Hi Andy yes lucky to get the snow camp in, another day and it would of all gone. When I woke in the morning a lot warmer and snow had almost gone, very windy, I knew my pegs were pushed into solid frozen ground that had now thawed, !uckly they held. If I had camped 5 meters in front of the tent I would of been layed in what was now a small stream, all exiting stuff. Good to keep our older viewers In touch with there past and reminding them of good times from there younger days,I might be one of them soon, all the best Pat
Youth is wasted on the young... I have to rely on brave souls such as you for my wild camping adventures, these days. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. All the best.
Inspiring video as always . We were in hathersage / Stanage edge at weekend and I hope to be in Edale and ringing roger this weekend . What you say is so true. Snow is brief here . You need to seize the moment . Best wishes from the Manchester end of the peak .
Nice to hear from the Manchester beside. I only live about 6 miles down from Stanage Edge, everywhere it seems to be snowing apart from round here at the moment, all the best Pat
Nice video Pat. Snedge aint what it used to be! I can remember venturing up onto Bleaklow back in the eighties and it used to drift so deep you could drop into the voids up to waist level if you wandered off the track. I can well understand you giving the Rambler and Nags Head a miss as their 4WD driver friendly tap prices are truly scandalous. The arctic hares really stand out on Bleaklow now due to reduced snow covering. One spring after the winter thaw i went up there and found the skeletons of a pair of them stood up like they were boxing! I would guess they either starved or froze to death in a blizzard and huddled together in their final moments. Going up here this weekend. It actually feels even colder these days as the snow is not as dry as it used to be and is wet to the touch. It used to be loose, dry and powdery back then to the point that you needed crampons to get traction on it. Global warming is definitely a real thing as the younger generation have nothing to compare it against.
@@Voodoo_Ray I can understand this as the ground is not as cold as it used to be at this altitude. I can honestly remember it setting concrete hard like permafrost for weeks on end. You can actually feel the snow melting and evaporating around you now and it makes the going very damp and cold. It actually used to have an insulating effect in the past and was ideal for bivouacking.
@@MrDegsy69 I remember 2008/9 and 10 being decent years. If memory serves snow fell in Nov and didnt leave till April. The Greenfield road and Holme Moss were closed for weeks. We had 15 foot plus drifts. We built quinzees and snow holes on black hill and people were skiing on Bleaklow
@@Voodoo_Ray I can remember some really good winters up there in the past. It was about the only time you could actually walk up on Black Hill back then without getting stained jet black in the deep peat bogs before they laid the erosion treatment down on the P.W. It always amazes me how low passenger airliners seem to be flying above there but them you have to remember how high above sea level it actually is. I sometimes visit the wreck of the B29 super fortess 'over exposed' up on Shelf Stones. This was a payroll flight on route between RAF Scampton and Burtonwood. It ploughed into the top in low cloudbase, poor visibility conditions. This was not uncommon prior to GPS navigation as aircraft flew in 2D plots back then on altimeter and compass bearing settings. You only had to get the calculation of a strong side wind wrong and you could easily drift into the hill tops if you could not see them in zero visibility. I liken this to the aeronautical equivalent of hitting a reef. This all stopped at a certain point in time with the advent of GPS navigation. Indeed this is my prefered method of crossing Bleaklow in thick mist these days as if you stray off the path you will end up walking in wide circles!
Thanks for bringing this to our screens Patrick. Those still images at the start and the end were awesome. It's been a long time since you made a camping video. I like them the best. No doubt I will watch it several times over, with a hot coffee made on my camping stove in the my warm kitchen flat here.
I hope that ice is soft. looks treacherous. Snow in the highlands is beautiful We like to go on our first outing in April as the first thaw starts up. The ice softens during the day and it's okay to walk on.
@@BluefirephoenixJen yes I understand you have seen the damage caused by a slip and fall, awareness is my risk assessment, and hopefully it makes me wary, thanks Pat

Hi, I love your videos. I’m from Hong Kong, sweet and sour food are mostly served in our area in Guangdong. But I have to say I’ve never seen a meal like that before combing with sweet and sour sauce from Guangdong, pound beef, vacuum veg, and Udon the noodle from Japan. I’m gonna give it a try on my next camping trip. Thanks for an awesome new idea!
