I'm a recovering alcoholic. I'm 25 and have been drinking since I was about 12. Whilst I don't drink rum, I realise that this could've just as easily been me. My father was an alcoholic, too. Soon enough I found out that he wouldn't notice if I took his some of his whiskey every other day or so. My mam was never in the picture seeing as my father wasn't exactly a desirable man to be married to. In recent years I joined the Royal Navy and have been trying to get my shit together ever since. This video was a huge wake up call for me the first time I saw it. I still come back to it every once in a while. Thank you.
I realized that I'm an alcoholic last year, but it's really difficult to break my drinking habits, even though I see how it's negatively affecting me as time progresses. How were you able to quit, and how did joining the Royal Navy help? I'm asking sincerely, because I really need to break this downward spiral I'm in.
I hope you are still doing ok, my Friends in the royal navy describe it as a floating bar, basically most officers on their ship where functioning alcoholics.
Good thing the navy stopped the tot, eh?
Hey I know it’s been 2 years but I hope you’re doing well

Literally on day 44 of no alcohol! I have friends that still try to get me to drink, and that’s where I say YOU’RE NOT MY FRIEND! I’m done with it. I drank for 20 years and I’m slowly recovering! Every time I think ok maybe a few drinks I watch this video! Staying strong y’all!
Great going
That is fantastic. I hope you’re still doing well with your recovery. You should be proud of yourself for prioritising your health over friendships with people who do not have your best interests at heart, that’s a hard thing to do even if you’re not dealing with an addiction. Stay strong, and remember you’re not alone. I’m just a stranger but I’m proud of you and I hope you continue to build a healthier, happier future for yourself.
I hope you are still on the wagon. If not, don't feel bad, but I hope you get back on. Don't give up.

I'm so glad he lived. He had a pretty messed up childhood and it was admirable that a kid was able to raise his sister and make a living as part of a band after being abandoned by his parents and getting an alcohol addiction from his father.
I don't like it when a parent does that to a child that's drinking. she didn't even think it would get worse and making it hard on him and his little sister that he have to take care of. some parents don't think those things when it comes to people drinking. even your friends can be real hush on you just because they find out you drink. even though you a type that doesn't drink all the time. not everyone in the world gets addicted with drinking and smoking. people need to stop judging people to much when it comes to that stuff. they are just going to make things worse on people that are having a hard life or just don't know the dangers on what they are taking in there bodies. and those people are all talk because on the fact they think taken pills well do them any good. they don't even know medicine addiction is also a thing.

I am guessing you are young, so take my advice: drink more water. Oh, you will get away with it and will be totally fine for the next 10 years or so, but believe me: you WILL eventually get your first kidney stone. You will know it when it happens, because it will feel like being racked in the balls TIMES TEN MILLION. And then you will wish you had drunk more water.

Going on 3 years sober after half my life as an addict and alcoholic! Alcohol really is shit on the body. Finally finding the love for my own physically self and wanting to be healthy drove me to sobriety. Learning about its dangers and what it does to you is so important. thank you for making this video!
im trying to stop, but when I dont drink im up every hour of the night cant sleep!
It took a full year before I physically felt healthy after I quit drinking.
I’m a recovering alcoholic and when I start getting strong urges to drink again I watch this video. Shit is scary as hell and it works every time. Thanks!
hope you doing good fam.
You should read the meditations by the roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. It helped completely qwell all urges forever. I have never had a strong urges since then.
It really helped me. Before that I had 3 alcohol overdose in my life and I am only 22.
Sometimes we just need some very intelligent philosopher telling us we doing life wrong and explaining it with such unparalleled logical reasoning that you really start getting it through your thick skull.
Trust me, that thing has saved my life.
Good luck man. You got this shit! Stay strong!
You got this!!!
This story might help you to stay motivated as well. I don't usually share it online, but this might be useful for you.
My father had long had an alcohol problem. Five years ago, he took therapy and stopped drinking. After a few sober months, his motivation to live, hapiness, health, engagement as a father and as a person, towards both his work and our community, were higher than I ever hoped for. I actually 'discovered a completely different father'. I absolutely love the father I got to know when he was sober. When he was both physically and, more importantly, mentally recovered. He was a completely different person when sober. He didn't realise the extent to which this was true himself.
After 6 months of being the fantastic father one could only dream of, he had a weak moment and started drinking again.
He died 4 years later, at the age of 55. I was 20.
If you have children, a partner, or anyone who loves you. Please think about how much difference you can make to their lifes, by staying strong.
You can do this!!
You're doing good!! Keep going!! :D

I’m an alcoholic and even I see this as a wake-up call. If this doesn’t motivate you to cut back on your drinking, I don’t know what will. Excellent video, doctor!!
Yeah, this is definitely making me rethink some stuff. Knowing what’s going on inside the body really helps weight the pros and cons of drinking-
alcohol withdrawal with seizures, confusion and tachycardia motivated me
Hear me out. The initials were changed, but this is the story of Pigpen from the Grateful Dead. He began drinking at 13, formed a habit extremely quickly, was in the band Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, and died of complications of alcoholism, namely a gastrointestinal hemorrhage in 1973 at the age of 27

That's what a lot of those ones do. . . And try to pretend to the world that they are good parents . . If you ever see one constantly trying to pass off the image of being a good mother. Chances are she is over compensating for inadequacies. . . . Look at Katie Price for a perfect example of this.

