being a bass player or a porn star
Hooky fan here!
I'm not sure he stuck with his decision the way he molested that bass.
The pelvic thrust drove him insane ( a rocky horror joke)😂
Hooky playing his bass so high up the fret gave the band a distinctive sound that no one else had. It gave an additional dimension to their electronic sound.
yea? what else you going to tell us? the band is called new order?
Totally agree with both points.
For years I thought Hookies bass was actually a guitar! And yeah it was complementary to their electronics…
@@zygmanfroid9709Yer mum is great in the sack. Bet ya didn't know that.
"i'd always though he waaaas a fookin mad baastard"
outstanding line
playing cowbell with those shorts, white socks, black loafers! is pure greatness. lol
More COWBELL!!!
White socks and black slip ons were never cool 😂😂😂
That's alternative greatness.
He has balls. Probably 3.
@@jamesbensley5790
Slip ons were never cool full stop!
Never mind the short pants and sports socks 🤣
@@jamesbensley5790Wrong
Simply the best New Order song period.
Yup. Absolutely.
Hooky's bass wound up pregnant with twins after this manhandling!!!
Is this true?
@@wingerding yes, ian and curtis
I STOPED MY JOB ONLY TO SAY YHAT YOUR COMMENT WAS AWESOME, KKKKKKKKK
So did I! 😅
It’s certainly more attractive than his long standing girlfriend, Caroline aherne
Hooky´s bass is unreal, dictates the melody and gifts machismo to the song, just sublime...
Barney's white socks and the black dress shoes is just so him. Peter rocks like a mad man.
Barney in his little shorts and socks is adorable.
Pretty sure Hooky’s bass climaxed in this song...several times.
Hook's the man. One of his best songs to play bass art home with.
Peter Hook rocked it.
And still doing it..
Hooky is a total VIBE. No one else has the Essence this bloke possesses.
I think we can all agree though that New order/the music was not his driving force whereas the rest of the group were the band and music first, then everything else 2nd.
Either way so happy they blessed us with all of these crunchy tunes while they were all on the same page even if it didn’t last as long as the universe would have hoped 💙
1:28 Steve´s like: Not yet hooky!
+Kareny Hernandez And Hooky's like: What? Oh aye.
Not sure who's the joke on here , Steve or Hooky. Still , OMG WHAT A HEADF*CK. AMAZING SOUND
I noticed that and found your comment later.
Good catch !.
And I guess the riff played by Bernard right after was a try to make this mistake more musically natural.
I was at this show and just found this video today. I can vividly remember hooky playing the drums on this song. Amazing after all these years to find this footage
I can't even imagine the energy you must have felt seeing this live. I come back every now and then to watch this and I am blown away every time. Not going to lie, Peter Hook as a lliiiiitttttlllle bit to do with it...?
most bands tried to be as cool as new order. they all failed. Literally the most important musicians since the beatles. changed rock music forever.
agreed 100%. new order (and joy division) were the real thing. they were having fun and didn't give a shit about the industry. only when they started caring is when it all went downhill.
fuck the beatles
All the muscle in the sound is coming from Hooky.
Hooky is a beast!!
I have ptsd from Peter Hook's hip movements
Hooky’s bass, never unmatched, so ridiculously unique and GOLD
Probably the best bass riff in their discog, just legendary
I don’t think it’s possible to sound as flat and off key as Barney but still sound so good.
He's perfect for New Order
Yeah, and rocking those loafers at the same time.
Playing that high up the fretboard is not easy to do with the bass slung so low down- Hooky manages to do that whilst at the same time doing a quality performance. Great tune.
KongoBongo I don’t play bass (sure wish I could!) but have always wondered if there is a reason Hooky plays with such a long strap? He still seems to do it? Can any bass players answer?
@@lisaknell6018 He still does that - check the "Peter Hook & The Light" live shows.
@@deukaedalso4367 and he's still the same with Jack along side of him
@@lisaknell6018 Because it looks cool
What a find. Yes there is pot of treasure at the end of the rainbow and it is band called New Order. So need more bands like this 2022
I always got the feeling that Hook was the rock side of New Order and Sumner wanted to go into other directions with electronic sounds, Morris loved playing with drum machines so might have tipped the scale toward the latter, and Gilbert, well she's the synth side, so maybe that's why Hook's no longer with them. Music Complete is a great album, far closer to their late 1980s sound than their more recent albums, but they still were best back when Hook was there -- or maybe that's my nostalgia for better times talking.
