This was so beautiful! I don't know if I will ever manage a walk in the Peak District, for various reasons, but watching videos like this is the next best thing. And the heather really added to the beauty. Thanks Patrick!
@@solitaryrambler - No problem Patrick, wonderful show - Have you approached BBC4 ? - Only my opinion, but I think your walks would be a great hit on BBC TV.
I have a photo of the start of the Pennine way. I walked from there up to Upper Booth, past Jacobs Ladder. It was too steep for me after that. I found Robin Woods workshop so was pleased. Thanks for finishing it for me.
This was my first hike in the Peak District exactly the same route too. Definitely got the bug for from then on. As I suffer from COPD and at the age of 62 at the time it was quite an achievement that I’m proud of. I will do it again soon, before I cant 😂😂. Thank you very much for the brilliant video.
Did that walk many years ago forgot our beautiful it was around there thanks Patrick for bringing back some great memories looking forward to your next video
Did you know Patrick that a meter of peat takes a thousand years to accumulate? You were passing through over 2 meters of it there - all that history! I would love to walk Kinder Scout one day. I know you explored only a portion here - there are depths to it you simply cannot touch on in an afternoon. But this was another fantastic walk. So many insights and views. The clough looked a decent old scramble. The mountain is full of deep cuts like that. And I agree it might be the best part of the walk - a classic walk indeed. Well, good going. All the best as always. Mark
Morning Mark, it's fascinating when you look deeply into the history of our peat, incredible isn't it. You'd love Kinder Scout, it's wonderful to see with all those peat groughs but moreso with the views it provides. I'll be exploring more of it another when I can. Grindsbrook Clough was a good scramble, and there are many other cloughs up to the plateau that are more challenging. Thanks for joining me Mark on this classic walk. Have a great weekend 👍
That was absolutely fan bleeding tastic too Patrick. I've done this very walk many times, but it was fascinating to hear all the information about it as you went on your way. Every walk you film contains some nugget of advice or information,I learn something from every one of them,I have the same pay by phone app and what a great piece of advice about no signal and paying first from home. I'v done the walk in both directions, and coming up Grindsbrook Clough gives you a few flippin eck moments too. Glad you filmed inside the Nags Head too, hope you enjoyed your pint. A wonderful film, with great scenes, company and commentary, and lovely music too. Thankyou so much,I may have been quiet on the comments lately as I was repeating myself with every vlog, but I have watched, liked and thoroughly enjoyed every single one from 1 to 178. All the best Patrick, Pete.
Hi Pete, thanks as always for watching and for your great comments. This was a great one to shoot as I did it on the day after Bank Holiday Monday, hoping that it would be less busy with walkers, and it was, although still busy enough. I've only ever done the walk in this direction, never come up the clough. It was great to have that pint at the end! All the best 👍
A classic walk indeed Patrick and you did it the hardest way also. That descent down Grindsbrook is certainly tough on the old knees! Every time I see that start of the Pennine Way sign, I get a bit emotional as it reminds me of my experience last year. Really enjoyed seeing this fab route through your eyes and you certainly earned your beer at the Old Nags Head. Thanks for the cheeky mention at the top of Crowden Tower. I’d definitely recommend that climb up if you get chance. 😊
Thanks Anthony, yeah I gather most people do this walk the other way round for the reasons you've mentioned. I wanted to do it in this direction as I wanted to show a section of the start of the Pennine Way. I'd forgotten how great it is on Kinder as it's a long time since I was up there last. Will definitely be doing some more at some point when I can. Certainly watching your vids up the various cloughs has been a great inspiration too. That pint at the end felt like the best I'd ever drunk! 😊👍
Beautiful walk and area love the heather and the small bridges been to Edale many years ago but only visited the nearby caves love to go back and do this walk sometime soon!
