It's strange how much comfort I took out of this song as a kid, in 1987, as I struggled through school with a learning disability that not one could identify, now known as Nonverbal Learning Disorder, and it's not something you "grow out of", it follows you into adulthood and destroys your chances at holding down simple jobs and slowly drains the life out of you and your will to keep trying, and you live in fear EVERYDAY, wondering when the shoe's going to drop next! This song was so peaceful to me as a 9 y.o., but as an adult, who understands the lyrics, it was actually, ominously prophetic.

From the tragedy of Ian's suicide, and the ashes, these guys struggled on to become the best band in the world. Frought with divisive relationships and monumental public squabbles, they somehow soldier on. Even when Hooky plays hooky and Barney cops an effete pose of indifference, and the whole ensemble seems mired in a casual and fragmenting stripe of ennui, they always crawl back on stage. I know they're tired and bored and "fucking over it", but they always manage to pull it back together. Thank god for that. I dont know what my worldview would be like without their music, but it wouldnt be anywhere near as kaleidoscopic and wonderful.
Amazing tune! I am an old 'Punk Rocker ' and have been into Joy Division since 1978, then right through to New Order (and the spin off projects ;The Other Two, Electronic, Bad Lieutenant, Revenge, Monaco etc saw some of em live!) I am a massive fan of Bernard and Hooky, but it is clear to see here that, there is a massive 'personality clash' with these two old friends! Hooky is too big a personality to just sit in the background as the 'COOL BASS PLAYER' He want's to be the frontman from time to time , this in my opinion is why the original line up split! PS Hooky is not the greatest vocalist around ever , but he was there in the original band , why should he just be a 'wallflower ' and not have any of the limelight of the incredible legacy of these two bands! dx
Fun fact: The line “Now that we’ve grown up together, they’re all taking drugs with me” was the original lyric. Producer, Stephen Hague felt the lyric needed to be changed to “They’re afraid of what they see,” on the recording in order to avoid trouble with radio air play. This was in the mid 80s when radio could make or break a single.

This is what pop music should be - sugar sweet melody and hip swinging groove coupled with a subversive and dark theme - literally whole bands and genres emerge from different strands of New Orders DNA - how Bernard Sumner isn't as lauded as a Marr or Gallagher is beyond on me - but maybe its better like that - I love that this rush of a song - this ultimate MDMA anthem is performed by a bunch of dour Mancunians - the north west of England is without doubt the most fertile musical hot house in the WORLD.

Lyrics 🎶
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again, I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
And the value of destiny comes to nothing
I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there was just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

What an incredible song. Easily one of my favourites.
A great, great song.
VIDA ETERNA A NEW ORDER!!!
Peter Hook plays those 4 strings like "lead guitar". From Motown.
His band is tight too.. great show in Atlanta..
Great Live Performance - Classic Band - Classic Song 🎵
Agradecer a Deus por ter vivido nesta época, sentar e chorar de saudade!

@@judithkreische8957 chorar de saudade de como foi bom esse tempo!Pq a música é perfeita.
This song is burned into my brain as it's in that snuff flik, one lunatic-one ice pick.
Such a shame we'll never see the original, and true, lineup perform live together again. Arguably the most influential band of all time, certainly when viewed through the context of electronic music dominating the modern music scene.
Nahhhh, Depeche Mode have that title.
New Order + Joy Division curb stomps DM.Plus no prancing on stage.
well never say Never. I am holding out hope Hooky will be back.
@@piscesempress1978 No chance. And having seen PH&TL last week, I can't see why he'd want to.....

Totally totally British I love this band and what they represent .
Am from argentina and i fell they represent me to .
I wouldn't say "totally totally". In fact, I'm sure there are people out there who think New Order is American.
@@alukuhito and they would be wrong there british
@@dazdavison1 *They're. Yes, they would be wrong, but I'm just saying that there are probably people out there that don't think they're British, despite you saying how they're "totally totally" British. To you, maybe. To others, maybe not.
