It's so crazy how good this band was. You've got a drummer playing keyboards, a bassist who plays high notes on his bass and switches over to electric drums when needed, the singer also plays guitar and cowbell, and you've got a woman on other keyboards who was never with the band before. Somehow they're all doing this and putting together into one amazing song. Then you have to think that 3 out of 4 of these bandmates recently had their lead singer kill himself just before they were set to embark on a big tour that could have made them huge. They decided to go on, but despite going on, they didn't simply replace the singer. One of their own became the singer, so the new member that joined the band wasn't even replacing him. She was more in the background making sure the electronic stuff was going smoothly.
My favourite song ever. It's the future that never happened, it's the sound of falling in love and the sound of empires falling. It's fucking fantastic.
stefanofocacci perhaps I’m a little ignorant with the terminology when it comes to guitar playing in general because I’ve only played for a few years myself. Maybe it would be better to point out, from my limited understanding, that bass lines and bassists sound as if they’re in the background but with Peter Hook in New Order, it feels like the opposite where his playing and bass lines are brought to the foreground. Maybe that makes more sense. 😊
@@stefanofocacci he does play chords a lot. not in this song but a lot of his most famous basslines are him playing chords (or triads more often). he plays it like a lead instrument more than a rhythm instrument.
5 years ago when I was 15 I watched this music video and was extremely inspired by hooky’s bass playing and immediately started learning myself. Today I saw him play live and even met the bloke. He will forever be my favourite musician and paved what music means to me forever. Thank you Peter ❤
He inspired me to play the bass as well. I bought one, but I had to sell in to by an AC unit almost 30 years ago. I saw him live three times live and was able to shake his hand in 2016 when he played in San Francisco. I will never forget it.
I've been listening to them since the 80s and I'm not sure if I seen them live because I always got fcked up at concerts. This is one of the greatest albums and times ever
The Perfect Kiss . Is to me is one of the most perfect songs I have heard in my entirety . The sound to me is like being in the sky and being able leap from cloud to cloud. Perfect Bliss
New Order deserved a Stop Making Sense-esque treatment by Jonathan Demme. maybe even a movie. I mean, this right here feels like the intro to a hypothetical movie about them. also I wish Demme could've filmed Stephen going at it on his drum set like he wanted.
What is the intimate insight that you get from watching this? I don't think there is any. The video has some intimacy in the sense that it is simply a band recording the master version of a song, but there isn't any "intimate insight" here. Can you provide a single "intimate insight" that you get from watching this video?
Jonathan Demme does an amazing job of capturing the band in this video….he manages to capture their personalities and foreground the music at the same time in such an intimate way…you feel like you’re in the studio with New Order…its fantastic. Everything looks sort of spontaneous…but the whole thing is carefully crafted….pure genius
Incredible right. I thought this was demme before I saw the credits. He always gets in really close. Much of silence of the lambs is characters looking directly into the lens
just a totally epic, stonking track from one of the UK's historically most underrated bands. In their own way, New Order were as influential as the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zep, Floyd, the Pistols, The Smiths etc.
I have listened to and loved this song since it's release back in the day. I cried, actual tears, as I read the lyrics (for the first time) while watching the video today. I felt like this was such an 'homage' to JD and Ian Curtis with the talents of New Order that did not imitate JD. This group has been an influential part of my life as well as helping to define the era I was lucky to experience. BTW, I just saw them for the first time on November 18, 2023, at the Darker Waves Fest in Huntington Beach, CA the same day as my wife's 65th birthday, a thrill I will not forget! Please, no hate for the wordiness and emotion of this comment. :)
this song will be one of the greatest gift you can ever give to your children when we get old. Pure raw, talent, precision, dedication and heart. 80s has a special energy on it.
Nothing beats taking your teenage daughters to a concert (Peter Hook and The Light) of songs they grew up listening to their whole life because this is the soundtrack to my life too, and the 3 of us jamming to this and other amazing songs! PRICELESS!!!
The way they do this is amazing. The drummer is on keyboards, the bassist is also playing drums, the singer plays guitar and cow bell, and you've got the new member on keyboards making sure it all goes well. Somehow they're all doing all of this stuff and it comes together as a great song.