Hi Pat, Great Vid. Just lost my dear Mother-in-law who was adventurous right to the very end. Your words are indeed, very wise. I shall make sure I adhere to your philosophy :-)
My grandad was very fond of these places he knew very well in his youth and spent a lot of time until moving to Norfolk when he was around 50. He always talked fondly in conversation about them. He lived to 88 and went for a couple of walks with the dog every day up to his last year or so. Thanx for this video Pat be well bud:)
Hi Felix yes once you be visited Kinder Scout and Bleaklow and there wild places of the Peak District, then you never forget them, you just yearn to be back up there, in the wild and beautiful countryside. All the best Pat
Another cracking video pat really enjoyed it I'm from sheffield never been up on kinder but this has really inspired me to give it a go cheers pat stay safe matey 👍
Kinder is another world, especially in winter, but beware the weather can change quickly, so easy to get lost when the mist comes down,if you stay on the edge path bit easier to navigate, enjoy yourself up there, thanks Pat
One of your best yet! I only stumbled over one of your videos from 3 years ago around the start of January. Caught up on almost all of them, they get better and better! Love the relaxing accompanying music soundtrack on here too, i feel it really works. I should have been going up there today but for waking up with a bad back ( yes at 39 years old ) So when this one dropped in my inbox, i was still able to experience it thanks to you. Have a great day and i look forward to many more! :)

I used to carry a large tarp which had a footprint larger than my tent, would throw that down before pitching and put the rucksack and other gear on top. Once the tent's up you can slide it under later.
Thanks David, thoughtful thing to say, cram as much in as you can. I,am now stuck in the garden sort of wasting my time, all of us in the same position though, looking forward to when we can return to the hills, thanks Pat
I was a member of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Team for a while, back in the 70s. At one particular time I was leading a group of students. We got up to Kinder plateau, but it was much too windy to keep moving with the students. Found a boundary wall that sheltered us, I cooked the food for them all, then into the sleeping bags inside bivvy bags, 3 people in each one. The bivvy bags were giant thick plastic bags, kept ius insulated ferom the ground especially using sleep mattresses. Boots were kept on all night, rather than hit the problem of frozen boots and not being able to get them back on. Damp socks removed and placed inside sleeping bags aand dry, new socks put on for overnight. Great trip back down to the flatlands and the hostel, where we had a second breakfast just like Hobbits.
Wow Dave bit of a adventure you had up there on Kinder, lucky you had the survival bags or things could do been so different. I bet the students still talk about it today........ thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 I did have a similar adventure on the Brecons in the winter. Again a very, VERY, cold wind, and a shortage of issued equipment. I dished out what spare kit I had to the worst suffering students. I decided to bring them down to the valley road, and on the way down came across a group of soldiers huddling behind a wall. They were in summer uniforms, and had two ponchos between the 5 of them, so were suffering very badly. I made hots drinks for all of use and then kept going down, with the 5 soldiers sheltered in the middle of our group. When we got down to the road there was an army lorry parked there. The sergeant came storming across, shouting at me for not leaving them there. Luckily. I shouted back, "You will address me as Sergeant-Chef". (the equivalent tp a Company Sergeat Major), I had served in the French army, so knew my protocol. "My job is to save lives of recruits. What is your name and unit? And I want that right now. I will be reporting you to the Redcaps for negligence". He soon calmed down when he realised he had gone way over the rules concerning raw recruits, especially in winter and badly equipped. That was fun.
I go up there with a 20 kg rucksack 🎒 I feel it the next day 😂 i’m 44 only just getting into it with my rab900 sleeping bag went to Snowdon a couple of weeks ago wild camped up there
Another interesting and beautifully filmed video, Patrick! Do you have a new camera? Those landscapes were so inspiring - I may create a painting based upon one of your images. Glad you got back down safely, we were a bit worried about you in that wind!

Hi Pat, I totally agree with what you said about age and growing old, if you're anything like me then we're never going to get old...only older (big difference), never lose you're sense of adventure mate or your idea's of getting out and about while you can, also having a sense of humour helps and not taking life to seriously. I have always been a bit of a "silly arse" doing different things and taking the odd risk here and there and i guess i always will be...it keeps me happy and cheerful just like yourself...anyway enough of my waffle and i'll end by saying it was another enjoyable video and i look forward to your next adventure. I always enjoy your videos Patrick, thanks. I'd love to do some winter camping, but I've only got a three season tent. I was thinking if I took plenty of warm clothes and a sub zero sleeping bag , perhaps I'd be okay. I've never camped in the snow, I bet it's fun.
