During the pandemic lockdown I found an old box of cassettes by the side of the road with a FREE sign on it. In there was a recording from a Montreal radio station circa 1990 and this song was on it and it saved me. Thank you to whoever put that box out there. You changed my life ❤
I was 12 years old and living in Brazil when I first heard this song on our local FM station. I was immediately taken by it and ran to the record store to buy the record. How an English rock band can write a song that touches the soul of a Brazilian teenager 7 thousand miles away speaks volume about New Order. One of the greatest rock bands ever. Transcendent.
É difícil ver brasileiros comentando, não peguei essa época, basicamente vim pelo comercial de The Last Of Us parte 2 aonde a protagonista canta um cover muito lindo dessa música, mas eu sinto que nasci na roça errada em alguns aspectos pois as músicas de hoje em dia principalmente no Brasil estão perdidas.
There honestly is something otherworldly and magical about this particular track. I first heard it on the radio in 1987, and it seemed that time itself had come to a halt, and I asked "what is this?" And then a week or so later I saw the video on MTV and knew that it was for me. I bought the cassette and have loved NO ever since. Joy Division too, of course.
35 years later, this video is still as mesmerizing as it was back then. Kudos to everyone involved, and of course to New Order for composing such a brilliant song.
Fun fact: the man who directed this video only directed one other music video in his career...SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY by the Fine Young Cannibals. If you watch them back-to-back, you can tell by their style that they're by the same director!
Takes me right back to Summer of 1987 - first motorbike, first wheelie, first crash, first proper girlfriend, first broken heart, first beers, first hangover - great summer, love to do it all again. Never a second chance to do it first time round.
I agree 80’s is dope. Personally I say early 2000’s, rock was still a relevant category, alternative was killing it, hip hop began taking over the music sphere, pop music was still enjoyable and edm began its rise.
@@TommyTest147 You took the words right out of my mouth, I don't know what the heck they put in the water but it seems like the world started to go downhill real fast after 2008 or so in ALL areas, pop music, TV sitcoms, movies, the economy, politics, women's rights, democratic governance, hate crimes, YOU NAME IT.