I'll admit that I haven't delved quite deep enough into New Order to make much of a list of favorite tracks, however, "The Perfect Kiss" and "True Faith" are DEFINITELY among my favorites thus far... Sadly, "Blue Monday" probably won't make that list, sad as that's the ONLY New Order song that we ever got on the radio here in the U.S....that said, it IS by default the song which exposed me to New Order LOOOOOONG before I even knew there WAS such a band or even knew what the name of "Blue Monday" was. I do like the song, it certainly has nostalgic value...but compared to "True Faith", it just lacks much in the way of depth. Saying all of that, I DEF find it amazing that a band could put SO MUCH DEPTH into what sounds on surface like just simple 80s pop songs! You listen to a song like "True Faith", that song is about mental illness and drug addiction...yet it sounds every bit as poppy as say "Cars" which is just some guy singing about driving in a car. These were true musical artists and I'm glad to have finally discovered more than just "Blue Monday" within their hitlist...♥️♥️♥️♥️😁😁😁😁
HERE ARE THE LYRICS :) I stood there beside myself, Thinking hard about the weather Then came by a friend of mine Suggested we go out together Then I knew it from the start: This friend of mine would fall apart Pretending not to see his gun, I said "let's go out and have some fun" I know, you know, you believe in a land of love I know, you know, we believe in a land of love I have always thought about Staying here and going out Tonight I should have stayed at home, Playing with my pleasure zone He has always been so strange, I'd often thought he was deranged Pretending not to see his gun, I said "let's go out and have some fun" I know, you know, we believe in a land of love I know, you know, we believe in a land of love When you are alone at night You search yourself for all the things That you believe are right If you give it all away You throw away your only chance to be here today Then a fight breaks out on your street You lose another broken heart in a land of meat My friend, he took his final breath Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death
NO is a prime example of why I love "weird" British pop. No one else pulls this off so uniquely and well to delight us for decades. Thanks for the music of my teenage years. Greets from Germany.
Every time this pops up I think I'll just watch a couple of minutes but I always end up watching the whole thing. A musical journey and brilliant filmmaking.
Went through high school listening to the Police and struggling to find my identity. Then as a freshman in college I hear girl across the hall playing The Perfect Kiss. It was strange, new, nobody else liked it, I loved it. I'd love to relive that moment now 32 yrs later. To take the confidence I have now and apply it to the love of alternative music. I probably would have even passed Calculus this first time :)
I remember an interview with Bernard saying in one of the music newspapers or somewhere else from a few years ago describing New Order as a cross between The Cure and The Pet Shop Boys.
Where the hell have I been ? I have never heard this song until LAST NIGHT? It is now one of my favorite songs ever, so that is definitely the plus of this experience.
I remember the day I saw this video. It was 1985 and I was 16 years old walking through the mall. I stop and watched it all the way to the end and then I became one of their greatest fans to this day!
I was around the same age as you. I first saw it on a Much Music (Canada's version of MTV) "Spot Light" where they featured 5 or 6 videos from a band. I recorded it on VCR tape and watched it many many times. Now RUclips let's me relive that moment!
According to the date displayed right at the beginning of the video, it was recorded on 26th March 1985. So, happy birthday to the best music video ever.
I love this song so much. ❤❤❤. Watching this video in January 2024. This performance 🎭 is absolutely amazing. I’m almost out of words to describe it. ❤❤❤
Have loved this over 5 decades now (including partials). Reminds me very clearly of a time in the late 80s. Who on earth puts frogs in a track that is so outstanding? Oh yes, New Order does!
This is absolutely my favorite track from New Order, and to me the greatest synth track of all time. Raw explosive creativity not tied down to simple rhythm, constant ever changing movements like a python’s path through a field of reeds! The frog sounds draw me to the sounds and smells of a spring morning. I just love them so much!
I use this song to measure my time in the bathroom, when I need to take a REALLY QUICK shower. The moments when the beats hit are the PERFECT TIMING to do all of the washes. 😭🙌🏻
Nothing gets me like the look of people deeply focused on their craft. Everyone's on point here, and I especially love watching Gillian and Peter so dialed in.
They're so young and adorable in this video. "How the hell do we portray this programmed song live??" Bernard tears it up on the cowbell. One of my favorite songs and rock vids ever. Also: frog solo.