FootballJunkie I haven't ever drank and don't plan on it since I have seen drunks that are horrible people and I don't want to end up like them though I may drink every once in awhile like on occupations to celebrate like Christmas
abel vasquez those peopoe just cant handle it. dudes like us can. we do it responsibly. we know were not bad people when we get drunk. we just enjoy the buzz and stay happy.
FootballJunkie I see what you did there...
FootballJunkie Eyyyyyyy
TheLactatingAnus I know the way I write stuff is almost as retarded as I think I didn't even remember writing this comment oh well, but drinking on special occasions such as Christmas is fine but abusing it and chugging it every day is pretty bad
i’m coming up on 3 years sober on April 9th. i didn’t drink nearly as much as him, but i drank a lot. my family is filled with recovered alcoholics. this puts a lot into perspective for me.
I knew Pigpen. I went to one of the earliest Grateful Dead concerts in San Francisco, at an event called the Trips Festival in January 1966, organized by Ken Kesey. Pigpen was the keyboard player, as you mentioned. At that time the Grateful Dead was essentially a bar band playing Top 40 music and they dressed head to toe in black leather. Their signature song was a cover of Wilson Picket's Midnight Hour which they would play at midnight for almost an hour - the beginning of their iconic extended jams. It was a great time to be a teenager (I was 19). I love your ability to explain medical the pathology of these medical conditions at the elemental level.
This guy's verbal delivery is awesome. Just gripping. You're forced to pay attention.
Didn't think of it that way, but yea.
OMG - you hit the nail on the head lol. He could be talking about washing his dirty laundry and you are forced to be like "fuck yeah - that's fascinating - you must use fabric softener or you will die "😂
"He would down a full handle of rum for breakfast every day."
"At times when they thought he was supposed to be sober..."
...WHEN?!
When you're that much of an alcoholic "sober" just means you've got the lowest blood alcohol level of the day/week.
Once your drinking that much that he would down several bottles of wine to be drunk on top of the rum. That handle just made him feel like us after a tall boy. The liver is so damaged it's not effectively producing acetahldehyde so he's not actually getting as drunk. His body can't even turn the alcohol into the chemical that makes you intoxicated. It's a cycle that happens to alcoholics. You drink which damages the liver and makes your brain more resistant to intoxication so you drink more which makes the liver less efficient at making you intoxicated so you drink more which makes the brain more resistant so you drink more which makes the liver less efficient so you drink more. This is an exponentially increasing tolerance
I really love his content he is amazingly passionate and he seems to be well disciplined
I love your videos! it’s so engaging and addicting

My blood pressure was around 80/40 once. I was doing a lot of cardio and had about 9% body fat. Wild to hear that's considered so dangerous I felt great.
I think low blood pressure is not bad if it is exercise induced. In one case, heart is not strong enough to pump all the necessary nutrients with such low blood pressure and heart beat per mjnute. However, exercise induced might not be a problem, as heart gets better -that's why pressure and heartbeat reduces -* it manages better. Im in no way doctor do don't take me seriously
9% body fat is sitting on the edge of being dangerous from being to underweight. hope your eating enough food, to little is just as dangerous as to much.

i found that comment when he was saying that

Henry Hill Sounds like Ozzy Osbourne 😂😂😂
Henry Hill I thought he said he would sing the rum song
Henry Hill it was the dead, the band is known for forgetting lyrics. Singing the wrong song was still singing the right song.
This is a similar thing my sister is still going through right now. But her liver is dying for currently an unknown reason compounded with the fact that she was an alcoholic. She ended up needed a full liver transplant and now she can’t ever drink again.
I was feeling mostly horrible when I was drinking half a L of vodka a day at my worst... 3 L hard liquor is just unimaginable. Good that he survived and left a legacy.
Imagine if he drank 3 litres of water everyday since the age of 13.🤔
Best skin around! Lol
Oof

