  • Set off on sunny morning April 26 for Spring Camp on Kinder Scout in the Peak District. Weather conditions rapidly deteriated, should I turn back, no way resulting in a fantastic unexpected winter wild camp

    Excellent! My father, my brother and I are all massive fans of yours. I'm in Thailand teaching, and I recommended you to my father, who then informed me that my brother back home, in Sheffield had already suggested that he should watch your fascinating videos. Seriously appreciated by all of my family.

      Hi Ray and thanks for kind comments, when out in the wilds and the weather turns bad it becomes more of a adventure and the more exciting and exhilarating it becomes, and I feel really alive. I quite often bump into people on the hills who say, " I know you" and its from RUclips, so one day I might see you, all the best Pat

    Great video. I've been a top of Kinder Scout in snow and low visibility and going up and down those bogs is energy sapping. The video is a great lesson - "you should always prepare for bad weather".

    Really enjoyed your video, and the opportunity to witness such a contrast of weather on the landscape. I love camping but wow, can't imagine camping in conditions like that. I'd have to well condition myself as I've been spoiled living here in sunny Queensland ... it was 29 deg. C. today and it's only the beginning of Spring. I know what I'll be cooking up for dinner tonight after seeing your meal there - stir fry :) ... thanks for sharing Patrick. Cheers!

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  7 лет назад +1

      Hi from sunny Queensland, our summer has just come to a end lucky to get to 29 deg. At first camping in the snow does not look too inviting from a warm house, but when your out in the snow you accustom to it and the challenge and sense of adventure take over.I find when it is freezing I can find ways of keeping warm, hot food more clothing and a hot water bottle for sleeping, but when I ,am too hot, not in this country then it is difficult to cool down apart from the shade or a breeze. anyway looking forward to winter and some snow,thanks for watching and comments Pat

    Good camp! Don't get me wrong, a lovely clear day, good views and comfortable temperatures are great. But, unexpected cold, snow or whatever extreme conditions make memories. I camped in Talgarth, in April about four years ago, and was unable to light my spirit stove indicating the temperature was below minus three degrees celsius. The tent flap was more like a proper wooden door it was so stiff with frost.
    Still, I enjoyed it - my feet were cold but I said to myself 'it's only your tootsies, rest is warm so go to sleep' and I did. But these are the memorable camps, the comfortable ones are enjoyable but quickly forgotten. Good video.

    Patrick, I picked up on your videos after watching your Kawasaki ER6N footage. Im a motorcycle tourer and use hotels... then I've watched a few of your walking/camping videos. Loved them, especially this one. Living in the Peak District I know how conditions on Kinder can change. Just wanted to say thoroughly enjoyed them, made my January night!!

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Craig, glad you enjoyed videos, if touring on a motor cycle then I think hotels are the way to go you deserve a bit of luxury after a day on a bike. I know how much camping gear I carry, and that,s just the basic gear never mind all your biking gear on top, I think I would need a trailer to get it all in. All the best for coming years adventures, Pat

    Absolutely HATE winter camping- have had to do it a many times (long story) but cold weather camping is just freaking miserable! Bless your heart, you do it with no trepidation! If ever there's an apocalypse, I'll travel south, because although winter is visually beautiful, the cold reality sucks! Bless you, Patrick, for making it look easy!

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Linda, I love the challenge of winter camping and being able to keep warm in cold conditions. But it is not always the best way to spend a winter's night, tent bound for 12 hours.
      Luckly we have a varied climate so my camps follow the varied conditions, all the best Pat

      Hi Pete, when wild camping a tasty filling meal is a important part of the camp. Apart from the fun of cooking a nice meal in the middle of no where on small stove, it taste so good outdoors and is a great way of keeping warm and getting a comfortable nights sleep, all the best Pat

    • @peteswright
      @peteswright 7 лет назад +2

      Hi Patrick. Just been watching your rehydration food vid. You're right, I know about food being important. I used to cook on site but now have noodles to get me some breakfast and supper to keep things simple and all I have to cook is WATER lol. I then eat wherever i can buy ready made. As i said at 67, i'm going for two nighters round the coast in my car & use a Quechua 2man tent. I do walk a lot, In fact just got back from Cleethorpes and have returned with GOUT in my right foot!!!. Must try your rib eye steak btw! Just bought a bag liner and Grabber blanket plus new S. bag cause you got me enthused again! keep at it mate. I too was into photography in the days of FILM. Digitals put me off a bit. Developed and printed in my darkroom & loved it. Im at North Anston now & did live up Commonside & had a flat overlooking the station off Granville rd too. Could go on but ....... ATB. Pete.

    Well done Patrick! This video is what it is all about. That spirit of adventure that lurks in folk like us. Some people say that we should all, at some time, practice something a little different; something to take us out of our"comfort zone". This video demonstrates this principle exactly. Life, as far as I am concerned, shouldn't be about a hedonistic approach to pleasures! Anyhow , once again, I say "Good on yer mate"!

