If you are going to do the bulk of the work yourself, the trick is to restore parts as you remove them rather than just pulling the whole vehicle apart. That way when it comes time to rebuild her you have shelves full of restored and new parts ready to go straight back on. It is far, far less daunting this way than to stand there looking at a shed full of old parts that need a ton of work. Sending the body and chassis off to get restored is then the last step and you can start to reassemble her as soon as they come back.
That’s a great tip. My mate and I were looking at it the other day and really had no idea how to start and we kinda wanted a plan coming into it rather than just tear it apart and get a bit lost. Appreciate the comment 👍🏼
@@OverlandTravellers It also means, should your plans change for some reason, you can put all the restored, rebuilt and new parts back on and are still well ahead of where you started. Good luck with it all.
Excellent decision and attitude. The process is the best part, meeting and chatting with fellow 40 enthusiasts. Two years is quick so if it goes to 4 years or more just except it and enjoy. Before you start you'll need Space, Money, Time and an understanding partner, I think you tick all the boxes. I learnt to weld and paint my LC GTR and the results you can achieve are very rewarding. You'll need two sheds that size and a room in the house to store all the restored parts. Marty from Perth
Most definitely the right choice to keep Elsie, as well as the content you will be able to create, she will be an awsome investment that will definitely pay overs when the time actually comes. Tractor mode is the boss
I am happy to know that you're not going to sell Elsie and you're going to give her a new life. I know nothing about car so whatever you saying sounds like alien language to me hahaha. I admire all those people who build their cars, vans, caravans, etc. It's a very good skill and creative. ❤
Sell it and use the money to do more trips. Pan-American highway, cape to Chiro or Mongolia to London in the 70 series. Or if you’ve got the $$’s deck it out for those trips
Sounds awesome, keen to see the progress, I would love to tackle something like this one day. By the time i have time it will probably be the 76 😂😂😂🤦♂️.
keep it.... you will alaways kick asel for selling it..... the memories.... the history.... or sell it... to me :).... id sell my 79 to own a car like this.... something to take me to retirement that i can actually work on........ keep it if u can afford to.... it is a gem that doesnt come often.
I think based on some of the outcomes you're hoping to get to you need to find yourself a HJ62 I think is what you want, with the engine, gearbox, axles etc. that you want from it. Get all of those parts serviced and cleaned up ready to go into Elsie before you actually tear into her,, you can sell the chassis and body etc. anything else from the 60 that you don't need to use, to recoup some of your costs. By the sounds of it there will be some things particularly on the chassis that you might be able to tackle yourself in terms of rustproofing and even welding in engine mount brackets / cross member brackets etc. If there is rust repair to do on the panels themselves, maybe you need to seek out a panel shop that are willing to work with you in terms of some cheap publicity / let you be their work experience kid while they work on your panels. I agree with your logic in getting that body work part of the process done mostly by someone else, it's incredibly time consuming to get a good result as you already know from your experience painting Elsie the first time. The other thought would be (you mentioned Paul from Mr Landcruiser), ask him how they'd tackle it, it sounds like you'll be reaching out to him at some point in this resto anyway for parts or advice or both so why not engage him from the start to get that wisdom. Do they make parabolic springs for the 40 series? Because if they do that would make a huge difference to the ride etc. of it since you want to keep it leaf sprung.
Yes that would be great to find a 60 for parts, I would just want to find one thats beyond repair because I would feel bad to tear apart a good one! I think for body work I will have a go at the easy parts and the more technical and precise areas I will get help or outsource. Yes ill be getting onto paul for all those hard to find bits and even some tips off him. And yes Terrain Tamer now make parabolic leaves which would be really interesting to try out.
Sell it and let someone else make a project of it. Emotionally you have an attachment to it but it will be a very deep money pit. Keep your money for your travels.
Given you guys actually drive long distance often, unlike most 12ht owners.. I wouldn't throw money at 12ht .. its a romantic notion in my way of thinking. 1hz and five speed with slightly adjusted taller gearing will give you beautiful cruising speed and decent economy .. so long as Elsie isn't "too" heavy for FAR less money .. My vx 100 1HDFTE is awesome , stock , 1130klms from 130ltrs travelling light .. My 80 series 1hz non turbo gets 1200 plus sitting on 100 , solo travelling light but easily sufficient.. Is the VX Value for money ? mmm no !!! If anyone can create a wonderful & comprehensive 40's rebuild series , its Holly and Matt. Hare and forbes etc would hopefully invest in your efforts, go on call them.😉
There would be a few longer trips once its done but mostly short I'd say. I am not opposed to the idea of a 1HZ, more modern, easier to get parts and quite similar power output to a 12HT. Plan will be a very light weight setup in Elsie once done, I think a bed in the back with some simple draws.
Yeah we just felt like we weren’t giving people on there any value, taking their money for nothing kind of thing so we stopped it. If we were really giving them lots of extras that would be good but we don’t have a the time the Patreons deserve 👍🏼
If you watch the video you will see we have. The question is asked in the title so people are compelled to click on it to see the answer. Welcome to RUclips 🫡
Great to hear your going to give Elsie a new life! Give me a shout and I'll come over and have a play and share some tips and tricks.