Thank you again, Patrick. Your walks are so refreshing. No adds or anything, just reality. When heading for Grandbach Hill the other day, a guy pulled up in his car beside us and said " Where are you off to?" We answered with Gradbach hill and the Roaches and he then said, " Do you know it's so refreshing to see that you, unlike most, have all the gear you might need." He added how many ppl he sees wearing shorts t shirts, flip flops, and no water or backpack. We saw this even on Snowdon 😬
Morning Maggi, thanks for watching and for your great comments. It's so funny so see others without a pack dressed in the wrong type of gear for these walks 😬👍
When I say no adds, I mean you don't advertise gear! It's just so refreshing. Were off out tomorrow. I crashed after Fridays hike. I sped up faster than ever for the 400 metre climb. I still feel dead from my eyes back lol. So slowly tomorrow.
Patrick, my wife and I love your videos and discovered them during lockdown! Anyway, we are watching them from the beginning now and have visited lots of the places you've been to. Particularly enjoy a new musical score for each and every film.
Thank you so much for your great comments and for taking the time to watch. I'm so pleased you have enjoyed the videos, that means a lot. All the best 👍
You sure deserved that Pint at the end of that walk Patrick and what a fabulous walk that was!! The Heather in bloom was a fantastic sight to see but that wind looked fierce, must have been a warm day because you never mentioned it once! Thanks for your effort as usual.
Hi Patrick, many thanks for the shout out in this video, much appreciated The last time I walked that route was around 10 years ago with my grandson who was 12 years old at the time. I must have tired him out as he slept in the car all the way back to Matlock More than half the people I know locally prefer to tackle the route the other way round. I suppose, as you descend, you get to enjoy new views. As you are aware, I am an enthusiastic motor biker and ride most roads/lanes through the Peak District. The same road can offer a different view when travelled in the opposite direction. When you add the four seasons, you have an infinite amount of views to enjoy Great vid, keep them coming Mel & Ged
A pleasure to give you the shout out guys. I've never done this route the other way round, but it's certainly a fab walk either way. Agree with your points about the same road with different views and seasons, you never get tired of them 👍
Fantastic video, I last visited kinder scout back in the early 80s I was only a teenager my dad took myself & my friend up there. I'm 51 now & not in the best of health my dad passed away in 93 I want to go bk up there with the same friend before I'm to unfit to do it. Really looking forward to it & watching this has inspired me even more so many thanks 👍🏻
Some lovely shots of the surrounding countryside of Edale Patrick. I really enjoyed joining you on this route, and the angles of your shots. I have never done Jacob's Ladder, but know the feeling of thinking you're at the top, but more to come!! Also never been confident a about scrambles! Your melodic music I found appealing. Very nice to hear.
Many thanks Shanita, I particularly enjoyed making this one, so am pleased with the shots too. As it's been some years since last doing this walk, I had forgotten how far the climb was up onto Kinder, so kept thinking I was nearly at the top! 😂 Pleased the music was appealing to you, I'm happy with this score very much. Thanks as always for your great comments and for watching👍
I remember a walk I went on a few years ago. I was walking back from Higger Tor towards Owler Tor and a family were walking the other way, one person in high heels and it was me who ended up on my backside! And I was in full walking gear! 🚶♂️

Hi Patrick, I did this exact walk a few weeks ago and put a little vlog on my channel. I really enjoyed the route although coming down Grindsbrook Clough was a bit of an ankle twister! Anyway, I've just found your channel, liked and subbed 😄
Hi Carrie, many thanks for taking the time to watch, as well as liking and subscribing 😀 It's a great route, isn't it? Grindsbrook Clough was the highlight for me but, as you say, certainly an ankle twister! 👍😁

Cheers Russ and Wendy, Jacobs Ladder I didn't find too bad actually. I found scrambling down Grindbrook Clough harder, but also the most enjoyable part of the walk 👍
top tip for using edale car park, the penny pot cafe just next to do it down the steps has wifi, i just nip over there connect, use pay by phone app and be on my way
Unless my memory is playing tricks on me but your decent from Kinder Scout was my accent to Kinder Downfall on my Original 1977 Pennine Way Hike, twelve days to hike to Kirk Yetholme. Happy Memories that sadly are way beyond me now that I am retired. Tony in Essex.