      Hi Gordon yes I agree with you day to day stuff can get boring one camp like this recharges you for weeks something to remember for years. sometimes when out in bad weather you think why I,am I doing this, but the feeling of satisfaction after woods is worth all the hardship. thanks for your interesting comments Pat

      +Andy “RAINMAN” Wardle Hi Andy did,nt expect snow at this time of year but who knows with our climate .Must admit it made a basic camp into something a bit more interesting, Soulo performed well a bit noisy when wind got up perhaps after I set it up I was feeling cold and did not pay enough attention to adjusting guys as I just wanted to get into the tent and out the wind. I remember you said you had camped up near Crowden tower but when I got up there could not see a thing. Hope to return when weather a bit kinder and film the great views. Its good to know how to use a compass as you never know when you might depend on it. There are many books, guides, and an occasional class here in the states they may form to allow people to either learn or brush up on their skills. Thanks for the video.

      Hi again,when walking in this area a compass and map is essential, over the years I have got to know the area so feel safe up there as seem to reconnice the different rocks or landmarks. If I go to unfamiliar area I also take GPS with me as when the mist and cloud comes down difficult to know were you are without a accurate grid reference. Great stuff Patrick , i love winter camping its the best but the hardest. I use the Jannu for winter but i got a new summit/winter tent , not telling yet , want to get in out for a spin first lol. I take 2 stoves if going solo in winter. Yes if you've never been in whiteout/ low vis conditions its hard to realize how incredibly easy it is to get lost. Only time i've been lost was my local hills , i thought i could do my regular hike/camp blindfolded .......apparently not. I look forward to your next one atb Eddie.

    • @patrickdickinson6492

      Hi Eddie agree with you winter,s the best time for wild camping more challenging but a lot more rewarding, saw your Jannu tent on your previous videos,looked nice and spacious for cooking and extra winter gear. Definitely 2 stoves for winter if yourmiles from anywhere and one stove packs up as they do then your in big trouble and will get very cold with no warm food in you. Thanks for watching Eddie all the best Pat

    I drove to Manchester and back yesterday got back about half 12. The M62 had poor visibility at times and was snow covered in places. On the way back home i went via Woodhead Pass. Quite alot of snow left but parts of the road was flooded so had to be careful. There was alot of snow left at Stocksbridge. Its 14c in Worksop now. and i just can't believe how fast the snow came and went.

    Enjoyed your video as usual, you must have a very understanding wife! Took me back to my days "bog-trotting" over Kinder back in the day. I have an old photo of the summit when there used to be a small wooden pole in the centre of the cairn. I guess it must have rotted away...I find nowadays that a pair of lightweight walking poles are a great help over terrain such as this, with or without a twenty five pound pack! Look forward to your next video, keep up the good work.

      +roy kennie Hi Roy Can,t beat a bit of bog-trotting I sort of enjoy it nice soft peat. The summit certainly did not look like the highest point in Derbyshire, you would of thought it would of had a bigger cairn or post like you said.My wife is not always understanding of my camping trips but I think she realises if she wants a happy husband he needs his trips away and time on his own. Sticks a good idea for crossing such terrain, when I,am a bit older. Thanks for comments and watching all the best Pat

    Looked like a great outing Patrick, the weather has been crazy recently. I love the northern edge of Kinder, like you say you can usually get the place to yourself. Can't beat a good walk over the plateau to sharpen the navigation skills too :-) 4G at camp is handy when the weather isn't great. The image quality is great on this video, did you use a DSLR? Auto focus works well too. ATB Dean

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  8 лет назад +1

      +Dean Read Hi Dean and thanks for comments. I used my Sony A37 DSLT for majority of filming, I think the translucent mirror assists the auto focus when filming video, the problem as you will be aware is the weight when coupled with external mic ,leads spare batteries. I did take a new Sony Z5 mobile phone with me to try out thinking it could be the answer to the weight problem. The images were great but put the phone more than a couple of feet away and the audio quality dropped of as you might of noticed, wind noise is a problem as well.Obvious I want to produce best quality video and sound but in summer I can get my pack weight down to under 10 lb, but have 5 lb camera gear on top. Have you any thoughts on alternative systems Thanks Pat

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead 8 лет назад

      Hi Patrick Dickinson, I'm in the same predicament at the moment and I'm not sure which way to go. I use a Canon 7D with an external RODE microphone and it's pretty heavy and bulky. For me though I think the extra weight has been worth the improvement in visual / audio quality when compared to my phone or a point and shoot camera. It's just a pain when the weather is bad in comparison to something like a GoPro that is weather resist. Your video is excellently shot though, really like the picture quality you got.

      +Renegade Scot Hi Ray for winter and cold temperatures can,t beat a liquid fuel stove the heat is just constant, you know it will work even if really cold where gas is simple to use but just dies on you when cold. A liquid stove is more fun with flames poring out on first lighting it then a steady constant roar when up to heat bit like a well tuned engine.I think there is a version of my MSR Whisperlite and some others which will burn both gas and liquid, wish I,d gone foe one of them as gas is good inside tent for quick drink or just hot water for dried meal. All the best Ray thanks for watching Pat