Great fun, a real adventure but got to be prepared, will be cold, so winter sleeping bag and thick mattress, please try of clothing and thermal,s. If you find a sheltered epsite lower down your tent should be ok, just keep our the wind, thanks Pat
Welldone Pat, Another great winter camp. We've got snow down south in Wiltshire right now:) Snow is fickle stuff and like you say "It's here one day and gone the next". Glad you got to make the most of it. Sandy
Thanks Pat! Spectacular views. Thanks for cheering up my January, it's always a bit of an anti-climax after Christmas is over. I remember the clouds coming in on the Moors and also my Dad's walking boots that he lent me. Our feet were the same size, but unfortunately not the same shape!
Your videos Patrick are one of the main reasons, I decided to get back into wild camping after 35 years (on Dartmoor at the time) now mainly Peak District). Now at 60, I am a little slower and it is more painful recovery after a Wild Camp, but oh so worth it. Thankyou for the inspiration!
Great that your back out wild camping, I think mentally we are well motivated and experienced, it's júst the slow loss of fitness that affects us all as we get older, just adapt to our new lifestyle, we may bump into each other one day...... thanks Pat
Hi Patrick, great video - and photography - thank you - I first walked over Kinder 34 years ago aged 19 when I got it in my head I was going to do a solo PW walk - I gave up at day 5! (in mid summer). I've only been back twice since (and each time walked a bit further - but never in winter. It does definitely bring back memories, and perhaps I'll get back again one day to finish the walk!
Hi Graham, I think they say that first section of the PW is the toughest part,at least I was only out for 24 hours, so it was easy for me, all the best Pat

What a great adventure, its very inspiring to actually get up and do it yourself! Well done my friend, looking forward to your next adventure out in the peaks!
Good to see you eating so well. It can't be done on tea and biscuits! And why can you still do it? Because you DO it. Keeping fit and healthy is in our own hands. BTW I think the _fresh_ snow would be fine to drink. It's only rain after all.

You're right Pat "just beautiful" it truly is a wonderful landscape up there & the snow adds to the character, love the place. As you will well know the weather can change in an instant up there & the snow melting overnight it must have put a bit of rain down. That chinese & the steak looked very nice,i'm coming out with you next time ;-) I have a few older subscribers that i get saying that they can no longer get out & watching mine & the like are the next best thing,it's nice to read such comments aint it.well as always Pat love watching you're camping vids.take care out there, tfs & atb mate..Andy.
Thank you Patrick, you're the best!!
Very kind of you to say, I know I've been " missing " but hopefully back soon, thanks Pat
Hey Pat, I admire that you keep motivated to do these trips for us to view keep it going as long as you feel you can.
Yes David, look forward to these camps, planiingmy next one now, thanks Pat
Absolutely fantastic video Pat keep them coming.
Thanks for that, Pat
Youth is wasted on the young...
I have to rely on brave souls such as you for my wild camping adventures, these days. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us.
All the best.
Often said that, mind you I wish I had a bit more youth in me, amazing up there, all the best Pat
Truly thrilling stuff Pat, your as tough as hob nail boots my friend, no question. TC
Thanks Alan, while I can climb up there I am still young, haha
Thank you Pat for another spectacular video.
Glad you enjoyed it Pat
Hi pat going camping this time of year is hard core. But a least you can pick anywhere to pitch up love your videos keep safe mate 👍
Yes got the place to myself up there, thanks Pat
Really enjoyed that Patrick. The only thing that was missing was a Union Flag in that last photograph taken on the summit.
Bulgarian Organic Smallholding No a Yorkshire flag
I know people who have been avalanched/cornice collapsed on bleaklow in the last 10 years
@@Voodoo_Ray I can understand this as the ground is not as cold as it used to be at this altitude. I can honestly remember it setting concrete hard like permafrost for weeks on end. You can actually feel the snow melting and evaporating around you now and it makes the going very damp and cold. It actually used to have an insulating effect in the past and was ideal for bivouacking.