You'd be right, that's how Hooky describes himself mostly in his book 'Substance'. He ended up fighting to get his bass on tracks that were becoming more and more synthetic each album. In my opinion, the mix of both is where the magic is
It's what made the band great.
Sure you can program a drum machine and make a bass batch , but then it's not a band any more
May as well be a DJ.
This at the time and still today is a unique and truly organic mix of sound.
That bass is what makes the song , the heart of new order was and will always be the bass .
1985 is such a great time for this band.
Look at peter hook there, the sexy bastard! Has anyone invented the time machine yet? I always thought he looked like the type who would give you an amazing, yet brief time in a alley way somewhere!
Is this sort of comment supposed to get you a husband!
I’ll meet him in a dark alley, anytime.
@@jasongallagher54 I actually have a husband. The comment was a a bit of drunken fun more than 2 years ago
@@jenniferreid7072 I know I’m just joshing
😂🤣
I would absolutely adore seeing them in a small venue like this.
Love hearing Hooky's bass lines but wish Gilian's synth masterwork on this piece was more audible. Epic nevertheless
ohhh my god...I WISH I WAS HOOK'S BASS!!❤❤❤
I never get tired seeing his f*cking awesome vídeo. It seems like the stage manager would know exactly how Hooky will do with bass in this gig and put the camera over him. Thanks a lot for this and thank you for sharing this treasure.
I like how cool he looks in his little shorts and Hooky shirtless looks badass.
Sexy- hormones
0:08 "Thieves like us!!!"
*"NO"*
Absolute gold
Excellent improvisation from Barney there when he forgot the words.
always loved this song and its layers - my favorite NO track. i just learned Peter Hook originally started playing Bass up high because his cheap $h!tty amp setup was muddled in the lower octaves. thank goodness that's all he could afford at the time!
Wow so great to see this, I was at this show without my camera and clearly remember Bernard's short shorts, hah!
I toured with this band several times and for the life of me I don’t remember seeing Hooky take his shirt off- that I couldn’t have forgotten! nor Bernard with socks & shorts, would have tackled them both for different reasons! Brilliant clip
you were a roadie? they both used to take their tops off a lot in the 80s
Bernard was wearing shorts for years
i don't think I could ever get tired of hearing the full length version of this fantastic song. I hate the edited version of it though since it cuts out Peter Hook's bass solo.
This is stunning.
Peter Hook in the 80s looked like Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
Yippie ki yay Bernard Sumner
OMG!! i thought i was the only one who realized this! hooky SO reminds me of alan rickman in die hard...
I worked this show, only 35 years ago!!
The Hooky Sound IS New Order (and Joy Division) ...
Still one of their best songs!
Thanks so much for posting this. F'n great track, and the sound quality on this is really good. Bernard looks so funny in his little shorts and socks!
He forgot his pants! Seeing Hook close-up, hammering at those drums, shirtless was such a treat!
Blessings on the cameraperson for being right next to the hot(!) and sweaty SHIRTLESS PETER HOOK!!......oh yeah- love the song, too.......
sking55 Indeed. I could die for putting myself in that position or for fucking hooky !
get in line, girl
Statistics show that bands never recover losing their frontman. So Glad NO is one of the statistical anomaly’s
Bands never recover from losing a bass player like Peter hook
@@jabsol5120they're doing just fine
Thanks for the upload. I've been binge watching New Order live performances trying to relive my youth! Love this band!!
All my teens ive love bass and now eben at 56 and hooky bass is pure joy ..see new order o2 london 2 week ago and oh so good but shame hooky not there and god bless ian curtis ..oh so missed
I was at that show and it has always been a running joke ... Bernard's shorts! It was damn hot though that day!
@toronto daddy This show was at the International Centre in Mississauga byt the airport. It was either July or August of 1985. New Order came back a few years later to Massey hall and later to the CNE in 1989 and 91 I think.
Was at this show...thanks for the extraordinary VID.
Tempus fugit
i love how out of time and tune they often were in the live performances. case in point when Hooky almost started too early. it was all about the ideas and the songs
Peter hook gives meaning to the lyrics from the Rocky horror picture show that says “the pelvic thrust ,it will drive you insane”
Performing at the International Centre in Toronto is the strangest venue. Of all the places to play in the city, performing by the airport in the suburbs at a trade centre where they hold car shows and office conventions... wish I went!