the fact his father introduced substances at such an early age is horrific. admittedly there was a time when i’d see people with substance addictions and just wonder why they didn’t seek help or try to stop because obviously it’s bad for them. then i ended up developing my own dependency on adderall, and it very much changed my stance on addiction. substance abuse is a serious illness that needs medical attention, not judgement or jail time or whatever. I have some dependancy on adderall and that alone feels impossible, I cannot imagine what it’d be like to have a reliance on an arguably more addictive substance be established since 13. people addicted to substances don’t usually take them because they want to, it’s because they feel they have to, it’s a dangerous coping mechanism that has so much poor stigma. I know taking more adderall than prescribed is bad for me, and it worries me, but I also don’t think I could face my current life situation without it, and thats the case for a lot of addiction issues.
I was the same way towards my sister's addiction in my thought processes. thoughts like: why wouldn't she just stop, etc. yet... I had my own issues and was in denial. Now I'm just on a boat load of prescribed meds which is not a whole lot better and still taxes the body. Thankfully not Adderall though, which I strongly believe, wreaked havoc on my sister's body/system. How quickly we are humbled... Rip I miss u Dani 😢
You abused study drugs and got dependent. That’s what happens. People like you take away medicine from us who actually have diagnosed ADHD. I’m dependent on it because I actually have a medical condition that’s treated by it.
My dad introduced me to beer around the same age, and I turned out fine. Maybe wine/liquor isn't the best option...
Beer is a probiotic! 😁
@@therealnambro but what does that actually mean though. an occasional drink is so different than alcoholism. also in general regularly consuming alcohol at a young age does have an impact, it's why you have to be a certain age to legally drink. you might be physically well, but if you had a lot of alcohol growing up you could still have lasting impacts on your brain and body that arent as obvious to you. and even if you did turn out fine, theres so many people who didnt. anecdotal examples are useless in most discussions like this
@@user-xd7dt6gr8l Which part did you want me to explain?
Hi Chubbyemu! I know you will most likely not see this & it'll get lost in these comments somewhere, but I appreciate you for telling JB's story because it reminded me of mine. I was never an alcoholic, but I was in a terrible car accident where they had to do life saving measures on me like they did with JB. My injuries in my accident were a Grade V liver laceration, hepatic artery injury, an injury to right portal vein & avulsion to gallbladder. In my accident, my gallbladder ripped off of my liver from blunt force trauma, and cause my arteries to rip apart as well. I was internally bleeding. My blood pressure dropped to 54/11... and they started massive transfusions. I went into hypovolemic shock as well and was in critical condition. My condition status was deteriorated at one point. They worked on me for hours, got control of the bleeding and did a angiographic embolization (coil embolization) and placed me into a medically induced coma for 2 1/2 weeks. my kidneys started to fail and I had to do dialysis and then my lung collapsed which forced me to be on a ventilator longer than I should've. idk but thank you so much for sharing his story it made me feel inspired to share mine publicly. I resonated with his, and you spoke facts on what the medical field does in emergencies, and because of their quickness, it saved my life!
So this would be Jack Sparrow's liver then?
Hardrockfan21 every pirate I believe lol
Hardrockfan21 why IS the rum gone?
this hits really hard. I'm in tears right now, his mom and dad left him and his little sister all alone in the world. What chance did he really even have?
Glad I'm not the only one to have this reaction. I have a little sister myself and this just breaks my heart.
And this chance was even less when his POS dad introduced him to alcohol in the first place. I’ve heard of and seen so many horrible parents, and I swear I just keep hearing worse and worse.
His mom is criminal for basically abandoning her children.
@@karenduvall1415 that is true, she abandoned her underage children without any support or caregiver.
She is guilty of child cruelty and may be punished with heavy fines and even jail time
I agree that it's sad but he had chance, we people always need excuses for our actions..
Well, either my brother had a bad doc at the veterans hospital, or this procedure wasn't known in 97' ? And it was too late to give him part of mine. They said just take him home. He bled to death in hospital 1 month later . He was 42 . Miss you Chuck , my brother , my friend.

This is a story based on a real man's case who died of liver cirrhosis. At the end of the video, he mentions that the only similarities are the fact that he played in a band, the age of 27 and the cirrhosis. Everything else is fiction, including the acts of the parents.
This would have been prior to the safety nets we have today.
@@ritarevell7195 What safety nets? Kids still suffer horrific abuse today...DCFS investigated a fire where the mother was apparently a crack whore or something. A fire killed 10 kids. Oldest was 16. Age was nowhere to be found.
DCFS had been there 21 TIMES! They're offering MORE help like housecleaning and other such bull, when nobody offers it to people who work for a living honestly. And not use their kid's strollers to steal stuff (child endangerment).
Just think of the mentality: an addict dies and other crack heads GO LOOKING for that dealer TO BUY FROM! On purpose. Holy cow. Great high if you live, or what? :)
I just discovered your videos.. These are really interesting! And omg.. How do people think of these medical procedures!?