@@MrDegsy69
I remember 2008/9 and 10 being decent years.
@@MrDegsy69 I know Bleaklow and Black Hill all too well. Far too much of my time was spent looking for the navigationally challenged 😉
Ooohhh must one other thing we don’t call it kinder no more we call it PD Scout now lol haha ...!
Pat your a total legend mate..!
Amazing place
Thanks for bringing this to our screens Patrick. Those still images at the start and the end were awesome. It's been a long time since you made a camping video.
I like them the best. No doubt I will watch it several times over, with a hot coffee made on my camping stove in the my warm kitchen flat here.
Glad you enjoyed it David, it was a bit of a adventure,my vidios will be a mix again this year, I,ll try and get a few more wild camps in, thanks Pat
Brilliant I love your videos pal one of the few channels you find and actually consistently enjoy the content.
Cheers Patrick.
Great video young man 🏹
Thanks Paul
Well done Pat. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks Mark
great adventure pat
Thanks amazing up there. Thanks Pat
Great adventure as always Pat!
Yes great place up there, Pat
👍👍Nice one Pat ⛄👍👍
Thanks for that, Pat
I hope that ice is soft. looks treacherous. Snow in the highlands is beautiful We like to go on our first outing in April as the first thaw starts up. The ice softens during the day and it's okay to walk on.
Hi yes I think a thaw had set in as I climbed up, very wet snow, no ice really, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 I was an orthopedic nurse. Most the wintertime fractures were ice related. I have to have my nurse hat on now and then :-)
@@BluefirephoenixJen yes I understand you have seen the damage caused by a slip and fall, awareness is my risk assessment, and hopefully it makes me wary, thanks Pat
Nearly sneeked past me this one , hi patric great video mate, i have used a trangia with good results in similar conditions at edale cross.
Yes Trangia always reliable Pat
Brilliant video,,,really enjoyed it.
Thanks Andrew
Salt of the earth you are mate. 👍
Thanks for the kind comments, thanks Pat
At 02:55 the most satisfying part ...walking perfectly in time with the beat 🥁
Thanks Dean, the start of a hard climb up, but such a fantastic place up there, thanks Pat
I was up there yesterday Pat. Windy and bitter cold.
What a great camp Patrick. Your ethos is brilliant. As someone who has been camping since the age of 13 and having had a RUclips channel for just shy of 4 years, I can honestly say it's such an inspiration to hear your wise words from the tent. I'll be sharing this video in our Facebook group. Brilliant. ATB
Thanks I really appreciate your comments, I sometimes think about the day I have my last night's camp on Kinder and think how sad it would be, I quickly banish it from my thoughts, I don,t want to think about it. Thanks again for your comments, Pat
I definitely think this was a great adventure
Yep the snow made it a great adventure, thanks Pat
Hi, I love your videos. I’m from Hong Kong, sweet and sour food are mostly served in our area in Guangdong. But I have to say I’ve never seen a meal like that before combing with sweet and sour sauce from Guangdong, pound beef, vacuum veg, and Udon the noodle from Japan. I’m gonna give it a try on my next camping trip. Thanks for an awesome new idea!
Thanks and nice to hear from you on Hong Kong, hope you are well we see you on the news quite alot, great camp and great meal, all the best Pat
Hi Pat, Great Vid. Just lost my dear Mother-in-law who was adventurous right to the very end. Your words are indeed, very wise. I shall make sure I adhere to your philosophy :-)
Yes Paul we all have to make the most of our time while we can, all the best Pat
Walking up to Ringing Roger from Edale was my first walk to Kinder in 1984, I love that walk ! Thanks for this Patrick
Was looking forward to one of your winter snow camps for a while now and I was not disappointed , great video Patrick.
Yes I was lucky to get to camp in the snow before it melted. Thanks Pat
That was great,I really look forward to ur wild camp videos👍👏👏👏ope u keepin well so we can enjoy many more wi ya,all the best, baz👍😉
Yesbackpain can get you anytime, once had be layed on the floor for weeks, hope you soon recover which I,am sure you will, Kinder will wait, all the best Pat
That meal looked so good, so much so I had to go and get a 1am snack while I watched this last night.