New Order show me that Classic Rock/Punk/Heavy Metal aren't the only good, true music genres. I mean, i used to be that kid that used to trash any kind of pop or electronic music with keyboard or synthesizer. When my Joy Division era ended, i decided to give it a shot and listen to New Order and it just blew my mind. I was being naive and stupid, every style of music can be good, provided it is sincere. Like that Rush lyric: "All this machinery making modern music, Can still be open-hearted. Not so coldly chartered, it's really just a question Of your honesty". I love this band because the transition was so legit, i mean, from Joy Division to New Order, making so different kinds of music, but so fucking deep, sincere and good. They are a example of a successful band and good musicians for me.
When you think about it, all too often people are stuck with being 'formalist', when it comes to regarding creative arts like music, in a holistic and genuine way. One of the most elementary first-steps is truly appreciating the form of music. Only after that can one get beyond (ie unattached from) pre-occupation with the form, and on to involvement with the content/meaning/human-ness. This is one of the most beautiful (and in my opinion, quite uncommon) things New Order did at the beginning of their existence. I think it's a natural process; so you weren't stupid at any point, felipe.
+felipemaiden13 That's very true what you said. All music can be good. In the old days when we would say disco sucks, for example, while we were cranking our Pink Floyd or Zeppelin we were being nothing more than snobs if not worse and completely missing the point.
@@brucewayne1894 I’d say yes the album version is bad, the pacing is horrible and it ends to soon. But the original 12” is superior to this mv imo, it sounds more powerful, has more emotion. Btw with the original 12” I don’t mean the substance version, bc the original 12” is about a minute longer than substance edit.
Hands down, one of the best songs of the decade! Were they amazing during these years or what! The ending of the video with "Ian Curtis" watching them and liking what he´s hearing is just the cherry on the Sundae for all us old Joy Division fans.
This song and this video are, in my opinion, a classic example of the fact that, in music and in art all, when you are technically very well prepared and you had in your life strong emotions that you want to convey and share with other people, then you will certainly produce a masterpiece. This may seem a trivial concept, but what matters to me is that New Order managed to transmit those strong emotions to me.
I remember seeing this video for the first time. It was so cool to see a pure and raw video of very talented musicians putting together a song live on camera and it's over 10 minutes!!! Was always so impressed the band, that they became... and still are ....my favorite band ever!
@@dannylgriffin No doubt they did do a LOT of rehearsing prior to filming this video, however, it WAS actually filmed in one take and is pretty much a raw recording of the song.
Back in 1985 this video was doing the rounds in cinemas. I heard this version of the Perfect Kiss for the first time live in Wolverhampton (Low Life Tour) and managed to grab the drumstick that Barney used after they left the stage. Another was more bold and jumped onto the stage and grabbed the song list from Gillian's keyboard. New Order are the soundtrack to my life over a 40 year period - I generally remember when something happened by remembering what single or album they had released.
Never figured out why he tries to sing at the very top of his range, and beyond. But its iconic! Its great how uncomfortable everyone looks too. And her makeup is on point!
I have decided this is my favorite music video of all time. It's often spoken about how intense and "real" it is being a live performance, but it is so true. It's not too long either, over ten minutes for any other music video would considered too long, but, no, not this. Not to mention, THAT BRIDGE....Wow!! Brilliant.
Funny, but I hope you know he's actually the drummer usually... If you didn't know, watch this live vid where he goes insane: ruclips.net/video/0VcGJZpfl1c/видео.html
My favorite video. The first time I saw it I imagine that the guy that appears in the back at 7:50 was Ian Curtis's spirit. And in the end, when they look each other without saying a word is spectacular.
Fucking hell! Is this really THIRTY YEARS AGO?! It still sounds fresh as a daisy. And utterly pioneering. And cowbells! When was the last time you saw a group use cowbells? (Hello, LCD Soundsystem if you are watching!)
For me the three cornerstones of their singles discography are Blue Monday, True Faith and Perfect Kiss. The first two tracks were the band's biggest hits, and they must have been stunned when this masterpiece didn't even make the Top 40. It's subsequently ranked highly in every New Order Best Song poll done by the music press
I saw this video on VHS in my early 20's. I rode my bike to another neighboring city and rented the VHS 'Substance' and was in a trance watching the simplicty of this video. Nothing special about it other than musicians practicing this song in a live studio. But it's the simplicity of it that makes it so special.