Great filming Patrick. It's the best one I've seen going up Jacobs ladder. I've always said I love to hear all of your stories ... amazing story of the mountain bike riders. Could have heard more today. Take care Patrick. Enjoy the weekend my friend. I once got lost on Kinder Scout the evening before starting the Pennine way proper with my school friend. We ended up wandering aimlessly in circles for four hours trying to find the way back. We hadn't taken a map but everywhere looked the same with those peat hills.
Many thanks again for the great comments David. I find the plateau fairly uninteresting; as you say everywhere looks the same with those peat groughs and there's no point of reference. That's why I love the walk around the edges where you see more interesting stuff including the views. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend too 👍
Hi Patrick that was a beautiful walk the scenery was stunning. I loved seeing the heather, the big stones reminded me of the film Wuthering Heights I was looking out for Cathy lol You deserved that pint after such a long walk . Thanks again for another lovely video Best wishes Jean :)
Hi Patrick. Definitely one of the Peak District classics👍 And you timed it perfectly for the heather in bloom! I've ascended via Grindsbrook Clough, but never come down that way. I reckon it's a much better finale to a great hike than coming down via Jacob's Ladder! All the best and take care 👍😊
Evening Des, thanks for watching👍Yeah it was a great day of filming this and with all that purple heather. I even wore a purple shirt to match! 😊 Most people seem to have done this walk in the opposite direction, but like you've said I do like the finale of scrambling down Grindsbrook Clough! All the best 👍
i think you're right about these novice walkers. You see them on the rescue programmes where they were ill equipped and got into difficulties. Mainly because they didn't have a clue. I think the rescue teams should leave them up there lol. I love kinder. Edale is a great place and jacobs ladder is reknown. Your vids really make my day. Beautifully shot and edited, it's a treat to watch. Thank you so much Patrick
Morning Kelly, yes I do worry when I see ill equiped walkers on terrain as dangerous as Kinder Scout can be. It was nice to finally film this walk, glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks as always for your great comments and for watching 👍
Long time since I did that walk (in the reverse direction to yours). I was quite surprised to see the peat groughs still there. In my neck of the woods in the South Pennines - Black Hill, Saddleworth Moor, etc - they have all but disappeared due to regeneration measures such as blocking the groughs to silt them up, along with re-seeding. How nice to see them again. Have you ever done the circuit of the plateau? That's an interesting walk.
Hi Michael, those peat groughs are a real fixture of Kinder. It's a lovely route walking around the edges, but I've never done the whole circuit as yet. Many thanks as always for taking the time to watch and for commenting 👍
That's really funny, I did that exact same walk but in reverse on the same day as part of a group walk with Abbie Barnes! We must have passed each other at some point! I remembered about the lack of signal in Edale and pulled over just past Hathersage to pay and luckily there was a signal
The classic walk (I’d say absolutely (especially for us folks who don’t unfortunately call this wonderful place home)) Patrick you excelled yourself with this film (fabulous work 😊🙏🏼🏔) But I had to smile the (internet issue) Lol 😂 edale is the deepest black hole I’ve ever come across for lack of service 😱😂 Great climb great film 😊🙏🏼 All the best Simon 😊🙏🏼🏔
Morning Simon, happy Sunday to you 😊 Thank you so much for all your great comments, always appreciated. Yes the network is an issue in Edale as you obviously know too, I should have known better really! 😂 Glad you enjoyed this film, it was a real joy making this one in particular. All the best to you 👍
epic pat, you have one over me, ive bin up grinsbrook a few times but never down 🤔 that made me laugh "plastered in make with expensive trainers on" though ive seen similar often.