Remember this one, probably my last camp in the snow couple years back..... thanks Pat
Wow. Nice . Take care.
Thanks Marsha
I used to carry a large tarp which had a footprint larger than my tent, would throw that down before pitching and put the rucksack and other gear on top. Once the tent's up you can slide it under later.
Yeah sounds a good idea, hard work when you can't put anything down, thanks Pat
If I can have Patrick's attitude to life when I'm his age I wont be doing too bad at all
Thanks David, thoughtful thing to say, cram as much in as you can.
(the equivalent tp a Company Sergeat Major),
I had served in the French army, so knew my protocol. "My job is to save lives of recruits. What is your name and unit? And I want that right now. I will be reporting you to the Redcaps for negligence". He soon calmed down when he realised he had gone way over the rules concerning raw recruits, especially in winter and badly equipped.
That was fun.
I go up there with a 20 kg rucksack 🎒 I feel it the next day 😂 i’m 44 only just getting into it with my rab900 sleeping bag went to Snowdon a couple of weeks ago wild camped up there
20 kg quite heavy, but as long as you are out enjoying yourself, that's all that counts, all the best Pat
Another interesting and beautifully filmed video, Patrick! Do you have a new camera? Those landscapes were so inspiring - I may create a painting based upon one of your images. Glad you got back down safely, we were a bit worried about you in that wind!
Thanks Natasha I used a little Sony Rx 100 not as good as my DSLR but alot lighter, still difficult to get rid of the wing noise, having to record audio separate, looking at different cameras all the time, thanks Pat
Only just found your channel spot on mate loving it 👍
Great to have you along John, should be out wild camping now but might have to wait a bit, all the best Pat
Just stumbled upon your channel. We're waiting for it to cool down and we shall be off up Kinder Scout on our first wild camp. 👍
Glad you, ve found me, hope to keep you entertained, I will be out wildcamping again soon, too hot for me at the moment as well, thanks Pat
Great stuff pat. Enjoyed that video . Your tea looked proper nosh , glad to have found your channel again . Cheers Lawson
being from inner city london, when i want to relax i watch a few videos from pat and it takes my mind away from the concrete jungle, another fantastic gem.thanks pat
Thanks Sami, although only 20 miles from Sheffield you felt like yo were in another world up there, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 such wild beautiful places i never knew existed in the uk until i watched your videos.god bless you and grant you a long life,so you can make thousands of people like me very happy with you videos.my prayers are with you always
Hello just wanted to say what beautiful photos you have taken. Enjoyed your snowy walk. Glad you kept warm. Always enjoy your adventure's. X
Thanks Mary, lovely and warm with my hot water bottle, nice to hear from you, Pat
So much more interesting than Griff Rhys Jones and the Bradbury woman 'discovering' places that were never lost with the aid of a huge production team.
Yes I,am just a one man band, thanks Pat
Great video Patrick.
Especially liked your comments on older viewers that might no longer be able to get out and about as much as they once could.
You are a real inspiration.
The true Waighright spirit.
Thanks Charles, always get a lot of comments from older viewers who once tramped these very hills, so important to recognise them, and I,am fast approaching one of them, thanks Pat
'FANTASTIC' Pat, I know where your coming from. I'm a city dweller and long for the peace and quiet that you find on your wild camp adventures. I watch your vids and to some extent I feel that I'm out there doing the camp myself, TOP BLOKE Pat. keep em coming. bigs thumbs up !!!
Thanks Gary, really appreciate your comments thanks Pat
Yet again Pat another wonderful camping video. Your energy is second to none and you say you are old. Surprised to see you eating weetabix for breakfast instead of the famous Pat fry up. Looking forward to your next video. The BBC needs to give you your own show so the whole world can see how camping is meant to be done.I wonder what next from you? Be careful out there.
Thanks appreciate your comments, yes missed the breakfast but main thought we to get back down and get dried out. Camping gintne snow, what adventure, all the best Pat
Great video. Think I'll head to Kinder for my next over-night hike+camp. Don't think my hiking equipment is quite up to those temps though, so will have to pick a slightly warmer time.