Absolutely love these restoration videos. Can't wait to see the rebirth of Elsie 2.0!! Exciting

Awesome car! Great to hear it’s not going anywhere. Good luck with it all 🤙
I'm glad you're keeping Elsie! Can't wait to see how it all goes. Good Luck!
I have an 80 series chassis, makes the ride awesome, I also have a engineered extended 80 as well with 1 HDT in parts with lockers.
Would you sell it?
Matt thanks for the video 👍👍

Looking forward to the build series.
So glad you keeping it Matt, to be honest all the new stuff has no interest to some of us
Very happy to see you are not! selling Elsie 👍🎉

If you have somewhere to store her keep her I still have my first car 40 +years

I don't think we would get much for it considering the condition its in

Haha collectors item 76!

Hello Mates 😊 Don't Sell , its like selling your first child 😢 Greetings and Cheers 🍻 From South Africa 🇿🇦
You’ve made the best choice in my opinion. An excellent project building an excellent icon. 👍🍺
Thank you! Cheers!
If you need the money? yes
If not and you have somewhere to put it? No
I’ve regretted selling every Landcruiser I’ve owned…
Ive heard similar sentiments from a lot of people!
Have Fun
Keep her and redone her the HJ45 is a beast
Chuck a turbo 1kz in it with aome hikux running gear on it!
I havent seen that done before. I think it would be interesting in a short wheel base

You can’t start up drive touch smell and feel your photos. Keeping it will take you back the way no memory can.
Don't sell it!
👍🏻👍🏻
had me terrified with the title, keen to see how she turn out!
Cheers mate!

Keep in mind doing videos is worth something for us. We’re aware of how much this stuff costs so we have factored it in.
Keep her!!!

That’s awesome mate good to hear the new 4wd’s don’t interest us all
Glad you will enjoy it mate :)
@@OverlandTravellers it’ll give me inspiration when my 2005 GU TD42 hits 40 years of age to tear her down and restore her
What happened to the patreon guys? Logged in a month or so ago to see that it’s disappeared
Yeah we just felt like we weren’t giving people on there any value, taking their money for nothing kind of thing so we stopped it. If we were really giving them lots of extras that would be good but we don’t have a the time the Patreons deserve 👍🏼

I’ll start watching your Channel again if the old girl comes back 😂
I dare say if you watch our latest Pilbara travel episode you might enjoy it. The bucket of bolts is just different
Keep it for price value, Sell it to someone who Values it more than you want to keep it.
For the condition it’s in we wouldn’t get much for it. I don’t think many people would pay more than we want to keep it.
Sell it! Consider your next purchase carefully.
Not sure if you know but we do have a brand new one as well.
Sell and get 300 series or the new prado
I would rather keep it and get a new 300/prado.... Then you'd have the best of both worlds
It'll be like selling one of your kids 😢
Cant be done!
Don’t sell it!!!!
Your walking down a money pit . restoring old cars/trucks is never ending .............
We own another landcruiser so we know all about money pits 😅
No Don’t sell it
We wont :)
No don't do it! 😊
sell it why waste your money
I think our idea of wasting money is different
I’ve had one would love another have a 60 series now but with a bit of Omph 485 hp LS3
Sell !
…sell the kid …NAH