I've done that walk quite a few times over the years but it always takes me back to 1976 when I was a 16 year old Scout and along with 3 other Scouts we walked the pennine way over two weeks to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland, back then the start route was up Grindsbrook and over Knderscout. As always Patrick a pleasure to watch, we're happy for your house move glad you're happy with how things have worked out.
My dad's friend Terry held a record for the quickest Pennine way think it was only 3 days. Not sure if it still stands that was bk in the 70s he was an ex royal marine
Another great video Patrick. Who would have laid those path stones? They are on a lot of paths IN THE UK and would take a lot of effort. Thanks from NZ.
It was a plan of action from the National Trust started in the early 1980's. They started with Men and women employed through a government scheme to get the unemployed into work. I was part of a 10 man team that started at the packhorse bridge, all the stone we used came mainly from the bed of the river Noe carried by hand and the larger stones dragged on makeshift sledges with fencing stakes as rollers dragged up the hillside by a Turfer hand-winch . I'll pop a couple of photos on Patrick's Facebook page.
@@Peakwanderer We have managed to find the photos by different means. I take it that the mass of posts in the ground on the hillside are tree planting? Most interesting.
@@chriskiwi2601 Ah they show up as new comments and not all comments! A Facebook quirk I guess, yes those are the trees we planted, now well established mature trees in Patrick's great video.
Is the Peak District really considered East Midlands? I suppose geographically it could be so but I always feel I’m in the start of north country…… it’s just a feeling 🤪
There is a better scramble accessed as you ascend Grindsbrook Clough. When you reach the final ascent section to your right is a less well defined, unnamed Clough visible on the left at approx 16mins 15secs in the video.. It is a superb, easy scramble especially after rain with a pool to be negotiated and a small waterfall. The rocks underfoot are bright orange when wet. Sadly, much of the approach path from Edale has been made easier spoiling it and most unfortunately tempting people such as the ones you commented on without awareness of the dangers, to get themselves into trouble. 🤬
This was so beautiful! I don't know if I will ever manage a walk in the Peak District, for various reasons, but watching videos like this is the next best thing. And the heather really added to the beauty. Thanks Patrick!

Hey Patrick good to see you again ! would not mind doing this walk jacob's ladder mm !! don't know when though ha ! looks fantastic especially the nags head pub !!!! very picturesque always a pleasure to see your walks , !! give me and Wendy ( Mr & Mrs now ) another one of your shout out's sometime thanks Patrick !
Hi Patrick, A great walk as always . Nice to see all the lovely heather . Have a great weekend. 👍😊🙏
Glad you enjoyed it Cath, thanks for watching and for your comments. Have a great weekend too 👍
@@solitaryrambler Thanks Patrick 😊👍
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend too 👍
@@solitaryrambler Thanks Patrick.
Many thanks Jean as always. The heather was looking good wasn't it. I really enjoyed that pint afterwards 😀 Glad you enjyoed the video, all the best 👍
You play such lovely music it so suits 😊
Thank you very much! 👍
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video !😀
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍
@@solitaryrambler Thank you! Feel free to check out our content too❤ enjoy your weekend!
A great walk in superb scenery Patrick. Not a bad county is it?
The perfect end with a pint in the pub.Cheers Patrick.
This was a perfect day of filming Heyden, a lovely walk and good beer in a great pub at the end 👍
Good morning Patrick happy Friday 😊 ❤️ ☕️👍
Good evening Ceri and Kat, happy Friday to you too! 😊👍
Such a beautiful place 😍
It really is, a lovely area 😊👍
this was such a great adventure you showcase the district so well makes me want to go
Thanks for your great comments and for watching 👍
Absolutely wonderful. Hope we can join your walks one day in VR 360. Great stuff mate, keep the goodness up sir.
Many thanks again for your great comments and for watching 👍
Well done climbing that Ladder!
Thanks it wasn't too bad actually 👍
nice vid i did Jacobs ladder last Sunday it was packed however still had a great day cheers
Many thanks for watching, all the best 👍
powerful walk.