Gillian is so underappreciated. Not only is she uber-hot, she's a great keyboarder and guitar player. And... yeah... she's just f-ing gorgeous.
I agree.
And she has a heavenly voice. A pitty NO never Used this Gillian skill
A great gifted musician indeed! She has stunning looks back 80/90's, but now she totally looks like somebody's single auntie, LOL.
@@anapaulacarneiro4175 Totally agree. I read Stephen's book recently and he says that Barney and Hooky didn't want a female voice in any New Order song :/ She still makes some vocals for Procession, Confusion and Doubts Even Here.

This is one of my favorite videos. Just the lack of trying to be something and just being what they are - just playing their music - is priceless.
@You Tube viewer No u r
Talent never dies
And on top of that all, they wrote some damn fine tunes!
Just want 2 appreciate ur opinion the several skills of the JD members. I Luv this Band too.
@You Tube viewer That's a bit strong governor!
My favourite song ever. It's the future that never happened, it's the sound of falling in love and the sound of empires falling. It's fucking fantastic.

Peter Hook: one of the greatest bass players ever, yet plays bass like a rhythm guitarist. 👍
I wouldn't say like this. After all, he's not playing chords, but basslines. Anyway, his style was nevertheless unique.
stefanofocacci perhaps I’m a little ignorant with the terminology when it comes to guitar playing in general because I’ve only played for a few years myself. Maybe it would be better to point out, from my limited understanding, that bass lines and bassists sound as if they’re in the background but with Peter Hook in New Order, it feels like the opposite where his playing and bass lines are brought to the foreground. Maybe that makes more sense. 😊
@@vytalman he uses the bass as a lead instrument
@@stefanofocacci he does play chords a lot. not in this song but a lot of his most famous basslines are him playing chords (or triads more often). he plays it like a lead instrument more than a rhythm instrument.
exactly!
I never realized how good the bassist is.
You will hear/read many times in songs with high note bass lines being described as “New Order-ey bass”. That’s pretty much Peter Hook’s sound.
He's one of the best, lots have mimicked him.
Pete Hook. Amazing bass player.

Considering that bass line hook, his last name is fitting.
5 years ago when I was 15 I watched this music video and was extremely inspired by hooky’s bass playing and immediately started learning myself. Today I saw him play live and even met the bloke. He will forever be my favourite musician and paved what music means to me forever. Thank you Peter ❤
I met him when he came to Atlanta. Love his bass lines. I was also once a bass player
He inspired me to play the bass as well. I bought one, but I had to sell in to by an AC unit almost 30 years ago. I saw him live three times live and was able to shake his hand in 2016 when he played in San Francisco. I will never forget it.

I'm glad Gillian is back with New Order. Her distinctive style on the synths was just as important to the band's classic sound as Hooky's bass was.
Probably one of the greatest music videos ever because of its intimate insight into the band. There's no hiding place.
Shot selection is amazing
New Order deserved a Stop Making Sense-esque treatment by Jonathan Demme. maybe even a movie. I mean, this right here feels like the intro to a hypothetical movie about them. also I wish Demme could've filmed Stephen going at it on his drum set like he wanted.
What is the intimate insight that you get from watching this? I don't think there is any.
The video has some intimacy in the sense that it is simply a band recording the master version of a song, but there isn't any "intimate insight" here.
Can you provide a single "intimate insight" that you get from watching this video?

I have listened to and loved this song since it's release back in the day. I cried, actual tears, as I read the lyrics (for the first time) while watching the video today. I felt like this was such an 'homage' to JD and Ian Curtis with the talents of New Order that did not imitate JD. This group has been an influential part of my life as well as helping to define the era I was lucky to experience. BTW, I just saw them for the first time on November 18, 2023, at the Darker Waves Fest in Huntington Beach, CA the same day as my wife's 65th birthday, a thrill I will not forget!
HERE ARE THE LYRICS :)
I stood there beside myself,
Thinking hard about the weather
Then came by a friend of mine
Suggested we go out together
Then I knew it from the start:
This friend of mine would fall apart
Pretending not to see his gun,
I said "let's go out and have some fun"
I know, you know, you believe in a land of love
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
I have always thought about
Staying here and going out
Tonight I should have stayed at home,
Playing with my pleasure zone
He has always been so strange,
I'd often thought he was deranged
Pretending not to see his gun,
I said "let's go out and have some fun"
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
When you are alone at night
You search yourself for all the things
That you believe are right
If you give it all away
You throw away your only chance to be here today
Then a fight breaks out on your street
You lose another broken heart in a land of meat
My friend, he took his final breath
Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death
I just now realized how deep these lyrics are
Thanks

+felipemaiden13 I'd never really paid attention to that lyric or given it much thought before. It's great.
+felipemaiden13 Well said.
+felipemaiden13 As a hardcore Rush fan, something tells me we'd get along just fine.

Better than the Version on low-life or better than the original 12”?
@@riskydigitsta1794 Better than both.