This song! In 87 one evening before bed, my mom told me we were going to the zoo, I was 7. Next thing I knew we're on a plane to Belgium, my parents were getting divorced and us kids were yanked out of the US on a lie. MTV Europe didn't exist yet and the only music show here was Top of the Pops on BBC. Within the first minute of hearing this song, for some reason I UNDERSTOOD it (I know now at 44 that I have Anxiety disorder, ADD and autism) it just clicked, I also loved the absurditiy of the video, I still do now. This song will always take me back to the first time I felt safe after the big lie and the even bigger move across the globe. Thank you New Order ❤
I’ll give a fun story. I’m 50 and took my 18 year old son to see them back in March. About half the audience was my age and grew up with New Order. The other half of the audience was in their 20s. All of these songs came out long before they were born. Us old folks sat down but the crowd in their 20s. Stood up and danced for the whole concert. It was amazing. I wanted to tell all of the 20 somethings that they don’t need to ever wonder what it was I like back in the 80s because their energy that night was like a time machine. For that 90 minutes we all were there. If you can feel the music. Then you’re there too. ❤
@KennyBlanknshipp Oh of course! Joy divison is also one of my favorites. Ians death was tragic but they left behind bangers. I am seeing new order play this week :)
@@leestewart3659 Ah! Thats wonderful! I'm glad you felt a strong sense of euphoria in that 90 minutes. I too felt euphoria! I saw them last week and it was actually magical. Everybody was singing and dancing and it was overall one of the best experiences of my life. Although I never lived as a teen in the 80s (obvi), I felt like it in that moment, just dancing, everybody's energy was beautiful. Meaningful music brings people together. 💞
@@DwayndibbVids Actually they were both a bit of ... Cut & Paste ... if we are being honest. New Order only had a few decent songs ... this is their best.
It's music like this that makes you remember another life that you never actually lived but you feel it inside just as strongly as if you had! That's why it's so freaking amazing!
Been obsessed with 80s music my whole life (I’m 21.) my dad happened to show me this song to add to the collection and I have to say, I’ve had this on repeat for the past 2 weeks because of him. Thanks dad ❤️
As a kid I listend to this. As a teenager I devoured it. As a uni student I lived by it. As a middle aged man with a small child, I am looking forward to sharing this with her too so she can journey through life with it as well.
I love this song. I dedicated it to my mate Andy, when he lost his life in a freak motorcycle accident. That was many years ago now, but I still see him, when I hear this.
I'm obsessed with this song, it's my #1 on Spotify Wrapped, I'm in the top 0.001% of listeners in the world and I've played it 239 times since March 15th. I still can't get enough of l!😂
What's amazing is how far mtv has sold out since then. Instead of music videos, they push progressive authoritarianism and soul crushing reality shows that pimp greed.
+theedrstrangelove Yes, I remember it like it was yesterday yet it was so long ago. I remember that in the Plaza Pasadena Mall in Pasadena (CA) at The Broadway they had a TV in the men's department and played Music Videos and this one they played a lot when it came out. I guess the store was trying to appeal to the young hip new wave crowd like me by playing this video. Great video.
I was in a wedding band back in 1987, and I loved this song so much I made the band rehearse and play it at weddings. Not one person came up to me to show appreciation of it.
I heard this from my Dad since I was a child and now I kept coming back to their songs. Gives me so much nostalgia even I am not from their unforgettable era
I’m 30 years old. My dad is my main influence in most everything. His taste molded mine and I found my own way here. I just found out he has cancer and I’m binging music that reminds me of him on some good headphones. It’s cathartic. I’m glad synthy music is coming back. It helps me ride feelings a lot. Anyway.
One of my favorite songs from New Order. 1987 was the year, I was 12, no smart phones yet. how prophetic is the character with the screen in his face?!?
+Geoff Green Funny you say that. I can barely go to any show, hear a song I like and not sing along to it. Then I have no memory of the performance at all. Fuck me. Same with every Depeche Mode show.
Imagine how much great music over the last 3 decades would never have even been created if joy division and new Order never existed to inspire a generation. Iconic. 💯
Fk yeah what a choon! I moved to the US 24 years ago and today my now 19-year old had this song stuck in her head like a worm. She wasn't even a thought when this was out. So happy my kids love the good stuff!!!
Telephone cord. In days gone by, every kid knew exactly how far the telephone cord could reach. That’s why so many mothers became expert shoe throwers.
Absolutely love this band, and am so glad that the spirit of Joy Division kept going. Every time I hear this particular song I keep thinking about A Discovery of Witches. 80s forever vibing.
This song has great melody but lyrics are depressing like Joy division... I also thought that this Day would never come when my childhood would be replaced by fear
The 1980's music video scene was such a vibe that the avant garde art style gave us such surreal aspects as this as well as Patrick Nagel, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. I'm glad I got to see this music video when it first came out on MTV back 1987.
Just think this song is 37 years old and still beats most songs released today. That's equivalent of the Tennessee Waltz released in 1950 by Patti Page doing well in 1987.
I deeply love this song. My parents used to listen to New Order when I was a kid, I didn't know any English back then but this one was my favorite. And when I grew up, I discovered the lyrics and I love it even more. True faith. True talent. ❤️
All the 1980's were special filled with great music. Although i was born in the middle 50's and was experienced in so much classic music that i can say I appreciate all good music. I tend to go for the 60's and 70's Just my opinion, thanks GOD Bless
Personally I think most 60s music is too simple, with a few notable exceptions such as mid Beatles, 70s great, 80s the best but most people like the music they grew up to most
Wrong. The 80's everythinged. Thats what was so great about that era, every type of music was exploding, all at once. Metallica and Skinny Puppy at the same time, and those are just two examples.
The song helps me to get over depression!! In Israel with the war!! Sending love and compassion!! To all of you The best song ever ( the day will come) 🧢🙏💥❤️
'The value of destiny comes to nothing' This line always makes me think of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, only there's no real road. There's no path, no map, nothing is important except every step as we take it. We stay in the past or get held hostage by the idea of the future, thinking of what we were or should be. As someone who feels doomed by the possibility of a future that does not suit me, this line is a comforting reminder that the concept of 'destiny' is not unshakeable. If you spend your life thinking the day will never come, you might be missing the day as it happens because your gaze is too far ahead. If you try to get back to the childhood you lost, you'll just let time fly past you and you'll lose that too. Carpe Diem, and may you listen to more music that sounds this good while also playing with the morbid concept of being caught under the influence of time.

Why are all the comments praising the song and ignoring the video. I love the song, but this was also one of my favourite videos ever. It is still amazing to watch today.
I personally feel the music that came out of the UK in the 80's was arguably better overall than what came out of the US. That's not to say the US didn't produce their fair share of great music, but the Brits took it to another level the Yanks couldn't quite reach.
Well MrSupersonic84, bands like New Order and Depeche Mode did a lot of damage control for the British music, after all there were 3 guys poisoning us (Stock Aitken and Waterman) ;)
One of those songs where if you don't have the context then the lyrics are just a random bunch of words... but get the subject matter, and suddenly it all makes sense and you realise how clever the lyrics actually are. I've listened to this song for years but found out just then it's about drug addiction. Suddenly I'm seeing the song in a new light.

It's not rock at all but I feel you
É difícil ver brasileiros comentando, não peguei essa época, basicamente vim pelo comercial de The Last Of Us parte 2 aonde a protagonista canta um cover muito lindo dessa música, mas eu sinto que nasci na roça errada em alguns aspectos pois as músicas de hoje em dia principalmente no Brasil estão perdidas.
Mas o cover apresentado no the last of us 2 é 1000x melhor
There honestly is something otherworldly and magical about this particular track. I first heard it on the radio in 1987, and it seemed that time itself had come to a halt, and I asked "what is this?" And then a week or so later I saw the video on MTV and knew that it was for me. I bought the cassette and have loved NO ever since. Joy Division too, of course.

This song! In 87 one evening before bed, my mom told me we were going to the zoo, I was 7. Next thing I knew we're on a plane to Belgium, my parents were getting divorced and us kids were yanked out of the US on a lie. New Order is such a euphoric band, they know what they're doing. I'm 13 and even I love them, that's how timeless they are!
There are lots of bands from the 80s, that transcend generations. Keep looking for them, you won't be disappointed.

'The value of destiny comes to nothing'
This line always makes me think of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, only there's no real road.
Tomorrow is promised to no one
Lyrics☺
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
And the value of destiny comes to nothing
I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there was just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