Another great video
Thanks again! 👍
thanks for a great video very informative
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍
i think you're right about these novice walkers.
I'm sure we must have done 👍
The classic walk (I’d say absolutely (especially for us folks who don’t unfortunately call this wonderful place home))
Patrick you excelled yourself with this film (fabulous work 😊🙏🏼🏔)
But I had to smile the (internet issue)
Lol 😂 edale is the deepest black hole I’ve ever come across for lack of service 😱😂
Great climb great film 😊🙏🏼
All the best Simon 😊🙏🏼🏔
Morning Simon, happy Sunday to you 😊 Thank you so much for all your great comments, always appreciated. Yes the network is an issue in Edale as you obviously know too, I should have known better really! 😂 Glad you enjoyed this film, it was a real joy making this one in particular. All the best to you 👍
@@solitaryrambler it showed 😊🙏🏼 great film great place 🏔🙏🏼😊
epic pat, you have one over me, ive bin up grinsbrook a few times but never down 🤔 that made me laugh "plastered in make with expensive trainers on" though ive seen similar often.
Cheers matey, you have one over me as I've never been up the clough. Those girls did make me laugh the way they were dressed 😅👍
Thank you for sharing. Looked a beautiful walk. How many miles and how long does it take please? 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting. Details are in the video description 👍
Excellent ive got a question im thinking of doing this walk this week do i need a compass to navigate the top thanks, Tone
I can't say as I filmed this on a very clear sunny day, but I guess it might be advisable 👍
Amazing areas! What a relaxation to watch you hike here, only one thing would be better: to join you :)
Thanks for your great comments and for watching 👍
What's the radio telescope at 08:46 . Surely it's not Jodrell bank ? Great video btw 😉👍
Many thanks! 😀 Not sure about Jodrell Bank, but I'm sure you're correct 👍
Do you remember Jacob's Ladder before the paved steps were installed?
I don't, but that may have been before I lived in Derbyshire 👍
@@solitaryrambler I am going back over 50 years.
Thanks Steve, yes I remember the Pennine Way originally went up Grindsbrook Clough. Thanks as always for watching and for your great comments 👍
Many thanks Chris, all the best 👍
@Chris I did post some images on facebook, but they have vanished, no idea why sorry.
In your words Patrick FAN - BLEEDING TASTIC !!! GRINDSBROOK CLOUGH MMM !! Dont know about that after my last experience in Lath Kill Dale !!!! ha
Fan-bleedin-tastic indeed! yeah you need to go careful down Grindsbrook Clough 😅
Cheers Patrick Celtic gold mmm !!
It was a good pint 👍
Hello Patrick that was fantastic we loved that walk the views from the top was amazing thanks for posting .
Thanks for watching and commenting Shaun, all the best 👍
Big thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍 thanks for the wonderful content with so beautiful view my new friend 🤗 stay blessed, stay connected 👍🤝✅💟✨🤍🇵🇰
Thank you so much 🙂
Good morning to you 😊
Good morning! 👍
Is the Peak District really considered East Midlands? I suppose geographically it could be so but I always feel I’m in the start of north country…… it’s just a feeling 🤪
Derbyshire is one of the East Midlands counties 👍
Top bloke
Cheers
There is a better scramble accessed as you ascend Grindsbrook Clough. When you reach the final ascent section to your right is a less well defined, unnamed Clough visible on the left at approx 16mins 15secs in the video.. It is a superb, easy scramble especially after rain with a pool to be negotiated and a small waterfall. The rocks underfoot are bright orange when wet.
Sadly, much of the approach path from Edale has been made easier spoiling it and most unfortunately tempting people such as the ones you commented on without awareness of the dangers, to get themselves into trouble. 🤬
Nice one, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
it's a shame to see the chemtrails at 6:06... there is no escaping them these days
thoroughly enjoyed this video, thanks! I'm off there wild camping soon can't wait