Yes amazing up there any time if the year, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick I have been looking forward to your overnighters and again I wasn't disappointed.I remember growing up in Scotland we as kids used to eat the snow,it was a different world then 50 0dd years ago.Congratulations on walking past two pubs haha I know you like a pint!.You are so right my friend on doing it while you can,I admire your drive.
Best Regards George
Great camp in the snow Patrick looked good to be out! The weather does change so quickly here in the UK there was snow here a week ago and 1 degrees now it’s 60-70 mph winds and 12 degrees! All the best.
Glad to see you're clear of your illness Patric. get making new vids. i need to know some good wild camps in Doncaster....
A Yorkshireman cooking Chinese food on Kinder Scout. Surreal.
Welldone Pat,
Another great winter camp. We've got snow down south in Wiltshire right now:)
Snow is fickle stuff and like you say "It's here one day and gone the next".
Glad you got to make the most of it.
Sandy
Love the vid mate. In fact love all your vids. Just one question. Why purify the snow? Surley if its fresh and white it just needs melting?
Hi James yes that's what I thought but I googled it while up there and general opinion was that it should be booked or filtered, thanks Pat
Thanks Pat! Spectacular views. Thanks for cheering up my January, it's always a bit of an anti-climax after Christmas is over. I remember the clouds coming in on the Moors and also my Dad's walking boots that he lent me. Our feet were the same size, but unfortunately not the same shape!
Hi Chris, yes made my January as well, thanks Pat
We are expecting more snow today and thursday. Was this recorded last week?
Yes Michael I was out Thurs/ Fri last week, thanks Pat
Another quality video Patrick, you can’t beat camping in the snow in winter.
Thanks your right, glad I managed it before it all melted Pat
You're crazy! Watching this in bed with a hot water bottle. Do you prefer the nags head or the ramblers? Nags head for me
Yes agreed the Haggs Head, Pat
I love that place... But I will leave camping out in this weather to you lot.. Haha... Well done and fantastic video again x
Yes I,be always loved Kinder in summer or winter, a magical place, thanks Pat
Fantastic camp Patrick and very wise words what a difference a day makes thanks for taking us along
Yes Alan it suprised me how quick it went, I,am glad I got up there before it all went, thanks Pat
Great that your back out wild camping, I think mentally we are well motivated and experienced, it's júst the slow loss of fitness that affects us all as we get older, just adapt to our new lifestyle, we may bump into each other one day...... thanks Pat
Another fabulous video with some nice visuals. "Keep up the great content Patrick"
Yes with views like that, makes you feel great, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick, great video - and photography - thank you - I first walked over Kinder 34 years ago aged 19 when I got it in my head I was going to do a solo PW walk - I gave up at day 5! (in mid summer). I've only been back twice since (and each time walked a bit further - but never in winter. It does definitely bring back memories, and perhaps I'll get back again one day to finish the walk!
Hi Graham, I think they say that first section of the PW is the toughest part,at least I was only out for 24 hours, so it was easy for me, all the best Pat
Most enjoyable as always pat, some beautiful snowscape pics.
Your food always looks so yummy.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Wayne, beautiful up there it was, thanks Pat
Another fantastic video Patrick. The Peaks look great winter or summer.
Hi Harry yes amazing at anytime of the hear, thanks Pat
Thanks for another fabulous video. The adventures you've had. Amazing. Watching you with no gloves on though has made me shiver lol. Cheers pat.
Hi yes I noticed that, trouble was everytime I stopped to take a photo or film I took my gloves off to operate the camera, they quickly epwent back on though, thanks Pat
Very reflective Patrick. I'm 63 and that's pretty much my thoughts on ageing as well.
Same age and same thought,s...Pat
What a great adventure, its very inspiring to actually get up and do it yourself! Well done my friend, looking forward to your next adventure out in the peaks!
Yes the snow made it a real adventure, thanks Pat
Good to see you eating so well.
It can't be done on tea and biscuits!
And why can you still do it?
Because you DO it.
Keeping fit and healthy is in our own hands.
BTW I think the _fresh_ snow would be fine to drink. It's only rain after all.
Yes, climbing up onto Kinder would give anybody a good appetite, beautiful place, all the best Pat
Just wondering do you ever see any deers or stags ,or wallaby's , I know they have them around there , I'm from Buxton
Hi alot of tracks of mountain hares, not much else though, Pat
