First heard this tune smoking hash in 1985, home on leave from the military. To this day, I cannot get this song out of my head. It is so haunting, poignant, spot on, simple yet so complex, that I have yet to hear a song better. I remember the precise place (parking lot of a movie theater) in a 1973 Monte Carlo in Myrtle Beach, SC. My buddy Danny popped in a cassette tape and blew my mind for decades to come.
Not only does this sound absolutely fantastic, but Johnny's voice seems to just keep getting better and better, it's truly amazing to hear how much he has grown into owning this song with his own vocal stylings.

My daughters boyfriend had to use my car for a few days and found The Smiths on the CD player. Yeah my car is 20 years old. And he said good choice of music. So my 20 year old Volvo plays 40 years old music and my 30 year old son in law loves it. Carry on Johnny Marr you fucking legend.
I actually didn't think it was possible to recreate the sounds live and gave up on hearing a decent live version of this song, but this is really good. This is the best live version of this song ever performed .
Bassist and Drummer deserve kudos here for laying down a fat groove that makes this even more special, and I think many here don't even realize it's why it sounds so good!.

Without Andy & Mike the musical Chemistry would literally be different. Sure this is tight & clean performance, though the Original Members performing together is where the real Magick happened. Notice that's past tense. It's good, not enough to discredit the other members who also contributed substantially to achieve what they had together. Johnny me er woulda made it as a solo act before first establishing himself with the Smiths & Visa Versa for Morrissey. All of the ingredients are equally important to the whole.
I remember when this track dropped in 1984-85. I had been working in record stores in Boston and Providence, RI. It was The Smiths, yet not The Smiths. The same lovelorn, mournful plaint, but with an edgy, neo-psychedelic tremolo and echo. It seemed to be the perfect synthesis of two very different sensibilities: Marr's and Morrissey's. And here it is 36 years later and it sounds better than ever. Johnny Marr is a miracle of nature.

This song never gets old. Johnny’s voice may not have the extension of Morrisey but it’s definitely not lacking in expression here. And as always his guitar does a lot of the speaking.
As someone who loves Metal, rock and loads of other stuff, this song has one of my favourite guitar sounds in anything I've ever heard, absolutely fantastic!!
As a former musician and part time home recording mixer/music producer I have to admit this was one hell of a live mix and a FANTASTIC performance! Timing and tones from the vocals and instruments were impeccable!!

I had no idea that Johnny Marr could as well sing. He honors the electric guitar, how can I put it? He plays it with the subtlety of a cello player, every ostinato, every chord, every rhythm in place for a particular musical reason. A great musician.
That’s a fantastic description. I’ll freely admit I play guitar the way I do because I idolized Edward Van Halen. Johnny’s minimalist approach is just beautiful sounding.

However, once I lost my “shallowness” I started to listening to Andy Summers (The Police), Paul Reynolds (Flock of Seagulls) and this guy, Marr and noticed those guys play for color/texture “chords” and not speed. That’s the route I took.

Johnny's guitar playing is absolute magic and so hard to copy. I was impressed with the vocals on this recording - even some vibrato in there. Love it.

Perhaps the most iconic song of the 80s IMO. When I hear this tune, it puts me in an apartment somewhere in the city after a night out clubbing and I'm either getting high or taking off someone's clothes (Probably a women with big hair) and getting lucky.
The guys who designed the tremolo units in the Fender amp never imagined it would be employed to produce such a dark, imposing sound as in this song. What a fantastic version
I saw an interview with the producer who said a jazz chorus might also have been used in a take but the four twins is common knowledge. It can be replicated with a plug in in a DAW but like a lot of pre digital recordings it doesn’t quite have that mojo. Or Marrjo.
@@dav2593 while the original was recorded dry the track was indeed then then sent into 4 Fender Twins using each amps tremolo after recording. It's well documented they had to keep resynching the tremolo speeds because they could never get through the entire song without them going out of sync

Johnny's guitar playing is absolute magic and so hard to copy. I was impressed with the vocals on this recording - even some vibrato in there. Love it.
What's amazing is... he doesn't have to show off like a circus performer... no tapping, dive-bomb whammy bar, arpeggio...... I love Love LOVE this song the very first time I listened to it when it was released several decades ago!

Perhaps the most iconic song of the 80s IMO. When I hear this tune, it puts me in an apartment somewhere in the city after a night out clubbing and I'm either getting high or taking off someone's clothes (Probably a women with big hair) and getting lucky.
The guys who designed the tremolo units in the Fender amp never imagined it would be employed to produce such a dark, imposing sound as in this song. What a fantastic version
I guarantee that’s not the amps tremolo, the original also was done after recording.
@@dav2593 four fender twin reverbs were used for the tremolo effect on the original record.
I saw an interview with the producer who said a jazz chorus might also have been used in a take but the four twins is common knowledge. It can be replicated with a plug in in a DAW but like a lot of pre digital recordings it doesn’t quite have that mojo. Or Marrjo.
When done with a pedal or digital I mean. I like Moz’s current version but prefer Marrs. Seen them both live.
@@dav2593 while the original was recorded dry the track was indeed then then sent into 4 Fender Twins using each amps tremolo after recording. It's well documented they had to keep resynching the tremolo speeds because they could never get through the entire song without them going out of sync
