Wrong. Movement was meant to be a masterpiece but the recording was an absolute disaster. Listen to the Peel sessions of the same songs and you will understand how the songs we're meant to sound.
I love to hear that 80's rusty New Order sound finding its own way pos Joy Division. They have created such a unique style. Thanks for the Friday morning gift.
Joy Division / New Order were such an interesting band. They were such basic musicians and none of them could really sing that well, yet somehow their music is mesmerising. One of the greatest bands of all time.
it’s so cool to hear the influence that joy division’s sound had on new order’s early music, but it’s hard to not imagine what it would’ve sounded like with ian in the mix. you can visibly see the pain or sense of loss on everyone’s faces still. the first few performances for them, especially in america, where they should’ve been with ian all along, must’ve been rough. but like this song says… dreams never end.
I’ve long found this song a very fitting and appropriate beginning to not just an album, but to an entirely new era of the band’s history-a metamorphosis, if you will. What’s more, it’s also a not so thinly veiled tribute to their fallen friend and bandmate, Ian Curtis. A true statement of perseverance if ever there was one…
And not angry. It really bothers me that Hooky, who's my favorite musician, will probably never come back to New Order. I think if Rob Gretton hadn't died in the late 90's he could have pricked some egos and helped straighten things out. If not as their manager, at least the guy that believed in Joy Division and gave them a chance.
A gem. I still think this is probably the best song they ever did. The way it begins slowly and transitions...the guitars and bass fusing into a distinct voice...growing more and more furious-still gets me. Intro, main body, crescendo...I've listened to this repeatedly and never tired of it.
I was trying to express what you explained very well. The song changes from having a more Joy Division discordance to a smoother flowing drive. Amazing
Just effing amazing this! This was the first video (BetaMax actually) of live performance i ever saw of NEwOrder. Was 1982 or early 1983. It blew me away. Fan now 40 yrs.

Barney gave Gillian almost threatening, stern look, every time she hit a bum note or miss something. It must have been hard for her to get through the early phase of New Order.
The intro is very Joy Division then it transitions into a Cure style pop song. But you can tell by the end of the song there is a lot of pain and this is not the direction the band wants to go. We are fortunate the band had a lot of introspection and was willing to try new concepts.
The drums are the jugular lifeline here.. does any one else hear this ? 3:17 .. the lead singer was not a performer.:: but the reins handed to him when IC committed suicide.: still it seems the drummer is holding to his this together
At 46 seconds this song goes from sounding more like Joy Division (reminiscent of Shes lost control) and in to the New Order sound. Also sounds like the Cure borrowed this for in between days.
It's funny that as time marches on, many bands whose music bore no resemblance to one another at the time, in retrospect seem to share very similar techniques. It's the nature of proximity in time, and the fact that of course everyone (bands) was listening to each other, borrowing and stealing, and co-inspiring. Few years back, I noticed how similar some of the rhythmic mannerisms of DEVO and Talking Heads sounded curiously alike. At the same time, their whole musical programs couldn't have been more different.
@@herchelleonwood7463Peter sings lead quite a few times live from 1980-81 before they settled on Bernard for vox. As for recordings, Hook sings lead on Joy Divisions “Interzone”, Dreams Never End, and Doubts Even Here (the latter also being on movement).
Movement is one of my favourite albums of the era. Apart from what I consider to be one annoying filler (ICB), the songs are original, melancholic and curiously catchy. As a side note, Peter's voice got better over time. 😜

'Movement' is criminally underrated. I love the dual guitar interplay between Bernard and Gillian in this era.
Joy Division / New Order were such an interesting band. They were such basic musicians and none of them could really sing that well, yet somehow their music is mesmerising. One of the greatest bands of all time.
Hook is considered a very good bassist who created some iconic bass lines and Morris is like a human drum machine.