This is a masterpiece. Hooky is in a class of his own. I wish he still played with them
His choice not to
@@Thunderchild-gz4gcLol no
My god Hook is bad-ass. And Barney has nice legs :P
my thoughts exactly...
A treasure!! So glad i found this video ❤❤❤
Clássico absoluto do New Order! Na sua melhor fase...
This song is a Classic...Love it😍
New Order come Back to CHILE
I saw them three days before at the Felt Forum in New York. Still have the ticket stub and playlist. Transformative. Thanks for taking and sharing this. You are a hero!
Dope.
Peter is gratuitous, narcissistic, drowns out his bandmates. It shouldn't work at all, but I've never heard the bass sound like this before or since. Maybe it's where the camera is, maybe it's just that night, but my God something special happened here. He humps his bass for 8 minutes and it still seems like an understatement for this performance. He even screws up a few times - doesn't matter.
Great quality, Hooky is as clear as day.
Great sound, and great camera angle-- The Hook-cam!
One could call this "The Perfect Kiss" by Peter Hook, and his backup band New Order.
one could if one new nothing about the band.
@@jamespohl-md2eq I "knew" something about New Order.
@@JakeMcClake2Even w my error the point stands.
Hooky is all early during this. Check Steve in the back going, "no! not yet!"
Cuanta energía!!!...excelente vídeo. Peter y su glorioso bajo, en esta canción me llenan de alegría. Simplemente ÉPICO
Hooky is killing it !❤❤❤ with the drummer , Morris, he is above the rest of the band as musicians -- Summer is good but not as good and Gilbert is almost acceptable . Still , a great band --🇬🇧
Wow,,, watching this you begin to get how influential Peter Cook was on New Orders sound..... phenomenal do do dee do doop.
Hooky est le meilleur bassiste, grand show merci messieurs
Hooky is high as a kite, love it!
I can't stop watching it.... :)
If only they could have it sound like this when played live today...

Great upload, thank you very much ! Regards

OMG I was there.....thanks for this~!
Imagine being young and on something watching this live...
I used to an still do....been watching them live for 38 yrs...they aint a touch on what they used to be live...from raw to same old sets....pity they was the bollocks back then....but I still go and what them and Hookys band...FAC383
Jeezus....i need to have soo much new order played during my bday party!
Don't give a damn :)
Genialidad que sorprende en la armonia de sonidos..
peter hook is fuckin hot! love him!
Sexy ~ Shirtless of course😂🎉
I think that bass needs a cigarette.
And a glass of whiskey ^^
thanks for sharing insane - wow just wow
All I gotta say is 'Peter Hook'. This is fucking timeless.
Hooky is awesome. thanks for the vid.
We need “New Order” now
Sounds Awesome. Wish I was there.
Hooky adds dirt to an otherwise clinical song. Perfect mixture
The fact it's clinical is a feature not a bug. I LOVE the stone cold icy syntheticness of this.
Grit maybe, dirt makes it sound sleazy xd
Does Bernard even own pants or
meow kittens he did back in the 70s maybe?
He was read to go to bed
unfortunately, yes
Those shorts are outrageous!
That bass playing is amazingggg, fucking love hooky. Also Bernard looks so cool and stylish with the sport-short look
Ian Curtis dance on this would have been legendary ! Proof JD/NO were far far ahead of their time
I was 8 years old but still consider it a crime I wasn't there.
I was there. Great night
There were 2 true musicians in this Group. Love found them. Hooky and Bernard are great, but their egos were as great as well. Truth hurts sometimes. They did everything they could to tear it all apart.
Toronto International Centre show was on August 4 1985, followed by Massey hall on Nov 26, 1986, and Nov 30, 1986 at MacMaster U (Hamilton) where they closed with Love will Tear us Apart, Sept 3, 1987 at the CNE.
One of the Greatest 🔊🔊🔊
Sumner decided I'm going to wear shoes that in no way match the rest of what I'm wearing....
Yeesh, I put that video up just about four years ago (it is otherwise completely unreleased, it wasn't one of the bonuses included in the 'Live In Glasgow' DVD) and people have sunk to slagging each other off in the comments? Why did I bother?
This now appears on the "Low-life" box set...
Love this!!
Espetacular!
Great Video!
Funny how Hooky comes in early at 1:28 and Stephen signals him off. I know I am getting old when Hooky speaks of how his back has taken a hit for playing so bent over by his ankles so many times.
